It's been awhile since we've had an episode on female sexuality. We know this topic can be a bit taboo in our culture, and maybe among some of your friendship circles as well. As Asian women, our relationship with our sexuality can be incredibly complicated and nuanced. At times it may be disheartening that we cannot control society's dialogue about Asian women and sexuality, but we can start by controlling our own personal narratives with our sexuality. Join us for a conversation with Anna Lee, co-founder of Lioness, the women-led sexual health startup that built the world's first and only smart vibrator that gives biofeedback data to help people learn more about their own bodies and improve their understanding of sexual pleasure. Anna is a big advocate in Lioness's mission to expand research in sexual health and to destigmatize female sexuality. In today's episode, we dig a little deeper with our parents, to hear & share the stories that they never told us. As we get older, we realize we (their children) are the only ones who will live to carry on our parents' journeys and legacies. From stories of their adolescence playing on the rooftops of a small village in China, to pains they felt in being separated from their own parents as they assimilated to America, to their meet-cute at a random mahjong night...we share all of this in today's episode. We hope these stories get some light as we pass down these never-been-shared tales from our parents & encourage you all to have these convos with your family members as you sit down for the holidays. ______________ This episode was edited by Michelle Hsieh. **Disclaimer: This episode contains discussion about drug, alcohol use, sexual abuse, and addiction.** The topic of addiction is rather taboo in Asian culture, so it is often unaddressed and misunderstood. Many people are unaware, uneducated, unprepared, and suffer alone. Research has found that Asian-Americans between 18 and 25 drank heavily although they were considered a “low-risk group” with alcohol abuse, and that 14% of Asian-Americans or Pacific Islanders between 18 to 25 need substance abuse treatment — which is only slightly lower than the 21% average of other ethnic groups. September was National Recovery Month, and we were lucky to have Yvette join us in this conversation. Yvette is a Filipino-American, and certified addiction specialist. Yvette works with AADAP - The Asian American Drug Abuse Program dedicated to serving Asian Pacific Islanders and other under-served communities with substance abuse services throughout Los Angeles County. She's here with us today to share her personal experience with addiction. Let's be real! The invites for weddings start to pile up as we get older and fill up our social calendars. In our first season, we talked about our fantasies of our dream weddings, but we realized that there's a perspective that we didn't talk about...attending a wedding as a guest! Whether the waves of weddings have just begun or you've attended a handful the last 10 years, there are a lot of traditions and unspoken things you need to know as a guest. From how much money to gift, do you bring a +1, to things you should expect when attending a wedding. So for this episode, we walk through the tips we learned, the different cultural ceremonies we've attended, and share some fun & cringe-worthy stories as wedding guests! Summer is usually a time when we all get outdoors, gather with friends and family, and generally interact with a lot of people. However, this summer season is a unique one - as we are on “what we hope to be” the tail end of a global pandemic. By now, we hope you all are vaccinated or are on your way to getting vaccinated. I know it may feel as if COVID is no longer a big issue, but variants of COVID are developing and starting to pose a large threat, and the longer we delay getting more people vaccinated, the longer it will take for all of this to pass. Thanks to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services for making this episode happen. Go to vaccines.gov for further vaccine info and find a vaccine near you. Everyone 12 and over is eligible. Why is verbalizing or expressing love to our parents so hard? Growing up, many of us did not use words of affirmation as a love language with our parents. It could be mostly due to our contrasting generational Asian upbringing or the difference in language. Regardless, there are so many unspoken words of love and gratitude that we haven’t shared with them. As kids, we saw our parents as the people who’d nag us, drive us to our practices, automatically pack our lunch boxes for us, etc. However, as we get older, we start to see them as more than just our moms or dads. We start to see them as humans and understand the struggle that they came from to truly provide the best for us, their children. Today, we take the time to read letters that we each wrote to express our appreciation, love, and unspoken words to our moms and dads. Also, Happy (belated) Mother's Day to all the mom and mom figures out there! Friend, Daughter, Podcast host -- are all titles that the three of us have in common. Today, we want to explore another title we share... Sister! The three of us are fortunate to have grown up with either a younger sibling or an older sibling. From causing havoc in the house together, someone to be our parent’s guinea pig, to having someone to get you out of trouble...there is no one else in the world that has seen us or gone through things alongside us like our brother & sisters. As we start to get older, it’s setting in how cool and fortunate we are to have our “forever friends” in our life. Today, we’ll be sharing all the fun & annoying love of our relationships with our one and only, siblings. Thanks Anne, Brandon, and Patty for joining us today! To many brides and grooms, the past year may have felt more like a Wedding “miss” than Wedding “bliss", with all the unexpected changes due to the pandemic. From changing expectations of the big day, bridal gowns that remain hanging in closets, to wedding invites with TBD dates…a lot of adjustments had to be made for many couples. Our bride, Helen, also had to work through these changes, and she shares all the wedding updates in this episode. Did she find her dream wedding dress? When are Helen & Phil getting married? How can the bridal party be supportive during these times? And what are the wedding trends to anticipate for 2021? We are a couple of weeks into 2021, the year following an U.S. election year unlike any other many of us in our lifetime have, and perhaps ever will, experience. And though we are hot off the inauguration last night where Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were formally sworn into office, marking the start of a new presidency, the intensity and aftermath of the social and political landscape from 2020 continues to affect us all. Like many people, we have been feeling overwhelmed, and sometimes numb, by all that has happened, and continues to happen, in our world today. To help us understand, ground, and interpret the current world state from a different perspective than our own, we are going to speak with people we think have one of the hardest jobs when it comes to coping with today’s current events - parents. This month, we are focused on the topic of careers and entrepreneurship. To find a career that is the right fit, it’s important to not only understand WHAT we want but WHO we are - what are we good at? Understanding our personal strengths, weaknesses, and work values is not a one-time exercise. It requires a lot of patience, dedication, and active energy to understand ourselves, and also account for all the ways in which we change over the span of our working years. To prepare for this episode, we each took a number of evaluation tests that measure our skills, personality preferences, and work values. We’ll talk about everything from our inductive reasoning skills to structural visualization skills to dominance vs. influence and end with a fun Buzzfeed quiz to evaluate what career we should each be in. Take the quizzes & follow along in our conversation as we dissect our results! If you’ve watched the “Entrepreneur” video by Pharrell & Jay-Z, then you may recognize Denise Woodard’s face. That’s because her story of being rejected by 86 investors before getting that one yes from Jay-Z is highlighted in the video. Well, we actually spoke to Denise last year as she was embarking on this process. So it made my heart swell with pride to see this Side Hustle Pro alum thriving and scaling her business. Denise has always had her hands on a winning idea. Partake Foods provides meals and snacks that are delicious, safe, and nutritious for conscious eaters. What started as a way for this concerned mom to give her daughter snacks that would not trigger her allergies, has evolved into a brand that’s sold in major retailers. In this rewind episode of Side Hustle Pro, meet Denise, the founder behind this amazing brand, and hear: Why she’s so passionate about gluten and allergen-free food and how she actually got started How she, a non-baker, was able to start a cookie and snack brand The pivotal point when she made the decision to leave Coke to pursue Partake full time, and so much more Check out this episode and others on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Soundcloud, and Stitcher This episode is brought to you by: SkillShare- Get two free months of Premium Membership at skillshare.com/sidehustlepro. Tracey Pickett wants to make sure that you don’t get caught slippin’ in the rain. She is the founder of Hairbrella, an innovative rain hat combining fashion and function to protect women's hair from the rain. Not only is she an entrepreneur, but an attorney, inventor, and speaker. Tracey’s original plan was to “get law school out of the way,” then get a job, and she did just that. While working in intellectual property as a lawyer, the entrepreneurial bug started tapping on her shoulder. It reminded her of the promise she made to herself prior to beginning law school. Tracey vowed to not spend more than five years in a legal career without pursuing the business ideas she had for her life: that included her first entrepreneurial endeavor, Eboticon. Although, along with some colleagues, she’d been working on Eboticon, an emoji app to represent Black culture on nights and weekends. While still working full time as a lawyer, Tracey managed to meet her deadline, pace herself, save up a year’s worth of income, and complete the first test version of Hairbrella. And on her fifth work anniversary, she quit! After leaving her job, Tracey launched a Kickstarter campaign with a prototype in hand, and the rest is history. Take a listen, and learn: All about the financial investments Tracey made to patent and prototype Hairbrella How she used early user feedback to continue to develop and improve her product How she pushed past the earliest challenges in her business to make a product that is stylish and works Check out this episode and others on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Soundcloud, and Stitcher. It’s been a while since we checked in with our Entrepreneur-In-Residence, Lisa Pegram. On today’s episode, you’ll get a look into what her life and business looks like one year after launching her beauty tech company, Belle51. Belle51 focuses on the specific skin issues of Black and Brown communities and how to treat them effectively. Lisa is no stranger to the side hustle life. She is currently in pursuit of her PhD at Columbia where she studies meta-cognition and data sciences, working in the field full-time, and managing her own company. Since I last spoke with Lisa, she now offers products such as an esthetician-grade, automatic microneedling tool, an oil serum, and a laser for hyperpigmentation. Things have been booming! You know the notion of focusing on what you have first, so you can get that where it needs to be before you add new products? Well for Lisa, she went against the grain of that and is carving out a new path for her company. She’s learned that adding products has actually increased her revenue because customers have choices within her offerings. Get to know more about how Belle51 is growing, and what Lisa has learned about marketing, scaling up and betting on herself. Lately I’ve been reminiscing on the days when I was a certified side hustler. When I was working full time and working on Side Hustle Pro on nights and weekends, I lived a completely different life from the one I live now as a full-time entrepreneur (plus a full-time entrepreneur with a baby). Being a new mom has reminded me of the side hustle mindset and all the principles that led me to be in a position of making the most out of the time that I have. The key to the side hustle life is learning how to get a lot done with not a lot of time. I did it before (and am beginning to get back into doing it again) and you can too! In this episode, I’m taking you through my seven tried and true tips that made me a side hustle queen. Take a listen to this episode, so you can master the art of the side hustle, too. Somewhere on the road between Stalingrad and Forever21, something essential got misplaced amidst the bathos. Eric works through a bottle of Red wine on air with social, literary and artistic theorist Anna Khachiyan (co-host of the explosive and popular Red Scare podcast) to find out what is brewing on the anti-woke Left among the intellectual daughters of Camille Paglia. Anna takes us through her project of the reconstructed feminine combining irreverent intellectual dominance with a return to valuing motherhood informed by her claims on Soviet & American heritage. The intellectual foundation of the intersectional “oppression Olympics” and reparations discussion is further dissected amidst the twin specters of the Armenian & Jewish genocides which mysteriously appear not to register at all with today's progressives. No puppies were eaten during this podcast, but an ambient trigger warning is otherwise in order for those with exquisite sensitivities. Garrett Lisi, the so called "Surf Bum with a Theory of Everything (or T.O.E.)", is a PhD theoretical physicist who has refused to be captured by the theoretical physics community. By making shrewd investments, he has avoided holding meaningful employment for his entire adult life. Instead, he lives in Maui and travels the world chasing the perfect wave. In this episode Garrett and Eric sit down to discuss the current status of Garrett's ideas for a final theory based on a mysterious object called E8, perhaps the oddest of mathematical symmetries to be found in the universe. Garrett and Eric have held each other in mutual “contempt” for over a decade. By vacationing together and staying in each others' homes, they had hoped to hone and deepen their mutual disgust for each other's ideas. However, as the theoretical physics community moved away from actually trying to unify our incompatible models of the physical world, it became intellectually unmoored, and drifted toward a culture of performative Cargo Cult Physics. The antagonists were thus forced by necessity to develop a begrudging admiration for each other's iconoclasm and unwillingness to give up on the original dream of Einstein to unify and understand our world. The discussion is rough but a fairly accurate depiction of scientific relationships belonging to a type that is generally not shown to the public. This may be uncomfortable for those who have been habituated to NOVA, The Elegant Universe, or other shows produced for mass consumption. We apologize in advance.
