On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with Billy Allen and Jay Burgess from Billy Allen + The Pollies for a conversation that feels less like an interview and more like hanging out with musicians who care deeply about feel: the kind of musical quality you can't really quantify. Still, you know immediately when you hear it.We start with a full-circle moment: the band was scheduled to play Smith's Olde Bar in Atlanta the night of our conversation, a venue I know well. That quickly turns into stories about the realities of life as a working band: stairs, load-ins, and the kind of shared touring experiences that musicians everywhere instantly understand. From there, we trace the long arc of how Billy and Jay's collaboration actually came together. Their connection began years earlier when Jay first heard Billy singing in a bar, but it took time for the right musical moment to develop. That theme of timing runs through the entire conversation, how artists grow into themselves, and how patience can be the difference between a short-lived project and something sustainable. One of my favorite parts of the conversation centers on their philosophy about recording. Billy and Jay talk about their love for capturing music as a band in the room, embracing the push and pull of human tempo and the small imperfections that give a track its life. Jay describes himself as a “perfectionist at imperfection,” and we unpack that idea through classic records that breathe, groove as personality, and what “Southern” really means musically, less about technical flash and more about emotional honesty. We close by talking about what's ahead: the creative pressure of follow-up releases, the temptation to chase past successes, and why the healthiest path forward might be to keep writing, recording, and trusting the process.Key TakeawaysFeel whether the foundation of great music — groove and emotion often matters more than technical perfection.Timing matters in creative partnerships — the right collaboration can sometimes take years to develop fully.Touring creates a shared language among musicians — the realities of life on the road shape the band experience.Recording together captures something unique — the push and pull of human tempo can't be replicated digitally.Imperfection can be musical strength — small flaws often give recordings their personality.Southern musical traditions emphasize soul and storytelling — emotional honesty over technical showmanship.Trusting the process is essential — the best songs often reveal themselves when artists give them time.Music from the EpisodeAll of Me - Billy Allen + the PolliesLady Luck - Billy Allen + the PolliesIf You Want Me to Stay - Billy Allen + the PolliesAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast hosted by Brad Williams, featuring conversations with musicians, composers, producers, and creative thinkers about their musical journeys. In the first part of a two-episode series, Steven Routledge joins Patrick to discuss and analyze the second album from Radiohead, The Bends. tldr: The Fooming Shoggoths are releasing their second album "You Have Not Been a Good User"! Available on Spotify, Youtube Music and (hopefully within a few days) Apple Music. We are also releasing a remastered version of the first album, available similarly on Spotify and Youtube Music. There's an interactive widget here in the post. It took us quite a while but the Fooming Shoggoth's second album is finally complete! We had finished 9 out of the 13 songs on this album around a year ago, but I wasn't quite satisfied with where the whole album was at for me to release it on Spotify and other streaming platforms. This album was written with the (very ambitious) aim of making songs that in addition to being about things I care about (and making fun of things that I care about), are actually decently good on their own, just as songs. And while I don't think I've managed to make music that can compete with my favorite artists, I do think I have succeeded at making music that is at the very Pareto-frontier of being good music, and being about things I care about. This means the songs [...] --- First published: April 1st, 2026 Source: https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/hrZAvpLnBTgRhNmgk/you-have-not-been-a-good-user-lesswrong-s-second-album --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO.

The Chancellor has prepared the pitch for a tough second Budget, with tax rises expected as part of a fiscal strategy designed to reassure markets that the UK's public finances are firmly under control. But the Chancellor has also promised to protect the NHS, boost growth and support families with the cost of living. Acting decisively on all of these priorities would be no mean feat as part of a Budget that takes more than it gives. How tough a settlement has the Chancellor delivered on tax rises and spending cuts? To what extent have manifesto pledges been breached? How much will the measures announced help or hinder economic growth? Who are the main winners and losers? And to what extent has this Budget laid the groundwork for the rest of the Parliament? 2025 has been an incredible year for Iranian-Norwegian metallers Confess. Back in January, they released stunning new album, ‘Destination Addiction', which was produced by frontman Nikan Khosravi, mixed and mastered by Grammy-nominated Alberto De Icaza (Amon Amarth, Clutch, Miss May I, Dead Cross, Upon A Burning Body) and featured performances from extreme metal luminaries George Kollias (Nile) and Marzi Montazeri (ex-Phil Anselmo and Illegals, ex-Superjoint Ritual, ex-Exhorder, Heavy As Texas). Then, in September, the band had their story featured in a full episode as part of the HULU show ‘Into the Void: Life, Death & Heavy Metal'. Now, finishing the year off in style, the band are re-releasing their seminal second album ‘In Pursuit of Dreams' on November 7th, 2025. Seminal, because it was the last record they dropped while still in Iran, and in frontman Nikan Khosravi's own words has become: A lightning rod for rebellion, defiance, and unapologetic expression. This album, its importance, the decision to re-release it, and much more, is discussed in our interview with Nikan. When Testament finished touring behind their debut album The Legacy, they had zero songs written for a follow-up. The label didn't care—they demanded another record immediately. Scrambling to fulfill their contract's 40-minute minimum, the Bay Area thrash band wrote The New Order in the studio, added an Aerosmith cover, tossed in some classical-influenced instrumentals, and somehow delivered one of 1988's most essential thrash metal albums. In this episode of Dig Me Out 80s Metal, hosts Jason Ziak, Tim Minneci, and Chip Midnight explore how Testament turned deadline panic into precision thrash. They break down Alex Skolnick's astonishing guitar work (recorded when he was just 19 years old), Chuck Billy's evolving vocal style, the power grooves that made Testament stand apart from their thrash peers, and why this album should've earned them a spot in the “Big Five” of thrash metal alongside Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, and Anthrax. If you love Metallica, Anthrax, Overkill, or Bay Area thrash metal, this episode unpacks why The New Order remains a thrash clinic 37 years later.Episode Highlights:0:00 – Introduction to 80s Metal poll results and Testament's victory over Motörhead, Anthrax, and Blackfoot1:03 – Band history: Testament's origins as Legacy, their Bay Area roots, and the contract crisis that shaped The New Order3:47 – What works: Alex Skolnick's classical-influenced precision playing at age 19, the power grooves, and the locked-in rhythm section8:12 – “Into the Pit” – Why Testament's most-played live song became a thrash anthem (even though it's not about moshing)12:20 – “Disciples of the Watch” – Breaking down one of the album's heaviest tracks and Skolnick's sweeping guitar mastery15:04 – The Aerosmith cover: How “Nobody's Fault” became an unexpected highlight and showcased Testament's versatility18:29 – The instrumentals: “Hypnosis” and “The Dirge” as atmospheric breathers that elevate the album's pacing21:44 – “Trial by Fire” – The single that featured on MTV's Headbangers Ball and showcased Testament's unique arrangements24:03 – What doesn't work: Chuck Billy's Metallica-influenced vocals and missed melodic opportunities29:59 – Original vs. remastered versions: Why the remaster brings the bass and drums forward for a fuller sound34:47 – Worthy Album ratings across the board and why this is Testament's quintessential record40:05 – Testament's evolution from The New Order to their heavier modern sound on 2025's ParabellumSubscribe to Dig Me Out for weekly deep dives into 70s rock, 80s metal, 90s alternative, and 2000s rock. You were Here », merci David !

The International group "The Salt Collective" are releasing the follow-up to their critically acclaimed 2023 album debut, Life. Their second full-length release "A Brief History of Blindness" is a widescreen exploration of hope, memory, and resilience that features contributions from Aimee Mann, Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Andy Partridge (XTC), and Matthew Caws (Nada Surf) among others (writing credits and list of featured performers below). A Brief History of Blindness is being released on 12" LP vinyl, CD, digital download and streaming services by Propeller Sound Recordings November 21. While the Salt Collective's first outing was recorded remotely with many vocalists and instrumentalists working separately on multiple continents at different times, A Brief History of Blindness features the core musicians gathered in the same space interacting together in real time. The guys are on Spring Break this week, so we handed the reins over to P3Z-Nutz for another Untitled Beatles Podclassic! ----- [Originally released February 5, 2021] The gang continues its exploration of the early U.S. Capitol Records releases, this week covering the covers-heavy Beatles' Second Album. Tony owns up to his early underestimation of this classic, T.J. goes to bat for his official Fifth Beatle, Bryan Adams brings his piano to your mom's porch, And we think we've maybe stumbled upon the next great (grown-ups only) classic rock radio format, just in case this whole podcast thing doesn't pan out.
