Second time's a charm for this week's @weheardwonders. We give our thoughts on Big Thief's sprawling new LP, Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You: is their biggest statement also their grandest, or is it a case of too much of a good thing? We also have our say on dynamic Dublin five-piece MELTS, library-jazz-funk mystery man Claude Cooper, Zimbabwe's word-of-mouth sensations Gonora Sounds, and the bedroom psych-pop of practical man-out-of-time Evan Wright. On this episode of Roger the Wild Child Show, we are joined by former ECW wrestler, adultr film star and podcast host, Jasmin St. Claire! Jasmin St. Claire shot to fame as "America's Most Controversial Sex Symbol" after appearing in the top-selling adult films of the late 1990s. She created an outlaw rock star image that at times scandalized the adult industry. Her acerbic humor and willingness to mock her own porn stardom made her one of the highest rated guests on Howard Stern's radio show and related broadcasts for E! Entertainment. St. Claire's first mainstream appearances were in significant comic roles in Communication Breakdown and in National Lampoon Dorm Daze 2. St. Claire's background is almost entirely at odds with her early adult-film career. She was born Rhea De Vlugt in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Her father, from Holland, operated a food distribution company. Her mother was a U.S.-educated lawyer, originally from Brazil. St. Claire grew up on Manhattan's Upper west side and attended the Lycee Francais and McBurney School, whose alumni include Henry Winkler and J.D. Salinger. St. Claire graduated from Brooklyn Friends School at age 16, with honors for her work in the pioneering "Art without Walls" tutoring program for inner city youth. Upon graduation from Columbia University, St, Claire became a financial consultant at S. G. Warburg (then, a division of Swiss Bank.). But while in a physically abusive relationship with a prominent Manhattan lawyer (whom St. Claire later outed in an interview with Howard Stern), she began a secret life as a topless dancer at Manhattan's infamous KitKat Club, then at Flashdancers.St. Claire entered the adult industry on a dare. Invited on the Jerry Springer Show for a scripted role as antagonistic stripper, St. Claire invented her larger-than-life "Jasmin St. Claire" persona. St. Claire's flare for theater and controversy marked her ascent in the adult film world. She polarized the industry by calling porn films "by and large, disgusting and brainless." But she quickly dethroned Jenna Jameson as America's top-selling porn star, and became the first Latina to surpass traditional blond porn star archetypes when her films achieved number one sales position in 1998. She was inducted in AVN's "Hall of Fame" as one of the greatest porn stars of all time. St. Claire was among the first adult performers to be merchandised as an action figure and to star in an adult comic book series. At the height of her porn stardom, St. Claire was the subject of critical essays by David Foster Wallace and Evan Wright. For all the controversy she engendered, St. Claire only spent three years in the adult business and made just over two dozen films. In 1999, she retired. She never made an adult film again, though compilations of old footage re-released under new titles continued to be sold through the 2000s. St. Claire pushed herself to new extremes by becoming a pro-wrestler. In 1998 the Dudley Boyz invited her to appear in the ECW's Living Dangerously pay-per-view event. St. Claire subsequently trained under Sue Sexton and Mando Guerrero, then worked with wrestling legend Jimmy Lawler in the Memphis Championship and in the XWF and NWA-TNA. St. Claire often played the role of "manager," who would enter the ring and fight alongside wrestlers. In real life, St. Claire created the upstart federation 3PW becoming the first female owner ever to operate and promote a wrestling league, five years before Stephanie McMahon took the reigns of the WWE. St. Claire closed the doors to 3PW in 2005. St. Claire became a heavy-metal journalist and on-air personality with the launch of the Metals Darkside series in 2004, which she also produced. Her interest in heavy metal stretches back to the first Black Sabbath show she attended at Madison Square Garden when she was nine.

As cross border commerce continues its skyrocketing growth, governments around the globe are focusing intently on getting their share of the pie in the form of taxes and tariffs—even for low-value transactions. That's why brands must make tax compliance a key part of their cross-border strategy, says Evan Wright, director of growth, cross border at […]
There's a gold rush underway and you can see it in container ships stacked up at major world ports - it's cross border ecommerce. Avalara's Evan Wright told Digital River's Jason Nyhus that while there's plenty of opportunity, there is also plenty of risk if brands don't understand the complexities of cross border selling. As broadcast August 30, 2021 with plenty of extra rain buckets to add to the podcast experience. On this night when Hurricane Ida is roiling The Crescent City of New Orleans, we remember Katrina making landfall almost 16 years to the day. Fats Domino barely escaped with his life from his home in the 9th Ward, but unfortunately Barry Cowsill was subsumed by the rushing floods, passing away aged 50. Praying for everyone in New Orleans tonight. After that, we welcomed Stella to the studio for the final time, as Yejin is set to return to her regular duties next week, and for most of the full two hours it's all about that new stuff with great new albums out from Big Red Machine, Madi Diaz, and Evan Wright to check a bit of, along with the fantastic First Nights EP from our main men down in Wellington, Arjuna Oakes & Serebii, who joined us last Friday. #feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Fats Domino – Walkin' To New OrleansFats Domino – Ain't That A ShameGeese – Low Era (edit)HONNE feat NIKI – Coming HomeLalah Hathaway & Robert Glasper – Show Me Your SoulCHVRCHES – NightmaresCHVRCHES feat Robert Smith – How Not To Drown Part II (33:37)Madi Diaz – History of a FeelingBig Red Machine feat Taylor Swift – BirchEvan Wright – PeopleTeenage Priest – AnymoreArjuna Oakes & Serebii – ResetGorillaz feat AJ Tracey – Jimmy JimmyBurna Boy feat Don Jazzy – Question Part III (62:41)Skrillex – Don't Go (with Justin Bieber & Don Toliver)Selena Gomez ft Camilo - 999Halsey – I am not a woman, I'm a godBelly ft The Weeknd – Die For It (ft. In 2004, journalist Evan Wright released a book called Generation Kill, all about his time attached to a Marine regiment during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. It was a hit, and the basis for a 2008 HBO series by the same name. As its name suggests, the US Marines 1st Recon Battalion is meant to... well... perform reconnaissance. But 'Chaos' and 'Godfather' saw them more suited for a blitzkrieg to Baghdad. The result is an extraordinary story of courage, insanity, and ruthlessness, and we're eager to talk about all seven episodes and all eight hours. Of course, while we go over our favorite characters, moments, and more, this conversation also delves into the Iraq War itself, what it was like living in a society that overwhelmingly supported the conflict, and the lessons we've hopefully learned for the future. So hit play and listen... but police that mustache first. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

David Simon and Ed Burns produced what is heralded as one of the most authentic depictions of the Iraq War, based on Evan Wright's embedded reporting. We look at how it navigates between journalism and drama to keep us from forgetting the story of soldiers on the ground. Interested in the media we discussed this episode? This Week in Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence (AI) Podcast
This week my guest is Evan Wright, principal data scientist at cybersecurity startup Anomali. In my interview with Evan, he and I discussed about a number of topics surrounding the use of machine learning in cybersecurity. If Evan’s name sounds familiar, it’s because Evan was the winner of the O’Reilly Strata+Hadoop World ticket giveaway earlier this month. We met up at the conference last week and took advantage of the opportunity to record this show. Our conversation covers, among other topics, the three big problems in cybersecurity that ML can help out with, the challenges of acquiring ground truth in cybersecurity and some ways to accomplish it, and the use of decision trees, generative adversarial networks, and other algorithms in the field. The show notes can be found at twimlai.com/talk/16.
Welcome to Episode 66 of the Floppy Days Podcast, where we try to relive our youth by talking about computers nearly as old as we are. Vintage Computer Festival Midwest #11 recently happened on Sep. 10 and 11, 2016 in Elk Grove Village, IL and I managed to find my way there again this year. Once again, I had an incredible time at the event and thought I’d share some of it with you. I managed to get a few interviews, meet several people I had never met before, catch up with old friends, and come home with far more items than I left with. So, I plan to give you a quick run-down of the event through my eyes and I hope you find this interesting. Episode #28: Having been passed the torch from his predecessors to make Haas more Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive, Evan Wright FTMBA ’20, shares with us the importance of these initiatives at Haas and beyond. Evan starts his humble roots, born and raised, in Southeast Washington D.C. He was educated in the DC public school system until 9th grade when he received a full scholarship to attend the well-known Sidwell Friends School, a school attended by the likes of children of the President of the United States (Obama, Clinton, Roosevelt). He shares with us what it was like to go from a public school with predominantly underrepresented minorities (URM) to one of the most prestigious schools in the nation but predominantly white, and the shocks he experienced those formative years of his life. After high school, he went on to study Biomedical Engineering at Brown University. After Brown, we hear about his experiences from Asia to DC to Chicago to Japan and more. Evan then joins us at Haas and serves as the VP of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) on behalf of which he gave a presentation, at the dinner where we met, on Allyship and what it means to be an Ally. Check out the example we mentioned on the show of Allyship in action at the Sacramento City Council Meeting here.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/onehaas/donations
