Brandi Harvey: Beyond Her Episode Introduction Many of us hover over unworthy relationships and habits only because saying a healthy goodbye is hard. We end up going back to places that don't serve us, being around people who don't love us, and spending money on things that deplete us. Today, we learn that there's a lot more to us than we can visualize. In this episode, Herdyne speaks with Brandi Harvey, Founder of Beyond Her, a network for women at the start of their careers who want to feel less like imposters and more like instigators. Brandi and Herdyne speak their hearts out on topics of life, fitness, and goals. Herdyne also talks about how she was searching for wisdom three years ago and how her life changed when she ultimately found it and enabled her to air her first podcast episode; gave her purpose. Brandi narrates her life journey to us. She recalls that her first podcast made her life upside down; she got fired, had to commit to going to therapy every year, and expanded her podcast theme to mental and physical health from physical health alone. Her journey with silent meditation taught her to be still. We learn that people find it hard to heal because they confront situations not knowing how to be still. Brandi also discloses her freedom class which mainly focuses on healing your life from the inside out and not on money and fame. Attaining stillness isn't an easy journey. Brandi shares that she had to confront the silence band after being still, feeling irritated and angry. But she continued to practice the same because she wanted to elevate herself. Herdyne talks about healthy goodbyes. Brandi remembers how she had to talk about the first chapter – Lose to Win, of her book in a conference and describes how we have a scarcity and poverty mentality that causes us to refrain from healthy goodbyes to things that we might not receive any more than that. Herdyne talks about her struggle with the concept of Lose to Win when she had to manage the household when her husband had to go for a Ph.D. It led her to commit to a strict diet to get fit. Here, Brandi also talks about how commitment is not a feeling but an agreement you make to become better. Brandi's advice to anyone grieving is to ditch their story and old beliefs. She believes there's power in having somebody else hold you accountable – a physical fitness trainer takes you out of the comfort zone that restrains you from getting fit. We are destined from the time of Adam, a gardener, to cultivate spirits just like a gardener grows plants. Towards the close of the episode, Brandi reminds us that our word is our wand and that we need to master our emotions to become mentally and physically healthy. Listen in, for there's a lot of wisdom in their words!   About Our Guest Brandi Harvey is the founder of Beyond Her, an active wellness brand for women of color. She believes women should eat well, give a damn and move their bodies daily. Committed to teaching women how to care for their mind, body and spirit, Brandi is recognized as both a national and international speaker.    Episode Quotes “Life is not perfect, but the requirement of living it is.” - Herdyne [00:43] “People can't heal because they are afraid to be still and deal with the emotion.” - Herdyne [15:49] “Commitment is not a feeling. It's an agreement. “- Brandi [35:07] “Every time the muscle breaks down, when you're working out it is building it back up so that you can see more growth and development in your body. It's the same thing about your own life.” - Brandi [36:46] “When you have a desire for more, you're willing to get pushed out of your comfort zone.” - Brandi [47:13] “Be consistent and don't allow the weeds in your life to suffocate you like they do in the garden.” - Herdyne [52:15]   Redefining Grief Pearls of Wisdom, P.O.W., Questions What have you learned about yourself since redefining the grief in your life? [57:33] I've learned that I'm worthy and that I'm deserving of this big life. I spent so much time trying to downplay myself and fit into a box that other people thought, the expectations that they have for me, and I think I'm redefining the grief of my own life of losing the wind of shedding the old beliefs of leaving some things, some people behind, and know that I am deserving of this big life that God has promised me.   If today was your last day on earth, what would be your five words or less? [58:21] I lived it all the way.   What's that song that gets you through? [59:33]  Sounds of blackness - I believe.   Episode Time-Stamps [05:56] –Herdyne introduces Brandi [08:21] –Herdyne talks about her first podcast [13:05] –Brandi’s shift in life [18:26] –Brandi shares her truth [22:57] –Healthy goodbyes [25:36] – Lose to win [34:10] –Commitment is an agreement to become better [39:36] –Ditching old beliefs [42:35] –Talks about comfort food and lifestyle [50:16] – Adam a gardener [52:58] –Brandi’s freedom class Reference Links YouTube link to Brandi’s favorite song: Sounds of blackness - I believe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEY7vxjuuBA Book: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/breakthrough-sold-separately-brandi-harvey/1133935795   Connect with Brandi Website: https://beyondher.co/about/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brandi-harvey-4784b819/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/iambrandiharvey/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/IAmBrandiHarvey This episode is brought to you by our supportive, informative, and complimentary Grief Crusader Community. About Brandi Harvey Brandi believes our personal freedom lies beyond the edges of our limits so we should eat well, give a damn and move our bodies daily. Committed to teaching women how to care for and preserve their mind, body and spirit, she understands that women are pushed to the limit in their careers, family and everyday lives. Therefore, the need for women to restore themselves by creating daily rituals and spiritual practices is vital. As a former high school educator and executive director to the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation, Brandi spent the majority of her career serving children and families within the United States and around the globe. Answering her life calling as a wellness teacher, Brandi launched Beyond Her – a holistic lifestyle brand helping women of color reconnect to their internal power to heal and transform their mind, body and spirit. The Process of Healing In order to write Breakthrough Sold Separately, Brandi had to go through the process of healing herself first. She had to uncover the things she’d suppressed for years, and then get over the shame she had around being the daughter of a mega-star and still having things to deal with and heal from. Tune into the podcast to hear about Brandi’s realization and how she was able to heal.  The Backstory on Breakthrough Sold Separately Brandi opens the book by talking about her father, Steve Harvey, releasing her from her position as Executive Director of the Steve and Marjorie Harvey Foundation. And I asked her if before that happened she’d been in what I’d call a boat of mediocrity.  She said this:“I was. I knew that I didn’t want to be there. You know what it’s like when you don’t want to be doing something, right? You’re planning trips while at work, you’ve got Amazon open and you’re doing everything that’s not your job.” Brandi then recalled how she had lost the spark she’d once had for the role and knew it was time to leave. “I was stuck in a position that was not my vision. It was somebody else’s vision, and I knew God was calling me higher.” – Brandi Harvey  Now, Brandi also spoke candidly about how she received notice that she’d been fired. Listen now so you can hear all about it in her words.   The Mountaintop Experience After receiving notice that she’d been terminated, Brandi didn’t know what she was going to do, but thought it might be time to write a book.  “I was stuck on what to write about,” Brandi said, “and thought my breakthrough would come with a cocktail on the beach. God had other plans, and instead of the beach, I ended up in Boone, North Carolina on a silent retreat.” After five days in silence, Brandi emerged with a eureka moment and realized it wasn’t just about writing a book – well, yes, that was part of it – but there was more God was calling her to do. The Process of Transformation “So often we attach ourselves to positions because we want to be validated by people.” – Brandi Harvey  For years, Brandi didn’t have a close relationship with her father. Instead, she was clinging to her position because it provided a closeness she thought she needed. “Me being fired,” she says, “was the best thing that could have happened for our relationship because it freed me from the need to want him to accept me. When I was working for him, I kept trying to prove myself, thinking that if I could win him over, he’d love me more.” “I had to learn that I had to start showing up for myself.” – Brandi Harvey  The thing is this: We owe ourselves silence because through silence our goals become clear. And when we’re clear on our purpose and what we’re here to do, everything shifts. When we surrender, all bets are off, and we do what we’re here to do.  To find out more about Brandi and Beyond Her, visit https://beyondher.co/. Redefining Wealth Rapid Wisdom Questions  And with that, let’s dig into Brandi’s responses to our Redefining Wealth Rapid Wisdom Questions.  Define Success: “Success for me is loving the woman I see in the mirror. Applauding her, loving her, telling her how good and fabulous and wonderful she is – to be able to say those things – that’s success. To honor the God in me and the God in other people and to know that God is everywhere and in all things – that’s success.”  Define Wealth in 3 Words or Less: “I am enough.” One Book that Has Redefined How You See Wealth: Breakthrough Sold Separately by Brandi Harvey  Fill-in the Blanks … “My name is ___ and the truth about wealth is ___”: “My name is Brandi and the truth about wealth is you have to define it for yourself every single day, every opportunity, every encounter. Seeing Myself Become My Best Self Brandi’s journey into health began when she went home for spring break her sophomore year of college. When she was home, her dad loving called her his “fluffy girl.” She remembers thinking, “What does fluffy mean?” And realized that it meant fat, overweight … you know the drill. When she got back to college, something clicked in her and she started working out. In the beginning though, Brandi worked out like so many of us do – she’d work out for 45 minutes and then reward herself with a treat, like a milkshake.  Eventually, Brandi started to correct this and started removing “unnecessary” things from her diet. Over time, she became vegan, and then became a spin instructor, then a certified trainer, and then a fitness competitor. To Brandi, her dad calling her “fluffy” wasn’t damaging to her self-esteem. Instead, it awakened the giant within. “Everybody has a giant inside of them. It just takes a nudge or a word for it to wake up. That’s what the word ‘fluffy’ was for me.” – Brandi Harvey  Brandi says, “At first, I wanted my father’s approval and for him to say I wasn’t fluffy. But then I realized, No, I want to be healthy and I want to live my life to the highest, fullest potential I possibly can.” That word and her decision have set Brandi on a path that’s taught her how to heal herself. Since then, she’s learned how to heal her body, mind and spirit, and says she’s in better health now at 35 than she was at 15. You Only Get One Body For many people, they’re like Brandi was in the beginning – they need a reward for working to earn something. But here’s the thing, you get one body – that’s it. God has blessed you with one temple to take care of. For many of us, when we hear the idea of our body as being a temple, and we equate it to sex. You know, “Be careful who you sleep with because your body is a temple.” You’ve probably heard that before or, “Don’t drink or smoke because your body is a temple.” But what we put into our body and how we maintain and care for our temple is equally as important, and it’s usually something that’s not talked about. Think about it like this, every Sunday after church, there’s either a bake sale, coffee hour or some type of non-healthy meal, right? Yet in church we’re praying for healing of our bodies, minds and aliments, and then the next thing we do is put crap into our bodies, the same crap that’s killing us. In other words, we’re praying for God to help us with our hypertension or diabetes or cancer – all preventable things – but then we don’t take the preventable measures because to do that requires us to do something different. It requires us to change something that’s not in our wheelhouse necessarily. The thing is, we know how to heal ourselves. We’ve just forgotten because we’ve also been taught we need a high protein diet, we need meat and we need calcium from milk and cheese. “What we are putting into our bodies has the ability to heal us or it has the ability to harm us and cause disease.” – Brandi Harvey Greatness Never Goes on Sale “You cannot get a discount on greatness – it never goes on sale.” – Brandi Harvey  Think about this the next time you see one of those insta-quick diets or weight loss solutions. You know the ones – the 8-minute abs or 14-day diet or 21-day challenge. These things are not going to solve your problem. Sure, you may lose weight, but you’ll gain it right back when something triggers you emotionally. Emotional weight, mental weight, spiritual weight – it’s all connected to your physical weight. “When I talk about losing weight, I’m not talking about shedding pounds to fit into skinny jeans. No, this is about shedding the weight of life.” – Brandi Harvey  Many of us want those quick-fixes, but until we make the switch in our mind that it’s not about the physical weight – it’s about what caused the weight – then we stay stagnant or we lose weight and then gain it back. The Beauty of Silence  Brandi started her health journey at 19 and now she’s 37. If anything, those 18 years have taught her that physical shape is only one part of the equation.  As she says, “Until I got my mind and spirit in shape, I had to distance myself and disconnect. I had to get silent. I had to get uncomfortable in order to find out who I really was, and I had to understand that I couldn’t live life for somebody else.” “Focus on your mental health – that’s when the total shift happens and your life opens up.” – Brandi Harvey  We owe ourselves silence because through silence, our goals become clear. And when we’re clear on our purpose and what we’re here to do, everything shifts. When we surrender, all bets are off, and we do what we’re here to do.  To find out more about Brandi and Beyond Her, visit https://beyondher.co/. “Everybody has the giant inside of them.” - Brandi Harvey Let me ask you something, and I want you to be honest. What’s the point of making a resolution if you aren’t going to keep it? Also, how do you expect to keep your resolution if you’re not fixing the root of the problem? For example, the most common New Year’s resolution is to get in shape. You can go to the gym, and lose the weight but that alone isn’t going to keep the weight off. Your fitness doesn’t start at the body. Like most things in life, it starts at the mind and soul. You need to analyze what got you overweight, to begin with. Is it from emotional eating? Do you have bad habits, like rewarding yourself with a milkshake when you do something good? On this episode of the Redefining wealth podcast, we are joined by my good friend, Brandi Harvey. You probably recognize her as the daughter of popular TV show host, Steve Harvey, but much more than that Brandi is a wellness advocate, teacher and profound public speaker. Recently she’s started her own company BEYOND HER, which is still in its infancy. Download this episode today to hear her amazing insights on one of the most important pillars: Fit. “Nothing is going to stop you but you.” - Brandi Harvey The Cliff Notes: If you want results, you have to do things you’ve never done before. Don’t be the skinniest person in the room, be the healthiest. Sometimes you just need a nudge or word to wake up your inner giant. You only get one body to take care of. Our bodies need to be loved, respected and cared for. A part of our journey is respecting our temple. Whatever we do in the dark, it shows up in the light. You have to change all of your habits if you want to see results. You can’t out train a bad diet. What we put into our bodies has the ability to heal us, or to harm us. Greatness never goes on sale, it’s always full price. You have to consider what caused the weight to get there in the first place. A quick fix never lasts, you have to find the root of the problem. Everything is connected: Mind, Body, and Soul. Make sure you have the mental capacity to handle the things you want. Take the time to reflect on your feelings. To get the things that you want, you have to do the things you’ve never done. You have to be alone for the spirit to talk to you. Every great person has had a mountaintop experience. Many people use their faith as a cop out. You can’t pray about it and then forget about it. Don’t be afraid to surrender. “You can’t get ready for your life. It’s happening right now.” - Brandi Harvey
