Dan Navarro Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson They say you can never go home- they didn't have their old pal Dan Navarro on their show––took me right back to shared memories with Chloris Leachman in the living room, the Mets winning a 2015 playoff game at Dodger Stadium (unlike today), seeing Lori Lieberman at The Grammy Museum, Mike Finnegan at The Levitt Pavilion, NAMM hangs, my book launch, a 12 Step meeting, good food, a few of these here shows before and during the pandemic… It's always warm and comfy as if no time has passed. We touched on Dan's early days, his creative parents, his famous cousin, Dave, a horrific family tragedy, starting out on horns, finding his voice, literally, writing songs, being a singing waiter at The Great American Food & Beverage Company, with a host of others who found success, including Eric Lowen, who would become his partner, and begin their relationship co-writing the iconic, We Belong, and selling it to Pat Benetar, before it came to have a life of its own, putting out 12 albums, touring for decades, also writing for the Bangles and others, before Lowen's untimely death. Dan, through it all, also voiced TV shows, including The Family Guy and American Dad, still to this day, as well as over 100 commercials, sang in the films Happy Feet, two Ice Age pictures, Rio, The Lorax, to name just some. The secret to his success? Go for it. Persistence. The only answer is “Yes.” It's worked pretty well for him. Dan told innumerable stories to exemplify his point. A man of service, Dan has served as SAG-AFTRA's National Vice President of Recording Artists/Singers, and is still on the board, he is a Trustee of the AFM & SAG-AFTRA Intellectual Property Rights Distribution Fund, is a member of the Mechanical Licensing Collective's Unclaimed Royalties Oversight Committee, and is on the board of the Artists rights alliance, and recently spoke before the House Judiciary Committee on AI, where, in solution, he has been quoted requesting, the 3 Cs: Consent, Credit, Compensation. Dan treated us to a passionate We Belong, and a gorgeous Rose In the WIndow, his collaboration with the late Preston Sturges from his latest album, Horizon Line. This time with Dan was heartwarming and soul-filling and will stay with me for a long time to come. Being in Dan's good company is always inspiring, always fun, even if we are in the midst of our Mets/Dodgers rivalry. Go Mets! In this thought-provoking episode, hosts Phillip Ramsey and old friend of the show Dan Navarro delve into the concept of transformational giving, discussing its significance and how to practice generosity with intelligence and enthusiasm. We are introduced to Verne Murray, whose stories and insights provide practical approaches to generosity that can shift our typical understanding of wealth accumulation. We start by exploring the difference between transactional and transformational giving, learning how the latter can enrich lives far beyond the monetary aspect. Verne shares his personal giving story that highlights the biblical principle of putting giving at the forefront, leading to a heart transformation and a deeper understanding of stewardship.Key Takeaways: Transformational giving is focused on making a meaningful impact and involves a deep connection between the giver and their values. Stewardship is a central theme; it's not just about the amount given, but the heart and intention behind the giving. Effective giving should use both the heart and the mind, utilizing tools like donor-advised funds to maximize generosity. Early engagement with financial planning for giving is crucial for maximizing the potential impact of one's charitable efforts. The legacy of generosity is not just measured in terms of wealth transferred but also in the values and experiences that are passed on to future generations.

This week on Roots Music Rambler, hosts Francesca Folinazzo (Frank) and Jason Falls (Falls) visit with singer-songwriter Jesse Lynn Madera whose new album “Speed of Sound” is out. She pulled together a list of heavy-hitter producers to make this new record including Dan Navarro of Lowen and Navarro fame, and Grammy winners Jim Scott and Ryan Hadlock. The early single from the album “Last Calls” features Navarro and is turning some heads in the Americana space. Frank and Falls explored the new album, her roots growing up in both West Virginia and Texas, her creative flow and inspiration and the role her actor husband Hemky Madera (Weeds, Kaleidoscope, Spider Man: Homecoming) plays in her writing. Plus our hosts discuss a somewhat controversial topic in the Americana music space: Do women have to have a gimmick to get noticed? The question was inspired by a theory posed by a marketing and promotions pro in the space and opened an interesting conversation.  And, as usual, Frank and Falls offer up their weekly recommendations for new music to listen to in their Pickin' the Grinnin' segment.  Don't forget you can now show your support of the show with Roots Music Rambler's new merch, now available at rootsmusicrambler.com/store. My guest today is the one and only Dan Navarro. Dan was so kind to do this interview because he had just arrived in London and it was about 1 in the morning for him when we recorded. His career is as varied as it is long. It started when he was just a kid, with his cousin Dave, but it began several branches earlier in his family tree. Dan has done everything from being a singing waiter to voice over artist, to doing jingles, to writing iconic pop songs. In fact, his job as a singing waiter is where he met his long time collaborator, Eric Lowen. But it wasn't an instant connection. But once they clicked, it was obvious to them what they had. They wrote, recorded, and toured like crazy. But a personal tragedy almost ended his musical career. But it ultimately resulted in writing one of the most well known songs from the 80's. And years later, when Eric couldn't tour anymore due to advancing ALS, Dan forged a new career as a solo artist. He also became a prolific live streamer during the pandemic, streaming 6 days a week. He has released his latest album, Horizon Line and, no surprise, it's full of great music. There are so many great stories behind these songs and Dan tells me as many as he can before he had to get some sleep! You can get the album at dannavarro.com or wherever you buy music. This week's guest, Dave Coker, was shopping at the original Tower Records location in Sacramento when he was 10 years old. When he started working at the Tower Broadway store in 1968, the San Francisco Tower store had just opened and soon the world of music retail would open itself up to Coker Dave. Going to College and doing Military service while working on and off for Tower in 1973,  Dave was riding his bike down the street when Russ Solomon flagged him down and asked him if he wanted to go to a new store they were opening in Stockton, CA. Dave talks about the origins of his nickname, running his first store in Stockton, being transferred to Westwood in Los Angeles and partying way too much on company time and off and giving career advice to one of his buyers and future recording artist, Dan Navarro. Getting the offer to move to the lush, green state of Washington at just the time he wanted to get out of the craziness of LA, Dave mad his move, first to Tacoma and then to the U-District store where his video store employed members of the band Green River. Dave explains why top shelf record label people passed up jobs in Los Angeles to stay in Seattle and the camaraderie of the music professionals in the Northwest.  Dave also reminisces about the origins of the Tower Annual Conference (TAC) and how things changed when Tower went from a small, local operation to a world-wide concern.

James Lee Stanley is chicken soup for my pandemic weary soul. I'm talking Grandma Katz's soup, the most flavorful, soothing, healing, and delicious. I was having a kinda funky day, an hour and a half in James' good company… hearing his stories, listening and watching him play, was just what the doctor ordered. There's a reason this man has opened for everyone from Bonnie Raitt, Art Garfunkle, Bill Cosby (before we knew), Robin Williams, Dionne Warwick, and Robin Trower, to name just some. His 50+ years friendship and musical partnership with Peter Tork was covered from start to bottom when Peter was felled by rare cancer under his tongue. Shockingly, James survived his own bout of tongue cancer months later, when his beloved wife Evelina suggested an endoscopy, without cause. James recounted the discovery, cause, treatment, and his miraculous, speedy recovery to health, singing at a gig a mere few months post-surgery. He detailed the diet to boost his immune system and, from which he lost 35 pounds, and has kept it off for two years. That alone makes this worth the listen. But there's so much more from this man who opened for Steven Wright for three years at the height of his fame, great story there, has released 35 albums, so many stories there, wrote a musical, appeared on Star Trek Deep Space 9 for five years, we didn't even get to that. James treated us to a haunting new one, Heart in Amber, nothing like hearing the origin of a song, Moonlight Ride, from his All Wood And Doors, and a Stanley classic, When Love Comes Knocking Around, which I can't stop singing. Happens every time I hear it. We talked about his upcoming album, All Wood And Led with Dan Navarro, and the Gary J. Katz (who made docs on Badfinger, Humble Pie, Steve Marriott, Manassas) documentary, The Extraordinary Journey of James Lee Stanley, making festival rounds currently and soon to drop. The man could always play, sing and entertain the crap out of us, he's looking and sounding better than ever. Looks like the year and half forced hiatus served in its fashion. I feel so damn good in the wake of this time with James. Two thumbs and all other digits way up. A treasured friend and a gem of an artist, you can find all of James' music at JamesLeeStanley.com - I for one, after hearing him again want more, more, more. In 1996, Ed was invited to teach acting to animators at PDI/DreamWorks in Palo Alto, California, when that company was working on the movie “Antz”, starring Woody Allen. After the film was released, Ed wrote the book “Acting for Animators”, and it was quickly embraced by the entire animation industry. Today, it is available in a revised 4th edition, published by Routledge in London.

Dan Navarro best known for being in the super duo Lowen and Navarro - writers of We Belong, the mega hit for Pat Benetar. It has since been recorded by several others and featured in many movies, tv shows and including Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby,  Pitch Perfect 2,  Deadpool 2, and the season one finale of Dynasty and In the season 3 Finale of Santa Clarita Diet and just recently in a new Pepsi commercial. Unfortunately, we lost Eric Lowen in 2012 to ALS otherwise known as Lou Gerhigs Disease. It was a terrible  blow the songwriting  community. But Dan Navarro continues to soldier on. He is a true road warrior in every sense. In fact, when I talked with Dan, he was in his car on the way from a gig the night before in Lancaster, Pennsylvania - to Baltimore, 45 miles. Oh how I loved spending time with James Lee Stanley, a one of a kind, gazillion threat: amazing songwriter, stupendous voice, charming, handsome, smart, funny... fabulous! And, oh the life he's lived. A pro at 16 with a recording contract and friends like Cass Elliot and Peter Tork, before the Mamas and Papas and The Monkees... Henry Dilz, early advocates Les Paul, Bill Graham, a 10 album recording contract with Wooden Nickel (RCA), Jerry Weintraub... starting his own label, Beachwood Recordings, the first artist to record a Stephen Bishop tune, having hits of his own, running around with author Tom Robbins who put him in a book or two, the inside on how Peter became a Monkee, and Graham Nash joined Crosby & Stills, sharing Billboard raves with Queen, Loggins & Messina, and Alvin Lee; opening for Bonnie Raitt, Robin Williams (a mensch), Steven Wright (for 3 yrs), missing opportunities, Seinfeld, Jermaine Jackson, making opportunities, all over the place. An Emmy, Cable Ace Award-Winner, who's always earned his living doing what he loves... from arenas to intimate clubs, playing 300 gigs a year, for years, being reunited with Sheila E in my living room, having not seen her since he hired her to play percussion, long before Prince, his upcoming collaboration with Dan Navarro... there were shoutouts to Birthday Boys Liberty Devitto & Don Most, Wendy Liebman, gigging tomorrow night (8/9) with Arsenio Hall... and songs! James opened the show with his brand spanking new, rockin' Live It Up Now (my new theme song?), a mid-show surprise, updated for today's trying times, and closed with his, fantabulous, Let's Get Out of Here. The only answer is “Yes.” Dan Navarro’s creedo which has served him well, and, saved my ass more than once. With 24 hrs notice Dan stepped in, swung away and gave it 110%, as he always does. Opening the show with the beauty, Let it Ride, from his newly dropped solo CD, Shed My Skin, he told stories… Barry Cowsill *swoon*, Hanson, Cameron Dye, Deborah Pearl, Severin Browne, his cousin Dave, The Bangles, and, of course, his longtime collaborator, creative and performing partner, Eric Lowen who passed of complications of ALS in 2012, forever changing Dan’s life, in innumerable ways. He did a little Javier Bardem, talked Family Guy, and closed out the BROADcast with a mini-concert, two killer cuts from his new CD, not to be missed, and, his mega-hit for Pat Benatar, We Belong, currently featured in the box office smash, Deadpool 2. Steve Postell is man of music. So, we started with some. His. Other than a couple of weeks driving for a car service at 19, before starting his 2-year stint playing on Broadway (Evita with Patti LuPone & Mandy Patinkin) Steve has earned his living doing what he loves. Sparked by Dylan. Bob. Who, unbeknownst to him, shaped the life of his 16 yr old co-art-class student. Stories... does Steve have stories... he's played with seemingly everyone. Within minutes of meeting Steve, fresh out of Pure Prairie League, I booked him at The Rock 'N Roll Café, and continued to for the past 30 + years through his rise as a singer, songwriter, session playing, composer, producer. He's got three major CDs about to drop, Daniel Kortchmar's solo debut of his hits for everyone else, sung by hisself, featuring David Crosby, Michael McDonald, Leland Sklar, Jackson Browne, James Taylor Russell Kunkel & Waddy Wachtel. Dan Navarro's upcoming CD, and Steve's own effort aided by David Crosby & John Oates for two. He's got a Netflix doc running currently which he scored, and Robert Redford narrates. Yes, they were in the studio together. Swoon. And, he's got wisdom to share about how to do it. Be good. Get it out there. Network So much has been right place, right time. Inspiring! He played a little more, closing with a magnificent tune from his upcoming disc. Loved every moment of this and assure you will, too. The Road Taken, Celebrity Maps to Success. Lowen and Navarro were a beloved acoustic duo with an unorthodox genesis and a premature end. Formed in Los Angeles in the early 1980s, Eric Lowen and Dan Navarro's initial success came when they composed the song, “We Belong,” which would become a major chart hit for Pat Benatar in 1984. They started actively performing together in 1987 and grew their audience the old-fashioned way - by connecting with their audience at hundreds of shows and releasing ten albums over fifteen years before Lowen was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2004. They continued to work together until 2009, when Lowen's condition had deteriorated to the point where he needed to focus on his health. But even before his partner was forced to step away from performing, Navarro had begun to do what any person for whom music was a compulsion would do, which was to forge ahead. He wasn't without self-doubts about how he could be a viable artist on his own after such a long, fruitful and musically intimate partnership, but the fans kept coming. And so did the songs. By early 2014, Navarro's schedule is as busy as ever – touring at a national level, serving on the boards of SAG-AFTRA, Folk Alliance and others, advocating for performer's rights in Washington D.C. and preparing to release his first studio album of new material since Eric Lowen's passing in 2012. Along with the upcoming Shed My Skin album, Navarro also released an acoustic album comprised of demos called Skinless in late 2013 that serves as a confident primer on what Navarro is capable of on his own. And it's really good.
