In this episode of the GovComms Podcast, host David Pembroke interviews Bob Jensen, a leading expert in crisis communication with over four decades of experience in emergency and disaster risk management. The episode dives into Jensen's extensive career, including his roles in the US Air Force, the State Department, and FEMA, as well as his work with international organizations like the World Bank. Jensen shares insights from his career, emphasizing the importance of having robust systems in place for effective crisis communication and the need for regular training and exercises to ensure preparedness.Jensen discusses the critical role of crisis communication in managing public perception, particularly in the face of disinformation. He introduces the concept of pre-bunking, where organisations anticipate and address potential disinformation before it spreads, and highlights the increasing use of AI by malicious actors to create deepfakes and spread false narratives. Jensen stresses the importance of understanding and countering these tactics, using technology to detect manipulated content, and developing clear, proactive communication strategies. The conversation also touches on the challenges of communicating the impacts of climate change and the necessity of making such information relatable and understandable for the public. Jensen emphasises the importance of empathy and respect in communication, particularly when addressing widespread issues like climate change. Hosted on Acast. We're giving over the whole of Episode 660 of Folk Roots Radio to a very engaging conversation with Canadian poet and singer-songwriter Bob Jensen. Bob Jensen has been writing poems and songs all his life – he also has some great stories to share. An artist who very much likes to keep busy, Bob Jensen released “Live In Australia” (which was recorded in Brisbane with Celtic guitarist Tony McManus) in 2020; and in 2021, he released “For The Sake Of The Song”, a ten song cover song collection. Bob Jensen was also the guiding light behind the 2022 release of an updated version of protest song “Which Side Are You On?”, by a group of artists under the name ‘Artists For Action'. Bob Jensen is about to release “The Blarney Session”, a solo spoken word performance recorded in Port Fairy, Australia. So, settle down and enjoy The Poetry and Music of Bob Jensen on Folk Roots Radio. Enjoy! If you like the artists you hear on this show and want to support them, don't just stream their music – BUY their music, and then you'll really make a difference to their income at a time when it is becoming much more difficult to make a living as a musician. Bob Jensen has written a book with Wes Jackson titled An Inconvenient Apocalypse: Environmental Collapse, Climate Crisis, and the Fate of Humanity. With a title like that, Jason and Bob have lots of heavy ground to cover, including overshoot, the limits to growth, and the cascading environmental and social crises of our times. They conclude that there are no easy answers or silver-bullet solutions, but by focusing on sustainable size of the human population, appropriate scale of social organization, optimal scope of human competence for managing high-energy modernity, and required speed of taking action to avoid catastrophe, they home in on some strategic responses to the crises. Support the show

Twice 5 Miles Radio, hosted by James Navé, welcomes two-time Grammy Award nominee singer-songwriter Eliza Gilkyson to the microphone. Songs From the River Wind is the title of this show and the title of Eliza's latest record.   Eliza has twenty-five records to her credit, starting in 1969 with Eliza '69 and continuing with Songs From the River Wind in 2022. Since Eliza and I live in Taos, I recently visited her for dinner and her husband, Bob Jensen, and my creative collaborator Allegra Huston.  The dinner conversation ranged from life on the road as a touring musician, old Taos adobe houses, the ins and outs of teaching songwriting compared to teaching poetry, and, of course, the state of the world. After dinner, we strolled across the field in Eliza's backyard, walking and talking on what seemed like the roof of the world under the dusk darkening star popping sky.  When we left, Eliza offered me her CD, Songs from the River Wind, which I happily took and immediately started playing in my car CD player. Yes, my car has a CD player. While it's a bit retro, it certainly does the job with Eliza's lovely songs. Of course, you can also listen to all of Eliza's musical work on YouTube and other digital platforms. Speaking of listening, enjoy this interview and all that Eliza has to say.

After sipping on their ever-present shiny tumblers (filled with who-knows-what), they buckled down for an exciting conversation with Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Famer Bob Jensen and a little controversy about something in the IGFA's latest newsletter and social media postings. The latest International Game Fish Association newsletter showcased four potential world records, including a lunker-eating lunker of a white seabass and the biggest, ugliest, nastiest, most world-record-est snakehead ever caught.  It's a cool story and an amazing fish (that's 1.5 pounds bigger than the current record holder), but Kevin wasn't convinced.  In fact, he didn't think it was a snakehead at all!  Scott was siding with the IGFA on this one... Business really picked up when Kevin and Scott introduced Mr. Bob Jensen.  In case you haven't been fishing in the midwest at any point over the past 35 years...or watched television...or read any angling magazines, you may not know Bob.  He's been into fishing since he was toddler, and he's been involved in fishing education, promotion, and communications for over 35 years.  If that isn't enough, here's a short-list of his accomplishments: 2017 Inductee into the Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame Host/producer of Fishing The Midwest for over 25 years Co-author of four walleye technique books with famous angler Gary Roach Published over 1000 times annually in angling publications Accomplished fishing guide, tournament angler, and fishing seminar speaker Simply stated, he knows his stuff about...a lot of stuff.  During the episode, Bob shared some of the high points of his 35-year career, including TV show watching guests fall in the water, helping baseball great Kent Hrbek land an amazing pike with an even more amazing setup, and catches so big you could barely get them in the boat.  But the best part of the conversation began when all three fishermen kicked back and talked about the species, the techniques, and eccentricities of the regions they fish.  Well, you know how that goes...the stories that get told when a few anglers get together. Check out Bob's TV show, Fishing the Midwest. Check out the snakehead, along with other potential world records, on the International Game Fish Association's May 31, 2018 edition of Hot Catches.

Human nature is to prepare for what you know. But from an emergency management point of view, what happens if we find ourselves dealing with a situation that's so much bigger than anything we've ever experienced or could have imagined? This is one of those questions the sector will continue to wrestle with as it pushes to stay on top of emerging risks and threats. But rather than reinventing the wheel, experts from across the globe are reaching out and learning from one another, to help their communities be more disaster resilient. Australia and the United States have just completed their first ever emergency management staff exchange – a critical part of both countries’ commitment to expand emergency management knowledge across the globe.
