“When we shift the lens and start to look at [behaviors] as the signal rather than the target . . . we get so many more answers, and we really start to build connection and relationships.” Dr. Mona Delahooke Encompass is honored to have Pediatric Psychologist Dr. Mona Delahooke on our Parent Talks podcast. As a speaker, trainer, and consultant, Dr. Delahooke has dedicated her career to promoting compassionate, relationship-based neurodevelopmental interventions for children with developmental, behavioral, emotional, and learning differences. As a mom of special needs children, Savannah wanted to be the best advocate for them that she could be. She thought she was doing her research when she came upon a Special Needs advocate and educator who promised just that. Throughout her experience she started to notice some red flags; unnecessary conflict, tensions and a seemingly endless fight for what kinda looked like justice. But for who? From one of my most favorite books, Beyond Behaviors, is a quote today from Dr. Mona Delahooke.
When our kids are feeling upset, many of us have been told that we need to teach our kids how to self-regulate on their own. But if we take a long hard look into neurodevelopment and how that affects our body and behaviors, and our kids' bodies and behaviors, you can see that kids can't always regulate themselves. But how do we help them learn to self-regulate then? In this episode, we speak with Dr. Mona Delahook, a Child Psychologist and author of Beyond Behaviors as well as her newest book, Brain-Body Parenting: How to Stop Managing Behavior and Start Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids. She's a mom to 3 grown kids ranging from 26-34, and is trying to shift the lens and change the paradigm of how our world views challenging behaviors! We talk about how others can experience certain situations in a different way than others, how we can help our kids by using co-regulation, and what can we do as parents to nurture and build our kids' ability to self-regulate.Resources We Shared:Calm & Happy Parenting Time to get your kids to listen and help out more without the fighting! In this episode, Julie and Ginger invite Dr. Mona Delahooke into the studio. Dr. Delahooke discusses how to raise joyful and resilient children – and isn't that the goal of us all! She is the author of three books, Social and Emotional Development, Beyond Behaviors, and Brain-Body Parenting, which was recently released. Mona says that we must remember, “We are never just a brain - our bodies instruct our brain.” So, what does that mean? How do our bodies instruct our brain? It is all about body budgeting! Everything that happens to us is either a withdrawal or a deposit into or out of our nervous system. We need to be conscious of the body budgeting of ourselves and our children. But remember - Its very individualized. There is no one way. Just know - no one can pour from an empty cup! In today's episode, we are joined by Dr. Mona Delahooke, Ph.D. child psychologist to discuss reframing how you understand your child's behavior – with curiosity and compassion. Learn why Dr. Delahooke believes self-compassion and co-regulation is the proper response to a child's tantrum. We discuss the loneliness of being a mother and how we can be mindful of the feelings, but not judgemental of them. Tune in to learn about interoception, prediction error, and challenge zones and how they play into dealing with children's behavior. Dr. Delahooke dives into what the term Body Budget means and how to keep it balanced. She urges us to replace trauma-informed care by trauma-responsive care – pay attention to the nervous system of every child and caregiver to ensure that we have healthy, regulated homes. To learn more about Dr. Mona Delahooke check out her website: https://monadelahooke.com/ and The Brain-Body Parenting CollectiveYou can join her on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/monadelahooke/ or Facebook https://www.facebook.com/DrMonaDelahooke Read Mona's books:Beyond Behaviors: https://www.amazon.ca/Beyond-Behaviors-Compassion-Understand-Behavioral/dp/1683731190/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= Brain-Body Parenting: https://www.amazon.ca/Brain-Body-Parenting-Managing-Behavior-Resilient/dp/0063061317/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=Thank you to our supporter the Tanenbaum Open Science Institute at The Neuro. Part of motherhood is finding the best ways to help your children manage, deal and overcome hard things. It can seem overwhelming and, sometimes, impossible to help your children bob and weave through difficulty and stress. We sat down with Mary Engle, LPC, a child counselor who focuses on play therapy in an adorable house in Katy, to learn about how validating your children and their feelings can be an incredible first step toward building coping little people. She recommended a few books to The Cold Coffee Club that could be useful and are definitely worth checking out: The Power of Validation, The Whole Brain Child, The Unwritten Rules of Friendship, and Beyond Behaviors. And one powerful word of advice from Mary as we all work hard at raising our kiddos: Evaluate how your own upbringing is influencing your parenting style. Join us to learn more for this brilliantly loving counselor about how to lovingly mother our children!

Episode 34 with child psychologist Mona Delahooke was posted a year ago and remains our top episode on the show. No wonder - Mona's straightforward explanation of why children behave the way they do really resonated with so many listeners. Based on concepts from her book Beyond Behaviors, Mona gives us practical advice on how to address challenging behaviours. She explains why what we see is just the "tip of the iceberg" and why certain approaches to managing challenging behaviours work better than others. Drawing on concepts of the Polyvagal Theory she reframes how we need to understand behaviour so that we can parent more effectively.
The diagnosis or label of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) can feel like a heavy weight for parents and kids. Parenting defiant children can be one of the most challenging experiences parents can face. Dr. Mona Delahooke, pediatric psychologist shares her knowledge and wisdom with us in this episode. One of the most powerful tools Dr. Delahooke shares with us and with her clients she works with is a lens shift about behaviors. Looking beyond the behaviors to the possible root causes behind them is key to understanding our kids. Things such as sensory issues, anxiety, an overly heightened and sensitive nervous system are possible reasons why some children/teens seem to flip a switch and become defiant and/or explosive. Dr. Delahooke suggests to parents to be extremely self compassionate and recognize what a good job they are doing. None of this is your fault and showing compassion and learning to work through our own triggers and struggles is key to staying calm with our kids. In this episode, Beth talks with learning disabilities specialist Jill Stowell from Stowell Learning Center. She talks about how early childhood affects a person's ability to learn, and she gives great ideas to parents that will help them advocate for their child and find solutions for their learning challenges. ===============
Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) was among the earliest pioneers in humanistic psychology (sometimes referred to as growth psychology or third wave psychology). This movement begin to emerge in the 1950's in response to the idea that humans were merely creatures driven by their subconscious (Sigmund Freud and the psychoanalytic model), or were organisms conditioned to respond to internal and external stimuli (B.F. Skinner and the behaviorist model). Instead, Maslow (as well as Carl Rogers Erik Erikson and Maria Montessori) saw humans as having a natural impulse toward fullness, health, healing, and growth (Maslow, 1968). The three psychological concepts for which Maslow is most highly identified are: (a) hierarchical structure of motivation, (b) self-actualization, and (c) peak experiences. This podcast address his theory of motivation

In this chat I talk to Mona Delahooke about the Polyvagal theory and ways to help children when they shut down or when they are in a fight or flight state. I speak to Dr. Mona about her book "Beyond Behaviors" that shifted the way I looked at parenting looking at behaviors as the tip of the iceberg and focusing on developing meaningful relationships. As parents we need to pay attention to the important signals that we should address by seeking to understand a child's individual differences in the context of relational safety. We also speak about DIR FloorTime and about bottom up and top down approaches and why there is no such thing as "Good" or Bad" behavior. Dr. Delahooke is a member of the American Psychological Association and holds the highest level of endorsement in the field of infant and toddler mental health in California, as a Reflective Practice Mentor (RPM). She is a frequent speaker, trainer, and consultant to parents, organizations, schools, and public agencies. Dr. Delahooke has dedicated her career to promoting compassionate, relationship-based, neurodevelopmental interventions for children with developmental, behavioral, emotional, and learning differences.
Dr. Mona Delahooke, child psychologist and best selling author shares her expertise on the core reasons behind some of the most challenging behaviors our kids exhibit. Why do tantrums, defiance, back talk and disrespect happen? Dr. Delahooke in her research has found that most difficult behaviors happen when a child's nervous system is immature and signals to the child they are unsafe. She talks about the often diagnosed disorder ODD (oppositional defiance disorder) and deconstructs it into a child or teen feeling unsafe and threatened. This is a powerful episode for parents or educators to listen to and learn from. It has the potential for a big perspective shift in our parenting and attitudes towards our kids behaviors Dr. Mona Delahooke website Get the Beyond Behaviors book

In this episode, we go through Chapter 5 of Dr. Mona Delahooke's "Beyond Behaviors." We cover early dysregulation issues that appear to resolve (but don't), difficulties with sleep, and understanding the specifics of our children's sensory systems. With this knowledge, we can continue to help their brains feel safe, putting them in a place to connect and learn.
In this episode, we go through Chapter 4of “Beyond Behaviors”, understanding that a child’s safety must be the adult’s priority if we are to effectively address challenging behaviors. In addition to thinking about how our child responds when under stress, we must also look at how our own bodies and brains respond when triggered, leading us to build our own set of coping skills. Once we can do this, we can begin the process of co-emotional regulation.
Special guest: Mona Delahooke, PhD. A kindergartener whose father pinches her on the arm at night- once for every time her teacher wrote the girl's name on the behavior chart at school that day. A three year old in foster care who was found sitting in a car by the side of the road with his mother, who was passed out at the wheel. His daycare-center teacher sends him to a time out room for challenging behaviors. A ten year old is diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder. His teachers say he is chronically disruptive, always seeking attention, His problematic behaviors began after his family relocated to a new state. My next guest says that we are too quick to look at behaviors as attempts to annoy and disrupt—rather than what they truly represent- observable responses to our internal and external experiences. And here's the problem with that- When we fail to recognize that many behaviors represent the body's response to stress, not intentional misbehavior, we expend effort on techniques designed to help children logically connect their thoughts, emotions and behaviors and change them—when they simply can't yet. Instead, we need to see the behavior that is problematic and confusing and NOT ask ourselves how do we get rid of it? But rather, what is this telling us about the child? The answer will then guide us to coming up with the best approach to help that individual child thrive. Mona Delahooke, Ph.D. is a clinical child psychologist with a passion for supporting families and children. She has worked widely with multidisciplinary teams in the areas of trauma, developmental and emotional differences for 25 years. She is a senior faculty member of the Profectum Foundation and is a trainer and consultant to schools and agencies including the Los Angeles Department of Mental Health. The answer will then guide us to coming up with the best approach to help that individual child thrive.
