This week we are talking about a rare event in British history, a spree shooting. Though it could easily have been two.Barry Williams was a man who struggled to see other people as anything other than objects, and who had a fascination with guns, which is not the best combination. So when he began to get annoyed with his neighbours in the middle 70s, it was only a matter of time before he decided he needed to take steps to get rid of them. But at least he would not be released from custody and left to stockpile a second arsenal of weapons... On Episode 150 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis kicks off a celebration of the 45th Anniversary of the premiere of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE! This film is a 1979 American science fiction drama directed by Robert Wise. It is based on and stars the cast of the 1966–1969 television series Star Trek created by Gene Roddenberry, who serves as producer. In the film, set in the 2270s, a mysterious and powerful alien cloud known as V'Ger approaches Earth, destroying everything in its path. Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) assumes command of the recently refitted Starship Enterprise to lead it on a mission to determine V'Ger's origins and save the planet. Assisting Curtis in this endeavor in an exclusive interview is DAVID GAUTREAUX, the actor perhaps best known for work he never did – the role of Vulcan science officer Xon in the proposed Star Trek: Phase II television series. When the series was aborted, he was given the role of Commander Branch in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. David has also guest-starred in numerous television series including Man From Atlantis, Search for Tomorrow, One Life to Live, T. J. Hooker, L.A. Law, ER, Rules of Engagement, Boston Legal, and The Beast. He played recurring roles on Franklin & Bash, Damages, and the latest incarnation of S.W.A.T. In this interview, David discusses with Curtis about his career in and out of Star Trek, complete with several nuggets of minutia and obscurity which you'll only hear right here on RetroZest! Episode 184 of The Business Development Podcast features Barry Williams, an assistant professor at MacEwan University and seasoned property management expert. In this episode, Kelly Kennedy and Barry discuss how real estate serves as an economic indicator, particularly through housing starts, which can predict economic trends up to a year in advance. Barry explains the nuances of property management and offers insights for entrepreneurs considering commercial real estate investments, emphasizing the importance of understanding the financial and operational responsibilities of property ownership. He also delves into the changes in the real estate landscape post-COVID, particularly the shift towards remote work, which has left much office space underutilized.Throughout their conversation, Barry provides practical advice on topics such as market surveys, negotiating lease terms, and assessing the viability of purchasing versus leasing office spaces. He highlights the complexities involved in managing a building, from energy efficiency to handling potentially costly issues like asbestos. For business owners, Barry's insights offer valuable guidance on navigating the challenges of property investment and management in today's dynamic economic environment.Key Takeaways:1. Real estate trends, especially housing starts, can be valuable economic indicators that forecast shifts up to a year in advance.2. Property management involves more than ownership; managing a building includes maintenance, financial management, and HR skills.3. Entrepreneurs should assess both short-term and long-term needs when deciding between leasing and purchasing real estate.4. A market survey is essential when leasing or buying; understanding local rental rates and amenities helps ensure a fair deal.5. Office space demand has shifted post-COVID, with many companies now favoring remote or hybrid work models, impacting vacancy rates.6. Energy efficiency in buildings can significantly affect operational costs, making modern, eco-friendly properties a wise investment.7. Common area costs in commercial buildings can be a substantial expense; be sure to account for them when budgeting.8. Converting office buildings into residential spaces is costly and requires a clear financial recovery plan.9. Specialized maintenance issues, such as asbestos or mold abatement, can dramatically increase building management costs.10. The decision to buy or lease commercial property depends on financing costs, long-term plans, and the potential return on investment.Companies mentioned in this episode: MacEwan University Epic Investment Services BGIS Aiyer and Oxford Inc. It's called, of course, the Mailboat Suspense series. In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed finding positive places online (November 23, 2020), gratitude for those who co-parent with us (November 25, 2019), and what we're thankful for (November 22, 2018). Mentioned: Heidi Wrangles Cats, an Icebreaker-inspired TikTok, and its predecessor, the movie Cutting Edge.Next week, our TV watch will cover Taylor Swift Night on Dancing with the Stars and "Close Enough to Touch" (S2 E5) on The Gilded Age. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Phillips continued scoring films and television series including music for the films Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970), The Seven Minutes (1971) and the television series Get Christie Love!. In 1974, he began working at Universal Studios scoring television series; Glen A. Larson made extensive use of his compositions. During this time, he scored music for the television series Switch, McCloud, The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, Quincy M.E. and (of course) Battlestar Galactica. He also composed music for the television series The Amazing Spider-Man. After moving to 20th Century Fox Television, Stu composed music for The Fall Guy and Knight Rider. Pat was the second-biggest-charting artist of the late 1950s, behind only Elvis Presley, and was ranked at No. 9 in Billboard's listing of the Top 100 Top 40 Artists 1955–1995. Until the 2010s, he held the Billboard record for spending 220 consecutive weeks on the charts with one or more songs each week. He also holds the record for the most songs recorded by any recording artist. The Dunedin mayor has moved quickly to replace his outgoing deputy who's resigned over the handling of a racist incident. Sophie Barker handed her notice in after filing an official complaint about Mayor Jules Radich's conduct and how he managed accusations of racist abuse by the Strath Taieri community board chair, Barry Williams. The council wrote to Mr Williams asking him to consider stepping down after he directed a racial slur at a pub worker. He hasn't. Yesterday councillor Cherry Lucas was appointed as the new Deputy mayor. Joining us now to shed more light on the situation is former deputy Sophie Barker, who still remains a councillor. Once and forever a Brady! Christopher Knight met life as a child actor, starring as "Peter Brady" in the TV classic hit show The Brady Bunch. A reluctant icon, Christopher has focused his adult years on interests beyond the entertainment industry, particularly the corporate world of computers and high technology. My guest, Christoper Knight, and I discuss: Christopher Knight talks about his appearance on The Masked Singer with fellow Brady boys Barry Williams and Mike Lookinland. Christopher reflects on the pressure put on the Brady kids to become singers and his struggle with that based on his lack of singing talent. Christopher opens up about his home life during his Brady run and the pressure his Mom put on him to be a singer and her disappointment in The Brady Bunch, which she didn't deem real art. Christopher's dad had a guest role on the Brady Bunch. Auditioning as a kid for so many TV shows before landing his iconic role as Peter Brady. He occasionally bumped into a very young Jodie Foster during auditions. Learning to impersonate Humphry Bogart with the help of Lloyd Schwartz - "pork chops and applesauce." Christopher's pivotal role in Sharknado 6: It's About Time as Nova's Grandpa Clarke. We discuss Cousin Oliver, Robbie Rist, and the changing dynamic of The Brady Bunch at the time Robbie joined the show. Robert Reed's tension on the set but his love for his Brady family. The HGTV's A Very Brady Renovation and the secret behind the lack of toilets in The Brady Bunch. Christopher Knight's post-Brady success in the furniture business with Christopher Knight Home. "Fake Jan" and the Brady Bunch Variety Hour and the reason Eve Plumb skipped this opportunity to be a Brady. Christopher's podcast with Barry Williams, The Brady Bros. and so much more!
