In this episode, I teamed up with NAACP Youth & College Division to visit Selma, Alabama for 55th anniversary of the Selma Jubilee. Selma and the Alabama Black Belt were the battlegrounds for the Voting Rights Movement that resulted in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Alabamians stood up and peacefully fought for the right to vote.  SNCC, SCLC, national churches and religious organizations, civil rights and labor organizations, and stars of the Movement supported the Alabama Voting Rights Movement. We  commemorate and thank them for their work, leadership and sacrifice.  Several presidential candidates were in attendance including former Vice President Joe Biden, Senator Amy Klobuchar, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Mayor Mike Bloomberg and Billionaire Tom Steyer. We had a chance to talk with NAACP Youth & College members from several universities speaking on many of their first experience cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge. I also had a chance to chat with President and CEO of the NAACP Derrick Johnson and newly elected Mayor of Talladega and youngest Mayor in the state of Alabama, Timothy Ragland. March is Women's History and 2020 is an election year, choosing our next book was a no brainer. Our March Book of the Month is One Person, No Vote by Carol Anderson.  In her New York Times bestseller White Rage, Carol Anderson laid bare an insidious history of policies that have systematically impeded black progress in America, from 1865 to our combustible present. With One Person, No Vote, she chronicles a related history: the rollbacks to African American participation in the vote since the 2013 Supreme Court decision that eviscerated the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Known as the Shelby ruling, this decision effectively allowed districts with a demonstrated history of racial discrimination to change voting requirements without approval from the Department of Justice. Focusing on the aftermath of Shelby, Anderson follows the astonishing story of government-dictated racial discrimination unfolding before our very eyes as more and more states adopt voter suppression laws. In gripping, enlightening detail she explains how voter suppression works, from photo ID requirements to gerrymandering to poll closures. And with vivid characters, she explores the resistance: the organizing, activism, and court battles to restore the basic right to vote to all Americans as the nation gears up for the 2018 midterm elections. With the Iowa caucuses less than two weeks away, the Democratic primary increasingly seems like a two-way contest between former Vice President Joe Biden and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. The latest polls show Biden leading in Iowa and Sanders leading nationally, and calls are getting louder for the lower-tier candidates to drop out and allow support to coalesce around the leaders. Despite failing to poll above 4% nationally, California billionaire and philanthropist Tom Steyer insists he still has a path to the nomination, citing relatively strong recent polls in Nevada and South Carolina. Analysts estimate that Steyer’s campaign has already spent over $100 million on radio, TV, and digital advertising since launching back in July. Mehdi Hasan talks to the candidate about what he’s getting for all that money, and whether it might be better spent on house and Senate races around the country.

This coming weekend could make traveling over Thanksgiving look like a picnic. Get ready, holiday travelers, because if you haven't already skipped town on the way to your Christmas or New Year's Eve destination you could be in for a brutal weekend of travel.  It didn't take long for President Trump to lash out over the extremely critical editorial from Christianity Today magazine, which called for Trump's impeachment and removal from office.  But evangelical Americans have showed little wavering in their support of Trump. Even as facial recognition cameras start popping up in more places, it turns out the software isn't every good at actually recognizing faces--especially if those faces are on people of color.   Fresh off of his performance at last night's Democratic presidential debate, we talk with billionaire Tom Steyer.......and ask him if he might be more effective spending his money to force Trump out of the White House in other ways. And the reviews for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker....well they're not good.  Which leads us to ask, why is it so difficult to produce a TV series or move franchise finale that people actually like? “Few, if any, of the Framers viewed the prospect of presidential impeachment with the unbridled horror common among intellectual leaders today. CEOs can be cashiered for “moral turpitude,” “unprofessional conduct,” and the like. Yet we've somehow managed to convince ourselves that the one job in America where you have to commit a felony to get fired is the one where you actually get nuclear weapons.” — Indispensable Remedy: The Broad Scope of the Constitution's Impeachment PowerCalls for impeachment are growing louder by the day. Billionaire Tom Steyer has garnered nearly 7 million signatures through the “Need to Impeach” campaign, and with Democrats about to retake a majority in the House, Rep. Maxine Waters is saying that impeachment proceedings should begin immediately.Much of this is partisan hype, and incoming Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has already signaled that she will rein in her colleagues' excesses. She recently commented that “when and if he breaks the law, that is when something like that would come up.” Allegations of campaign finance violations from Trump's hush-money payments to Stormy Daniels could fall into this category, but most experts see this is as a flimsy justification. However, there may still be valid reasons to use what James Madison called “the indispensable remedy” against Trump's abuses of the executive office. Pelosi's comments stem from a common misconception about impeachment that it can only be used when the law has been broken, when in fact it can be used to address a much wider range of “conduct unbecoming” to the Presidency.Gene Healy, a Vice President at the Cato Institute, is trying to dispel this and other myths about impeachment. Without making a specific case for impeaching Trump (with all the partisan pitfalls that would entail), Healy's latest white paper serves as a primer on the purpose, history, and scope of impeachment provisions. He concludes that the remedy is an important deterrent against the “incapacity, negligence, or perfidy of the Chief Magistrate.” He argues that impeachment has probably not been used often enough in the past 230 years when Presidents have exhibited these traits without technically breaking the law. Some of the Commander-in-Chief's tweets are a prime example.Healy is a leading critic of the “Cult of the Presidency,” which believes the office of the executive to be sacrosanct. The Founders would have abhorred the idea of the President being beyond reproach or — in the extreme case — removal from office. He joined me to discuss the Framers' intention with respect to impeachment. While most analyses are clouded with political bias and tribalism, Healy recognizes the danger in raising or lowering the bar for impeachment to suit the latest political winds. “What you think of Congress' impeachment power shouldn't depend on what you think of President Trump,” he writes, “Donald Trump isn't going to be the last president we have, so it's important to get this right.”We did our best to get it right. You be the judge.
