FATHER Brian D'Arcy is chaplain to the world of Irish showbusiness and has been a friend and confidante to our entertainers since the 1960s. A columnist with the Sunday World for 46 years, Fr Brian has led a remarkable life and here we focus on his interactions with Irish and international music stars from the showbands to the world of country music. Here, in part two of Fr Brian's story, he recalls his personal encounters with American country superstars such as Johnny Cash, Charley Pride and Kris Kristofferson, and shares his fond memories of Irish entertainers including Joe Dolan and Brendan Bowyer. Fr Brian recalls how he had to break the shocking news to Kris Kristofferson, minutes before he was due to perform on a Dublin stage, that his daughter was in a critical condition after an accident back home in America. Fr Brian also tells how Johnny Cash would have him pray with the family before his shows. And one of the most traumatic periods in Fr Brian's life, he says, was in July 1975 when he had to officiate at the funerals of five Irish entertainers in one week, including those murdered in the Miami Showband massacre.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Miami Showband Massacre is one of the most infamous atrocities of The Troubles. In the early hours of the morning The MiamI Showband - then one of Ireland's most famous groups - were stopped at what appeared to be a military checkpoint in County Down. It was in fact an ambush, planned as an attempt to frame the band as terrorists. Three of the band members were killed in the attack. Stephen Travers was one of the survivors of the attack and was left fighting for his life in the aftermath. Since then he has campaigned for the truth behind the attack, and also to help other victims of The Troubles unravel the dark cloud of secrets that hangs to this day. Despite the subject, ultimately this is a conversation full of hope and happiness. Stephen is an inspiring man and it was a pleasure to have him tell us his story.

By the mid 1970s, "The Troubles" in Ireland was at it's bloodiest point. The people of Ireland and Northern Ireland could not see eye to eye, some even taking a more violent approach. In the early morning hours of July 31, 1975, the Miami Showband was on their way back to Dublin after a show in Northern Ireland. The band's minibus was stopped at a checkpoint by a group of soldiers. Many of the soldiers seem to be members of the British Army, so the band was relaxed. The members were forced to get out and face a field with their hands on their heads. Two soldiers began looking through the car, eventually placing a time bomb under the driver's seat. Due to poor handling and soldering, the bomb went off prematurely, killing both men. All hell broke loose and the soldiers began firing at the band. Of the five members, three were executed and one was severely injured. In total, five people were killed. The checkpoint was found to be fake and the soldiers were members of the Northern Ireland paramilitary group, UVF. Their goal was to send the band to the next town and detonate the bomb at a police station and claim the band was part of the IRA. Only three members were tried and convicted. They were sentenced to life imprisonment but were all released in 1998. Although names have been tossed around, seven of the ten UVF soldiers involved have been identified.

Our answer? It's the consistent decision to understand yourself and others so that we can all have fuller and richer human experiences. It's a simple statement with a lot of complicated implications. We love complications, to be honest, because the more complicated something is, it's usually more real. In that light, we've designed a 2-day virtual masterclass to dig into some of what it looks like to do the work of empathy. We'll have discussions about inclusivity, how everyone has trauma and none of it is comparable, how to set boundaries, and why the Puritans were and are the worst, and more. It's us and some special guests for this interactive experience. The next round is February 24 and 25, 2022 and you don't want to miss it. Head to bit.ly/ARmasterclass to sign up. See you there!

Stephen Travers is an inspiring figure who was one of two survivors of the Miami Showband Massacre. The story of the bombing of his band was recently featured in the Netflix series “ReMastered”. Today Stephen is a passionate voice for reconciliation and also for the truth about historic injustices to be made known. The Miami Showband were one of the biggest of Ireland’s showbands in the mid 70’s. They regularly attracted crowds into the thousands. On 31st July 1975 the infamous Glenanne Gang gunned down three of the band’s members after a bomb the gang was attempting to plant on the band’s bus exploded prematurely. Stephen founded the Truth and Reconciliation Platform (TARP) with Eugene Reavey who is featured in our Guardians Of The Flame documentary.

In July 1975, the Miami Showband were heading back home after a gig in Northern Ireland. As they headed south towards the border, they were pulled over at a temporary checkpoint. What happened next is almost beyond our comprehension.... IN this special bonus episode, Podaganda's Steve Sweeney speaks with Stephen Travers: musician, campaigner and survivor of the Miami Showband massacre. In July 1975, one of the most notorious events of The Troubles took place in County Down in the north of Ireland. Three members of one of the most popular bands at the time, the Miami Showband, were shot dead by Loyalist paramilitaries at what appeared to be a British Army checkpoint. Sweeney spoke to bass player and survivor Stephen Travers, who has pursued a 40-year quest for justice amid a cover-up and the alleged involvement of the British state. Show notes For anyone wondering why the Morning Star uses the term ‘north of Ireland’ rather than ‘Northern Ireland’ or why it covers it on the international pages, check out the explanation here youtu.be/AI1ghi5t62g?t=1551 on the pilot version of Podganda. "So they thought, 'Let's frame the most trusted, most innocent commuters - people who travel up and down all the time - and they thought of us. We would have gone down in history as terrorists carrying bombs for the IRA..." When Governments admit, to not only killing their own civilians, but hiding the information, even when its brought forward years later, you have to ask yourself, Who’s interests were they really representing? Stuart Baillie's book, "Trouble Songs" is, as he told us at this Word In Your Ear, his personal story as well as the story of music and the Troubles. Born in Belfast in 1961, Stuart came to London to work on the NME, returning to Belfast in the late 90s to run a music project in the city. His book paints a rich picture of a place with unique virtues as well as unique problems. It's the story of how entertainment has reflected both and how live music re-emerged from behind the ring of steel and came blinking in the daylight following the Good Friday agreement. It's the story of Christy Moore, the Miami Showband, Stiff Little Fingers, Rudi, Van Morrison, the Undertones, Terri Hooley and scores of others, many of whom were interviewed specifically for the book. It's also the story of the part played in the events of the time by outsiders like Lennon and McCartney, U2 and The Clash. It's the story of how music both brings people together and sometimes drives them apart. It's one of the best books we've ever covered in Word In Your Ear.
