Political debates are taking over the internet. On this week's On the Media, hear how one viral Youtube channel is reshaping political discourse. Plus, why the Trump administration is pressuring museums, monuments, and even parks to rewrite history.[01:00] Host Micah Loewinger delves into the meteoric rise of the YouTube channel Jubilee with technology and online culture journalist Taylor Lorenz, and the channel's mission of fostering “radical empathy” by hosting political debates between wildly opposing groups. He speaks with Mehdi Hasan, editor-in-chief of Zeteo, about his recent Jubilee debate with far right conservatives and how the channel is transforming the meaning of political debate. Plus, Stassia Underwood, a participant of one Jubilee debate, opens up about her experience on set.[25:17] Host Brooke Gladstone sits down with Bryan Stevenson, public interest lawyer and founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, a human rights organization based in Montgomery, Alabama, to talk about the Trump Administration's war on museums, especially those that deal with our nation's history of racism. Chris Cuomo responds directly to YouTube comments and viewer pushback in a holiday-week comments episode, addressing reactions to his takes on rage bait, Trump, Venezuela, due process, and whether constant outrage actually helps Democrats win power. He explains why condemning Trump at maximum volume may feel righteous but often fails politically, and why selective outrage — especially around war, deportation, and national security — undermines credibility across party lines. Chris also answers comments about his clashes with media figures like Don Lemon, Jim Acosta, and Mehdi Hasan, reflects on how algorithms reward anger over judgment, and explains why he refuses to build a personal brand around hate or tribal loyalty. He closes with a Christmas message about generosity, independence, and resisting the pressure to let politics turn every disagreement into a moral war. Send us a textOne sentence can change the temperature of a room: “Anti‑Zionism is anti‑Semitism.” We revisit a gripping 2019 Intelligence Squared debate featuring Melanie Phillips and Einat Wilf for the motion, and Ilan Pappé and Mehdi Hasan against it, to examine how history, identity, and power collide over those seven words. The case for the motion traces a familiar pattern from medieval scapegoating to modern rhetoric, arguing that efforts to delegitimize Israel recycle classic antisemitic tropes under a respectable gloss. The case against insists that anti‑Zionism is a political and moral critique—of occupation, dispossession, and unequal rights—not a blanket hatred of Jews, and points to Jewish and Israeli anti‑Zionist traditions, Christian Zionist antisemitism, and the right to scrutinize any state.Across sharp exchanges and audience questions, we unpack definitions, the Nakba's legacy, equal‑citizenship vs nation‑state models, IHRA controversies, UN attention, and where criticism slides into bigotry. The debate doesn't offer easy answers; it forces honest accounting. Is Israel a state for all its citizens or a nation privileging one group? Are accusations of apartheid and ethnic cleansing rigorous analysis or slander? Do double standards exist, and if so, where—and why? After Oct 7, these questions feel painfully urgent. We reflect on grief, solidarity, and responsibility: how to hold rising far‑right antisemitism in view while reckoning with Palestinian dispossession; how to critique policy without dehumanizing people; how personal histories shape our stance. Long‑form debate slows us down, restores nuance, and asks better questions. If you value conversations that resist easy labels and reward careful listening, hit follow, share with a friend, and leave a review telling us where you landed—and what changed your mind. In this video, Don takes a closer look at Megyn Kelly's very rough week. It started with her baffling attempt to downplay Jeffrey Epstein's crimes by insisting it wasn't “actually pedophilia.” People were left wondering what on earth she meant, because the victims were children. Full stop. Any effort to soften what Epstein did is not only absurd, it's dangerous. But Megyn didn't stop there. She then walked straight into a joke she once mocked Mehdi Hasan for, accidentally becoming the punchline of her own hypocrisy. Don breaks down what she said, why it was so disturbing, and how the whole saga exposes a deeper pattern in conservative media of rewriting reality when the truth is inconvenient. Guardian US writer Adam Gabbatt and columnist Mehdi Hasan explore how Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani has come from nowhere to the brink of becoming mayor of New York City
In this special episode of The Listening Post, we examine the rise of New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani. A democratic socialist and outspoken critic of Israel's genocide in Gaza, Mamdani has faced a barrage of hostility from US mainstream media, the political donor class and the democratic establishment alike. The press has been particularly relentless, questioning not only Mamdani's progressive policies but also his identity as a Muslim and an immigrant. But Mamdani is a digital native with an international following and a double-digit lead in the polls. His victory would reverberate far beyond New York City, shaking up the Democratic Party nationwide. This episode exposes how the media and the wealthy political class attempted to discredit Mamdani and how, against all odds, he turned their attacks into the foundation of a movement. As media figures reacted to the assassination of right-wing commentator Charlie Kirk last month, a movement to purge those critical of President Trump and his MAGA movement found success. The most prominent censorship case came when ABC, bowing to pressure from the head of the Federal Communications Commission, pulled late-night host Jimmy Kimmel off the air for his anti-MAGA remarks during his opening monologue. This clampdown on speech critical of Trump comes amid a broader attempt to reshape mainstream media in the right's image. In this episode, senior reporter Alex Kane discusses the media's right-wing turn with Karen Attiah—a journalist fired by the Washington Post for her comments following Kirk's assassination—and Mehdi Hasan, a former MSNBC host and founder of independent news outlet Zeteo. They spoke about whether Kimmel's removal signifies full-blown autocracy, the takeover of TikTok by pro-Trump and pro-Netanyahu billionaires, and the role of independent media in this moment. In this episode we talk about two dramatic portrayals of a seminal 2000 libel trial, the court case brought by Holocaust denier David Irving against American scholar Deborah Lipstadt: a contemporary UK television drama-documentary 'Holocaust on Trial' and the 2016 film Denial. We then consider the legacy of Irving, his reputation today, how fascists now see him, how they see the 2016 film, the planned republication of his work by Antelope Hill books, and how he is weirdly replicated in current 'rising star' internet Holocaust denier Darryl Cooper. We then consider our own coverage of Israel's genocide of the Palestinians in Gaza and the question of how to talk about genocide after the Nazi Holocaust. Our discussion also touches upon another of the 'guests' brought on by Jubilee to debate Mehdi Hasan in the recent edition of 'Surrounded'. We also briefly discuss the Sydney Sweeney jeans ad thing. For Nimer Sultany, a scholar of international law at SOAS University of London, this silence pointed to a glaring double standard, in which many scholars could rush to imply that the Palestinians had committed acts reminiscent of genocide, but be “unable to or unwilling to make the same charge against Israel, when Israel has committed much worse atrocities against the Palestinians since then.” “This shows that the early use of genocide was propagandistic and political in nature. It shows that they don't care in the same way about Palestinian civilians or Palestinian victims,” he said." On today's episode, hosts Candice Lim and Kate Lindsay are joined by Slate staff writer Aymann Ismail to discuss the controversial YouTube channel, Jubilee. A video of political commentator Mehdi Hasan debating 20 far-right republicans has gone viral, but as Ismail argues in his piece for Slate, it also crossed a line. President Trump fired the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics following a weak jobs report. On this week's On the Media, how the Trump administration is threatening government data. Plus, a viral YouTube channel raises questions about the meaning of political debate. [01:00] Host Brooke Gladstone situates President Trump's recent firing of the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics within a larger effort to discount facts that aren't politically convenient. Plus, Amy O'Hara, a professor at Georgetown's Massive Data Institute, on the importance of government data, and Andreas Georgiou, a scholar in statistics at Amherst College, on his years-long battle to defend accurate economics data in Greece.[12:34] Brooke speaks with Angelo Carusone, the president of Media Matters, a liberal watchdog group that follows and fact-checks right-wing outlets like Fox News, NewsMax, and the Tucker Carlson Network, about the group's fight for survival as it faces a deluge of lawsuits brought by Elon Musk's X. [28:22] Host Micah Loewinger delves into the meteoric rise of the YouTube channel Jubilee with technology and online culture journalist Taylor Lorenz, and the channel's mission of fostering “radical empathy” by hosting political debates between wildly opposing groups. He speaks with Mehdi Hasan, editor-in-chief of Zeteo, about his recent Jubilee debate with far right conservatives and how the channel is transforming the meaning of political debate. Plus, Stassia Underwood, a participant of one Jubilee debate, opens up about her experience on set. On episode 91, our hosts Angela Rye and Andrew Gillum bring on super-guest and renowned progressive journalist: Mehdi Hasan. Tiffany Cross is away this week but she sent us a report from the ground in the DRC. Mehdi Hasan was featured on a Jubilee debate where he (a proclaimed progressive) debated 20 “far-right” young people. The debate was shocking, participants called themselves fascists, and told Mehdi, a naturalized citizen, to “get out” of the country. Mehdi reflects on the debate, the surprise and trauma of it, and what it says (and doesn’t say) about modern conservatives. In addition, the hosts chat with him about redistricting (see below). Follow Mehdi Hassan’s work at https://zeteo.com/ Gerrymandering, the unfair drawing of electoral maps to benefit one’s own party, has been an issue for decades. Egged on by the Trump administration, we are now on the verge of an all-out gerrymandering war. Redistricting (redrawing maps) normally happens at the end of each decade. Trump demanded that Texas redraw their map now to add more Republican seats and the Texas GOP obliged. In response, Democratic state reps have fled Texas to prevent the new maps from being voted on, and governors of blue states like California and New York have threatened to change their state laws to allow more partisan gerrymandering in favor of Democrats. Tiffany Cross is meeting with the president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She’ll talk with him ab0ut the civil conflict in the DRC and foreign exploitation of the country’s mineral resources. TAKE OUR SURVEY, WIN A PRIZE! It's Casual Friday on the Majority Report: A pregnant woman in Tennessee is denied medical care under the state's Medical Ethics Defense Act—because she was unmarried, which conflicted with the clinic's so-called “Christian values.” We're joined by Zeteo News Editor-in-Chief Mehdi Hasan to discuss the mass starvation in Gaza, the ongoing Epstein cover-up, and his recent appearance on Jubilee's Surrounded. In the Fun Half: Andrew Cuomo appears on CNBC to reflect on losing the primary—and lays out a firm policy agenda focused on fearmongering, from anti-Semitism panic to Red Scare tactics. The chairman of the FCC openly calls for a media “course correction”—a not-so-subtle threat to align with the Trump agenda or risk cancellation. South Park takes a big swing at Trump's little thing as Tim Pool clutches his pearls. All that and more plus IMs. The Congress switchboard number is (202) 224-3121. It's Monday, and allegedly a fun day. First, Tulsi Gabbard tries to worm her way back into Trump's good graces with a fresh Obama conspiracy theory, while Trump shares an AI-generated video of Obama being “arrested” by FBI agents. In an especially desperate attempt to shift attention away from Epstein headlines, Trump threatens to block a deal for the Washington Commanders' new stadium—unless they bring back the team's old name. Then we're joined by journalist Matt Duss to discuss his new piece in Foreign Policy, “The Biden Administration Lied About Gaza. It's Time to Hold Them Accountable.” Later, Candace Rondeaux, author of Putin's Sledgehammer, joins us to break down Russia's war in Ukraine and the Wagner Group's role in meddling in U.S. elections. In the Fun Half we watch Mehdi Hasan debate 20 far-right panelists in Jubilee's Surrounded series. Andrew Cuomo left his home in Westchester Country to visit Long Island to raise money for his New York City mayoral race and someone was kind enough to secretly record his speech. Turns out it was voter turnout that caused his defeat by 12 points. Fox News does some "embedded journalism" by sending a reporter to Central Florida for a puff piece that covers "consensual interactions" like finger printing workers for a national immigrant data base.
