Attunement is the ability to perceive and respond to the emotions of another and it is vital to good relationships, dog-human or otherwise. This is a magical thing, but also a practical skillset that can be learned. NA'ALEH YOGA: Nidra Journeys for Deep Rest+ Close Your Eyes and Stay Awake... This episode is part of the Jewish Calendar Series and is created for the month of Av. This month focuses on rectifying the sense of hearing and invites you to descend into the healing darkness where you can listen deeply to connect with the resonance of your soul. Through practicing Yoga Nidra, you take a pause from all the sensory input channels except for sound so you can focus on the space within. This practice of Yoga Nidra guides you in the exploration of sound as you journey through the layers of consciousness from the body, breath, and mind to your deeper understanding and soul consciousness. Instead of a traditional verbal visualization, this practice contains a non-verbal sound visualization sequence to support deepest listening beyond that which words can express, while you are held in a state of relaxation. Please note that this practice may bring out unexpected emotions or memories. This is completely normal, and you are encouraged to welcome all that shows up with curiosity and compassionate witnessing. If this is not the right time for you to elicit emotions, then a milder practice may be better suited for the time being. Prepare for a transformative experience as you receive the gift of rest in the stillness of your soul. Allow your body and mind to relax deeply as you sail through sounds and silence and hear your soul's whispers. Episode Summary: Here's what you can expect: Preparation: Begin by settling into a comfortable position. Make sure you're fully supported completely at ease. Intention Setting: You will be guided to set a powerful Sankalpa/kavanah (intention) for this practice. Choose a meaningful, positive "I am..." statement that resonates with your heart and soul, reflecting your life's orienting resolve and deepest truth. Rotation of Consciousness: Experience a thorough body scan by listening to each part of your body as you transition into a state of deeper relaxation. Breath Awareness: Practice guided breathwork to while focusing on the sound of your breath Polarities: Train your mind to respond rather than react by practicing holding space for yourself as you hear sounds evoking opposite experiences. Observe how these opposite sounds affect your body. Visualization: Experience a non-verbal sound healing visualization sequenced to move you into a deeper state of consciousness. Return to Your Intention: Reconnect with the intention you set earlier. Let it resonate deeply into your being. Externalization: Gradually transition back to your ordinary waking state and integrate the practice Background Music from Pixabay: Binaural Flotation Meditation by Nature's Eye Music for Sleep, Song of the Sea by Astria Lyrioth Subscribe to Na'aleh Yoga for more meditative Yoga Nidra journeys and transformative experiences. Affairs grab our attention. Whether it's someone in the news or a friend of a friend, we tune in, pass judgement, or quietly reflect on our own relationships. But what is it that makes cheating stories so captivating? In this episode, I talk about why we care so much about other people's affairs. I explore how unmet needs, identity, and longing can show up in relationships. I unpack what betrayal can do to a person's sense of self, why fantasy can feel easier than reality, and why some couples do try to rebuild after infidelity. This is not about sensationalism or blame. It's a real conversation about what I see in the therapy room and what can help people make sense of something painful and complicated. What I cover in this episodeWhy cheating stories hook us, even when they're not oursHow social referencing plays into our opinions on infidelityWhat betrayal can do to trust, identity, and mental healthThe messiness of defining cheating in relationshipsHow unmet needs and longing can fuel emotional or physical affairsWhat it can look like to recover as an individualWhat's involved in repairing a relationship after an affairWhy not all couples stay togetherWhat happens when a relationship starts as an affairThe impact of perpetual problems in relationships (Gottman research: 69 percent of issues are ongoing)Why switching partners doesn't always solve core differencesWhat couples need to rebuild trust and connectionReferenced in this episode

Wow, this conversation with Robin Waugaman truly had my mind crackling with connections and ideas! Her way of drawing the connections between stewardship of land, horses, and her own body and being is powerful, and I had a few big aha's during our chat, as you'll hear, including an epiphany on why we might use force with horses (even if we don't want to), especially in our "pusher" culture. We also get into what she means by regenerative ranching and how it works, how she manages her own nervous system with her horses ranging on 1,800 acres and what lessons she's learned about supporting the land to return to itself more fully. Also, show of hands, who wants to go to New Mexico after listening to her description of where she lives? It sounds heavenly! Join us for this mind-opening conversation reminding us that how we do one thing is how we do all the things, and that healthy relationship to land is supportive to all our other relationships, especially with our horses. Robin serves as the Land and Animal Steward at a regenerative ranch in Taos, New Mexico, where she also work as a horse-human relational facilitator at Taos Equine Connection. Her work focuses on the collaborative regeneration of 1,800 acres of high desert ecosystem through integrative land management practices that center the roles of equines—horses and donkeys—as active agents in ecological restoration. Grounded in a non-hierarchical, multispecies perspective, her approach draws from a diverse background in ecology, French classical dressage, somatic experiencing, and equestrian sport. She is particularly interested in the relational dynamics between species and how embodied attunement, agency, and choice contribute to resilience across systems. Her practice weaves scientific inquiry with experiential knowledge to explore new models of interspecies connection, land stewardship, and ethical cohabitation. During this solo episode, Mona Kay talks about how important emotional reciprocity can be in a neurodiverse relationship. Learning how to give and receive emotional reciprocity can begin to change your connection to your partner and your relationship. As you each learn new ways of emotionally connecting, be patient and give each other grace and time to learn a new way to show you care. The topics addressed include:The importance of listening to hear and understand (not just respond).Be curious...not judgmental.Ask you partner for what you need...listening, input, problem solving, or a hug.Attunement and connection.Remember you're on the same team.Your partner usually doesn't intend to hurt you. Sometimes their intent may be misunderstood and may have a negative impact. You may both cause each other unintentional hurt.Apologize and repair. If you would like to learn more about the resources Mona has available you can check out her website at: neurodiverselove.com

Questions? Comments? Text Us!In this episode of God: An Autobiography, The Podcast, Dr. Jerry L. Martin talks with Dr. Ray Silverman, a Swedenborgian minister who grew up in a passionately atheist home but always felt a hidden connection to God.From secretly praying under the covers as a child to later discovering Emanuel Swedenborg's writings on eternal marriage and universal salvation, Ray shares how his journey led him beyond traditional religion into a deeply personal spiritual life.Together, Jerry and Ray explore what it means to be spiritual but not religious, how modern revelation continues today, and why spiritual transformation often begins with questioning inherited beliefs. Ray recounts the pain of being disowned by his father when he became a minister, and the joy of finding a faith that embraces love as eternal. They discuss how Swedenborg's teachings align with insights in God: An Autobiography, affirming that God speaks to each person in a way they can understand. Dr. Silverman, author of Rise Above It: Spiritual Development for College Students, also shares how he applies the Ten Commandments in modern life without dogma, helps others overcome “idols” like procrastination, and guides people to attune to divine purpose through everyday moments.Whether you're curious about Swedenborgian theology, interested in modern revelation, or seeking your own spiritual story, this episode offers profound reflections on faith, love, and the ongoing presence of God.Other Series:The podcast began with the Dramatic Adaptation of the book and now has several series:The Life Wisdom Project – Spiritual insights on living a wiser, more meaningful life. From God to Jerry to You – Divine messages and breakthroughs for seekers. Two Philosophers Wrestle With God – A dialogue on God, truth, and reason.Jerry & Abigail: An Intimate Dialogue – Love, faith, and divine presence in partnership. What's Your Spiritual Story – Real stories of people changed by encounters with God.What's On Our Mind – Reflections from Jerry and Scott on recent episodes. What's On Your Mind – Listener questions, divine answers, and open dialogue. Send us a textSecure attachment forms the foundation for a child's healthy development and shapes how they view themselves, others, and the world. We explore the four key attributes caregivers need to foster secure attachment: being present, attentive, attuned, and responsive.• A secure attachment relationship is defined as one that's "free from danger or risk," creating a healthy and safe space for children• Secure attachment forms when caregivers consistently respond to a child's needs, showing them they are important and valued• Children with secure attachment develop a "secure base" that allows them to explore the world confidently, knowing they have a safe place to return to• Crying at daycare drop-offs can actually indicate healthy attachment – the child wants to be with you and knows you'll return• Being physically and emotionally present is the foundation for all other aspects of secure caregiving• Attentiveness means paying close attention to what your child is doing and learning from their behaviors• Attunement is the ability to accurately read and interpret your child's signals beyond surface behaviors• Responsive caregiving teaches children that they matter and that seeking help is valuable• Play accelerates attachment building – according to Dr. Karyn Purvis, it can cut healing time in half for children from difficult backgrounds• Securely attached children develop powerful internal messages: "I am important," "Others are helpful," and "The world is safe"Join us next week as we discuss avoidant attachment and continue our exploration of attachment styles.Contact:podcasts@calfarley.org To Donate: https://secure.calfarley.org/site/Donation2?3358.donation=form1&df_id=3358&mfc_pref=TTo Apply:https://apply.workable.com/cal-farleys-boys-ranch/j/25E1226091/For More Information about Cal Farley's Boys Ranch:https://www.calfarley.org/Music:"Shine" -NewsboysCCS License No. 9402

Motherhood demands that we see the beauty and the lessons in the micro moments that most people take for granted while mindlessly scrolling on their phones, rushing out the door, or even when they're physically present but mentally checked out. The magic of motherhood happens in the quotidian, mundane, messy interactions, not in the elaborate, grand gestures. The spiritual calling of motherhood is available to every mother; the question is, is every mother ready to answer its call? When our frenetic society obsessed with metrics, productivity, efficiency, and jam-packed schedules is telling us to do more and be more, that should be our cue to slow down and be nowhere else but present. If we aren't really present for our kids, then what is the point of all of this anyway? What magical, picture-perfect moment are we trying to fast forward to, and why does our culture laud business as if there is no higher honor to achieve? Join just the two of us as we reflect upon how each of us is deepening our response to the spiritual calling of motherhood.Resources + Books Mentioned: Rebecca Giannini - The Present Parents Coaching (code MOTR saves you 15%)Scattered Minds by Dr. Gabor Mate, MDThe Conscious Parent by Dr. Shefali Tsabary, MDThe Seven Spiritual Laws for Parents by Deepak ChopraSupport the showJOIN OUR NEW, PRIVATE COMMUNITY! Happy Satiated Saturday! Making friends as an adult can be hard! Not only can it be difficult to find people you truly connect with, but it can also be hard to put yourself out there when you've experienced trauma in relationships with others. There can be fear that you will be hurt again, as you were in the past. Yet, while trauma can occur in relationships, healing relational wounds can occur in relationships with others as well. Why is it that sometimes the things that are supposed to help us feel calm actually make us feel more anxious instead? In this mini-episode, Dr. Aimie explores why this happens, expanding on her conversation with Dr. Sue Carter from Episode 125. She answers therapist Sarah's question about why some people struggle with relaxation techniques and reveals the surprising science behind it. You'll hear more on: Why oxytocin is called "nature's fire extinguisher" and how it helps you heal How oxytocin and vasopressin work together (not against each other!) Why past difficult experiences can make your body think "quiet time" is dangerous How your brain's control center decides if you're safe or not Simple ways to feel safer in your body before trying relaxation techniques If you're a practitioner working with clients who struggle with calming techniques or if you've ever wondered why meditation or mindfulness makes you feel worse instead of better, this episode explains what's happening in the body and gives practical ways to work with it instead of against it. To hear the full episode and learn more about how stress hormones affect healing, head over to Episode 125: Why the Mind & Body Can't Heal Without Oxytocin with Dr. Sue Carter.

Meaningful relationships are mutual. Balanced with give and take, equal influence between partners, and a vibrant dance of loving responsiveness and caring attention.Marriage and Family Therapist and professor Dr. Jessica ChenFeng is calling us toward a more justice-oriented approach to relationships and to mental health and well-being, She invites us to open-hearted and empathic perspective taking, and seeking an integrated wholeness that incorporates all of who we are—highlighting the gift of mutuality in our most intimate relationships in marriage and family life.In this conversation with Jessica ChenFeng, we discuss:The importance of integrated and whole experience of ourselves—allowing racial, gender, and cultural identities to weave together in our sense of vocation and contribution to the worldThe importance of mutuality in relationships—but particularly in marriage and family systems. The ways emotional power flows in a relationship and impacts marriage and family dynamicsThe difference between partners focusing on meeting their individual needs and caring for the health of an intimate relationshipAnd she offers a guided practical exercise to help us lovingly notice and accept our inner experience with a heart open to justice, vulnerability, and the reminder that we are beloved in the eyes of God.Episode Highlights"Systems of power harm everyone—and to live life to the full, we have to see each other fully.""I believe our move toward life to the full requires us to see the world through a third-order lens: not just family systems, but the racial, gender, and societal systems they exist within.""Mutuality means not just expressing our needs but being willing to be changed by the needs of others.""If we're not attuned to the pleasant sensations in our bodies, we miss the invitations to thrive.""Cultural norms are not God-given realities; they are social constructs we are invited to discern and transform.""Knowledge without authentic relationship keeps us from truly seeing the embodied experiences of others."Helpful Links and ResourcesCheck out the programs in Marriage & Family Therapy at Fuller School of Psychology www.fuller.edu/school-of-psychology/Fuller Asian American Center aac.fuller.edu/Socio-Emotional Relationship Therapy (SERT) OverviewCircle of Care Model ExplainedPositive Psychology and EmotionsJeanne Tsai's Research on Culture and EmotionAsian American Values Scale ReferenceRace and Trauma ResourcesJeanne Tsai's research on culture and emotion – Stanford SPARQJohn and Julie Gottman Relationship ResearchAsian American Values Scale – Paniagua & Yamada (Academic resource)Show NotesJessica ChenFeng shares her "yes and" identity as a second-generation Taiwanese American grounded in both math and creativity. How earthy aesthetics and connection to nature shape Jessica's professional and personal flourishing. The integration of Christian faith with clinical work at Fuller Seminary."Seeing systems of systems" — why thriving requires understanding how race, gender, and cultural forces shape individuals and families.Introduction to socio-emotional relationship therapy (SERT) and the value of mutuality in relationships.Defining mutuality: mutual attunement, mutual influence, mutual vulnerability, and mutual relational responsibility."Mutuality asks: Are both people tending to the relationship itself?"Practical signs of mutual and non-mutual relationships, including emotional attunement and willingness to be influenced. The importance of humility and relational awareness in building mutual relationships. The Circle of Care model: cultivating healthy relational dynamics through attunement and responsiveness.Discerning relational power dynamics in marriages, friendships, and work relationships."Thriving is an open heart, even on a stressful day."How emotional self-control in Asian American cultures is often rooted in relational ethics, not personal repression. The risk and gift of navigating cross-generational emotional communication in immigrant families.Differentiated selfhood: balancing authenticity with cultural respect in relational dynamics.Race, culture, and relational healing: why systems of privilege harm everyone."Love your neighbor as yourself" as an ethic for mutual flourishing across racial and cultural difference.Building trust by leaning into discomfort and courageous conversations. The need for embodied encounters with real people beyond theories of race and difference.Mindfulness practice: Jessica leads a guided exercise in attuning to pleasant sensations in the body. The transformational power of positive emotions and embodiment for creativity and resilience. The relational impact of systemic racialization and why "colorblindness" fails to honor real lived experience.Final reflections: How knowing who we are through systemic and relational lenses allows deeper thriving.Pam King's Key TakeawaysEach of us in the human family is a beloved child of God—and we need to continue to shape society to reflect this foundational truth. The path to meaning and fulfillment in a relationship starts with noticing and acknowledging the flow of emotional power, and its destination is mutuality and humilityThriving means incorporating all of who we are—our heritage and histories especially—into our love of ourselves, our love of others, and love of God.Our intimate relationships need care and attention as a third reality beyond our selves and our partners. And finally, thriving means opening our hearts each day, connecting our inner and relational realities, and learning to love patiently the multitudes we all contain.About Jessica ChenFengDr. Jessica ChenFeng is Associate Professor at the School of Psychology & Marriage and Family Therapy at Fuller Seminary, and is also Director of the Asian American Well-being Collaboratory at Fuller's Asian American Center. Whether you're hoping to improve your marriage, deepen your self-awareness, or finally feel safe in love, this episode meets you right where you are. Inner Child Healer Tami Schiltz joins forces with psychotherapist, sex educator, and relationship coach Christie Bemis to unpack the real reasons relationships feel stuck—and how inner child work can unlock lasting connection, communication, and emotional safety. You'll learn how childhood patterns sneak into adult relationships, how to identify your adaptive child responses, and why being triggered is actually an invitation to heal—not a red flag. We also break down Christie's SPARCS relationship assessment tool (Safety, Play/Pleasure, Attunement, Realized Dreams, Communication, and Sex/Intimacy), and the 5 losing strategies that sabotage connection: withdrawal, retaliation, controlling, needing to be right, and unbridled self-expression. Corey Costanzo is the Co-Owner of Asheville's Still Point Wellness Spa, a licensed addiction counselor, trauma specialist, licensed massage therapist, master didgeridoo player, colleague, and my good friend. In this episode, Corey and I have a conversation about mind reading. Mind reading is a cognitive distortion where individuals believe they can accurately guess or know what others are thinking or feeling without direct communication. In relationships, this often involves making assumptions about a partner's thoughts, feelings, or intentions based on minimal or ambiguous cues. Attunement is different than mind reading, which we elaborate on. In this episode, I'm speaking to fellow yoga teachers who might feel a bit stuck after their initial 200-hour training. These feelings of limitation can be frustrating, but they can be important milestones on our journey to becoming therapeutic yoga teachers. I break down this growth into five stages: Awareness, Assessment, Adaptation, Attunement, and Application. Each is a blend of technical skills and emotional growth, all aimed at helping us support students dealing with pain or movement issues more effectively. I truly believe in the power of embracing vulnerability and committing to lifelong learning. So, if you're looking to deepen your practice and make a bigger impact, I'm here to offer guidance and encouragement.
In this episode of the Complicated Kids Podcast, I talk with Rebekah Marler, a former school principal and current parent to a neurodivergent child, about how her experience challenged everything she thought she knew about development and learning. She shares how traditional milestone-based approaches failed her son and how discovering practices like floor time and Anji Play helped her reconnect with joy, regulation, and intuition. We explore the process of unlearning “educator brain,” the importance of co-regulation, and how her family transformed their North Carolina backyard into a self-directed play haven—mud pits and all—reminding us that real growth often starts with play. Dr. Ryan Seedall draws on his 20+ years of experience as a therapist to share insights about relationship conflict patterns and the role of attachment in marriage dynamics. He provides practical pointers to strengthen marriage connections, including how to navigate the demand-withdraw cycle and use anger productively.• Healthy marriages require not just absence of negative interactions but presence of positive ones• Couples need to recover from conflict, not just learn how to argue better• The demand-withdraw pattern creates a cycle where one person's behavior triggers the exact response they're trying to avoid• "Signal and respond" describes how partners communicate needs and respond to each other• Anger serves as a protest signal that something needs attention, not necessarily a destructive force• Technology creates new challenges for couples, with text arguments losing crucial nonverbal cues• Mixed-faith marriages require special navigation of differing beliefs and values• Early intervention is crucial - addressing small issues before they become entrenched patterns• Attunement to partner's emotional state builds trust and connection• Vulnerability, when met with responsiveness, creates deeper intimacyRemember, it's the small things that create a stronger marriage connection. Why is attunement the heart of the therapeutic relationship? In this episode, Lisa Dion explores why simply following a script or checklist in play therapy isn't enough—true transformation happens when we deeply attune to our clients (and ourselves).
