Episode #351 // I came across a great quote recently, thanks to one of the leaders in our inner circle, Natasha Read. It was a quote from Maria Montessori, who devised the Montessori method of teaching. The method focuses on the development of a child's inherent initiative and ability, allowing them to develop at their own pace. It emphasises growth through independence and experimentation. The quote is a blinder… “Everything you do for me, you take from me!” It hit me like a pie in the face: I immediately thought of the principle of working at level, which is a critical part of the No Bullsh!t Leadership framework. There are lots of good reasons to not over function for the people you lead, and this might just be the most compelling of those reasons. When you do your people's work, you're not saving them…you're stunting their growth. In this episode, I'm going to go into the working at level principles in the sort of depth that I normally reserve for our Leadership Beyond the Theory cohorts. I've also put together a great PDF resource to accompany this episode, 5 Rules for Leading Without Over-Functioning: A Leader's Guide to Working at the Right Level which you can download here https://www.yourceomentor.com/episode351. Enjoy! ————————

"Education wasn't for certain people." In this conversation, Phil and Professor Colin Beard delve into the history and evolution of experiential learning, exploring its prehistory and the cognitive capacities that have shaped human learning. They discuss the limitations of traditional educational models and the importance of recognizing the contributions of lesser-known figures in education, such as Maria Montessori and Marina Ewald. The conversation culminates in the introduction of the Holistic Experiential Learning Model (HELM), emphasizing the need for a more complex understanding of learning that incorporates various human capacities. Humans have been learning throughout their entire existence. The evolution of learning capacities spans millions of years. Traditional educational models often overlook essential cognitive functions. Maria Montessori's contributions to education are significant yet underrecognized. The complexity of learning requires a holistic approach. Experiential learning should utilize all human capacities. Simplicity in educational models can lead to limitations. The importance of questioning in the learning process is paramount. Silenced voices in education highlight systemic biases. The Holistic Experiential Learning Model (HELM) offers a new perspective on learning. Ever count using your fingers as an adult? Ever struggle to articulate an idea until you sketch it out on a whiteboard? Ever discuss 'stakeholder relationships' during lunch by sliding around the table condiments? Ever moved Lego objects around to scenario test project implementation? Ever considered how ‘playing around' with objects helps you ‘play around' with ideas? Maybe we've overlooked that these everyday gestures highlight our fundamental human tendency to think with our body and think with things. In this episode, we chatted with Yvette Standberry, former Head of Innovation at Mathematica, about her journey as a Catalyst leader. Yvette shares how her commitment to "learning by doing" shaped her success. She shared the importance of recognizing patterns across systems to create efficiencies and how learning to tell compelling stories helps bring stakeholders on board at the right time. She emphasizes the importance of empowering others in the change process, cautioning that Catalysts can burn out if they try to carry all the weight themselves. Her wisdom reminds us that it's never "all about me"—true change happens when we treat stakeholders like customers, listening deeply to their needs and co-creating the future with them. For one of her favorite inspirational Catalysts, Yvette chose Maria Montessori, because she loves that inter-age group focused, learning by doing and through peers – all of which she is building into her next endeavor. How do childhood experiences mold our adult lives? Byron Ricks, Josh Wambrodt and Brandon Ricks invite you to explore this intriguing question on the Father Factor Podcast. Together, we promise to uncover the significant influence of childhood enablement on adulthood, featuring insights from Erik Erikson and Maria Montessori. Listen as we share personal stories, like how structured meal plans transformed our picky eaters into culinary adventurers, ready to embrace life's many flavors and challenges. As the conversation unfolds, we tackle the thorny issue of entitlement, dissecting its effects on personal relationships and society. Byron recounts an anecdote about dating someone with restricted food preferences, serving as a launching pad to examine parenting styles that cater excessively to children's whims. Through this lens, we discuss how societal attitudes towards challenges can inadvertently foster a sense of entitlement and leave individuals unprepared for adult responsibilities. By connecting these threads to everyday occurrences like road rage, we reveal the hidden complexities behind adult reactions when expectations fall short. In the final chapters, we delve into the role of parental enablement in shaping behavior. Through mentoring tales and school incidents, we highlight the consequences of a lack of boundaries and the cultural shift away from communal child-rearing practices. The episode concludes with a call to action for parents to reflect on their influence, stressing the importance of raising independent, responsible adults. We urge fathers to engage with us on our online platforms, reinforcing their indispensable role in their children's lives and inviting them to join the conversation with their unique insights.Support the show Keep in touch.Email: Brm2@fatherfactorpodcast.comFollow us on Instagram Like us on Facebookhttps://www.amazon.com/Searching-Dad-Effects-Fatherless-Overcome/dp/1934812129
Hello, listeners! It's time for a new Brave Story.
In her 1936 book, The Secret of Childhood, Maria Montessori writes that “We must wake up to the great reality that children have a psychic life whose delicate manifestations escape notice and whose pattern of activity can be unconsciously disrupted by adults.” The approach to education that Montessori established sought to remove such unnecessary disruptions while cultivating a fruitful environment wherein children could discover the world, grow toward the maturation of their God-given capacities, and experience the wonder and responsibility of real freedom. Montessori schools have since been established all across the United States and indeed across the world, including here in my own hometown of South Bend, Indiana. The conversation on our episode today will focus on one such school, St. Joseph Montessori, which is in fact a Catholic Montessori school for children ages 2.5 to 6. My guest is Dr. Elizabeth Capdevielle, who is a board member of St. Joseph Montessori, and who, as a trained Montessori educator, will help us learn more about the Montessori approach, the anthropological underpinnings of this education, and the correspondence of Montessori education to a Catholic vision of the world and the human person. In addition to serving on the board at St. Joseph Montessori, Beth is an assistant teaching professor at the University of Notre Dame, where she teaches in the University Writing Program.

How does Montessori practice embed sustainability? Montessori Consultant Sarah Cummins explains that social development sits alongside academic learning, children are supported in building a sense of ownership of their community and environmental stewardship is embedded early on. We also discuss some misconceptions around Montessori practice as well as how we can support higher education students in becoming passionate educators and sustainably minded advocates for the planet. Understanding how to facilitate, organize, and prepare an environment that fosters student choice is one of the most challenging aspects of being a Montessori Elementary teacher. Educators who follow the Montessori approach know that Maria Montessori placed a lot of emphasis on the idea of “choice,” and while the notion of choice is universally celebrated and held sacred for young children up until the age of 6 (such as in other Montessori environments or in play-based preschools), this idea sometimes falls to the wayside when children enter into elementary and adolescent programs. In today's episode, Letty Rising explains that there are different levels of choice, and that students can have choice in their work and still develop the skills needed to master standards. What's in this episode:What different levels of choice look like in the Elementary classroomFacilitating an environment that allows the opportunity for children to choose their workBuilding common core standards around a child's interestSupporting children who struggle with independence and making choicesWhen teacher choice and child choice come into playEnsuring students are progressing in key areas by using tools for accountabilityFor full show notes, resources, links and to download the transcript, visit:https://www.trilliummontessori.org/Resources Mentioned in This Episode:N/AConnect With UsVisit our websiteFollow us on InstagramConnect with us on Facebook
In the aftermath of the atrocities of WWII, Maria Montessori gave a speech. Given the current state of the world, especially with the recent horrific attack on Israel -- really on all civilized human beings -- her talk is well worth hearing. "... the monster does not come to life all of a sudden. It is not created in one moment, in one hour, in one week, even in one year."
