Rob drove down to Fredericksburg, Virginia for some late-season shad fishing. After the shad depart, the striped bass, spotted gar, and northern snakehead make their appearance. After parking at Falmouth Beach, Rob strides across the sand to the primary river channel, where he galavants above and below the Route 1 bridge. This bridge signifies the tidal fall line on the Rappahannock River. Two weeks later, Rob asks Misty to join him for more escapades. Will the stunning weather help? Should Rob fish a single fly or tandem rig? These are the waters Rob fished during his college years in Fredericksburg in the late 1990s. Misty remarks that there are no elephants or tigers for Rob to be concerned about. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Despite centuries of colonialism, Indigenous peoples still occupy parts of their ancestral homelands in what is now Eastern North Carolina--a patchwork quilt of forested swamps, sandy plains, and blackwater streams that spreads across the Coastal Plain between the Fall Line and the Atlantic Ocean. In these backwaters, Lumbees and other American Indians have adapted to a radically transformed world while maintaining vibrant cultures and powerful connections to land and water. This reality is paralleled in Indigenous communities worldwide as Indigenous people continue to assert their rights to self-determination by resisting legacies of colonialism and the continued transformation of their homelands through pollution, unsustainable development, and climate change. In On the Swamp: Fighting for Indigenous Environmental Justice (UNC Press, 2024), environmental scientist Ryan Emanuel, a member of the Lumbee tribe, shares stories from North Carolina about Indigenous survival and resilience in the face of radical environmental changes. Addressing issues from the loss of wetlands to the arrival of gas pipelines, these stories connect the dots between historic patterns of Indigenous oppression and present-day efforts to promote environmental justice and Indigenous rights on the swamp. Emanuel's scientific insight and deeply personal connections to his home blend together in a book that is both a heartfelt and an analytical call to acknowledge and protect sacred places. "Lay Them to Rest" with author Laurah Norton Join the Morbidly Curious Book Club Today: themorbidlycuriousbookclub.com “This had been the thing that bothered me most from day one: Doe cases got the least coverage, even though they were the ones that needed it most. So, I filed a fresh batch of FOIAs on the unidentified dead, the ones whose case numbers I'd been tracking in NamUs and whose nicknames were set to Google Alerts: Julie Doe. Dennis Doe. Christmas Doe. When I got the very first file, I knew these were the cases I needed to write about, above all. There was no one out there advocating for them. No family holding a memorial for Jane Doe 1980. Or if there were, it was under a different name. But maybe their attention could be attracted and connected to the unidentified. After all, if you can construct a story with the pieces that death has left behind, someone might recognize the life that preceded them.” Welcome to the Morbidly Curious Book Club's Podcast! In this episode, we are discussing our February 2024 book pick, “LAY THEM TO REST: On the Road with the Cold Case Investigators Who Identify the Nameless” by Laurah Norton. About: A fascinating deep dive into the dark world of forensic science as experts team up to solve the identity of an unknown woman named “Ina Jane Doe,” exploring the rapidly evolving techniques scientists are using to break the most notorious cold cases, written by the host of the popular true-crime podcast, The Fall Line and One Strange Thing by Laurah Norton. Over the past six years, Laurah has worked tirelessly to cover unsolved murders, unidentified persons, and unexplained disappearances—-primarily those involving communities deprioritized by mainstream media or investigators. After she stumbled across the case of "Ina Jane Doe,” an unidentified woman whose decapitated head was found tucked in the brush of an Illinois park in 1993, Laurah has been more determined than ever to help this victim reclaim her identity so she can finally be laid to rest. Laurah Norton is a writer and former academic with 15 years in the fields of literary fiction, creative nonfiction, and archival and primary research. Her work includes creation, writing, research, and hosting of podcasts ONE STRANGE THING and THE FALL LINE. Current literary projects include the book LAY THEM TO REST, and she is currently working on a suspense-thriller novel set in the early 2000s and tying together the Appalachian foothills of Georgia, folk magic, and forensic science. Other literary publications include fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction in journals and anthologies. Join Hal Herring and Mississippi State University environmental history professor and author of My Work is that of Conservation, An Environmental Biography of George Washington Carver Mark Hersey for a fantastic American conservation story that has never been more relevant than it is right now. If you finished seventh grade in an American public school, you learned about George Washington Carver, who was born into slavery in Missouri and grew up to be one of America's leading scientists and agronomists, working from his laboratory at Tuskegee University in Alabama. Carver was a friend and advisor to U.S. presidents, including Theodore Roosevelt, and sought out as counsel by some of the best minds in agriculture across the world. Carver was also one of America's pioneers of the science of ecology and a cutting-edge conservationist who advocated for the restoration of whitetail deer, quail and fisheries, long before such ideas became mainstream. His conservation vision was forged in the fire of his own history and in his life's work in Alabama's post-slavery Black Belt and along the Fall Line, known then as “the most destroyed land in all of the South” -- a place where poverty, injustice and hunger were closely tied to the abuse and collapse of the systems of the earth. Don't miss Hal's fascinating conversation with Mark Hersey.
Henrico County is fully stoked on the Fall Line Trail.
Laurah is sick; apologies for hoarseness. The last five episodes have presented more than 20 cold cases in desperate need of resolution. Laurah is sick; apologies for hoarseness. 1992 - Clarksville, Tennessee. On the evening of December 24, 1992, 25-year-old Susan Lund left her home for ingredients to make a pie. The young mother never returned home. About a month later, female remains were located 300 miles away in Ina, Illinois, but investigators couldn't figure out who she was. 30 years later, the woman known only as Ina Jane Doe was finally identified as Susan Minard Lund. Susan's murder remains unsolved. Laura Norton, host of The Fall Line and One Strange Thing podcast, spent more than a year working with and learning from forensic experts across the country as she collaborated with anthropologists, DNA experts, and investigative genetic genealogists to help identify Susan Lund. Her new book, Lay Them to Rest, takes a fascinating deep dive into the dark world of forensic science, and a personal look at the people behind the scenes working to solve decades old mysteries. Today, Laurah joins me on Murder, She Told for a conversation about what it's like working to reconnect the names of the unidentified, how she approaches cold case and Jane Doe research, and what investigators need from you to help find Susan's killer. But all of the people whose cases are covered in this episode are lost, in that they have been disconnected from their identities, and thus their loved ones—whether they were missing in the months before their deaths, or for much longer. Part two of our series covering the disappearance of Pat Allen Guild, and exploring the investigation into his disappearance. Patrick “Pat” Allen Guild moved to Nashville with dreams of making it big in the songwriting business. But things didn't work out as he planned; he spent his time in the city living in its unhoused community, in an encampment near the I-24 overpass. Pat was last heard from around December of 1991—and since then, there's been no trace of him. Now, his adult daughter, Shannon, is trying to work backward to separate the threads of her father's life, and piece together the bits of information she's discovered to find out what, exactly, happened to her father. It's not a pleasant journey for her; her own mother was afraid of Pat, and for good reason. But more than anything, Shannon need to know—she needs resolution. In March of 1976, a young woman was discovered, with no obvious trauma, in the Harpeth River in Nashville; she carried on her a picture of a little boy, and a trail that led to witnesses who said she'd hitchhiked with a mysterious friend, all the way from Minnesota—but that trail led nowhere. Without the possibility of DNA testing, the best shot of identifying “Sherry” Jane Doe is using her extremely accurate forensic art, and the details she shared of her life—and, perhaps, a daughter that ties her to South Carolina. The Fall Line has commissioned new isolated forensic art of her teeth to share with the public in hopes that this information will aid in identification; you can see this image and all others associated with the case on our website. To submit information, please contact Detective Filter at Metro Nashville Police at 615-862-7803. In March of 1998, a homicide victim was recovered from Nashville's Cumberland River, with nothing to indicate who she might be, and the best clue to her identity a “Leo” astrological charm; now, investigative genetic genealogy is the best path toward her name, but the trail has stopped short in an Alabama county, and investigators are seeking your help. The Fall Line is releasing new information in “Leo” Jane Doe's case; you can view the images we mention on our social media accounts. To submit information or contact MNPD about uploading your DNA, please contact Detective Filter at Metro Nashville Police at 615-862-7803.
