Dr. Dave Mather- A retired Commander with 38 years of law enforcement experience 22 of those active. Owner and operator of What's-a-Mather consulting where he goes around the world teaching organizations on deliberate leadership, culture change & public safety consulting. Dave has worked with more than 400 agencies around the world supporting public safety and the communities they serve. Yes you heard & read that right with law enforcement. Dave came highly recommended from Ricky “Esco” Escolero who told me I had to get him on and talk anything and everything leadership. Dave did not disappoint and hit so many targets when it came to leadership and organizations that I'm sure any Firefighter listening will be able to relate to. Realizing it's acceptable to incorporate outside instruction in a learning environment, such as a guest speaker, can be a positive step for enhancing employee engagement and providing diverse learning experiences. This shift can foster a more holistic and enjoyable learning environment for the organization. LinkedIn: Dave Mather

Many of us find our love for the outdoors the same way – with a hike. A short jaunt into the woods that brings us in touch with nature. But soon, short hikes just won't do. There're too many people. Too many screaming kids. Too much car traffic. So, the only logical next step is to take longer hikes. 2 miles turns into 5 miles, turns into 10 miles. The peaceful solitude of the woods, the rewarding views from a summit and the sense of accomplishment after completing a trail all contribute to a growing desire to spend even more time immersed in nature. As that passion grows, the idea of longer backpacking trips becomes more appealing. The ability to stay in the wilderness overnight offers a deeper connection to the outdoors.Gone are the easy hikes. Now you're planning multi-day journeys that require you to learn additional skills. You learn how to read maps. You develop a sleeping system. You figure out how to poop outside. Soon, you're watching ultralight gear videos on YouTube and drooling over maps of the Appalachian Trail. All of your clothes are hiking clothes and full transformation to granola gang is complete. For some, the progression from day hiker to backpacker is a natural one. But for many, myself included, it can be intimidating. Going from hiking around a lake to hiking for several days is a difficult hurdle – mentally and physically. But where do I start? What gear do I need? What hikes should I try? How can I go from a day hiker to a backpacker safely? Well since I'm still a backpacking noob, I decided to talk to the person that was once in my hiking shoes. On this episode, I speak with Tory Mather. Tory is the voice behind the My Trails Are Many blog and @ToryTalksTrails accounts on social media. In this episode of the Glowing Older podcast, host Nancy Griffin interviews Cate O'Brien, MPH, PhD, Senior Vice President of Mather Institute and Community Initiatives, discussing the organization's mission to improve the lives of older adults through innovative research and community initiatives. They explore various topics including the challenges faced by Generation X, the importance of planning for solo agers, the role of mindfulness in aging well, and emerging trends in person-centered wellness. About Cate Cate O'Brien, MPH, PhD, joined Mather as a Senior Research Associate in 2005. She leads the Institute's research team to identify, develop, and conduct research programs in wellness and engagement across the aging services field. She also conducts and disseminates various research projects and establishes partnerships with universities to expand Mather's reach and enhance the Institute's reputation as a thought leader. Cate collaborates with all areas of Mather to evaluate the impact of internal initiatives. Cate also leads the Community Initiatives team in developing and implementing strategies to grow the number of older adults served through virtual and in-person programs, such as the popular D.I.T. (Do It Together) Creative Art Kits. Cate earned a Master of Arts degree in Cultural Anthropology from University of California, San Diego; a Master's in Public Health (epidemiology) from San Diego State University; and a PhD in public health and community health sciences from the University of Illinois, Chicago. Key Takeaways Mather Institute focuses on creating ways to age well. Mather's three areas of aging services include: four senior living communities, community initiatives and the Mather Institute. Solo agers often lack support and planning for aging. Nearly one third (27%) of people 60 and older qualify as solo agers. Mather Institute's research on Generation X spans three years. Year one focused on Gen X's top three priorities: family, career, and health. Year two took a deep dive into health and wellness, and year three will focus on the workforce. Mather's research shows Gen Xers experiencing more stress in their lives than Boomers, which could be a result of the sandwich generation caring for kids and parents and also related to finances. Non-clinical interventions like social prescriptions and nature prescriptions are proven to improve health and wellness.

Today's return guest is a Mark O. Hatfield (R, Oregon) type of Republican, Dr. Vernon Grounds, Ph.D., former Chancellor, President, and long-time professor of Philosophy and Psychology, and founder of the Counseling Department at Denver Seminary, where TRP's host Dr. Lucas J. Mather, Ph.D. knew Dr. Grounds during Dr. Mather's graduate student days. Dr. Grounds taught in the philosophy department as well courses on Existentialism and Christian worldview. Our topic today on The Republican Professor Podcast is emotional problems and American Politics. Last Fall, we did a series on Anxiety and American Politics. Last Spring we did a series on Hatred and Anger in the Normative Christian Tradition. We return today with a focus on the concepts and phenomena of Pride in Biblical and Political Phenomenology in the American context. You've probably noticed the relevance to American Politics if you're paying attention. I can think of no better guest than Dr. Grounds, who is a rare bird in that he was one of the first to get the in depth Psychology training--a Ph.D. in Psychology--and applied that to Christian ministry and Apologetics. Dr. Grounds got his bachelors from Rutgers during the Great Depression, and struggled mightily with his Christian faith. Join me for My Chat with Derek Mather in The Laddie Snug at Artisan. On a recent pilgrimage to the magical whisky island of Islay, off the coast of Scotland with a couple of good buddies, we made an overnight detour to the small town of Wishaw, midway between Edinburgh and Glasgow, to the famous Artisan restaurant. Head chef, owner, curator and co-founder of the Friends of Bruichladdich FaceBook group, Derek Mather, founded this whisky mecca 16 yrs ago..... and the grub ain't half bad either..... Derek and his wife Fiona have amassed 1000's of bottles of Independently bottled Scotch whisky, all open and for sale by the dram at their Artisan Restaurant. Derek doesn't believe in full bottles and prices each dram with a marginal mark-up, so that whisky lovers can visit and afford to drink some of the most fantastic whisky bottles they will ever have the pleasure of sampling. We sat in his Laddie Snug and had a great chat about what he's been up to. It was an absolute pleasure. Anti-vaccine sentiment is, more or less, as old as vaccines. When Cotton Mather promoted inoculations against smallpox in the 1720s, someone threw a firebomb through his window with a message attached: “Mather, you dog, Damn you, I'll inoculate you with this.” Today's vaccines are as safe and effective as ever. So why, suddenly, is the anti-vax movement at the height of its power and influence? Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the nominee to be the next secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, is “the king of the anti-vaxxers,” says Atlantic senior editor Daniel Engber. But RFK Jr. isn't alone. An array of nominees across the fringe science belief spectrum appear ready to take the reins in Trump's new administration. In this episode, we discuss this disorienting moment, when anti-vaccine conspiracy theorists may soon be in charge of the agencies that fund, recommend, and research vaccines, with Engber and Arthur Allen, author of Vaccines: The Controversial Story of Medicine's Greatest Lifesaver. What levers could the anti-vaxxers in charge pull to disrupt vaccine distribution? How could they affect vaccine recommendations and research? And what happens if there is an outbreak? Ultimately, how fragile is the nation's vaccine infrastructure? --- Share understanding this holiday season. For less than $2 a week, give a year-long Atlantic subscription to someone special. We return today with a focus on the concepts and phenomena of Pride in Biblical and Political Phenomonenology in the American context. He got seminary training, and later a Ph.D. in Psychology from Drew University, where he wrote a dissertation on the concept of love in the thought of Sigmund Freud. He wrote several books, but the one we discuss and read from today is his "Emotional Problems and the Gospel" (Zondervan, 1976). Since Dr. Ground died before we were able to record this with him, he joins this episode through his chapter in the above book, which he titled "The Bible and Pride, Part 1." Grandpa Mather flew F6F Hellcats during World War 2, and later married Dottie Rehnland of Michigan, and had 3 kids, one of whom was my father. He became a Christian at the big Methodist Church in Colorado Springs in 1956 at Dawson Trotman's funeral when Billy Graham gave the eulogy. In 1962, Grandpa founded Mr. Steak, Inc., which eventually had 286 restaurants in the United States and in Canada. Grandpa Mather calls his grandson, TRP Producer and Host Lucas J. Mather, on 7 May 2020 during the lockdowns to encourage the boy. Grandpa Mather is today 101 years old and resides in Ventura County, California. He attends Godspeak Calvary Chapel in Newberry Park with his wife of 29 years, Linda Lopez Mather, daughter of longtime restaurant owner Sal Lopez, owner of Sal's Mexican Inn at 1450 Oxnard Blvd for many decades in Oxnard, California. The Republican Professor is produced and hosted by Dr. Lucas J. Mather, Ph.D., also a US Navy veteran.
Explore creative community transformation with teaching artist Jeff Mather as he shares stories of art, collaboration, and social change in education.Jeff Mather's work as a teaching artist and public art digital storytelling alchemist underscores the vital role of art in fostering community resilience and engagement. The conversation with Bill Cleveland reveals how, despite the challenges posed by recent global events, Mather remains optimistic about the transformative potential of creative collaborations. By reflecting on his experiences in various educational and community settings, he illustrates how art can bridge divides, empower youth, and reinvigorate spaces that have been overlooked or abandoned. His dedication to involving students in the artistic process not only cultivates their creativity but also instills a sense of agency and responsibility for their environment. The episode captures the essence of Mather's philosophy: art is not merely an aesthetic endeavor but a powerful tool for social change. Mather recounts the impactful project in West Baltimore, where he worked with local youth to design and install an environmental sculpture in a park that had long been neglected. This initiative not only beautified the area but also engaged the community in a dialogue about safety, ownership, and the importance of reclaiming shared spaces. Mather's insights into the dynamics of teaching and collaboration highlight the necessity of recognizing and valuing each participant's unique contributions, which ultimately enriches the artistic outcome.Furthermore, the discussion delves into the challenges and rewards of community-based art practices, particularly in relation to trust-building and navigating complex social landscapes. Mather emphasizes the importance of entering communities with humility and a willingness to learn, rather than imposing external solutions. His experiences with Alternate Roots showcase the power of grassroots movements in advocating for social and economic justice through art. As the episode unfolds, it becomes evident that Mather's work embodies a vision of art as a communal endeavor—one that celebrates diversity, fosters connection, and cultivates a shared sense of purpose in navigating the challenges of our times.Key Moments00:18 The Turning Point: Reflections on Change and Future Challenges00:35 Reflections on Creative Change Agents13:59 Alternate ROOTS and Community Engagement22:55 The Impact of Community Engagement in Public Art31:14 Engaging with Community Through Art40:03 The Impact of Art and CommunityBIOJeff is a community-based public artist and teaching artist in Georgia, (and South Carolina and Massachusetts and Utah), for over 30 years. I don't subscribe to the idea that some people are curious eaters while others just aren't. I think we may have a baseline of food curiosity, but I also think that baseline can shift. And I imagine that's what caught my attention when I spotted The 2024 Consumer Curiosity Report – findings from a survey of 850+ early food adopters, conducted by Curious Plot, a marketing, communications and consulting agency. It seemed like the curiosity intersection of our appetites, opportunities and influences, and I wanted to know more. Most writers focus on the writing part of copywriting, which only makes sense as we're writers. But maybe we should be doing more copythinking before we start to write. Our guest for the 415th episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast is A-List Copywriter David Deutsch. And when it comes to thinking about copy, David has few peers. He talked about strategy, writing emotional copy, coming up with big ideas, and much more. Click the play button below, or scroll down for a full transcript. Stuff to check out: David's website The How to Write Emotional Copy Workshop The Copywriter Club Facebook Group The Copywriter Underground Full Transcript: Rob Marsh: When we started The Copywriter Club Podcast, one of the things we were adamant about was that we would interview copywriters at all levels of experience and at all the various stages of their business journey. So we've spoken with copywriters who are just getting started along with those with years of experience. We've interviewed copywriters who call themselves content writers, strategists, consultants and various other titles. We've heard from marketers and authors and experts in all kinds of fields. In fact we used to start the podcast with the promise that you would listen and walk away with plenty of ideas you could “steal” for your own business. With that background, it's always a thrill to get the opportunity to interview an expert copywriter who has earned his place on the A-List. One of the go-to copywriters when it comes to being coached by one of the very best in the direct response world. Hi, I'm Rob Marsh, and on today's episode of The Copywriter Club Podcast, I'm speaking with A-list copywriter David Deutsch. David has generated more than a billion dollars in sales over the course of his career. Not bad. And probably someone we can learn from. You'll hear this in the interview, but one of the things David likes to talk about is the difference between writing and persuasion and copywriting. The two ought to be the same, but often they're not. I know I say this every episode, but I think you're going to like this interview. So stick around. Before we jump in with David… It's October. Which means the year is 3/4 done… we've all got one more quarter to reach the goals we set for our businesses at the beginning of the year. So let me ask you, how is it going? Are you ahead or behind your goals? What can you accomplish in the next 12 weeks that will move your business forward and set you up for a successful 2025… hard to believe the decade is half over… any way in my opinion the best place for copywriters to stretch and reach their goals is The Copywriter Underground, the paid membership with more than 100 hours of training, including an entire course on selling, a mini-course on proposals, more than 27 different templates, including a legal agreement, and so many other resources designed to help you grow. And each month, we invite a different guest expert to teach a new skill… this month's members-only persentation is by Email Marketing Hero Kennedy on creating lead magnets that attract buyers, not freebie seekers to your list. It's the kind of skill that will help you build your own list and make you so much more valuable to your clients. It's happening next week in The Copywriter Underground which you can join at thecopywriterclub.com/tcu. And now, let's go to our interview with David… David, welcome to The Copywriter Club Podcast. I would love to start with your story. How did you become a direct response copywriter, a copy coach, and I think what some people would even say, you know, original member of the A-list of copywriters that are out there? Tell us how you got there. David Deutsch: Oh, well, thanks. It's great to be here, first of all. And, you know, I started on I don't know how far back to go, but I started my advertising career at Ogilvy and Mather in New York, which was David Ogilvy's agency back when he still occ...

Octopuses haven't shared a common ancestor with humans in at least 600 million years. But somehow, separately, these invertebrates evolved remarkable problem-solving abilities, curiosity and intelligence. Octopus researcher Jennifer Mather, PhD, talks about what we know about octopus behavior and cognition, how they evolved to be so smart, how the octopus brain is structured, and what can we learn about thinking and intelligence in general from studying how it evolved in a species so far removed from us.
