It's a return trip down the Media Path for Vicki and John and this time Bob is along for fun, games and Cowsill family lore! We welcome back Vicki Peterson and John Cowsill, who recently joined us to talk about their collaboration on a new album of songs written by John's late brothers, Billy and Barry Cowsill, 'Long After the Fire', plus fellow founding Cowsills member, Bob Cowsill joins the conversation. We start at the dawn of Vicki's Cowsills journey, as a fan who became a friend who became a spouse. A seven-year-old, Vicki's big sister Debbi said, “You know, there's a girl your age in this band.” Vicki was instantly sold and she spent her allowance savings on the We Can Fly album. In 1977, when Vicki learned that a friend of a friend knew Bob's Cowsill, Vicki gave him a call to talk vocal harmonies. Vicki and Debbi were still bubbling under as The Bangs and they went to see The Cowsills perform at a local club. Just a few years later, Bob found himself invited to The Bangles Platinum party and John recounts his meet-cute with Vicki, right before his marriage to someone else!We test the Cowsill/Peterson crew on self-knowledge with a game we like to call 'Are You Better Informed Than Google?', Vicki and John share what took them two married decades to work together and Bob gives his perspective on John and Vicki's new album of Billy and Barry Cowsill covers.Bob and John share how their generational split affected their musical influences and experiences within the band and we hear about the earliest days of the Cowsills, their father Bud's early clash with brother Richard, performing at Brown frat parties as young kids and their first demo song recordings. And the games continue as everyone takes on some Cowsills Trivia Roulette from Becky Presley's Cowsills site!In recommendations--Fritz: Book, Miss May Does Not Exist by Carrie CourogenWeezy: Hulu Series, Devil in the FamilyPath Points of Interest:The CowsillsBecky Presley's Cowsills PageVicki Peterson and John CowsillVicki and John on InstagramVicki and John on FacebookJohn CowsillJohn Cowsill on FacebookJohn Cowsill on InstagramJohn Cowsill on WikiVicki Peterson on WikiThe BanglesVicki Peterson on FacebookBecky Presley TriviaMiss May Does Not Exist: The Live And Work Of Elaine May, Hollywood's Hidden Genius by Carrie CourogenDevil in the Family
Vicki Peterson and John Cowsill, who are married to each other, have been making music for many years but recently released their first album together, Long After the Fire. Peterson has been singer-songwriter-guitarist for the Bangles and Continental Drifters. John Cowsill began drumming for the Cowsills at a young age, more recently was the Beach Boys' drummer and now fills in as lead singer for the Smithereens. The new album features songs written by John's two late brothers, Bill and Barry Cowsill, and John and Vicki harmonize beautifully and, as you'll hear here, crack each other up. They recount how they decided (and occasionally tangled over) who would sing what and tell great stories too, covering Vicki's long connection with the Cowsills (which dates back to 1978) and John's cosmic if heartbreaking moment with Brian Wilson. Two artists who have left an indelible mark on American music are, in actual fact, a married couple with a brand new album on the verge of dropping. The Bangles' Vicki Peterson and The Cowsills' John Cowsill join us! Differences between these two abound: New England vs. Southern California origins, 60s family pop vs. 80s girl-band rock, drums vs. guitar; but the parallels are even more striking....Both Vicki and John were raised by Top 40 Radio, they began performing very young and played in extraordinarily influential bands with their siblings. And so importantly, they share the honor of touching audiences with music that became lifetime soundtracks. Their new collaborative album, 'Long After the Fire' (including the about-to-drop-on-March 21st-single, 'Is Anybody Here') features covers of songs written by John's late brothers, Billy and Barry Cowsill. It was an uphill battle to acquire the rights to license the music, but thanks to Vicki's tenacity and their producer's rich industry knowledge, Vicki and John have leaned the expanse of their talent and exquisite harmonies into this very personal project.Vicki tells us about her rock stardom ride with the Bangles and John shares his early worries that having entered professional show biz at the age of seven, his career chose him and therefore the subsequent attention often felt embarrassing. We also talk about, 'Family Band: The Cowsills Story', a documentary that Weezy made about the Cowsills. We discuss John's time with the Beach Boys, Vicki's collaborations with her sister-in-law, Susan Cowsill and Vicki and John give each other the business with the well-earned nicknames, ‘Child Star' and ‘Rock Star'. Plus, we have a round of IMDB Roulette for the ages and an exclusive, in-studio performance!Path Points of InterestVicki Peterson and John CowsillVicki Peterson and John Cowsill on YoutubeA Thousand Times Video Vicki and John on InstagramVicki and John on FacebookJohn CowsillJohn Cowsill on FacebookJohn Cowsill on InstagramJohn Cowsill on WikiJoey's SongVicki Peterson on WikiThe BanglesVicki Peterson on FacebookNorman's Rare Guitars DocumentaryViet Nam: The Way That Changed America - Apple TV

The band was formed in early 1965 by brothers Bill, Bob, and Barry Cowsill; their brother John joined shortly thereafter. Originally Bill and Bob played guitar and Barry played the drums. When John learned to play drums and joined the band, Barry began playing bass. After their initial success, the brothers were joined by their siblings Susan and Paul along with their mother, Barbara. A seventh sibling, Bob's fraternal twin brother Richard, was never part of the band during its heyday, although he occasionally appeared with them in later years. The band's road manager for most of their career was Richard "Biggie" Korn. When the group expanded to its full family membership by 1967, the six siblings ranged in age from 8 to 19. Joined by their mother, Barbara Cowsill (née Russell), the group inspired the 1970s television show The Partridge Family. #thecowsills
Susan Cowsill of the Cowsills reflects on her memories of Hurricane Katrina, which took the life of her brother, Barry. She doesn't have closure from his death, despite his body being found, but is able to have an upbeat outlook from the experience that we could all learn from.
As broadcast August 30, 2021 with plenty of extra rain buckets to add to the podcast experience. On this night when Hurricane Ida is roiling The Crescent City of New Orleans, we remember Katrina making landfall almost 16 years to the day. Fats Domino barely escaped with his life from his home in the 9th Ward, but unfortunately Barry Cowsill was subsumed by the rushing floods, passing away aged 50. Praying for everyone in New Orleans tonight. After that, we welcomed Stella to the studio for the final time, as Yejin is set to return to her regular duties next week, and for most of the full two hours it's all about that new stuff with great new albums out from Big Red Machine, Madi Diaz, and Evan Wright to check a bit of, along with the fantastic First Nights EP from our main men down in Wellington, Arjuna Oakes & Serebii, who joined us last Friday. #feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Fats Domino – Walkin' To New OrleansFats Domino – Ain't That A ShameGeese – Low Era (edit)HONNE feat NIKI – Coming HomeLalah Hathaway & Robert Glasper – Show Me Your SoulCHVRCHES – NightmaresCHVRCHES feat Robert Smith – How Not To Drown Part II (33:37)Madi Diaz – History of a FeelingBig Red Machine feat Taylor Swift – BirchEvan Wright – PeopleTeenage Priest – AnymoreArjuna Oakes & Serebii – ResetGorillaz feat AJ Tracey – Jimmy JimmyBurna Boy feat Don Jazzy – Question Part III (62:41)Skrillex – Don't Go (with Justin Bieber & Don Toliver)Selena Gomez ft Camilo - 999Halsey – I am not a woman, I'm a godBelly ft The Weeknd – Die For It (ft. The only answer is “Yes.” Dan Navarro’s creedo which has served him well, and, saved my ass more than once. With 24 hrs notice Dan stepped in, swung away and gave it 110%, as he always does. Opening the show with the beauty, Let it Ride, from his newly dropped solo CD, Shed My Skin, he told stories… Barry Cowsill *swoon*, Hanson, Cameron Dye, Deborah Pearl, Severin Browne, his cousin Dave, The Bangles, and, of course, his longtime collaborator, creative and performing partner, Eric Lowen who passed of complications of ALS in 2012, forever changing Dan’s life, in innumerable ways. He did a little Javier Bardem, talked Family Guy, and closed out the BROADcast with a mini-concert, two killer cuts from his new CD, not to be missed, and, his mega-hit for Pat Benatar, We Belong, currently featured in the box office smash, Deadpool 2. Nothing like Dan the creator performing his song. We laughed like hell, had a ball, but alas, no tightie whities, or whacky blackies. Next time.
