Balancing personal needs with the demands of motherhood can be incredibly challenging. It's common to prioritize your children's needs, but it's also important to care for yourself to avoid burnout. Finding small moments for self-care and setting boundaries can help maintain your well-being. Remember, taking care of yourself ultimately benefits your entire family by allowing you to be more present and fulfilled. Heather Chauvin is the author of the book "Dying to be a Good Mother" and the podcast "Emotionally Uncomfortable." As a mother of three boys, Heather has navigated the challenges of balancing personal needs with the demands of parenting. Today, Heather discusses the importance of self-care, setting boundaries, and redefining societal expectations in order to thrive as a mother and individual. Join in as young leaders pose inquiries about life, personal development, and beyond! Quotes: “The fuller we are, the better we can lead from a healthier place, advocating for our children, ourselves, and everything else.” – Heather Chauvin “Balance is BS. I'm all about alignment, which is why thriving is essential, not optional.” – Heather Chauvin “Thriving is a privilege and a birthright, accessible to all. The belief that fulfilling your desires is selfish, especially for women raising children, needs to be rewritten.” – Heather Chauvin Takeaways: Implement the "Wouldn't it be nice if..." journaling exercise to identify personal desires and the feelings behind them. Practice setting boundaries and communicating needs to family members, even if it feels uncomfortable at first. Reflect on the areas of your life that need more attention and focus on reverse engineering how you want to feel, rather than just checking boxes. Conclusion: Prioritizing personal well-being and self-care is essential amidst the demands of motherhood. Taking time to care for oneself not only benefits a mother's mental and physical health but also enhances her ability to care for her family. By finding balance and recognizing the value of self-care, mothers can navigate the challenges of parenting with more energy, patience, and resilience. Ultimately, caring for oneself creates a positive ripple effect that strengthens both personal well-being and family dynamics.

Most people think profit is all about money. They work tirelessly, sacrificing their time, energy, and well-being, only to find themselves burnt out and unfulfilled. Society has conditioned us to believe that just having enough is acceptable, but this mindset keeps us trapped in survival mode. Have you ever asked yourself why you never seem to have enough time, energy, or emotional freedom? The truth is, you're probably stuck in a cycle of just getting by. You might think, “If I just work a little harder, I'll achieve financial freedom.” But even with more money, the exhaustion and emotional drain continue. It feels like there's no way out. In this episode, Heather Chauvin returns. As a business owner who defines profit in a way that goes beyond just financial gains, she shares how to align your actions with your desires and truly thrive. “Profit is not just about money but it's about time freedom and emotional freedom.” -Heather Chauvin 3 Things You'll Learn in This Episode -Profit Is More Than Just Money Profit isn't just about making money but it also means having more time and feeling good. Have you ever thought about how having more time and energy can make you feel richer? -Stop Just Getting By Many people think they only deserve just enough to get by, but this keeps them stuck and tired. What if you could feel happy and have more than just enough? -Match Your Actions With What You Want To really change, you need to do things that match what you want in life. Send us a Text Message.Welcome to the show today, and I am so glad you're here. I want to start today by sharing something that my friend Amy sent to me yesterday. This is a meme entitled "How to be a mom in 2017. "We could actually change that to "2024" because it still applies to us today.Make sure your children's academic, emotional, psychological, mental, spiritual, physical, nutritional and social needs are met. While being careful not to overstimulate, under-stimulate, and properly medicate, helicopter, or neglect them in a screen-free processed foods-free, GMO-free, negative energy-free, plastic-free body positive, socially conscious, egalitarian but also authoritative, nurturing, but fostering independence. Gentle but not overly permissive, pesticide-free, two-story multilingual home preferably in a cul de sac, with a backyard and 1.5 siblings spaced at least two years apart for proper development. Also, don't forget the coconut oil. Then, it goes on to say, "How to be a mom in literally every generation before ours. Feed them sometimes."Oh my gosh, we were having a huge conversation about how we can feel so exhausted that we can feel like we've lost ourselves as moms or feel like we're constantly abandoning our own needs. If you are relating to this, you're going to love my special guest today Heather Chauvin. Heather has been named the next-generation thought leader in parenting and women's leadership. She's the author of Dying to Be a Good Mother and the podcast host of Emotionally Uncomfortable, and Heather's work supports women to manage their energy and time so they don't have to sacrifice their impact at work or at home with their kids. And her mission is to crack women open to their deepest potential and lead the life their soul craves. Today's episode is a conversation with one of my mentors, Heather Chauvin, and fellow coach Kristi Simons. In this episode we talk about: · Learning how to understand your child or teen's feelings and actions, so you can respond thoughtfully instead of reacting quickly. · Discover ways to handle your own intense feelings and build a stronger connection with your child/teen. · Learn strategies for effective communication in co-parenting, especially when both parents have different parenting styles. I'm happy to share a rich conversation with strategic parenting coach Heather Chauvin about the plight many mothers of neurodivergent kids find themselves in — prioritizing everyone else's needs over their own and why it's so critical that we get out of this pattern. This is a deeply personal topic for Heather. The way she describes it, by living in survival mode as a parent to her three kids, she was robbing herself of joy, robbing her kids of joy by not being a present parent, and robbing her loved ones of fulfilling relationships. And then in 2013, the universe got her attention when Heather was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Going through that unexpected journey pushed Heather to take a deeper stand for change and explore how cultural expectations sabotage our dreams. I wanted to bring Heather on the show for this conversation because I hear from so many mothers who are in various states of struggle in their parenting lives — pouring everything into their kids, running on fumes, sacrificing so much, putting incredible pressure on ourselves to do it all and do it well. Yet, as much as we love our kids and want to be their safe place, we can't do that unless we are being that for ourselves first. During this conversation, we talked about what dying to be a good mother syndrome is and why so many mothers suffer from it, why trusting yourself can be the best ally in parenting, and how to approach choosing yourself when you think you don't have time. Even though this episode is framed for mothers, it's a good listen for anyone who is a caregiver, especially if you've been feeling like your energy is low or frantic, and that has become the norm. About Heather Chauvin Heather Chauvin is a leadership coach who helps ‘successful' women courageously and authentically live, work, and parent on their own terms. Heather started her career as a social worker helping adults understand children's behavior. But it wasn't until 2013 when a stage 4 cancer diagnosis pushed her to take a deeper stand for change, uncovering how cultural expectations sabotage our dreams. She has been featured in Forbes, Entrepreneur, Real Simple Magazine, Mind Body Green, Google, and more. When Heather isn't working, you will find her living out what she teaches which may include kayaking Alaska, snowboarding, hiking, or anything else that challenges what she believes is possible for herself (and inviting her children along the journey). Becoming a good mother starts with healing yourself and becoming the type of person you needed when you were a child. My guest, Heather Chauvin, joins me to discuss the reality of emotionally vulnerable parenting. From the understanding that you are your child's guide through life to creating your emotional state, being a good mother is a conscious choice we all make daily. How to Become the Creator of Your Emotional State Write your ‘Wouldn't it be nice?' list and keep adding to it. What's the feeling you're after? What will allow you to feel what you want to feel? Life is full of opportunities. It's time to feel alive. Reparenting Yourself Our children are incredible beings. They change who we are, and they show us who we need to be. We can learn so much from our children, and they learn from us – the strategies and tools to grow into healthy, functional adults. But what happens when mothers don't have the role models they need as children? Heather says that this is where healing comes in. It's important for mothers to heal themselves and, even more than that, to become the type of person they needed when they were younger. Emotionally Vulnerable Parenting You are the creator of your own emotional state. Heather recommends a journal prompt that starts with, ‘Wouldn't it be nice if…' to help you understand how to create your own emotional state. Heather says that if you reverse engineer how you want to feel, you get back into alignment with yourself – and then everything starts falling back into place. When we can be more emotionally vulnerable with ourselves, we can show up better for our children. Emotional vulnerability is not just sharing your worries and feeling uneasy. Emotional vulnerability is having the courage to feel good. Take some time to work on the journal prompt, “Wouldn't it be nice if…” Put a timer on this and just write from your heart. Get into your life. How do you want to feel? What steps do you need to take to get there? Let me know in the comments on the episode page how this exercise went for you. KEY TAKEAWAYS: ● Self sabotage is when you are living reactively and not proactively. When you are out of alignment with how you want to feel. All humans experience self sabotage throughout their life when they are experiencing something uncomfortable or avoiding uncomfortable or unfamiliar feelings. ● To reverse engineer the way you want to feel, you have to lean into a feeling, to name the things you are feeling, then make a list of the things that you actually need to do to change that. Physically put the action into place, then start working on the mental shift. Show up as the feeling that you want to feel, and then reflect in the areas that you are not feeling the desired feelings and decide what else you need to change.● Being committed doesn't mean this one thing at the expense of all other things or your compassion for yourself. It doesn't mean perfection. The more you are consistent, the less shame and self sabotage you'll feel and the more likely you'll be able to change your habits/life.QUOTES: “When people were ‘suck it up buttercup, life sucks, motherhood sucks, you know this is it, motherhood sucks'. And I was like yeah I know this “sucks” but does it have to?” - Heather Chauvin“I had to learn how to reverse engineer how I wanted to feel in all areas of my life, and I always say I believe cancer saved my life.” - Heather Chauvin“If you are curious, you will always say ‘I know what I need to do but I'm not doing it'. If you are committed to getting rid of your pain, you will say ‘I'm willing to learn and to lean into what that emotional resistance is'.” - Heather Chauvin “I don't think people consider themselves perfectionists until they try to change.” - Heather Chauvin “Perfection is a coping strategy. It is not an identity of ‘I am a perfectionist'. That is a way that you cope to avoid feeling your feelings.” - Heather Chauvin “What's in our cup? What does life do to us? It triggers us and everything that's in our cup comes up and out. And if self punishment is in that cup, self hatred, that ‘I'm not good enough', the way that we talk to ourselves, is in that cup and you trigger it, the second you're trying to push and birth a new version of yourself, everything that is no longer serving you is going to come up and out. I call that an emotional poop. That emotional poop that's going to come up and out, that is the emotionally uncomfortable stuff. That's where we need to kind of detox our emotions and be like, ‘okay, perfectionism is going to get a little bit bigger before it is leaving my identity, before that's leaving my body and my mind and how I cope and how I make decisions and how I do the things.” - Heather Chauvin “You are your best coach. You know...” - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGUEST RESOURCESHeather Chauvin Free GiftsHeather Chauvin's InstagramHeather Chauvin's PodcastEnergetic Time Management Habit ChallengeGUEST BIO:Heather Chauvin is a leadership coach who helps ‘successful' women courageously and authentically live, work, and parent on their own terms.Heather started her career as a social worker helping adults understand children's behavior. Sometimes when I have something really daunting on my to-do list I find myself caught in the cycle of self-sabotage. If you've ever felt that way you know it's full of blame and shame, and doesn't usually help us accomplish what we need to. Heather is a former social worker, mother, podcaster and coach here to teach us what this behavior is, why it's normal, and what to do about it. In those moments where you want to put off the hard things, you have to realize that what you're really putting off is you. When we create unreachable standards, when we put on the armor of perfectionism, we start to obsess over things that don't align with who we really are. Instead, we have to get used to the messiness of growth, because it means that things are actually moving and changing around us in ways that are more important than having a false sense of control. When you listen to this conversation you'll see how self-sabotage can actually be your friend, instead of something you fight.'
