When I saw the viral clips from Piers Morgan's show - featuring State of Tel Aviv and Beyond friend and regular guest, FDD Senior Fellow, Jonathan Conricus debating Mehdi Hasan - I could not resist. Jonathan and I spoke Sunday morning about what went down during that raucous exchange, which is more than television theatrics. Conricus has emerged as one of the most powerful and articulate spokespeople globally addressing issues arising regarding the Israel-Hamas war as well as regional issues. He has deep experience in the military and a gift for explaining complex issues in a way that makes them accessible. And, unlike Mehdi, he never loses his cool. We spend most of our time today speaking about the IDF operation in Gaza City and Conricus explains why he believes that it is the correct course of action for Israel at this time, in spite of the fact that the operation imperils the lives of the remaining hostages held by Hamas. It's hard to keep up, I know. But it struck me that we are at a critical nodal point regarding Hamas, Gaza and the hostages and merited a quick rundown. Given what's going on - this discussion is a quickie. The issue of media handling of issues relating to Israel is a longstanding interest of mine, as you are likely aware. And the tenor of Piers Morgan's show is also important, in my view. Like him or hate him he has millions of viewers globally and has maintained a strong focus on the Israel-Hamas war. Which means we have no choice but to pay attention to what goes down on his show. You can watch the full episode of the Conricus-Hasan debate at the link provided in the notes. Also there is a link to a previous podcast episode with Conricus in which we speak about the pros and cons of participating on Piers Morgan Uncensored.Show your support for STLV at buymeacoffee.com/stateoftelavivPodcast Notes* Podcast episode of STLV discussing how Piers Morgan treats the Israel-Hamas war and related issue* Episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored featuring Mehdi Hasan and Jonathan Conricus, below. He served in the IDF for 24 years, four of them as spokesman during the intense 11 days of the Guardian of the Walls Operation between Israel and Hamas. Now a reserve officer with the rank of Lt. Col., he is a sought-after speaker internationally and is frequently seen on major television news shows. This week, the world's leading genocide scholars declared Israel's war in Gaza to be genocidal - echoing arguments made by Israel's critics for months. With the exception of the United States, Israel's allies are beginning to distance themselves from the conflict. The UK's foreign secretary has expressed “outrage” over aid restrictions, after the UN warned Gaza is suffering a “man-made famine.” Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces growing division at home, within his government, his war cabinet, and across Israeli society - especially over the fate of the remaining hostages. As he tours conservative US podcasts to rally support, polls show that a coalition led by former PM Naftali Bennett could defeat him in an election. Tonight, Bennett joins the discussion with Piers Morgan on Israel's future and the war's impact. Then, Piers is joined by CEO of Zeteo, Mehdi Hasan, and former lieutenant colonel, IDF spokesman and senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, Jonathan Conricus, in a fiery debate. In this episode we talk about two dramatic portrayals of a seminal 2000 libel trial, the court case brought by Holocaust denier David Irving against American scholar Deborah Lipstadt: a contemporary UK television drama-documentary 'Holocaust on Trial' and the 2016 film Denial. We then consider the legacy of Irving, his reputation today, how fascists now see him, how they see the 2016 film, the planned republication of his work by Antelope Hill books, and how he is weirdly replicated in current 'rising star' internet Holocaust denier Darryl Cooper. We then consider our own coverage of Israel's genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza and the question of how to talk about genocide after the Nazi Holocaust. Our discussion also touches upon another of the 'guests' brought on by Jubilee to debate Mehdi Hasan in the recent edition of 'Surrounded'. We also briefly discuss the Sydney Sweeney jeans ad thing. For Nimer Sultany, a scholar of international law at SOAS University of London, this silence pointed to a glaring double standard, in which many scholars could rush to imply that the Palestinians had committed acts reminiscent of genocide, but be “unable to or unwilling to make the same charge against Israel, when Israel has committed much worse atrocities against the Palestinians since then.” “This shows that the early use of genocide was propagandistic and political in nature. It shows that they don't care in the same way about Palestinian civilians or Palestinian victims,” he said." Mehdi Hasan, a journalist renowned for confronting power directly and dismantling opponents in political debates, joined Posting Through It to reflect on his viral appearance on "Surrounded" — a YouTube debate show that recruited him to argue against 20 "far-right conservatives."Over nearly two hours, his opponents took turns sitting across from him and espousing racist bigotries, antisemitic conspiracy theories, and anti-democratic beliefs. When the cameras stopped rolling, Mehdi said one participant stood up and declared: "Left or Right, we all hate the Jews.""No one said a word," Mehdi recalled. The episode's explosive popularity (10.2 million views on YouTube alone) has reignited debates about "platforming" extremism and whether engaging with the far-right this way serves any constructive purpose. On this episode, we explore those criticisms with Mehdi, discuss his “hygiene tests” for debates, and explore why so many people who try to face off against the far-right end up failing.Links for Mehdi:* Check out Zeteo.com* Read “Win Every Argument: The Art of Debating, Persuading, and Public Speaking”* Watch “7 Debate Lessons YOU Can Learn From My Jubilee Video”* Follow @mehdirhasan on X and @mehdirhasan.bsky.social on BlueskyTransition Music: “WILL U STILL U” by Jeff RosenstockThrow a few bucks in our digital tip jar: https://tiptopjar.com/postingthroughitpod This is a public episode. President Trump fired the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics following a weak jobs report. On this week's On the Media, how the Trump administration is threatening government data. Plus, a viral YouTube channel raises questions about the meaning of political debate. [01:00] Host Brooke Gladstone situates President Trump's recent firing of the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics within a larger effort to discount facts that aren't politically convenient. Plus, Amy O'Hara, a professor at Georgetown's Massive Data Institute, on the importance of government data, and Andreas Georgiou, a scholar in statistics at Amherst College, on his years-long battle to defend accurate economics data in Greece.[12:34] Brooke speaks with Angelo Carusone, the president of Media Matters, a liberal watchdog group that follows and fact-checks right-wing outlets like Fox News, NewsMax, and the Tucker Carlson Network, about the group's fight for survival as it faces a deluge of lawsuits brought by Elon Musk's X. [28:22] Host Micah Loewinger delves into the meteoric rise of the YouTube channel Jubilee with technology and online culture journalist Taylor Lorenz, and the channel's mission of fostering “radical empathy” by hosting political debates between wildly opposing groups. He speaks with Mehdi Hasan, editor-in-chief of Zeteo, about his recent Jubilee debate with far right conservatives and how the channel is transforming the meaning of political debate. Plus, Stassia Underwood, a participant of one Jubilee debate, opens up about her experience on set. On episode 91, our hosts Angela Rye and Andrew Gillum bring on super-guest and renowned progressive journalist: Mehdi Hasan. Tiffany Cross is away this week but she sent us a report from the ground in the DRC. Mehdi Hasan was featured on a Jubilee debate where he (a proclaimed progressive) debated 20 “far-right” young people. The debate was shocking, participants called themselves fascists, and told Mehdi, a naturalized citizen, to “get out” of the country. Mehdi reflects on the debate, the surprise and trauma of it, and what it says (and doesn’t say) about modern conservatives. In addition, the hosts chat with him about redistricting (see below). Follow Mehdi Hassan’s work at https://zeteo.com/ Gerrymandering, the unfair drawing of electoral maps to benefit one’s own party, has been an issue for decades. Egged on by the Trump administration, we are now on the verge of an all-out gerrymandering war. Redistricting (redrawing maps) normally happens at the end of each decade. Trump demanded that Texas redraw their map now to add more Republican seats and the Texas GOP obliged. In response, Democratic state reps have fled Texas to prevent the new maps from being voted on, and governors of blue states like California and New York have threatened to change their state laws to allow more partisan gerrymandering in favor of Democrats. Tiffany Cross is meeting with the president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It's Casual Friday on the Majority Report: A pregnant woman in Tennessee is denied medical care under the state's Medical Ethics Defense Act—because she was unmarried, which conflicted with the clinic's so-called “Christian values.” We're joined by Zeteo News Editor-in-Chief Mehdi Hasan to discuss the mass starvation in Gaza, the ongoing Epstein cover-up, and his recent appearance on Jubilee's Surrounded. In the Fun Half: Andrew Cuomo appears on CNBC to reflect on losing the primary—and lays out a firm policy agenda focused on fearmongering, from anti-Semitism panic to Red Scare tactics. The chairman of the FCC openly calls for a media “course correction”—a not-so-subtle threat to align with the Trump agenda or risk cancellation. South Park takes a big swing at Trump's little thing as Tim Pool clutches his pearls. All that and more plus IMs. The Congress switchboard number is (202) 224-3121. This week we dive into why platforming fascists is always a terrible idea, using Mehdi Hasan's recent Jubilee debate as our cautionary tale. We examine how these staged confrontations accomplish nothing except providing content for right-wing sites and turning wannabe fascists into MAGA heroes. We break down the employment reality behind Connor Estelle's firing (spoiler: it's called "at-will employment," not "cancellation") and marvel at how quickly the grift machine turned his unemployment into a nearly $40K GoFundMe payday. Then we turn to the real story everyone's trying to avoid: Trump's massive pedophile coverup and the GOP's desperate scramble to shut down any discussion of the Epstein files. We watch Mike Johnson literally shut down the House rather than allow a vote on transparency, while Trump pulls out his greatest hits of Obama derangement and treason accusations to distract his base.Recorded live from the Cornfield Resistance, where stupid Watergate just keeps getting stupider.Link for this episode: Catch Driftglass and Digby on The Bradcast 7/23/25: https://bradblog.com/?p=15450 Stay in Touch! On this week's episode, I'm rejoined by Puck media correspondent Julia Alexander to discuss the absurdities of Jubilee. You might not recognize the name of the company but you've probably seen some of their clips; most recently, Mehdi Hasan went up against 20 self-described far-right conservatives that resulted in at least one of the participants losing his job after he proudly declared himself an autocrat and downplayed Nazi crimes during the Holocaust. Is this brand of debate spectacle lucrative? Maybe! Is it bad for society? Undoubtedly. We examine why on this week's episode. If you enjoyed it, please share it with a friend!
Mehdi Hasan, editor-in-chief and CEO of Zeteo, columnist for The Guardian and former MSNBC host, talks about his experience debating 20 far-right conservatives on the YouTube series "Surrounded," plus news related to the Jeffrey Epstein frenzy, the NYC mayoral race and more.

To hear more, visit www.thebulwark.comTim, Sarah, and JVL talk about Epstein, of course—particularly President Donald Trump's aggressive attempts to deflect attention toward former President Barack Obama by suggesting Obama committed treason. They delve into the dynamics within the MAGA base, analyzing their cognitive dissonance on issues such as Epstein's connection with Trump and conspiracy theories. They highlight the different segments within Trump's base and discuss how conspiracy theories and misinformation shape their political reality. The conversation then turns to the alarming rise of fascist and authoritarian rhetoric among younger conservative activists, emphasizing how Trump's influence has emboldened extreme ideologies while social media algorithms accelerate radicalization and misinformation.Show notes:* JVL and Tim watch clips from Mehdi Hasan's appearance on Juliblee.* Tim's conversation with Mehdi Hasan after his appearance on Jubilee. In clips that went viral, Mehdi Hasan, editor-in-chief and CEO of Zeteo, columnist for The Guardian and former MSNBC host, debated 20 far-right conservatives on Jubilee's YouTube series "Surrounded." He talks about the experience and why he's still not sure it was worth it.

It's Monday, and allegedly a fun day. First, Tulsi Gabbard tries to worm her way back into Trump's good graces with a fresh Obama conspiracy theory, while Trump shares an AI-generated video of Obama being “arrested” by FBI agents. In an especially desperate attempt to shift attention away from Epstein headlines, Trump threatens to block a deal for the Washington Commanders' new stadium—unless they bring back the team's old name. Then we're joined by journalist Matt Duss to discuss his new piece in Foreign Policy, “The Biden Administration Lied About Gaza. It's Time to Hold Them Accountable.” Later, Candace Rondeaux, author of Putin's Sledgehammer, joins us to break down Russia's war in Ukraine and the Wagner Group's role in meddling in U.S. elections. In the Fun Half we watch Mehdi Hasan debate 20 far-right panelists in Jubilee's Surrounded series. Andrew Cuomo left his home in Westchester Country to visit Long Island to raise money for his New York City mayoral race and someone was kind enough to secretly record his speech. Turns out it was voter turnout that caused his defeat by 12 points. Fox News does some "embedded journalism" by sending a reporter to Central Florida for a puff piece that covers "consensual interactions" like finger printing workers for a national immigrant data base.
