How do you build a strong relationship with them? Are there other moms who share your struggles? In this episode, I'm thrilled to share an inspiring conversation with Kim Gameroz, the founder of Teaching Inside Out and a leading expert in helping parents and teachers cultivate social and emotional skills in children. Kim's insights are truly transformative, and I believe you'll find her approach both empowering and practical. In this episode, you'll hear:
It's amazing how just one small word can shift an entire conversation—for better or worse. Without realizing it, we often invite comparison into our discussions, creating unnecessary tension or discomfort. That's why I'm thrilled to have Kathie Gwilliam on the podcast this week! Kathie is an expert at identifying the subtle ways comparison sneaks into our language, and she's here to help us become more self-aware. In this episode, you'll learn: ✅ Three common phrases that unintentionally fuel comparison—and what to say instead. ✅ How to help your kids when they feel insecure after someone else gets a compliment. ✅ A simple way to introduce yourself with confidence. ✅ Why we need to be mindful of body-talk around our kids—plus a healthy way to process body image struggles. Since learning from Kathie, I've been catching myself making comparisons—and I'm working on changing that! I'd love to hear how this episode impacts you. This week on the podcast, we're talking about reciprocity, which simply means the back and forth of conversation—or even relationship. Most kids—most of us—lean toward either initiating or receiving. Wouldn't it be nice if our kids innately felt grateful for all we (and others) do for them? That they naturally expressed gratitude and could see how blessed they are? Certainly, some kids are more predisposed than others, but it's been my experience, and I'm guessing yours too, that this doesn't come naturally to most kids. Instead, gratitude is a skill that needs to be taught and practiced repeatedly. So the big question is: how do we teach it? Today's episode will focus on three actionable, realistic ways to teach your kids gratitude. Click play NOW to jump in! Full full show notes, including a list of takeaways, click here. I recently taught a free masterclass all about mom rage. Toward the beginning of the class, I asked the women in attendance to share something that makes them feel angry on a regular basis. One mom shared: “Feeling rejected by my teen who wants nothing to do with me. This is not the mother-daughter relationship I envisioned.”
Y'all—this one is a PLEASE LISTEN episode. We have been really excited about this episode coming out at this time in our world since we got it scheduled. But after talking with our friends Michael and Melissa Wear, we believe this conversation is imperative for all of us… no matter our political affiliation. It has been said about Michael Wear, “Even as we find ourselves in a crisis of disillusionment, and even despair, about the state of American politics, Wear reminds us that we must hold fast to the belief that we can change our country and our world for the better. Each of us would do well to adopt at least a bit of Wear's realistic hopefulness.” His wife speaks to the same kind of buoyant, practical hopefulness, which we all need in this season. We can't wait for you to listen in on this one. We're so grateful to be talking about empathy on the podcast this week. We believe the muscle of empathy is one that kids are struggling to develop more than ever before. In this episode, we talk about why and, even more importantly, what we can do about it. Empathy truly is a pre-requisite for healthy relationships. So, let's all work together to help the kids we love grow in their awareness, love, and empathy for those around them, including and maybe even especially those that live under the same roof! . . . . . Are you wondering how to have political conversations with your friends and loved ones without things turning, well... hostile? Election time is here, and the political atmosphere is so divisive that it can feel impossible to have political conversations without things getting heated. So does this mean we just avoid talking about politics altogether?
Carlos Whittaker...you know him and love him and he's a Hall of Funner. We're diving into the project he's been working on the the past few years. If you don't follow Carlos on social media and haven't heard about this, you're going to be fascinated. Carlos spent 7 weeks away from screens and spent time with monks and amish farmers to see how it would impact his life AND his brain. He's written all about it in his brand new book, Reconnected AND he's been working on a documentary of the whole thing. We're going to talk about all of it today. Buckle up! . . . . . Y'all, we really believe this episode is a MUST LISTEN. On a 1 to 10 scale when it comes to emotions, we're seeing more kids who are living at 10 than ever before. They're using big words. You've heard us say it…rather than sad, they're saying “I'm depressed.” Rather than worried or stressed, they're saying “I have anxiety.” When they get the very most upset, they say “I want to kill myself!” And we're left wondering—and panicking—that it really might be true. We have GOT to help kids find their way not only to accurate words to describe their emotion but to the FOUNDATIONAL milestone of perspective. In other words, we know, as adults, that most of life is about a 3 to a 7 on a scale and we have to help kids find their way to the 3's and the 7's, so we really do know the 10's are happening. Plus, that kind of perspective is crucial to healthy relationships, workplaces…just healthy life, in general. So, we really do believe this conversation is deeply important. Share it with your friends, with your spouse, on your stories, in all the spaces. We've got to change things for the kids we love. . . . . . Today we're talking about something we LOVE to dig into around here: unplugging from all of the noise. My friend Hannah Brencher is joining us and her latest book, The Unplugged Hours, comes out in September so we're going to talk about how we do all of this well. We even recorded a little bonus conversation just for Single Purpose League to talk about the nuances of being single, but also needing to disconnect and unplug and how to feel safe and secure when we do that. I think you are going to find this convo really helpful! . . . . Want to watch this episode on YouTube? Head on over to our YouTube Channel and be sure to like and subscribe! . . . . Ever since we started dreaming up the Music City Series, we talked about how much we wanted to interview our friend, Holly Williams Coleman. She is a phenomenally talented artist in her own right as an acclaimed singer/songwriter. She is ALSO a retail entrepreneur and owner of White's Mercantile, with 5 locations. She is ALSO a serial house renovator. She is ALSO married to artist/musician Chris Coleman, mom to four adorable littles. AND she's one of the kindest people we know. (She also happens to be music royalty, which you'll hear more about in the episode.) Holly is hilarious, brilliant, and a true delight to talk with. Y'all, I'm so excited for you to hear this one…especially as we head into Father's Day weekend! One of our favorite friends (and Dads!), Willie Robertson is in the studio talking all about sharing your faith, connecting people to the Bible, and why we love Nashville. Although Willie might be best known as a member of the Duck Dynasty, he is most passionate about his role as a Gospeler. Over the years, he has shared the Good News of Jesus with others and he encourages us to do the same in this brand new book, Gospeler. It's such a helpful resource as we keep stretching and growing in how we share the gospel and talk about our faith. I loved how the book of Acts weaved through this entire conversation! We wish there had been a camera in the car when our amazing friend and publicist Jana Muntsinger emailed to tell us Anne Lamott had said yes to being on our podcast. We lost our minds—literally, you guys. We were both screaming, “Are you kidding me?!” over and over in the car! We still can't believe it. Today we're diving into the book of Acts with Pastor of the Pod, Dr. Kevin Queen. I am so excited for you to hear this conversation and truly SO excited for the month of May over on the Let's Read the Gospels podcast as we read through the book of Acts. There are so many themes within Acts: prayer, the movement of Jesus, a longing for more. WOWZIE ZOWIE I love taking these deep dives into the books of the Bible. So the story goes...we were SUPPOSED to recap 2017 but I just HAD to tell our good buddy, Eddie Kaufholz, about going to Saturday Night Live. I think this might be one of our favorite episodes we've ever done. So here's what you need to know: Eddie started a new company PILLAR (it's awesome!), I went to SNL, and 2017 was a great year. How many of us grew up watching Katie Couric over breakfast before school? We both sure did…and have loved and respected her work ever since. It was an HONOR to have a conversation with her recently about parenting adult children, her books, her work with Stand Up to Cancer, and the fascinating people she has met along the way. What a remarkable career this kind, tenacious, brilliant woman has had. . . . . . I know y'all love this girl as much as I do! My friend, Anne Wilson, is back on the show to talk about her upcoming album Rebel. Y'all. This album...it's so GOOD! You know I love me some good country music! We talk a lot about the complication of being a faith person that makes both Christian and country music. I am just so impressed with Anne and how brave and wise she is. What a gift she is to us! I've been DYING to have my friend Nicole Renard Warren on the show. You may know her as Nicole the Nomad. She is one of my favorite influencers and makes the most DELISH food! Nicole is currently competing on FOX's hit show “Next Level Chef” (with Gordon Ramsay) and is quickly becoming a fan favorite. DUH. I can't wait for y'all to hear our conversation about her experience on the show, saying yes until God closes the door, and what to do when God answers your prayer. We're taking things back to 2015 with our good buddy, Eddie Kaufholz. If you missed the news, each month this year, in honor of our 10th Anniversary of That Sounds Fun Podcast, Eddie and I will be reviewing each year the podcast has existed. We're going to talk about what happened in the world, the top songs and movies, and what happened in our own lives…this is going to be an adventure back to all the things we forgot and all the memories that have stuck with us too. Did we actually recap 2015? Not really. Did we have a fun and wacky conversation as Eddie and I always do?? 100%! Check out our 2014 recap episode. . . . . . Want to watch this episode on YouTube?
