Originally uploaded November 7th, re-edited Dec. 2nd. Chris Holman welcomes Reyna Masko, Founder and CEO of Aurora International Foods, Aurora International Foods , Grand Haven, MI. PRODUCT: Reyna's Michelada Mix TOPIC: Reyna's Michelada Mix is now available at 46 new Meijer stores across Metro Detroit per Meijer's "Local Favorites" program. Their discussion covered several things including; What's the story behind your company, Aurora International Foods? Why did you choose Reyna's Michelada Mix as your first product? What does this expanded product reach mean for your company? You were recently selected as Start Garden's top ten recipient, awarding you $20k toward your business. How has that impacted operations? What do you hope to come out of this expansion/partnership with Meijer? Women-led startup selected for ”Local Favorites” program. GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., October 30, 2024 – Aurora International Foods, creator of high-quality, all-natural products at the intersection of Latin American flavors, culture, and convenience, today announced its Reyna's Michelada Mix will be on shelves at 46 Meijer stores across Metro Detroit. The original flavor of Reyna's Michelada Mix will be available at these new locations beginning this month. Through the new “Local Favorites” program, Meijer brings small, local businesses to the forefront, or in this case, the aisle endcap! Reyna's Michelada Mix, the creation of Reyna Oréllana Masko, an immigrant from El Salvador, was selected to join several other culturally significant local businesses in this initiative. “My mother, Aurora, and my work within the Hispanic communities have taught me the power that food has to bring people together,” said Reyna Oréllana Masko, owner and CEO of Aurora International Foods. “This opportunity allows me to reach an expanded audience from our base in Grand Haven, and draw people into the enchantment of Latin American flavors. It's an honor to be on the shelves alongside other Michigan-based food businesses this holiday season.” The original flavor of Reyna's Michelada Mix will be available at 46 Meijer stores in Southeast Michigan beginning this month. Partnering with local and national suppliers, both large and small, allows the retailer to have a broad product offering that meets customers' needs. “I admire the commitment to inclusion at Meijer, and how hard they work to make their stores reflect the communities they serve, urging customers to see themselves, their friends, their family, and their neighbors represented on shelves,” added Masko. Visit auroraintlfoods.com/products/ for more information on store locations in Metro Detroit. About Reyna's Michelada Mix Reyna's Michelada Mix is a high-quality, tomato-based blend of all-natural ingredients that takes the work out of mixing different ingredients (you just add your favorite light beer!) while creating an explosion of flavors for your tastebuds to explore. The recipe cultivates ties between local community and culture as it was created from Reyna's passion for food and drink, people, and Hispanic heritage. Available in the original and mango flavors, Reyna's Michelada Mix is the intersection of world flavors, culture, and convenience, and can be found in Meijer stores across Michigan. On this episode of Behind the Mitten, Gonzo and Amy visit marvelous Muskegon, a historic city nestled on the shores of lady Lake Michigan that offers different types of adventures for everyone, including some with a decidedly Gaelic twist to them.We start the show off by highlighting the Michigan Irish Music Festival, which is happening this September 12 through the 15th at Heritage Landing in downtown Muskegon. Celebrating 25 years, this is the premier Irish music festival for the entire mid-west, drawing incredible international musical acts, artistic performers, arts and crafts, Irish dancing, and tastes of the "old country". We have on Kris Vanderstelt, Vice President, and volunteer coordinator for the fest to share what's new for 2024, what not to miss, and insider tips on how to make the most of your festival experience. Tickets are on sale now, and we highly recommend you plan ahead for this very popular event.Speaking of volunteers, it takes a lot of them to make the festival run smoothly, so if you are interested in helping out, please contact our next guest. Jim Rudicil, the Executive Director of the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park is also in charge of parking volunteers for the Michigan Irish fest, which is truly a community endeavor. He'll also share all the amazing things you can do at the Luge park, which is located inside Muskegon State Park. This fall they'll be hosting "HIke the Lights" where you can walk Michigan's longest-lit hiking trail right along the shore, and get up close and personal with the dunes. Plus, did you know you can do a dual zip line here? True story. The Muskegon Museum of Art, founded in 1912, is known throughout the Midwest as having one fine collection, and we think its stellar reputation is about to get even better if that's possible. Kirk Hallman, Director, shares with us the exciting news about their $15 million expansion that is set to open in February 2025. The Muskegon community has been working on this since 2018, and the addition will feature a huge new gallery which will allow the museum to bring in bigger shows and exhibitions for all to enjoy. Lashelle Mikesell, Digital Media and Marketing Coordinator for Visit Muskegon then stops by to share other fall activities to enjoy in this neck of the woods. She recommends catching the end of a few art exhibits at the museum, including a quilt exhibit that is ending at the of September, and a jewelry exhibit that is showing through the end of 2024. For fall, Muskegon is awash in fun festivals, find a complete listing of events in the area here. Lashelle recommends the self-guided leaf peeping tour you can follow called "Depot to Depot". The route takes you from Muskegon South Pierhead Light to the White River Light Station in Whitehall. Four detectives stood in the rain, wearing their suits and ties. It was late September 2002 in Grand Haven, Michigan, and the gray skies matched their somber mood.  They'd just arrived at a cemetery near the shores of Lake Michigan.  It was time to bury the body of a victim they'd spent the past four months trying to avenge. But so far, it had all been in vain.  The detectives watched as the Minister conducted the service with no family, relatives or friends present. Because absolutely no one knew who the victim was. This weekend takes us ABOVE the mitten, as we travel across the Mighty Mac and head to one of our favorite places in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Sault Ste Marie."Where Michigan history was born" is an apt tagline for this city that resides along the St. Mary's River, as it was founded way back in 1668 by one of Michigan's favorite explorers, Fr. Jacques Marquette. Today, the "Soo" is best known for their famous locks, which transport some of the biggest freighters in all the land between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Our good friend Linda Hoath from the Sault Ste Marie Visitor's Bureau kicks off the show, and as one of our regular guests, you know we'll have a great time. Linda shares a little about what makes this community so special, she is a life-long resident, and a true advocate for all that this area has to offer. Linda also gives us an update on the incredibly large construction project that is underway, as they transform two of the older, smaller locks into one gigantic one that can handle larger boats. It's quite an engineering marvel. To get a great view of this project, we recommend a trip to the top, 210 feet up in the air, at the Tower of History. We stopped by for the very first time and while we were very impressed by that panoramic view, we were even more impressed with the curator, Paul Sabourin. Sometimes you get very lucky and walk into an interview and strike absolute gold, which is exactly what happened when we met Paul. A passionate storyteller, this man regaled us with stories in three languages: English, French and Ojibway. Now that I'm thinking about it, he might have also told a joke in German at one point. Head to the Tower to learn more about the Native Americans in this area and the settlers that came later, meet Mr. Paul himself and check out that absolutely incredible view.In order to see the locks in action,  you just have to do a boat tour, and our friends at the Original Soo Locks Boat Tours are some of the best. Celebrating 90 years of being on the water, the Original Tours are open every day of the summer. Shiela Marchand joins us, she is currently the business manager for the company, but she started off at the ticket counter when she was in college. Best part of her job is giving tours, she loves that they do live narration on each and every tour, so you can ask all the important questions you have about the locks. The Original Soo tour is a must do when in da Soo.Finally, we catch up with our good friends Ken and Wilda Hopper, who own the uber-popular Bird's Eye Outfitters. If an adventure is what you are looking for in the Soo, Bird's Eye is where you want to go. They can help you plan a mountain bike trip, a fantastic hike, a paddling adventure, or even a trip in a kayak right through the locks. These guys, and girls, are absolute experts, so they'll make sure you have not just the right gear and equipment, but also that you'll have a great time. This is also THE spot for coffee and a bit of nosh in the morning, or for a beer and a sandwich at lunch. Always bustling, Bird's Eye is one of our favorite spots to stop in the Soo.Affiliates:*8 a.m. Saturdays on WBRN - 1460 AM and 107.7 FM in Big Rapids*8 a.m. Saturdays on Kalamazoo Talk Radio 1360 WKMI*8 a.m. Saturdays on WILS-1320 AM in Lansing* 9 a.m. Saturdays on 92.1 Grand Haven's Favorite, WGHN-FM*10 a.m. Saturdays 95.3 WBCK-FM in Battle Creek*10 a.m. Saturdays on News/Talk/Sports 94.9 WSJM in Benton Harbor*4 p.m. Saturdays on WIOS "The Bay's Best!" - 1480 AM & 106.9 FM in Tawas / East Tawas*7 a.m. Sundays on the following Black Diamond Broadcasting stations:-WCFX - CFX Today's Hits (95.3) in Mt. "The Barbie Project" was an idea conjured out of a tough time by our friend and radio legend Mary Ellen Murphy, who hosts "Good Morning Grand Haven" on WGHN 92.1 each day. She recently announced her new campaign to bring a Coast Guard Barbie to life, and we just had to have her on to tell us all about it.Mary Ellen was undergoing treatment for breast cancer, and this kind of stunk for all the usual reasons. During breaks between her treatments in Grand Rapids, she would head to Goodwill for a little thrifting therapy. One day, she found a pretty nice Barbie Beach Dream House and decided to get it and fix it up for her granddaughters. The Barbie Project was born. This year, in honor of the 100th anniversary of the National Coast Guard Festival and the fact that Grand Haven is "Coast Guard City USA", Mary Ellen has started a campaign for a Coast Guard Barbie. Barbie currently serves in every arm of the military EXCEPT the Coast Guard, which seems like a major oversight. While women make a smaller minority serving in the Coast Guard, making up about 15 percent of service members, you best believe they are an integral part of the service. In fact, the top person at the Coast Guard is a woman. Admiral Linda L. Fagan assumed duties as the 27th Commandant of the United States Coast Guard in 2022, and now oversees all global Coast Guard operations and 42,000 active-duty, 7,000 reserve, and 8,700 civilian personnel, as well as 21,000 GC Auxillary volunteers.Vote for Coast Guard Barbie here!Attempts have been made to contact Barbie toy maker Mattel to no avail, but don't worry, Mary Ellen is not giving up. She's gearing up for a big push for votes over the next few weeks since the National Coast Guard Festival runs from July 26 to August 4. It's a fantastic event, and this year it'll be bigger and better than ever. If you go, be sure to look for Mary Ellen and the beach house out on the actual beach. She brings it down and sets it up for everyone to enjoy while taking in all the sun and fun this great Michigan beach town has to offer.

The attorney general said this pending program, “is a redistribution of wealth from cultural elites who decided to go to college and take out loans.” Attorney General Bailey went on to say Biden's new plan is ‘unconstitutional and illegal' and that he's going to put a stop to it again, going as far as saying he will, “hold them in contempt of court if [the Biden Administration] won't obey the lawful orders of the United States Supreme Court.” General Bailey also gives an update on other important court cases like Murthy v. Missouri (formerly Missouri v. Biden), as well as on his suit filed against Media Matters. Later, Amanda Head talks with William Trachman about how the push for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within educational institutions has potentially ruined community farming at the University of California at Berkeley. The former Trump-appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Office for Civil Rights for the Department of Education, now, General Counsel for Mountain States Legal Foundation talks about the importance of his complaint against the school, and why, “all public institutions, including universities, respect the equal dignity and rights of all Americans, regardless of skin color or any other protected class.” Finally, Amanda dives into the world of campaign politics with a Republican Congressional candidate running in a targeted U.S. House race in the battleground state of Michigan. Michael Markey Jr. of Grand Haven bills himself as a “disrupter, father, and entrepreneur.” He and Amanda dive into the importance of securing our border and ensuring no American has to live through what Laken Riley and Ruby Garcia's families had to.
