I kind of felt like I already knew Madi Diaz, even though we'd never met before, when we connected over Zoom this summer for the conversation in episode 112 of the LSQ podcast. That's in part because we have many music friends in common, and I've heard a lot of great things about her over the years. But it's even more the case because her songs are so beautifully direct and intimate; they give you a really vivid sense of her inner world, with all of its relatable nuances.   You can hear that gift on full display on albums like her 2021 LP History of a Feeling, and even more powerfully on her latest one, Weird Faith, which came out earlier this year, and of which a deluxe edition arrives later this month. In this conversation, we talk about creative experiences that have impacted her since childhood, whether it's doing laps around her house while listening to her dad play piano, or singing along with Whitney Houston and the Beatles and The Mamas & the Papas as a kid in rural Pennsylvania, or connecting with Patti Griffin's music during a difficult time in her family life, or learning to burst out of the constraints imposed by a judgmental guitar teacher during adolescence, in particular finding her voice and artistic footing during her recent years living in Nashville.  Madi heads out on tour with Rainbow Kitten Surprise in early November - get tickets here.

A record deal with Anti- Records and her critically hailed fifth full length effort, History Of A Feeling, got a much bigger wheel in motion than ever before, including finding a fan in one Harry Styles, who invited Madi to join him on tour to open some of his shows, and join his band. Now after standing on some of the biggest stages in the world with one of its biggest pop stars, Madi Diaz has returned with her sixth full length album, with a title that perfectly sums up finding the courage to fall in love again, and sticking it out in the music industry. It's called Weird Faith, and just before she released the album, Madi stopped by SHEROES to chat with host Carmel Holt about the new album, her journey, and perspectives she's gained along the way.

Record of the Week artist Madi Diaz has a lot going on. Since her reign as WNXP's Nashville Artist of the Month a couple of years ago, she's been co-signed by Muna and Waxahatchee. Her friend Kacey Musgraves jumped on a duet. She was picked by Pitchfork as a top album and Rolling Stone recently proclaimed this “the year of Madi.” Oh and Harry Styles handpicked her to not only open some shows but to join his band for a massive world tour! In our interview Madi explains how that experience “blew the lid off” her thought process around songwriting and recording. She shares a unique, recurring performance dream and a real-life nightmare (with a happy ending) that brought that feeling to life while opening for Styles. And she walks us through several tracks on Weird Faith, expanding on the big picture themes she tackles in songs like “Kiss the Wall,” “God Person” and “Obsessive Thoughts.”

Host Paul Cardall has been a fan of singer songwriter Aaron Espe for more than two decades. The musicians discuss Aaron's unique gift of writing songs that reconnect adults to their childhood. They discuss Aaron's latest album, Up North, which explores his childhood in a small Michigan town where he would eat "Liver and Onions" just to be with his grandfather as well as get a haircut to see his uncle and barber Duane. They talk about his grandmother in a rest home called Sheltering Oaks, which he wrote a song about. Paul asks about being a father today and what Aaron is doing to help re-create a time of innocence for his four sons. They talk about getting the kids off the iPads to explore outside.  The two discuss marriage and having wives who support an artist career and mentality. They also briefly talk about Deer Hunting as children, which Aaron wrote a song about. ABOUT AARON ESPEFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/aaronespepageInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/aaronespeYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpd-_G3rgyx40Vbg_X9v7XgSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/11nbBcaBk8uXBPQsc3Sq9p?si=HDWhdyOgQhaJ4oSJZkclvAApple Music: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/aaron-espe/98279561 Raised in small-town northern Minnesota, singer-songwriter Aaron Espe writes tunes “…as delicate as his soft spoken voice,” says American Songwriter, “about the simple joys and occasional frustrations of life…[sometimes cloaking] his easy going lyrics in complex conceptual ideas.”Espe got his start in 2005 opening for the folk duo Storyhill in Minneapolis before dropping out of college to tour on his own. Lauren Minear is a Nashville-raised singer-songwriter set to release her debut album, Invisible Woman, out October 14. She is steeped in the vulnerability of Nashville soul, the real deal; tender and passionate, yet raw and brutally honest songwriting in the lineage of Joni Mitchell, Lucinda Williams, and Gillian Welch. Like these women, Lauren wears her heart on her sleeve as she explores the corners of love through a fragile lens of self-awareness, evoking the likes of Anais Mitchell, Taylor Swift, and Natalie Merchant.Born in Manhattan, Lauren's family moved to Nashville, where she grew up, spending her formative years sharing her parents' love of Brooks & Dunn, KD Lang, Garth Brooks, and Patsy Cline. She also immersed herself in the sounds from the country music radio stations they tuned into on their regular drives from the city to New Orleans to visit her grandparents and the southern soul there, radiating out of The Big Easy.Memorizing songs by Faith Hill, Amy Grant, Mariah Carey, and Shania Twain, and with Nashville songwriting seemingly steeped in her blood, Lauren Minear wrote her first song, "Daddy's Little Girl," at 14 years old, and soon found herself interning on Music Row at Major Bob Music, at Sony ATV Publishing and in the studio with Steve Earle as well as performing and recording an EP with guitarist George Marinelli (Bonnie Raitt). Now a Mother of two little boys and again living in New York with Madi Diaz, Brandi Carlile, Allison Russell, and YEBBA on her stereo, Lauren's journey has been far from just musical; her life has given her a rich and varied tapestry of experiences from which to draw as a songwriter. A transformative journey that has given her confidence and power, Lauren's artistry and songwriting skills were rekindled when she became a mother. This process changed her perception of the world and herself and brought her back to music and the spiritual therapy of creativity.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Lissie over Zoom video.Midwestern artist Lissie is a multi-talented tour de force who appeared in TV shows Twin Peaks and Loudermilk as well as co-owning the music genre themed popcorn company Otts Pops Indie Pop and being involved with land conservation and running her own farm. Her new country-tinged indie folk album Carving Canyons is due out September 16 on Lionboy Records. The sun soaked twelve song collection is a sonic comfort as it simultaneously charts the ripples caused by heartbreak and loneliness as well as what happens when the soul perseveres amidst pain. As the COVID-19 pandemic spread across the world, Lissie was also dealing with an impactful breakup on her Iowa farm. A breakup song at its core, lead single “Flowers” explores the cycles of grief and the parallels Lissie saw in nature while gardening on her farm as she processed that grief. Co-written with Henry Brill and Bre Kennedy who also contributes vocals, you can just about feel the sunny breeze roll in as she builds power from pain with the expansive track. Produced by Curt Schneider (Patty Smyth, Lucero), Carving Canyons is about looking within while dealing with the uncertainty of the future—finding hope in personal and worldly adversity, no matter what the forecast might say. Inspired by her incredible intergenerational female friend group and the nature that surrounded her, Lissie traveled to Nashville and co-wrote much of the album with a majority of female-identifying songwriters—including Bre Kennedy, Madi Diaz, Morgan Nagler, Natalie Hemby, Kate York, and Sarah Buxton—who also contribute additional vocals throughout the album. In this episode, we get to meet Madi Diaz. Madi is a singer-songwriter based in Nashville, who has just released her deeply personal and honest new solo record, History of a Feeling. Out on Anti-, the record details, with autopsy-like precision, the aftermath of a relationship gone awry. In this chat, Madi and I discuss at length this new album, and the comfort level it took for her to release such personal work. We also somehow get on the topic of Disney Movies and Brave Little Toaster, so there's also that. Thanks for listening, and I hope you enjoy this humorous and slightly circuitous conversation.

The Show On The Road with Z. Lupetin

This week, we go on a deep dive with Madi Diaz, a sought-after Nashville-based songwriter who may have dropped among the most devastating and powerful break-up albums of the decade with her newest LP History Of A Feeling, a searing debut on Anti- Records. If you've made it to the doldrums of your mid-thirties, you've probably had your heart broken once or thrice. Diaz is no exception, except unlike the rest of us who may try and forget all about those lost love affairs, Diaz does the opposite. She chronicles the destruction of her last relationship with a craftsman's precision, creating a series of unvarnished, seething, diaristic songs about an ongoing and fractured grieving process. Diaz opens with the gut-puncher “Rage,” which says a lot even if it's under two minutes long. Is it ok to not be ready to move on? To hate that you HAVE to move on? Soon after she's “Crying In Public” and immediately after that she's baring her teeth in the standout acoustic single “Resentment” - which was initially covered by moody pop hero Kesha. Does it get brighter from there? Not exactly, but it's better that way. It could be way off base, but maybe History Of A Feeling is our updated Jagged Little Pill without the pop artifice. Not that Diaz sings at all like Alanis, but a similar hope for heartbroken catharsis weaves its way throughout. Working with Big Thief collaborator and soulful producer Andrew Sarlo surely helped capture the intimate vibe, with certain songs barely needing more than a guitar and her direct, cutting voice. Without an army of synths or the armor of an orchestra behind her, or the security blanket of a band smoothing out the edges, the rawness of the emotion in each song sings out louder. Diaz, who grew up in Lancaster, PA with a dad who had his own Frank Zappa cover band (she mentioned that she indeed had her own teen version) and then later dropped out of Berklee College of Music to hit the road with her own work, has never been afraid to pick at the shrapnel in some of her deepest wounds to create songs that leave their own mark after you listen. She's put out more atmospheric pop-forward work - like We Threw Our Hearts In The Fire (2012) and Phantom (2017) - for a decade, but this quieter, more personal record feels like she's finally found her sound. Pulling no punches, Diaz bravely includes songs like “Man In Me” which hints that she lost a long-time partner who also then transitioned. In a way, it was almost a double-loss that left her feeling confused and guilty for feeling angry at all. And yet - when we reach the end of History Of A Feeling, the feeling we get isn't bitterness or rage any longer - it may be that most elusive of the grieving steps: acceptance. And maybe even forgiveness.

As broadcast August 30, 2021 with plenty of extra rain buckets to add to the podcast experience.  On this night when Hurricane Ida is roiling The Crescent City of New Orleans, we remember Katrina making landfall almost 16 years to the day.  Fats Domino barely escaped with his life from his home in the 9th Ward, but unfortunately Barry Cowsill was subsumed by the rushing floods, passing away aged 50.  Praying for everyone in New Orleans tonight.  After that, we welcomed Stella to the studio for the final time, as Yejin is set to return to her regular duties next week, and for most of the full two hours it's all about that new stuff with great new albums out from Big Red Machine, Madi Diaz, and Evan Wright to check a bit of, along with the fantastic First Nights EP from our main men down in Wellington, Arjuna Oakes & Serebii, who joined us last Friday.  #feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Fats Domino – Walkin' To New OrleansFats Domino – Ain't That A ShameGeese – Low Era (edit)HONNE feat NIKI – Coming HomeLalah Hathaway & Robert Glasper – Show Me Your SoulCHVRCHES – NightmaresCHVRCHES feat Robert Smith – How Not To Drown  Part II (33:37)Madi Diaz – History of a FeelingBig Red Machine feat Taylor Swift – BirchEvan Wright – PeopleTeenage Priest – AnymoreArjuna Oakes & Serebii – ResetGorillaz feat AJ Tracey – Jimmy JimmyBurna Boy feat Don Jazzy – Question Part III (62:41)Skrillex – Don't Go (with Justin Bieber & Don Toliver)Selena Gomez ft Camilo - 999Halsey – I am not a woman, I'm a godBelly ft The Weeknd – Die For It (ft.
