Former Governor John Kasich has spent his life bringing people together to tackle tough problems, guided by a deep belief that we all have a role to play in making the world a little better than we found it. As a former Ohio governor and four-time New York Times bestselling author, it's his deep commitment to faith and building community that matters most to him. Today, John Kasich shares why he believes the antidote to our cultural division isn't politics — it's purpose. Hear John share about his working-class roots, how losing his parents to a drunk driver deepened his faith, and why he believes real change always begins from the bottom up. He also reveals the stories behind his new book Heaven Help Us, which highlights unsung heroes whose love, compassion, and faith are quietly transforming communities across the country. My friends, whether you consider yourself a Republican, Democrat, Independent or something completely different, this conversation is for you. There have been major developments in the ongoing lawsuit against Ohio State University by sexual assault victims of former OSU team doctor Richard Strauss.
Ohio is in the early stages of a major fight over property taxes. Thanks largely to rapidly rising home values, property taxes have jumped on average about 25–30% in recent years. Homeowners are mad, especially those on fixed incomes who have no plans to move and cash in on their home's equity.
Once labeled a cow-town, known mainly for its college football team, Columbus is asserting itself as a major regional and national city and the growth projections are kind of startling. But is Columbus ready?
In this unfiltered episode of OnlyLands, a full Badlands Media panel gathers for nearly three hours of irreverent banter and intense debate. The crew starts with a rundown of the chaos surrounding Epstein narratives, questioning why the DOJ insists there's no credible client list and unpacking the fallout across the movement. They analyze Trump's dismissive remarks and argue whether the timing of the memo release was designed to provoke outrage or distraction. The conversation dives into parallel theories about blackmail as leverage over global leaders and whether hidden evidence will ever surface. In between serious discussions, there's no shortage of humor—roasts about fashion choices, references to Mount Rushmore as a misogynistic symbol, and a nostalgic watch of Dave Chappelle's “Race Draft.” The group explores why people still treat old Q drops like gospel, what “transparency” really means, and how moral lines are drawn when fighting systemic corruption. With digressions into John Kasich's pancake eating, Biden impressions, and the ethics of political blackmail, this episode balances skepticism, dark comedy, and genuine frustration over the illusions propping up American institutions.

If you like a good story, we think you'll like this episode. This week, we're honored to welcome John Kasich—a national leader, lifelong public servant, and gifted storyteller. Throughout his career, he's met thousands of people, and he's here to share just a few of the stories that have stayed with him. As the 69th Governor of Ohio (2011–2019), Gov. Kasich led with a focus on unity and problem-solving. He rose to national prominence during his 2016 presidential run and continues to serve today through his work with the Kasich Company, his role as a political analyst for NBC and MSNBC, and as the author of several New York Times bestsellers. His latest book, Heaven Help Us: How Faith Communities Inspire Hope, Strengthen Neighborhoods, and Build the Future, is the heart of this week's conversation. John shares some of his personal journey—including how the sudden loss of his parents in a car accident became a life-altering moment. He also invites us into the deeply moving stories from his new book—stories of ordinary people in churches, synagogues, and mosques doing extraordinary work to serve their neighbors. These aren't just heartwarming accounts; they're powerful reminders of how faith can drive tangible, lasting change. This conversation moves quickly—so we encourage you to grab a copy of Heaven Help Us and spend time with these stories yourself. The Ohio Democratic Party has a new chair. Amy Acton is building a campaign to run for Ohio governor. And everyone is waiting for Sherrod Brown to announce his plans.
Heaven Help Us: How Faith Communities Inspire Hope, Strengthen Neighborhoods, and Build the Future—a collection of inspiring profiles of individuals working to make a difference with the help of their faith communities—is podcast host Daniel Paisner's fifth collaboration with former Ohio governor John Kasich. The collaboration goes back to the very first book the two wrote together—the 2006 New York Times best-seller Stand for Something: The Battle for America's Soul—as Gov. Kasich was completing his ninth term as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio's 12th district. They would go on to write about the governor's long-time Bible study group, about his 2016 presidential campaign, and a primer on what it takes to live a life of purpose and meaning, encouraging readers to be the change they wanted to see in this world. In Heaven Help Us, Gov. Kasich continues to explore the themes that have defined his public life, as he shines a powerful light on a group of extraordinary people who are working selflessly to transform their communities—work that is being magnified by their churches, synagogues and mosques. “My goal here is to get readers to think outside themselves for a bit, to think bigger than themselves,” he writes. “To open their hearts to what's possible instead of what's impossible.” Learn more about John Kasich: Website Instagram Twitter Facebook It's Up to Us Every Other Monday Two Paths Courage Is Contagious Please support the sponsors who support our show: Ritani Jewelers Daniel Paisner's Balloon Dog Daniel Paisner's SHOW: The Making and Unmaking of a Network Television Pilot Heaven Help Us by John Kasich Unforgiving: Lessons from the Fall by Lindsey Jacobellis Film Movement Plus (PODCAST) | 30% discount Libro.fm (ASTOLDTO) | 2 audiobooks for the price of 1 when you start your membership Film Freaks Forever! podcast, hosted by Mark Jordan Legan and Phoef Sutton Everyday Shakespeare podcast A Mighty Blaze podcast The Writer's Bone Podcast Network Misfits Market (WRITERSBONE) | $15 off your first order Film Movement Plus (PODCAST) | 30% discount Wizard Pins (WRITERSBONE) | 20% discount

Former governor John Kasich has been a lot of things: US presidential candidate, governor, political commentator, congressman. And throughout his career, he witnessed faith communities of all religions come together and support not only each other but also their communities at-large. His new book, Heaven Help Us, reflects his observation of this dynamic and the ways faith communities are uniquely positioned to effect change in a broken society. The former governor also shares his takes on health care reform, how losing his parents in a car accident brought him to faith, how he fared after losing the presidential candidacy, and how to quench the fear of impending political chaos. If you find yourself looking around your community or your country or the world and you think, What can one person, church, or community do to change something so overwhelming?, this conversation is for you. Former Ohio Governor John Kasich believes the power of faith is not just a tool for personal happiness and fulfillment, but a great resource to help build communities and solve some of our most pressing concerns like poverty, health care, and building strong neighborhoods. Not content to leave civic involvement to government agencies, Kasich, who's also a former Fox News Channel contributor and GOP presidential candidate, sees religious institutions as the best hope for trench warfare against the evils of our time. On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, Kasich discusses his book, "Heaven Help Us," and how faith groups don't need government to strengthen communities; only a person with a great idea whose willing to work, like the man who was inspired by his meeting with Mother Theresa and went home and delivered groceries to a couple of homes, and now is feeding over a half a million daily. Good works are infectious. And it's the kind of virus that brings positive changes all around. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

“I never thought I would have a career in the television business,” writes podcast guest Art Bell, the founding father of the Comedy Central network and the longtime president of Court TV. While at Comedy Central, which had its origins at HBO as “The Comedy Channel,” Art helped to launch the careers of Bill Maher and Jon Stewart, and to provide a platform for up-and-coming comedians. He also found the time to co-author a humor book with his network colleagues—Web Sightings: A Collection of Websites We'd Like to See. At Court TV, he oversaw the network's daily live courtroom coverage and the production of hundreds of hours of original true-crime television series, documentaries, and movies, becoming a guiding force behind one of the most successful brand evolutions in cable television. He credits his time at Court TV with helping him to master the mechanics of storytelling. “The challenge,” he said in a recent interview, “was to find the pacing that worked for the story, to include twists, exploit red herrings, and most of all, to make sure the audience stayed riveted and came back after the commercial break.” Art's first novel, What She's Hiding, was just published by Ulysses Press, which had previously published his memoir, Constant Comedy: How I Started Comedy Central and Lose My Sense of Humor. In addition to his books, he has published short stories, non-fiction and satire in several journals, including Lowestoft Chronicle, The Ocotillo Review, and Aethlon: The Journal of Sports Literature. "Comedy writers learn early on that we have a high degree of anonymity," writes podcast guest Alan Zweibel in his memoir Laugh Lines: My Life Helping Funny People Be Funnier. "Our words are spoken publicly by others who often have famous faces. Or by unknown people on their way to having famous faces." As one of the founding writers on Saturday Night Live, Alan's words were given voice by a cast of virtual unknowns, all on their way to becoming famous faces, eventually earning worldwide acclaim as some of the most iconic comic performers of their generation. Over the course of his 50-year career, he has penned jokes for dozens of Borscht Belt comedians and written for some of SNL's most memorable characters (such as Gilda Radner's "Roseanne Rosannadanna," John Belushi's "Samurai," and Garrett Morris's "Chico Escuela"), and helped to craft SNL producer Lorne Michaels's now-legendary appeal to invite the Beatles to appear on the show for the standard artist fee of $3,000. Alan is the recipient of five Emmy Awards for his work in television, which in addition to SNL also includes "It's Garry Shandling's Show" (which he co-created and produced), "The Late Show with David Letterman," and "Curb Your Enthusiasm." He is the author of 11 books, including the 2006 Thurber Prize-winning novel The Other Shulman, and Bunny Bunny: Gilda Radner—A Sort of Romantic Comedy, and six off-Broadway plays. He also collaborated with Billy Crystal on the Tony Award-winning play "700 Sundays," and with Martin Short on his Broadway hit "Fame Becomes Me," and co-wrote the screenplays for the films "Dragnet," "North," "The Story of Us," and "Here Today." He joins us on the podcast to reflect on a singular career as one of our leading comedy writers and humorists—and a wickedly funny body of work that has earned him an honorary Ph.D. from the State University of New York, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Writers Guild of America, East. Chuck opens with an analysis of growing global tensions, including armed conflict between India and Pakistan, and the power vacuum created by America's retreat from its traditional leadership role. He discusses Joe Biden's recent BBC comments on foreign affairs and the potential for Vladimir Putin to test NATO's Article 5 commitment in the Baltics, suggesting that increased global conflict may be on the horizon as China and Russia fill the void left by the United States. Then he's joined by the author of the new book "Heaven Help Us" and former Ohio Governor John Kasich, who offers candid insights on the lost art of political compromise and consensus-building. Kasich discusses the toxic partisanship exemplified by the Obama/Christie hug controversy, shares his perspective on healthcare reform, and explores how faith can inform governance without violating church-state separation. The conversation covers the prospects for the 2026 and 2028 elections, Ohio's political landscape, and the need for spiritual renewal in American culture. Kasich offers sharp criticism of both Trump's approach to tariffs and Biden's presidency, which he characterizes as a failure due to insulation from contrarian views. Finally Chuck responds to listeners' questions in the "Ask Chuck" segment, addressing questions about increasing the size of the House of Representatives, how organizations earn the "non-partisan" label, and whether the national debt will trigger economic catastrophe.Timeline:00:00 Introduction03:15 Armed conflict between India and Pakistan07:30 We see more conflict when the U.S. is in retreat09:00 If America doesn't play the role of world police, Russia and China will11:00 We're likely to see more conflict around the world13:35 Joe Biden weighs in on foreign affairs on BBC14:45 Putin likely to test article 5 in the Baltics16:45 Democrat loss was 10 years in the making21:45 John Kasich joins the Chuck Toddcast! 23:15 Why have we lost the art of politics and compromise? 25:45 The Obama/Chris Christie hug shouldn't have been a controversy 27:00 Government never finds a way to get money out of politics 29:05 Faith in democracy? 31:35 The next president has the opposite traits of the prior president 33:05 What will the country look for in the next president? 33:55 Advice for 2028 candidates? 35:15 Could the MAGA candidates become toxic in the primaries by 2026? 36:15 Vivek Ramaswamy's prospects in the Ohio governor's race? 37:30 Ohio isn't ruby red 39:45 Voters care less about issues and more about personal connection 41:00 The issues John Kasich would focus most on addressing 43:30 The healthcare system is broken 46:15 For profit hospitals are less profitable than non-profits 48:30 Healthcare stakeholders need to be forced to compromise 49:55 We need politicians that can build consensus, not just offer a plan 53:05 Integrating faith into governance without violating separation of church and state? 56:15 The social gospel changed the culture from an "I" environment to a "we" society 57:15 Local journalism is service journalism, national journalism is civics journalism 1:00:30 How do we move America past its "I" culture? 1:02:00 We need a spiritual renewal 1:02:45 Pope Francis could be remembered as the most important of the century 1:04:15 Trump's tariff implementation shows his inability to listen and win people over 1:06:45 We've never updated the design for our public education system 1:08:30 The education industrial complex resists reform 1:11:00 Biden's staff kept him insulated from hearing contrarian views 1:11:45 Biden's presidency was a failure 1:16:15 College football has been turned into the minor leagues1:20:20 Chuck's thoughts on the interview with John Kasich 1:21:50 Ask Chuck 1:22:00 How would increasing the size of the house of representatives work? 1:24:40 How do entities/organizations earn the label "non-partisan"? 1:29:00 Will the national debt cause economic catastrophe?(Timestamps may vary based on advertisements)

We're not ChatGPT.” Rachel joins us at a busy time on the collaboration front, as she celebrates the publication of four new titles this month—Tahini Baby, a collection of “veg-forward” Middle Eastern and Mediterranean-inspired recipes, written with television food personality Edin Grinshpan; The Wishbone Kitchen Cookbook, featuring seasonal recipes from celebrity chef and style curator Meredith Hayden; Living in Wisdom, a guide to peak living, from wellness educator Devi Brown; and, Playful by Design, a parenting primer on nurturing independent play, from Myriam Sandler, creator and founder of the Mothercould lifestyle platform. A new poll shows Trump has a 47% approval rating while 48% disapprove—a statistical tie—but that number is down 7 points from February. The poll's co-director, Bowling Green State University political science professor Robert Alexander, joins the show.
A slate of new articles analyzes Pope Francis through America's progressive-conservative polarization, but are they confusing political categories with theological ones? Surprising data show that Gen Z is returning to religion, and belief in an afterlife is on the rise, but what's the explanation? Are young people returning to the church to rebel against their secular parents? Former Ohio Governor John Kasich believes America is on the cusp of a spiritual revival, and his new book, “Heaven Help Us,” explores how religious institutions are leading the way. He talks to Skye about how God used tragedy to awaken his own faith, and why he thinks this present era of greed and cowardice will pass. Also this week—a bunny, a Boeing, and a Bible illustration. “Sometimes our own stories get snatched from us, hidden in darkness for years,” writes podcast guest Salwa Emerson, “until it's time to reclaim them.” Salwa is well-known to publishers as an author, editor and ghostwriter, specializing in memoirs, thought-leadership books, and book proposals. To hear her clients tell it, she has a way of bringing those stories out of hiding and into the light. She has collaborated with world-renowned chefs, professional athletes, reality television personalities, Oscar-winning actors, and Pulitzer Prize winners. Before turning to ghostwriting, she worked on the other side of the desk, for publishers such as St. Martin's Press and DK Publishing. Her most recent publication—The Conservative Environmentalist: Common Sense Solutions for a Sustainable Future, written with environmentalist Benji Backer—was hailed by former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger prior to publication as “an essential read that shows how protecting our natural resources and advancing America's national interests are mutually reinforcing goals.” Join us as Salwa shares her thoughts on helping to find an author's “voice”, the three clauses all ghostwriters should have in their contracts, and the best ways to engage with readers, fellow writers and potential clients. Last week, former Sen. Sherrod Brown announced the formation of the Dignity of Work Institute. The goal, he says, is to help Democrats and Republicans better understand the lives of American workers. It also keeps him in the spotlight as he considers whether to run for office again.
If you're a politician who wants to get elected, promising tax cuts is a popular strategy. Republican candidates for governor are doing just that, floating the idea to eliminate Ohio's income tax.
The Department of Government Efficiency, also known as DOGE, could be coming to Ohio. We discuss what that might look like with a panel of political observers.
