Larry Ostola speaks with Don Abelson about his book History Has Made Us Friends. Separated by the world's longest land border and engaging in over three billion dollars in trade daily, Canada and the United States share security concerns, cultural interests, and a history spanning more than 250 years. Alan Rock, former Canadian ambassador to the United States, has said that this special relationship represents “a bond that is beyond practical. It borders on mystical.” The rise of nativist sentiment, however, has raised concerns over preserving this relationship. History Has Made Us Friends illuminates the nature and dynamics of Canada-US relations, examining their history, attributed meaning, and conceptualization. Contributors consider many angles and perspectives, including the impact of geopolitical change, to determine whether the relationship warrants the moniker “special.” They explore whether shared values and demographic similarities continue to cement the relationship, and if it still matters whether presidents and prime ministers get along. While things look different today from when President Kennedy declared, “What unites us is far greater than what divides us,” History Has Made Us Friends argues that the Canada-US relationship – often narrowly understood or dismissed as a relic of the past – continues to be unique and resilient. Donald E. Abelson is academic director of the Wilson College of Leadership and Civic Engagement and professor of political science at McMaster University. In this episode, we are joined by Professor John Price (University of Victoria), who leads the Canada–China Focus project. We discuss how Canada–China relations are debated in ways that can intensify anti-Asian racism and Sinophobia, and how Canada–China Focus works to reframe public conversation. We use Price's submission to the Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference as a stand-alone case to think through how “security” discourse can produce racialized harm, and we close by reflecting on what Prime Minister Mark Carney's January 2026 visit to Beijing signals for the next phase of Canada–China relations—and what short- and long-term work is needed to sustain anti-racist public awareness alongside serious foreign-policy debate. Send us Fan MailA stranger walks up holding an old canoe book and says, “You signed this to my dad 35 years ago.” Minutes later, Kevin Callan signs it again for the next generation and the whole Hamilton Adventure Expo suddenly feels like a small world. That's where our livestream chat begins, and it sets the tone for a conversation about how canoe camping stories stick, how outdoor skills get passed along, and why community is the real reason these shows matter. We dig into Kevin's idea of “ultimate canoe routes” and why he opens his talk by saying the best trip is the next one. Then we get specific: Algonquin's Brent Run, a loop around Killarney, Lake Superior's Bustard Islands, Kejimkujik in Nova Scotia, and even Scotland's River Spey. If you're looking for canoe route inspiration, paddling trip planning ideas, or just a reminder that repeat trips can still feel brand new, this one delivers. We also go behind the scenes on outdoor writing and Canadian publishing. Kevin shares what it's like to hit 20 books, how rewarding it is when kids show up already excited about what they learned, and how printing and shipping across the Canada US border can turn sales into losses overnight. We talk honest numbers on royalties, why self-publishing can make sense, and the simple advice that matters most: write the book first. If you enjoy real talk about paddling, camping, and making a life around the outdoors, subscribe, share this with a friend who loves canoe trips, and leave a review so more Canadian campers can find the show.https://kevincallan.com/https://www.youtube.com/c/KCHappyCamperhttps://www.facebook.com/kevin.callan.311/https://www.instagram.com/kchappycamper/Support the showCONNECT WITH US AT SUPER GOOD CAMPING:Support the podcast & buy super cool SWAG: https://store.skgroupinc.com/super_good_camping/shop/homeEMAIL: hi@supergoodcamping.comWEBSITE: www.supergoodcamping.comYOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqFDJbFJyJ5Y-NHhFseENsQINSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/super_good_camping/TWITTER: https://twitter.com/SuperGoodCampinFACEBOOK GROUP: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SuperGoodCamping/TIKTOK: https://www.tiktok.com/@supergoodcampingSupport the show

He's done it again: Prime Minister Mark Carney has convinced yet another Conservative to join his Liberal government. This time, it's Sarnia—Lambton—Bkejwanong MP Marilyn Gladu, who previously said she was "personally pro-life" and opposed a Liberal bill to ban conversion therapy. She's now recanting those positions as Carney insists Liberal values are unchanged. How does it work when the Liberals try to cajole a Tory to join them? Catherine Cullen sits down with the first Conservative MP who made the leap to the Liberals, Chris d'Entremont, and Kody Blois, one of the Liberals who wooed him to cross the floor, to find out how it happens. Then, poll analyst Philippe Fournier lays the ground for Monday's byelections, when Carney is expected to cement his majority in Parliament. And as the Liberals hold their policy convention in Montreal, Hill watchers Joël-Denis Bellavance and Nick Taylor-Vaisey discuss the dramatic week in Canadian politics and what Gladu's departure means for her former leader, Pierre Poilievre. Plus, this week US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada-US trade negotiations could stretch past the July 1st deadline, and that there were “unresolved issues” with Canada. One of those irritants is the new Online Streaming Act, designed to make big streamers like Netflix and Disney pay to fund Canadian content the way that broadcasters do. CBC's Jennifer Chevalier explores whether the Online Streaming Act is worth fighting for – in the face of yet more tariff threats. This episode features the voices of:Chris d'Entremont, Liberal MP for Acadie—AnnapolisKody Blois, Liberal MP for Kings—HantsPhilippe Fournier, editor-in-chief at 338 CanadaJoël-Denis Bellavance, Ottawa bureau chief for La PresseNick Taylor-Vaisey, Ottawa bureau chief for PoliticoReynolds Mastin, President and CEO of the Canadian Media Producers AssociationCarla de Jong, Head of Co-Production and International Partnerships at Sinking Ship EntertainmentAndrew Cash, CEO of the Canadian Independent Music Association and former NDP MPSandra Aubé, Liberal strategistVass Bednar, Managing Director of the Canadian Shield InstituteMichael Geist, Canada Research Chair in Internet and e-Commerce Law at the University in Ottawa

Dr. Donald L. Smith is the Distinguished James McGill Professor in the Department of Plant Science at McGill University. He is also CEO of BioFuelNet Canada, Head of Biomass Canada, and Head of the McGill Network for Innovation on Biofuels and Bioproduct. Don's research examines relationships between plants and the microbes that live in association with them, particularly in the roots. He and his collaborators have discovered evidence of signaling between plants and microbes, including microbial signaling that causes plants to grow better. They also uncovered that plants respond much more strongly to signals in the presence of drought or cold stress. Now they are expanding their investigations to examine a wide range of plant-associated microbes to better understand the signals they send and how they may impact plant health and resilience. Outside of the lab, Don loves to unwind and recharge by going on walks and reading great novels. He is also an avid traveler who enjoys blending work with trips to new places whenever possible, turning conferences and collaborations into opportunities to explore the world. He received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Acadia University and his PhD from the University of Guelph. Afterwards, he worked as an Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Postdoctoral Fellow at Agriculture Canada before joining the faculty at McGill University in 1985. Over the course of his career, Don has received many awards and honors, including, the Clean50 award for contributions to sustainable development and clean capitalism in Canada and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, in this case for significant contributions to intelligent agriculture . He is also a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Agronomy, and he served as a Member of the Canada-US think tank on climate change and agriculture in North Eastern North America. In our interview, Don shares more about his life and science.

Did Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre put Canada in a tough spot by praising President Donald Trump's action in Venezuela? Sharan Kaur argues yes (3:30) in our feature interview presented by Mercedes-Benz Edmonton West. A NOTE FROM RYAN: Thirty seconds after we wrapped this episode, I learned of Anna Murphy's passing. Just weeks ago - on November 19 - Anna joined us (with her heart on her sleeve), speaking passionately about mental health challenges facing the Trans community and the urgent need for better supports to address disproportionate (and heartbreaking) rates of suicide. I'll forever respect her advocacy and admire Anna's courage. Our deepest condolences and much love to her family and wide circle of friends.

There's been a lot going on in Quebec politics this year while many of us may have had our eye on the Canada-US relations. The Quebec government has been under fire for its policies on doctors, on secularism, on a new constitution, and more. The new leader of the opposition Quebec Liberals is under heavy pressure to resign. And the Parti Quebecois, which many had written off, is now talking about winning the next election in October, and promising a referendum when it does. We talk to Emilie Nicolas, a columnist for Le Devoir in Montreal, and Valérie Gaudreau, a political columnist for Le Soleil in Quebec City about the future of Quebec politics, and its impact for Canada.

Josh Weinberg recently checked in with Kurt Refsnider, a bikepacker attempting the first full ride of the Orogenesis Trail. At roughly 5,000 miles, the route begins at the Canada–US border and travels through Washington, Oregon, and California to the Mexico border, then onto the Baja Divide. At the time of recording, Kurt was in Paisley, Oregon, about 1,100 miles in, nearing California and the halfway point through the U.S. section.Kurt details how challenging the ride through Washington was, with nearly 120,000 feet of climbing and descending over rugged moto trails and non-motorized singletrack near Mount St. Helens. He faced detours due to land closures, and construction added to the difficulty.Once in Oregon, Kurt has primarily followed the Oregon Timber Trail. Using elevation gain as a metric for daily effort, he explains how climbing has taken priority over daily mileage, aiming for 7,000 to 8,000 feet of climbing per day.He also dives into gear maintenance and resupply strategies, which have been tough, with dust wearing down his suspension and brake pads, and unpredictable provision availability. He's already swapped out some wear items and explains how opting for battery packs over a dynamo hub for power has worked out.Along the way, Kurt has been fueled by strong community support.Folks following along are tracking his progress, offering lodging, bringing food, and sharing real-time trail conditions. Looking ahead, he faces a tough, deadfall-heavy section in southern Oregon. Once he crosses into California, he'll encounter faster ATV trails before taking a rest near Quincy and heading into long singletrack sections through Truckee and Tahoe, where we plan to catch up with him again.
