We talk all sorts in this episode, from connectedness with our bodies, intuition and how this all connects to a wider spirituality, to grief and how we build healthy relationships with our bodies and build resilience. We also explore how the system we all rigged, in, is simply not built for the thriving of human bodies. We had such fun recording this, make sure you check it out.

Purity culture isn't a thing that happens to OTHER people. The tendrils of sexual repression have insinuated themselves into all of our lives. In the second half of our conversation with Jamie Lee Finch, we see how evangelical Christianity's restrictive approach to sex, sex education and owning your body and desire isn't that different from what so many of us experienced. It's a shocking and bracing discovery that has profound implications for our lives. This conversation is funny and weird and dark. We get into why so many pastors can't stop talking about their “smoking hot wife” and how missionary work might be completely inseparable from sexual sublimation. Jamie Lee Finch is the author of You Are Your Own: A Reckoning with the Religious Trauma of Evangelical Christianity. Make sure you check out the first half of our conversation from last week! What if your body was your closest friend instead of…whatever it is now? Jamie Lee Finch is a wise guide for so many women who are asking - what would a healthy relationship with my body look like? In this conversation we go deep into why we need to relate to our bodies like A PERSON and the healing that can come as a result. Virtually NONE of us are free of body issues, whether they're around our shape, or desire, or how we change with aging. Jamie's unwavering stance for our health, wholeness and living an integrated life is the message we need to hear right now. Jamie is also the author of You Are Your Own: A Reckoning with the Religious Trauma of Evangelical Christianity. Next week, in the second half of our conversation, we'll explore what it's been like to deal with the lasting effects of having been raised in purity culture and so much more. With one more new episode left in 2021, here's a classic episode with Jamie Lee Finch and my former co-host Chuck Parson. Before the new episode, if you're able, check out the Season Two finale of We're Here on HBO. My next guest is Dustin VanDyke and was featured in that episode. You won't want to miss this! Unbuckling The Bible Belt: Brady Hardin and Chuck Parson takes the show on the road to Nashville, TN to interview Jamie Lee Finch on the subjects of sexuality, the dangers of Purity Culture, and the downfalls of Patriarchy. Jamie describes how much of her journey after leaving religion involves understanding her body. She gives life-changing advice on how to become a whole person and heal from trauma. Bonus: Listen to Jamie reading her own original poems throughout the episode. In this episode, we have a conversation with the awesome queer couple Angel and Nicole Morris! They discuss their winding journeys of faith, the challenges they faced when coming out at a Christian university, and the spiritual practices that they've discovered and found meaningful as they now find themselves no longer identifying as Christians. We also talk about how embodiment is really important, and that listening to your body (look up the work of Jamie Lee Finch, and April also talks in the episode about what this looks like for her) is an important spiritual practice that had been denied to us in the churches we spent our teenage years in. You can find Angel on Insta, TikTok, and Twitter @canklemorris (which, we found out on the podcast, is a reference to a high school nickname) and you can find Nicole on Instagram @coliejean. You should also check out The Voyage Meetup, @thevoyagemeetup on Insta--it's an awesome group for LGBTQ+ people of faith, where April has met so many amazing people, including Angel and Nicole! The Voyage meets on Zoom (info in Insta bio) the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 6PM Pacific Time. There weren't really any specific resources mentioned in this episode but I'll just echo here what Nicole said about looking into witchy spiritual practices: make sure you are not culturally appropriating from anyone, do your research around what is open to be shared (such as tarot cards) and what is not. Our social media: @reclaimingthegarden on Insta, @RtGardenPodcast on Twitter. Our personal accounts: @thatpunchabletheaternerd, @April_TheWriter (April is on Twitter and Insta). Also, our podcast account follows a bunch of awesome folks + podcasts in the exvangelical/deconstruction world and progressive Christian world, so if you're looking for more resources, that's a great place to start!
Note: Intro ends and our conversation with Erica begins at 9 min.Hey friends, and welcome back to another episode and we're so excited that you are here! Jamie Lee Finch, author of You Are Your Own, returns to the show! We had been planning to talk this month for quite some time, but our conversation has a different tenor than we anticipated. This is one conversation among many about issues surrounding exvangelical/deconstruction spaces--and this has happened before. Listen to the show for further context, but we're still going to try and talk about why things like these moments of drama happen, and why these cycles of commentary occur: what is general to the types of conversations we have now, and what is particular to post-evangelical spaces and the sorts of traumas that are activated. I've been talking about this in various ways on other shows recently, including these conversations with Your Favorite Aunts & Activist Theology. We also talk about Jamie's upcoming course, Your Body Is a Person. Registration closes on 8/31/2021, so act fast! One production note: the wrong mic recorded my audio, so it's of lower quality. I had a fantastic time chatting with embodiment coach Jamie Lee Finch about our innate bodily wisdom in this episode. Jamie explained why she thinks you should view your body as a person, and we talked about transitioning from our upbringings in high-touch religions to now having much more connected relationships with our bodies. Today on the Everything Belongs Podcast, Madison is once again, in conversation with Jamie Lee Finch. Jamie is a sexuality and embodiment coach, intuitive healer, self-conversation facilitator, author and poet. As a survivor of both childhood trauma and religious trauma, Jamie has a deep familiarity with the language used by those who come from authoritarian backgrounds and desire to return to a feeling of wholeness within their bodies — after years of assimilating to a belief that required them to separate from themselves. She believes our bodies have a language and that language is our mother tongue. The work that she does is in reconnecting people to their bodies, the language their body is speaking, and the voice their body is speaking with; it is deep reconciliation healing work on a mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical level. She specializes in reframing the reality of embodiment through that language of relationship, and works with individuals of all genders who consistently find within themselves an inability to connect with, communicate with, and successfully relate to their own bodies — physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. In this episode, Madison and Jamie speak on Jamie's experience exiting a cult and how she healed, cult dynamics and evangelicalism, Jamie's journey to heal her body and her new course "Your Body is a Person", and much more.Listen in and find the full show notes here: http://madisonmorrigan.com/podcast-rss-feed/59Guest LinksJamie's Website: https://jamieleefinch.com/Jamie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/iamjamieleefinch/Jamie's Course: https://course.jamieleefinch.com/pages/your-body-is-a-person

The story of a “hell” is present in many religious traditions, but how does that impact the way we experience the present moment? What really is hell? And what do we do about all of the fear and shame it causes, even if we don’t logically believe in it? In this episode, Emily Capshaw, Michael Gungor, Jamie Lee Finch, and Audrey Assad all share how the story of hell has shifted for them.
In this episode, Emily covers Part II of her series on purity culture from her blog The Life She Wrote. Part II explores the teaching of modesty, and by extension rape culture and clergy abuse.[Content warning: sexual assault, clergy abuse] Created as an addition to her blog, The Life She Wrote: The Podcast will expand on the topics of faith deconstruction, religious trauma and other ex-evangelical topics by providing a more in-depth look at the content and sharing stories from readers and listeners. Love your neighbor, love your enemy. Jamie Lee Finch (the Liturgists) and Propaganda (Red Couch Podcast) discuss with Joey “loving others” in the context of people's personal journeys, social media “venting,” and the ability or inability to humanize others. Should we respond to “ignorant hate” differently than how we respond to just straight up, ‘ol hate? Do some legitimately have a harder time loving because of their place in society and past experiences? And should we be cautious in using the word “should” when it comes to another person's ability to love well? Im sure many of you already know her from her book, You Are Your Own, but she is also an embodiment coach, acting (as she puts it) as a mediator between you and your body. In this episode we talk about that feeling of overwhelm when you are first leaving your faith, we talk about the importance of reconnecting with your body, and what that can look like.We also dive into the importance and beauty of grief, and about the healing power of connecting with your anger. Today my friend, embodiment coach Jamie Lee Finch, joins me to discuss how we can become fully embodied, to connect more fully with ourselves and our bodies. Jamie talks about the big shift from seeing our bodies not as an it, but a he/she/they - a person, and the profound impact it can have on our own personal journeys. She talks about how we learn to listen to and respond our bodies as they speak to us, and the transformation she had in her own life when she learned to do this, and how she's seen this in her clients. We also discuss my experience of doing this in my work with Jamie, and the real time change which can happen in so many aspects of our being, including our mental and emotional health, and in escaping toxic purity culture. Jamie also shares some simple, practical steps we can all take to begin doing this work, and knowing and listening to our bodies better. Jamie's work has been transformative for me - I know it can be for you too.
“Cancel Culture” is a relatively recent phrase that has entered the cultural milieu in a profound and divisive way. In this “mega episode” of the Liturgists podcast, Michael Gungor, William Matthews, Dr. Hillary McBride, Jamie Lee Finch, Dr. Robyn Henderson-Espinoza, Chloé Valdary, and Peter Rollins engage in a series of conversations that deeply explore this potentially sensitive and polarizing topic through multiple lenses, identities, and experiences. We have been working on a documentary for over a year about The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The full documentary will be released on September 22, 2020 and we will be hosting a live stream that same day with the people who produced it including William Matthews, Jamie Lee Finch, Christian Adkins, Anna Jane Joyner, Karlin Itchoak and others. To find out more visit https://theliturgists.com/arctic As we prep to launch the film, we wanted to re-release this episode from October 2019. In the last 3 weeks the refuge has come under even more severe threat as the Trump Administration takes steps to open it up for drilling. In August of 2019, Michael Gungor, Science Mike, William Matthews, and Jamie Lee Finch embarked on a trip to the Arctic circle to experience some of the last untouched wilderness on the planet and hear from the Gwich'in people. The Gwich'in are Athabaskan-speaking Indigenous peoples who lives in the Arctic region of Alaska and Canada. Their sacred lands include areas within the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. In September 2019, the Trump Administration said it would "seek to open up the entire coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas exploration, picking the most aggressive development option for an area long closed to drilling" to cite The Washington Post. The violence and destruction caused by the removal of long standing protections by the United States is difficult to overstate. Here we go with week 3 of the Faith Made Welcome, a progressive podcast on faith brought to you by Commonwealth Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia. This episode is the third installment in our “What The World Needs Now” series. This four-week “study” of sorts features discussions and reflection sparked from a special activist sermon series CBC and several other congregations are taking part in this month. Each week in August, an activist preacher is giving us their take on the theme. Today’s episode is based upon a sermon of this series, which you can watch on our Youtube Channel, preached by Rev. Melissa McQueen-Simmons, who is ordained in the United Church of Christ, and serves as the Faith Director for Many Voices: A Black Church Movement for Gay and Transgender Justice. Rev. McQueen-Simmons argues that today, what the world needs is radical love. In this episode of the podcast, Kelley Wool, a hugely talented member of the CBC choir, joins Pastor Robin Anderson and Cheri Spiegel discuss this excellent sermon, and chat about Song of Songs, radical love, and the effects of purity culture. About Rev. Melissa McQueen-SimmonsRev. Melissa N. McQueen-Simmons is a native of Greensboro, North Carolina and a first-generation college graduate. She is a mother to a charismatic toddler, Camdyn McQueen-Simmons, and the spouse to the beautiful and graceful Vondalyn McQueen-Simmons. She is a sister, an aunt, a friend, and Iraqi-Veteran. Melissa was born into Generation X, the demographic cohort between Baby Boomers and Millennials. She earned her Master of Divinity (M.Div.) with an emphasis in Pastoral Care at Howard University. Rev. McQueen-Simmons coordinates panel discussions relevant to social justice issues regarding the LGBT community and the Black Church. She conducts necessary research on the Black church, community, and ongoing sources regarding biblical scholarship and sexuality. She also assists with helping pastors and religious leaders address social and theological opposition in the Black community towards LGBT equality. She helps institutions create radically inclusive faith spaces. About Our Guest, Kelley WoolKelley Wool (she/her) is a proud member of CBC and enjoys singing for Sunday services. She is passionate about theology, LGBTQ and anti-racist activism, and all things nerdy (seriously, she has a Lord of the Rings tattoo). Kelley writes about the intersection of faith and sexuality in her blog "Queerly Christian." Kelley lives in Alexandria with her husband Zak, as well as a rescue dog, cat, and bearded dragon. A former evangelical turned witch, Jamie Lee Finch shares wisdom from this ancient goddess religion on navigating the climate crisis. We explore her surprising spiritual journey, the history of witches as healers, how climate justice connects with desire and sex magic, and why honoring our bodies is critical in the fight to heal our earth home. A sex witch, embodiment coach, activist, and poet, Jamie is also the author of: “You Are Your Own: A Reckoning with the Religious Trauma of Evangelical Christianity”. In this new “Bring the Light” season, we’re exploring how spirituality helps us face the climate crisis. This isn’t something we can beat with technology, policy and science alone. It takes heart and strength and courage - the kinds of things many people draw from their spiritual practices and faith traditions. I sat down with my good friend, embodiment coach, and author Jamie Lee Finch. We talk all about the insanely complex bodies we inhabit and the experience of trauma, both large and small, that often leads us to dissociate from that body. In her own healing and with her clients she practices active embodied listening where we stop referring to the body as an "it" but rather as a "he, she, or they" worthy of our appreciation. We talk about the useful signals and messages our body sends us, the healing that comes through facing our pain, and the process of making a home in our bodies. This is an important one that I'm very excited about- we'd love to hear what you thought. Go follow us on Instagram at @mapofeverythingpodcast and sign up for our email list at www.mapofeverythingpod.com. Cheers!
Many of us feel like something is wrong with us if we are single. Some times we don't feel loved or feel unlovable. But what does it mean to be "single?" And what does it mean to be "loved?" Those don't have to be related. The way we receive love or feel love for ourselves is often tied up in how other people view us and the cultural norms we experience everyday. What if we separated those? In this episode, Dr. Hillary McBride, Key Williams, Jamie Lee Finch, and Michael Gungor talk about the dynamics that affect how we live and experience love. We can tell ourselves a different story about being single — a positive story that we can experience love regardless of our relationship status. You are not alone! You can join us each Sunday to talk with other liturgists around the world and meet in small groups. It is one of the most meaningful things we do. This episode is the story of our trip to that area, and what we learned from the people there. We want to give a special shout out to The Wilderness Society for making this episode possible and to Dan Ritzman from Arctic Wild for his guidance in Alaska. We're back from hiatus, and we have a great show for you. My guest this week is Jamie Lee Finch, who returns to the show to talk about her new book, You Are Your Own: A Reckoning with the Religious Trauma of Evangelical Christianity. In this conversation, we talk about Jamie's story, her work as an embodiment and sexuality coach, and what embodiment means for people who've left evangelicalism. I also share a bit about my own experiences with epilepsy and how it both drove me toward evangelicalism and made me feel disembodied. You can purchase Jamie's book directly at jamieleefinch.com This episode is a bit longer, so I eschew the regular intro to get straight to it. (Also Logic was being a huge jerk when I was trying to record it.) It's good to be back.

In this episode we talk about our bodies, that the body can remember and harbor memories in its flesh, religious trauma, and hope in healing.
Jamie Lee Finch is a musician, poet and a Relationship Guide between humans and their bodies. She works with individuals of all genders who consistently find within themselves an inability to connect with, communicate with, and successfully relate to their own bodies. Many of these individuals are survivors of fundamentalist religion who now experience a range of physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual conditions. I hope you enjoy the show!
Jamie Lee Finch is an intuitive healer, sex witch, poet and relationship guide between humans and their bodies. She believes our bodies have a language, and that that language is our mother tongue. Trauma, she says, in any form -- including toxic experiences with fundamentalist religious belief -- is responsible for breaking down our ability to communicate successfully with our bodies; and any sort of illness or imbalance, dysfunction or disease is our bodies’ frustrated attempts to connect with and communicate to us. The work that Jamie does is in reassociating people with their bodies, the language their body is speaking, and the voice their body is speaking with; it is deep reconciliation healing work on a mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical level. Jamie is based in Nashville, Tennessee, and her practice is fully booked until 2019. Clearly, there’s a demand for this type of reconnection with our bodies. Indoctrination is one very essential topic that permeates everything we talk about on this show, but so far we haven't really addressed it directly. It is so pervasive within religious systems that its almost impossible to talk about anything on this show without it looming in the background. That makes it difficult to really define and nail down. OED defines it as “The process of teaching a person or group to accept a set of beliefs uncritically.” What you end up with is a long line of dominoes, each domino is one of the things you have to believe to in order for your religious system to remain whole. Indoctrination is the insistence that you don't poke, prod, remove, or even too closely observe the any of the dominoes because what happens if you knock one over? The whole system is exposed. Host Brady and Chuck sat down their friends, Tim Warzel and Jamie Lee Finch, to discuss the ever-present ghost called indoctrination. TW: This episode contains stories of sexual, physical, and spiritual abuse (not in great detail). The episode that kept growing! What started as a mini-project to release while Chuck worked on a more complex episode kept putting itself in our view as the news of sexual predators poured out. Much of the world has a problem knowing, defining, and respecting consent. Women, who were once made to feel powerless, have proven their predators wrong by coming forward while others, for a wide spectrum of reasons, remain silent. We speak with one of our favorite guests, Jamie Lee Finch, about consent, desire for power that leads to abuse, and sexual ethics. Listener Kyla Bauer ends the episode with a powerful story of how her family did what was “right” in the eyes of the Bible, but it led them right back into the cycle of abuse.
