Brian Lee Crowley says Canada's special relationship with the US is not nearly over.
“Donald Trump is looming so large in the Canadian consciousness right now,” says Brian Lee Crowley.“And I have seen a lot of my compatriots running around like chickens with their heads cut off, saying, ‘Oh my God, Donald Trump is a mad man. You can't understand what he's doing. There's no rhyme or reason to it.' And I looked at what Donald Trump was doing, and I thought, ‘Okay, I don't have to like it. That's a separate question. But if the question is, 'Can I understand it?' The answer is yes.”Crowley is the founder and managing director of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, a Canadian think tank whose work is often cited by the Canadian Parliament.“What exactly is the difference between Canada and America, or Canadians and Americans? It's not that it's difficult to answer because there aren't differences. It's difficult to answer because the differences are subtle and hard to express,” says Crowley.“Remember that America broke away through a violent revolution from the crown and the United Kingdom—from Great Britain. Canadians never experienced that.”In this episode, we dive into the recent election in Canada, Trump's comments about Canada as America's 51st state, and what the future of United States–Canada relations may look like.“Canada exports 50 percent of everything made in the private sector, and the vast bulk of that, like 90 percent, goes to the United States. But [in] the United States, by contrast, foreign trade, or international trade, only represents barely 25 percent of the amount of the American economy, and that's diversified across all of its trade partners. So, while for Canada, the relationship with the United States is existential, for America, the relationship with Canada is convenient, nice—not existential.”Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.

Author and political economist Brian Lee Crowley is founder of Ottawa's leading think tank, the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, and also the Washington-based Center for North American Prosperity, and Security. In this edition of Hannaford, he says that notwithstanding alarmist — indeed vituperative — predictions by Canadian mainstream media commentators, fundamental economic realities dictate that life will go on as before in Canada. The same goes for a possible Harris presidency. "There are constraints upon what Trump would be able to do, and those same constraints would apply to a Democrat president."

Jagmeet Singh and the NDP are doing a victory lap after the Liberals unveiled a plan to provide dental insurance for up to nine million low-income, uninsured Canadians. We obsess about marginal issues that make us feel good, while nasty regimes around the world laugh at our moral pretentiousness and undermine the institutions we have so painstakingly created.”
As the Conservative Party of Canada leadership race goes on, candidates are putting forth visions not only for what they hope to bring to the party, but also how they want to present the party to Canadians. Brian interviews Brian Lee Crowley. Brian Lee Crowley is the founder and managing director of the MacDonald-Laurier Institute, an independent and non-partisan think tank based in Ottawa. He recently wrote a series of 6 op-ed articles for the National Post on what the Conservative party needs to do and who it leader needs to represent, if they want to be taken seriously as the alternative governing party. We discuss: Why the Tories need to put country before party, and focus on being the party of opportunity rather than the party of redistribution or special interests.
Why does the rule of law matter? And how do we come together in the face of differences? In the latest Freedom Feature, recorded earlier in February, Barry discusses the rule of law with Dr. Brian Lee Crowley, Managing Director of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute in Ottawa. The two consider what happens if a government decides to pick and choose which laws apply depending on its own ideology. They also share concerns about academia, revisionist history, and the influence of certain “progressive” ideas that tend to undermine rather than strengthen our society. Dr. Crowley shares some powerful imagery from his latest book Gardeners vs Designers: Understanding the Great Fault Line in Canadian Politics (Sutherland House, 2020), in which he argues that society is less like a machine that can be tinkered with and more like a garden that needs to be tended. Dr. Crowley is also the author of Fearful Symmetry: the Fall and Rise of Canada's Founding Values (2009).
