Educators, it's time to shift our mindset by understanding what polyvagal theory, the importance of brain-body connection, and how we can better support our children. We all know that the fields of psychology and education still haven't fully integrated the wisdom we're learning from research and neuroscience, and often rely on methods that seek to alter kids behavior through rewards and consequences. Once we acknowledge that behaviors, though, are meaningful and protective adaptations to a child's internal experience, we can create a whole new range of compassionate and individually tailored options that surpass just managing behaviors. So today, Dr. Mona Delahooke explains polyvagal theory and the paradigm shift that could be so helpful for parents and educators to make.About Our GuestDr. Mona Delahooke is a best-selling author and child psychologist who aims to reduce suffering and increase resilience for children and families. When our kids are feeling upset, many of us have been told that we need to teach our kids how to self-regulate on their own. But if we take a long hard look into neurodevelopment and how that affects our body and behaviors, and our kids' bodies and behaviors, you can see that kids can't always regulate themselves. But how do we help them learn to self-regulate then? In this episode, we speak with Dr. Mona Delahook, a Child Psychologist and author of Beyond Behaviors as well as her newest book, Brain-Body Parenting: How to Stop Managing Behavior and Start Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids. In this episode, Julie and Ginger invite Dr. Mona Delahooke into the studio. Dr. Delahooke discusses how to raise joyful and resilient children – and isn't that the goal of us all! She is the author of three books, Social and Emotional Development, Beyond Behaviors, and Brain-Body Parenting, which was recently released. Mona says that we must remember, “We are never just a brain - our bodies instruct our brain.” So, what does that mean? How do our bodies instruct our brain? It is all about body budgeting! Everything that happens to us is either a withdrawal or a deposit into or out of our nervous system. We need to be conscious of the body budgeting of ourselves and our children. But remember - Its very individualized. There is no one way. Just know - no one can pour from an empty cup! In this episode, Julie and Ginger talk about the delicate balance between structure and nurture. What are the differences in punishment, consequences, accountability, and discipline? These terms are defined and discussed to determine what works best when doing trauma informed, therapeutic parenting and why. We should always seek to understand what is underneath the child's behaviors, and we need to ask why they are acting the way that they do. As Julie said, “None of this is easy. It's all about establishing a connection. This cannot be done without a relationship.” Check out the new book by Dr. Mona Delahooke, Brain-Body Parenting: How to Stop Managing Behavior and Start Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids. Dr. Delahooke says, “Human beings don't develop new strengths without some level of stretching, but it must be individualized.” This book can be ordered from ATN's bookstore at Brain-Body Parenting. This episode is dedicated to the trail-blazing trauma-informed and attachment-focused work done by Larry Smith, LCSW. (1951-2016)
Dr. Mona Delahooke has more than 30 years of experience as a clinical psychologist caring for children and their families. Now, in her latest book, Brain-Body Parenting, she shares her radical new approach to parenting based on her clinical experience as well as the most cutting edge research in neuroscience and child psychology. In this episode, she talks to Liz about what it means that parents share a nervous system with their child and unpacks the idea of “co-regulation.” She also explains why the concept of “the body budget,” is one of the most important neuroscience discoveries – and why science reinforces the idea of restoring “the village” to mother's lives.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
I want to offer some context for today's episode. My guest is the phenomenal pediatric psychologist and author of the new book, Brain-Body Parenting: How to Stop Managing Behavior and Start Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids, Mona Delahooke. Mona is not a yoga teacher; in fact, her life's work focuses on looking beyond children's behaviors to understand the root cause -- which, in most cases, begins by looking at the nervous system. So, although her work focuses on children and how we parent and teach our children, there is so much beneath the surface that applies to all adults. None of us were parented the way that Mona and her colleagues suggest -- because the neuroscience simply wasn't there when we were kids. Our parents didn't have Polyvagal theory in their back pockets (we talk about this in the episode), they didn't know that the most effective way to manage our behavior was to co-regulate with us, to make sure our "platform" was sturdy, and to practice self-compassion.Now that we know these things, we have the opportunity to practice them in our own lives; to hold space for them in our yoga classes; to view our friends and family's negative behaviors through the lens of the nervous system instead of instantly judging them. This is THE stuff for me right now -- the intersection of neuroscience, psychology, and applied yoga philosophy or mindfulness. This is where we have the power to change our own lives and the lives of those we come into contact with. To break it down, in this episode here are a few of the things we cover:Mona's three-part framework for how to measure the state of the autonomic nervous system, and how to utilize it in working with childrenNew research about interoception and how interoceptive awareness can help children develop emotional literacyCo-regulation and how it's different from coddling or spoiling a child (plus how yoga teachers use it in their classes, even if they don't know it!)Why she feels that flexibility is the cornerstone of resilience for children and adults alikeShow notes: http://www.jasonyoga.com/podcast/episode261 Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/yogaland. One of the most important life skills we can teach our children is the ability to regulate their emotions-the skill of self-regulation. How do we nurture that skill in children is through a process called co-regulation. Mona Delahooke, a clinical psychologist, and author of Brain-Body Parenting: How to Stop Managing Behavior and Start Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids explains what co-regulation is, why it's important, and how to do it. We will also dispel some of the myths around co-regulation. Co-regulation doesn't mean perfection. Do's and don'ts of co-regulation. Dr. Mona Delahooke, clinical psychologist and author of Brain-Body Parenting: How to Stop Managing Behavior and Start Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids, is on for a deeper dive into the parenting conversation. The entire parenting system is focused on behavior and compliance, but is it actually working for our kids? Many behaviors are subconscious, so how do we engage a new way forward with “brain body parenting” to help our kids make good choices and consider the future impact of those choices? Dr. Delahooke teaches us to do that by focusing on what is causing our kids' behavior rather than the behavior itself, setting good boundaries, setting examples, and being empathetic. What is top down behavior, and how does it differ from bottom up behavior? Why is emotional regulation more difficult for neurodivergent people? How impactful or traumatic can a misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis be? ABOUT THE GUEST - Mona Delahooke, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist with more than thirty years of experience caring for children and their families. She is the author of Beyond Behaviors: Using Brain Science and Compassion to Understand and Solve Children's Behavioral Challenges, and the upcoming book, Brain-body Parenting. Episode 34 with child psychologist Mona Delahooke was posted a year ago and remains our top episode on the show. No wonder - Mona's straightforward explanation of why children behave the way they do really resonated with so many listeners. Based on concepts from her book Beyond Behaviors, Mona gives us practical advice on how to address challenging behaviours. She explains why what we see is just the "tip of the iceberg" and why certain approaches to managing challenging behaviours work better than others. Drawing on concepts of the Polyvagal Theory she reframes how we need to understand behaviour so that we can parent more effectively.
In our culture, we often look at the surface behaviors our children exhibit and think it is our job as parents to control those. Instead, if we can look at behaviors as clues to how our child is making sense of the world, we're able to get to the root of what is causing the behavior in the first place. Joining me this week is child psychologist and the author of the new book, Brain-Body Parenting, Dr. Mona Delahooke. We'll talk about the ways you can begin to look past your child's behaviors, creating a roadmap for each unique child, Dr. Mona's color-coded framework to help you understand the nervous system, and how that understanding can be our secret weapon in parenting to raise resilient, self-confident and healthy children. In case you've missed the exciting news, one of our favorite authors on planet Earth, Mona Delahooke, has a new book that comes out NEXT WEEK (March 15th, 2022)! Mona joined us to tell us all about the new book and walk us through what she calls the 'bottom-up' approach to understanding the nervous system-brain connection. We talk about behaviors as indicators of needs being expressed and how when we (along with our kids) understand these dynamics, we can help them to thrive in life. Mona is one of the most brilliant, engaging and compassionate voices in the parenting world and you will LOVE listening to her talk about this stuff. Themes: Behavior management, nervous system, parenting, Polyvagal theory, & education reform. Summary: Over her decades as a clinical psychologist, Dr. Mona Delahooke has routinely counseled distraught parents who struggle to manage their children's challenging, sometimes oppositional behaviors. These families focused on correcting or improving a child's lack of compliance, emotional outbursts, tantrums, and other “out of control” behavior. Science has taught us over the last three decades that these types of approaches are rooted in outdated information. "Behavior management" isn't only ineffective, it's harmful. In this episode, Matt and Dr. Delahooke talk about the challenges within our education system and the essential science of the nervous system that can lead parents to a guidebook on how to parent effectively. The diagnosis or label of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) can feel like a heavy weight for parents and kids. Parenting defiant children can be one of the most challenging experiences parents can face. Dr. Mona Delahooke, pediatric psychologist shares her knowledge and wisdom with us in this episode. One of the most powerful tools Dr. Delahooke shares with us and with her clients she works with is a lens shift about behaviors. Looking beyond the behaviors to the possible root causes behind them is key to understanding our kids. Things such as sensory issues, anxiety, an overly heightened and sensitive nervous system are possible reasons why some children/teens seem to flip a switch and become defiant and/or explosive. Dr. Delahooke suggests to parents to be extremely self compassionate and recognize what a good job they are doing. None of this is your fault and showing compassion and learning to work through our own triggers and struggles is key to staying calm with our kids. Brain-body parenting can help you raise joyful, resilient boys, says Dr. Mona Delahooke. Boys' behavior offers clues as to what's going on inside the child -- and deciphering what's happening internally can help us tailor our response to the unique human individual before us. It's time to "move from focusing on behaviors to focusing on how each child perceives, understands, and interprets their world," says Dr. Delahooke, a child psychologist and author of Brain-Body Parenting: How to Stop Managing Behavior and Start Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids and Beyond Behaviors: Using Brain Science and Compassion to Understand and Solve Children's Behavioral Challenges. The autonomic nervous system is our "automatic nervous system," she explains. It controls our bodies' unconscious, non-voluntary reactions. Importantly, the triggers for each of us can be different. So, while some people aren't bothered by noisy environments or tags on their clothing, other people who experience those same triggers may feel "threatened," even though they are objectively safe. Their bodies may move into the "red zone," which is characterized by increased alertness and reactivity, an increased heart rate, and a desire or need to move. Chronic stress can lead to the "blue zone," a state in which humans often withdraw to conserve energy. The green, red, and blue zones are adaptive. "You are witnessing the power of human resilience," Dr. Delahooke says. "Those states are there to protect us." Learning to recognize these states of being can help parents determine an appropriate challenge zone for their kids -- and may reveal expectation gaps. You can use that information to more effectively and compassionately support your boys. In this episode, Jen, Janet & Mona discuss: What is brain-body parenting? The link between the nervous system and behavior Green, red, and blue zones -- an easy way to recognize a person's current level of functioning Checks-ins vs. time-outs Getting curious about kids' behaviors Body budgets Parental self-care The challenge zone Expectation gaps Co-regulation Parallels between toddlerhood & adolescence How unrealistic expectations for young boys cause problems for boys in school Links we mentioned (or should have) in this episode: Brain-Body Parenting: How to Stop Managing Behavior and Start Raising Joyful, Resilient Kids, by Dr. Mona Delahooke Beyond Behaviors: Using Brain Science and Compassion to Understand and Solve Children's Behavioral Challenges, by Dr. Mona Delahooke monadelahooke.com -- Dr. Delahooke's website Sensory Processing Disorder with Nancy Peske -- ON BOYS episode Need help with your boys? In this chat I talk to Mona Delahooke about the Polyvagal theory and ways to help children when they shut down or when they are in a fight or flight state. I speak to Dr. Mona about her book "Beyond Behaviors" that shifted the way I looked at parenting looking at behaviors as the tip of the iceberg and focusing on developing meaningful relationships. As parents we need to pay attention to the important signals that we should address by seeking to understand a child's individual differences in the context of relational safety. We also speak about DIR FloorTime and about bottom up and top down approaches and why there is no such thing as "Good" or Bad" behavior. Dr. Mona Delahooke, child psychologist and best selling author shares her expertise on the core reasons behind some of the most challenging behaviors our kids exhibit. Why do tantrums, defiance, back talk and disrespect happen? Dr. Delahooke in her research has found that most difficult behaviors happen when a child's nervous system is immature and signals to the child they are unsafe. She talks about the often diagnosed disorder ODD (oppositional defiance disorder) and deconstructs it into a child or teen feeling unsafe and threatened. This is a powerful episode for parents or educators to listen to and learn from. It has the potential for a big perspective shift in our parenting and attitudes towards our kids behaviors Dr. Mona Delahooke website Get the Beyond Behaviors book

Hi everyone! Welcome back to another episode of the Punch Drunk Soul Podcast! I'm your host Ali Daniel. Today I have a friend and fellow coach, Kendra Delahooke on the show! Kendra is also a licensed marriage and family therapist who now specializes in parent coaching and helping children overcome anxiety and related challenges. She loves supporting families to make parenting easier and more enjoyable. She has completed training in DIR Floortime, somatic, and trauma therapies which we start to dive into on this episode and how Kendra uses her training and knowledge of these practices in her coaching business. As her coaching business has started to take off in the last year, Kendra has also had the opportunity to start speaking and presenting to parents at schools, conferences and even other major companies like Snapchat about her work. I'm thrilled to share this episode with you guys because we get into some practical tools you can use to calm your anxiety, cast out fear, and break out of the small life you've been conditioned to pursue. Kendra shares how she was able to overcome a lot of her fear and anxiety around teaching and being a coach by getting in touch with her WHY and how the enneagram has helped her understand her inherent tendencies and break through her perceived barriers. We also dive into each person's individual wiring and how it affects how we perceive situations differently and why some people are afraid of crowds while others aren't and how we can start to use the way we're wired to manage stress, anxiety, fear and so on. Kendra and I both relate to being 9's on the enneagram and how through our businesses we've been able to heal and fulfill our unmet childhood needs - which for the both of us happens to be not being “seen.” What I love about this episode is it gives us a full well-rounded view of how our bodies are emotional, physical, mental systems and that understanding each part will help us function more fully as a whole and have more success. We can't simply strive to understand pieces of the whole system, we need to understand how they all work together to make us who we are and I think this episode gives us a good baseline for starting to understand ourselves in the full picture. I know you'll enjoy this interview if you love science and a little bit of the woo-woo because we get into both to better help you understand yourself! In this episode, Dr. Delahooke and I break down the brain science behind children's mood and behavior. Often we approach our child's actions as intentional or deliberate when they are misbehaving or reacting to a situation when many times there are underlying reasons that explain the action that they are unable to communicate. Dr. Delahooke helps us understand these emotions by explaining the brain science behind children's actions with concepts like ‘neuroception' allowing us to better approach and help our children with love and support. Special guest: Mona Delahooke, PhD. A kindergartener whose father pinches her on the arm at night- once for every time her teacher wrote the girl's name on the behavior chart at school that day. A three year old in foster care who was found sitting in a car by the side of the road with his mother, who was passed out at the wheel. His daycare-center teacher sends him to a time out room for challenging behaviors. A ten year old is diagnosed with Oppositional Defiant Disorder. His teachers say he is chronically disruptive, always seeking attention, His problematic behaviors began after his family relocated to a new state. My next guest says that we are too quick to look at behaviors as attempts to annoy and disrupt—rather than what they truly represent- observable responses to our internal and external experiences. And here's the problem with that- When we fail to recognize that many behaviors represent the body's response to stress, not intentional misbehavior, we expend effort on techniques designed to help children logically connect their thoughts, emotions and behaviors and change them—when they simply can't yet. Instead, we need to see the behavior that is problematic and confusing and NOT ask ourselves how do we get rid of it? But rather, what is this telling us about the child? The answer will then guide us to coming up with the best approach to help that individual child thrive. Mona Delahooke, Ph.D. is a clinical child psychologist with a passion for supporting families and children. She has worked widely with multidisciplinary teams in the areas of trauma, developmental and emotional differences for 25 years. She is a senior faculty member of the Profectum Foundation and is a trainer and consultant to schools and agencies including the Los Angeles Department of Mental Health. Her blog, The Visible Parent, and book, Social & Emotional Development in Early Intervention (2017) explore the latest translational applications of neuroscience to social and emotional development. She is also the author of Beyond Behaviors: Using Brain Science and Compassion to Understand and Solve Children's Behavioral Challenges. (At the very least, you'll feel inspired and supported!) It's a clear 2022 favorite: Brain-Body Parenting with Dr. Mona Delahooke was downloaded more than 13,000 times in 2022.Some highlights:It's time to “move from focusing on behaviors to focusing on how each child perceives, understands, and interprets their world,” says Dr. Delahooke.and“You are witnessing the power of human resilience.”In this episode, Jen, Janet & Mona discuss:What is brain-body parenting? The link between the nervous system and behaviorGreen, red, and blue zones — an easy way to recognize a person's current level of functioningChecks-ins vs. time-outsGetting curious about kids' behaviorsBody budgetsParental self-careThe challenge zoneExpectation gapsCo-regulationParallels between toddlerhood & adolescenceHow unrealistic expectations for young boys cause problems for boys in schoolNeed help with your boys?Subscribe to Jen's newsletter, Building Boys BulletinJoin Janet Allison's real-time, monthly group coaching program, Decoding Your Boy Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
Which ON BOYS episodes were the Best of 2022? Some of our favorites!5. Raising LGBTQ AlliesChris Tompkins, author of Raising LGBTQ Allies: A Parent's Guide to Changing the Messages from the Playground, recognized the power of unspoken messages when his then 6-year-old nephew asked him — an openly gay man — if the female friend with him was his girlfriend. In that moment, Chris realized that his nephew didn't know he was gay. In conversations with adult family members the next day, Chris learned that most believed that his nephew wasn't “old enough to understand.”4. How Microschools & Black Moms May End the School to Prison PipelineWhen they realized that schools wouldn't change quickly enough to meet their kids' needs, members of the Black Mothers Forum opened microschools, with an eye toward ending the school to prison pipeline.Existing school leaders and educators “really did not understand how to create a safe and supportive learning environment for our Black children,” says Janelle Wood, President of The Black Mothers Forum, Inc.3. Myths & Misconceptions About BoysHow many do you believe?“Boys are easier than girls.”“Boys are less emotional than girls.”“Boys leave their families when they grow up.”“With boys, you don't have to fight over clothing choices.”“There's less to worry about with a son than a daughter when they're teenagers and dating.”2. Picky Eaters, Family Meals, & Nutrition“I felt confident going into parenting!” says Rebecca Toutant, a registered dietician who began her career helping children with autism and sensory issues expand their palate. “I thought my boys would be these really wonderful, adventurous eaters and we'd sit down at the dinner table and have such peaceful family meals.”…Children are naturally “neo-phobic,” or hesitant to try new things, Rebecca says. That's a protective instinct. So, our kids look to us to see how we're interacting with and reacting to food — & many, many, MANY exposures to a food (as many as 10-20) for a child to accept it.1. Brain-Body ParentingIt's time to “move from focusing on behaviors to focusing on how each child perceives, understands, and interprets their world,” says Dr. The autonomic nervous system is our “automatic nervous system,” she explains. It controls our bodies' unconscious, non-voluntary reactions. Importantly, the triggers for each of us can be different.A few of our other 2022 favorites:Why are Video Games So Important to Boys?Sex Talks w TweensHelping Boys Develop Healthy Body ImageWhich were your favorite episodes of 2022?Need help with your boys?Subscribe to Jen's newsletter, Building Boys BulletinJoin Janet Allison's real-time, monthly group coaching program, Decoding Your Boy Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
