And baby makes 3! We talk a lot about changes and transitions on this podcast. One of the most beautiful, emotional, exciting, unexpected transitions a woman can go through is pregnancy. We are so over the moon for our girl, Helen and the announcement of her & Phil's first child (due at the end of the year! #babywuwang). Being a mother is something Helen always dreamed of, but along with the joy of knowing she's expanding her family, comes the emotional & physical journey of bearing a child. From finding out when she was pregnant, accepting her physical transformation, learning how to navigate social situations as the only “pregnant friend”, to thoughts on becoming a mom, join us as Helen opens up and shares her pregnancy journey with us! Let's be real! The invites for weddings start to pile up as we get older and fill up our social calendars. In our first season, we talked about our fantasies of our dream weddings, but we realized that there's a perspective that we didn't talk about...attending a wedding as a guest! Whether the waves of weddings have just begun or you've attended a handful the last 10 years, there are a lot of traditions and unspoken things you need to know as a guest. From how much money to gift, do you bring a +1, to things you should expect when attending a wedding. So for this episode, we walk through the tips we learned, the different cultural ceremonies we've attended, and share some fun & cringe-worthy stories as wedding guests! On October 30, 2003, 28-year-old Marcie Crane and her husband were staying at a hotel in Marietta, Georgia. The two had been estranged but were trying to rekindle their relationship. While her husband was out running errands, Marcie disappeared. Before she left, she gave a housekeeper the key to the room and asked her to give it to her husband. That is the last time that anyone heard from Marcie. After her disappearance, several suspicious stories began to surface. A man who lent Marcie money had allegedly threatened her. Another man who she had previously dated and worked with for many years in the real estate business, he moved to another state and cut off contact with Marcie's family. Her family later learned that he had been using a fake name. Her family was also wary of her husband because she hadn't known him long and met him online. If you are a perfectionist or recovering perfectionist, motherhood might just kick your butt in the worst ways. Motherhood requires you to give up control of everything: when you eat when you sleep when you shower how clean your house is when you get your work done how to manage others (babies are not manageable, neither are husbands) how to manage emotions (cause an exhausted, hormonal mama has no emotional regulation) how your body looks/feels You can’t control any of it AND you’re supposed to be actually enjoying some of it. WHAT? HOW??? Adaptability is the gift of motherhood. But, I’ll be the first to tell you it does not feel like a gift to a Type A perfectionistic kinda gal. Adaptability might be your worst life skill. In fact, if you dislike spontaneity, last minute change of schedules, going with the flow, figuring things out on the fly, motherhood will knock you down. And you won’t be able to get back up until you learn to become more adaptable. No one tells you about the very necessary skill of motherhood. You just see everyone around you being all adaptable and you’re thinking, “how the hell do they do it?” How do other moms not lose their minds when naptime doesn’t happen? How do other moms keep their cool when they have to cancel something fun because of a sick kid or a massive tantrum? How do other moms go with the flow and take the punches so effortlessly? Some of them do not control freaks by nature like you and me. And some of them have learned to lean into the unpredictability of motherhood – which I know sounds just awful, but it’s actually really helpful. Improving your adaptability will help you enjoy motherhood and get out of your own way when things change on a dime (like every hour of #everydamnday.) Listen in to hear how you can start taking small steps to become more adaptable and start building confidence around your ability to go with the flow like all your zen mama friends.
