Charlie is a politician, musician, and author who has published nine books, including Unlikely Radicals, Children of the Broken Treaty, and Cobalt: Cradle of the Demon Metals, Birth of a Mining Superpower, which was shortlisted for the Trillium Prize. His most recent book is Dangerous Memory: Coming of Age in the Decade of Greed, published by House of Anansi in 2024. Author and activist Naomi Klein has called the book "an extraordinary read from a true Canadian original.”Charlie and I talk about the new pope and the future of the federal NDP, about how writing became a necessary activity during his time in Parliament, and about his work-in-progress, which examines our dystopic political present through the lens of the 1930s.This podcast is produced and hosted by Nathan Whitlock, in partnership with The Walrus.Music: "simple-hearted thing" by Alex Lukashevsky. “Donald Trump is looming so large in the Canadian consciousness right now,” says Brian Lee Crowley.“And I have seen a lot of my compatriots running around like chickens with their heads cut off, saying, ‘Oh my God, Donald Trump is a mad man. You can't understand what he's doing. There's no rhyme or reason to it.' And I looked at what Donald Trump was doing, and I thought, ‘Okay, I don't have to like it. That's a separate question. But if the question is, 'Can I understand it?' The answer is yes.”Crowley is the founder and managing director of the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, a Canadian think tank whose work is often cited by the Canadian Parliament.“What exactly is the difference between Canada and America, or Canadians and Americans? It's not that it's difficult to answer because there aren't differences. It's difficult to answer because the differences are subtle and hard to express,” says Crowley.“Remember that America broke away through a violent revolution from the crown and the United Kingdom—from Great Britain. Canadians never experienced that.”In this episode, we dive into the recent election in Canada, Trump's comments about Canada as America's 51st state, and what the future of United States–Canada relations may look like.“Canada exports 50 percent of everything made in the private sector, and the vast bulk of that, like 90 percent, goes to the United States. But [in] the United States, by contrast, foreign trade, or international trade, only represents barely 25 percent of the amount of the American economy, and that's diversified across all of its trade partners. So, while for Canada, the relationship with the United States is existential, for America, the relationship with Canada is convenient, nice—not existential.”Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.

pWotD Episode 2919: 2025 Canadian federal election Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 1,195,203 views on Tuesday, 29 April 2025 our article of the day is 2025 Canadian federal election. The 2025 Canadian federal election was held on April 28, 2025, to elect members of the House of Commons to the 45th Canadian Parliament. The writs of election were issued on March 23, 2025, after Governor General Mary Simon accepted a request to dissolve parliament from Prime Minister Mark Carney. This was the first election to use a new 343-seat electoral map based on the 2021 Canadian census. The main topics of the election campaign were the cost of living, housing, crime, the industrial carbon tax, and most notably tariffs and annexation threats by U. S. President Donald Trump. The Liberal Party have won the election as a minority government. It is the fourth consecutive Liberal government and third consecutive Liberal minority government after its victories in 2015, 2019, and 2021. The Liberal Party is also estimated to have won the popular vote, in contrast to the Conservative Party winning the popular vote in the 2019 and 2021 election. Both Liberals and Conservatives increased their polling, while the other parties all lost ground and the NDP lost party status for the first time since 1993. This is the first election since 2000 where the Liberals polled over 40 percent; the first since 1988 where the Conservatives had done so; and the first time since 1930 where both had passed that threshold. The Liberals also won the largest share of the popular vote for any party since the Progressive Conservatives' landslide victory in the 1984 election, it was also the worst result for the New Democratic Party since they were founded in 1961, receiving just over 6 percent of the popular vote and winning only 7 seats. The result was a stunning reversal of polling trends which lasted from mid-2023 to January 2025, which had projected a Conservative majority government. Carney's replacement of Trudeau as Liberal leader played a key role in this turnabout: thanks to his extensive experience as a central banker and his perceived competence, Carney was seen as better suited to handle the trade war launched by the U. S. and other major economic issues.Three leaders of parties represented in Parliament lost the elections for their seats: Pierre Poilievre of the Conservative Party (to Bruce Fanjoy), Jagmeet Singh of the New Democratic Party, and Jonathan Pedneault, the co-leader of the Green Party. Poilievre had held his riding for seven consecutive terms, being first elected in 2004, and his defeat was a notable shock and upset for the Conservatives, despite them receiving their best result since 1988. Despite the Liberal Party faring well in the election, one sitting minister in Carney's government lost re-election, Health Minister Kamal Khera. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 03:02 UTC on Wednesday, 30 April 2025.For the full current version of the article, see 2025 Canadian federal election on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm long-form Danielle.

pWotD Episode 2869: Justin Trudeau Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 251,499 views on Monday, 10 March 2025 our article of the day is Justin Trudeau.Justin Pierre James Trudeau (born December 25, 1971) is a Canadian politician who is the 23rd prime minister of Canada, having served since 2015. He was the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada from 2013 to 2025 and has served as the member of Parliament (MP) for Papineau since 2008.Trudeau was born in Ottawa, Ontario, as the eldest son of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, and attended Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from McGill University and a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of British Columbia. After graduating, he taught at the secondary school level in Vancouver, before returning to Montreal in 2002 to further his studies. He was chair for the youth charity Katimavik and director of the not-for-profit Canadian Avalanche Association. In 2006, he was appointed as chair of the Liberal Party's Task Force on Youth Renewal. In the 2008 federal election, he was elected to represent the riding of Papineau in the House of Commons. He was the Liberal Party's Official Opposition critic for youth and multiculturalism in 2009; in 2010, he became critic for citizenship and immigration. In 2011, he was appointed as a critic for secondary education and sport. In 2013, Trudeau was elected as the leader of the Liberal Party and led the party to a majority government in the 2015 federal election. He became the second-youngest prime minister in Canadian history and the first to be the child of a previous prime minister.Major government initiatives Trudeau undertook during his first term included establishing the Canada Child Benefit, legalizing medical assistance in dying, legalizing recreational marijuana through the Cannabis Act, attempting Senate appointment reform by establishing the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments, and establishing the federal carbon tax. In foreign policy, Trudeau's government negotiated trade deals such as the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, and signed the Paris Agreement on climate change. He was sanctioned by Canada's ethics commissioner for violating conflict of interest law regarding the Aga Khan affair, and again with the SNC-Lavalin affair.Trudeau's Liberal Party was reduced to a minority government in the 2019 federal election. His government responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, announced an "assault-style" weapons ban in response to the 2020 Nova Scotia attacks, and launched a national $10-a-day childcare program. He was investigated for a third time by the ethics commissioner for his part in the WE Charity scandal, but was cleared of wrongdoing. In the 2021 federal election, he led the Liberals to another minority government. In 2022, he invoked the Emergencies Act in response to the Freedom Convoy protests and responded to the Russian invasion of Ukraine by imposing sanctions on Russia and authorizing military aid to Ukraine. His party signed a confidence and supply agreement with the New Democratic Party (NDP) in early 2022, which resulted in the enactment of the Canadian Dental Care Plan for residents that meet a certain income threshold and a framework for national pharmacare; in late 2024, the NDP opted to terminate the agreement. In early 2025, in response to the second Trump tariffs, Trudeau announced 25% retaliatory tariffs on $30 billion worth of U. S. goods.Following the sudden resignation of deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland in December 2024 and an ensuing political crisis, Trudeau announced on January 6, 2025, that he would resign as both the prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party. He advised the governor general to prorogue parliament until March 24, while the party held a leadership contest; Trudeau remained leader until Mark Carney was chosen, after which Trudeau will resign as prime minister. He will also retire as an MP when the 44th Canadian Parliament is dissolved. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:30 UTC on Tuesday, 11 March 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Justin Trudeau on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Gregory.
Here are the 3 Big Things you need to know to start today— Number One— There are some members of the Canadian Parliament calling for a ban on Donald Trump—I mean a total ban on him even being allowed in the country—which is normal for a convicted felon by the way— Number Two— At MSNBC more cuts as Rachel Maddow sees her whole team get dumped—BUT did she offer to take a pay cut to keep them on the job—no, Hell no! I mean be serious! Number Three— I have identified a new debilitating illness afflicting those on the left in this country—it may be worse in some ways than Trump Derangement Syndrome—it is DOGE Derangement Syndrome—

The Hoover Project on China's Global Sharp Power held Hong Kong After the National Security Law on Tuesday, May 14 from 4-5:30pm PT. This event presented perspectives on the current political and civic climate in Hong Kong since the passage of the National Security Law on June 30, 2020 and the imposition of Article 23 on March 23, 2024. How have these developments fit into the broader history of the struggle for democracy in Hong Kong? What has changed in Hong Kong's once vibrant civil society? What is the latest on the trials of pro-democracy activists? How have diasporic advocates constructed a Hong Kong political identity in exile? Four panelists—Ambassador James Cunningham, the Chairman of the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong and former Consul General of the United States to Hong Kong and Macau (2005-2008); Sebastien Lai, a democracy advocate and son of jailed Hong Kong businessman and publisher Jimmy Lai; Sophie Richardson, the former China Director at Human Rights Watch; and Cherie Wong, the former leader of Alliance Canada Hong Kong (ACHK)—will discuss these issues and more in a conversation moderated by Hoover William L. Clayton Senior Fellow Larry Diamond. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Ambassador James B. Cunningham retired from government service at the end of 2014. He is currently a consultant, a non-resident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, an adjunct faculty member at Syracuse University's Maxwell School, and Board Chair of the Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation. He served as Ambassador to Afghanistan, Ambassador to Israel, Consul General in Hong Kong, and Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations. Ambassador Cunningham was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania and graduated magna cum laude from Syracuse University. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Asia Society, the National Committee on US-China Relations, and the American Academy of Diplomacy. Sebastien Lai leads the international campaign to free his father Jimmy Lai, the pro democracy activist and publisher currently jailed by the Hong Kong government. Having had international calls for his release from multiple states including the US and the UK, Jimmy Lai's ongoing persecution mirrors the rapid decline of human rights, press freedom and rule of law in the Chinese territory. Sophie Richardson is a longtime activist and scholar of Chinese politics, human rights, and foreign policy. From 2006 to 2023, she served as the China Director at Human Rights Watch, where she oversaw the organization's research and advocacy. She has published extensively on human rights, and testified to the Canadian Parliament, European Parliament, and the United States Senate and House of Representatives. Dr. Richardson is the author of China, Cambodia, and the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence (Columbia University Press, Dec. 2009), an in-depth examination of China's foreign policy since 1954's Geneva Conference, including rare interviews with Chinese policy makers. She speaks Mandarin, and received her doctorate from the University of Virginia and her BA from Oberlin College. Her current research focuses on the global implications of democracies' weak responses to increasingly repressive Chinese governments, and she is advising several China-focused human rights organizations. Cherie Wong (she/her) is a non-partisan policy analyst and advocate. Her influential leadership at Alliance Canada Hong Kong (ACHK), a grassroots community organization, had garnered international attention for its comprehensive research publications and unwavering advocacy in Canada-China relations. ACHK disbanded in November 2023. Recognized for her nuanced and progressive approach, Cherie is a sought-after authority among decision-makers, academics, journalists, researchers, and policymakers. Cherie frequently appeared in parliamentary committees and Canadian media as an expert commentator, speaking on diverse public policy issues such as international human rights, foreign interference, and transnational repression. Larry Diamond is the William L. Clayton Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, the Mosbacher Senior Fellow in Global Democracy at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI), and a Bass University Fellow in Undergraduate Education at Stanford University. He is also professor, by courtesy, of political science and sociology at Stanford. He co-chairs the Hoover Institution's programs on China's Global Sharp Power and on Taiwan in the Indo-Pacific Region.

Since then, Alicia and her sister have become unwitting authorities on the subject of MAID, political advocates surrounding mental health, and are featured in the upcoming BBC documentary, “Better Off Dead?”Their opinions have been sought by the Canadian Parliament, as the country expands the availability of MAID, to include patients who are mentally ill. Alicia's upcoming memoir, "The Other Side of the Straight Jacket: A Journey Through Mental Health and the Flaws of Medical Assistance in Dying,” is set to release in 2024. Tune in for an engaging conversation as Alicia shares insights on resilience, mental health advocacy, and navigating life's complexities with courage and unity. As the clock ticks toward All Hallow's Eve, we'll wind down where we began in last month's episode of Breaking Walls, with the October 30th, 1957 episode of LIFE and the World on NBC. The October 14th LIFE Magazine cover featured Little Central High School in Arkansas; the October 21st cover featured American scientists plotting Sputnik's orbit; while the October 28th's cover featured Queen Elizabeth opening Canadian Parliament. This episode features a speech by poet Carl Sandburg and a rare interview with Frank Lloyd Wright, both speaking about Chicago. Both Sandberg and Wright spent significant time in Chicago. Sandburg was back in Chicago debuting a new poem about the city. His speech from the banquet by The Chicago Dynamic Committee, was recorded. Frank Lloyd Wright settled in Chicago shortly after the Great Fire of 1871. He was ninety at the time of this interview, and as passionate as ever. His Guggenheim Museum was under construction in New York, while he dreamed of a mile-high office building for Chicago. On October 29th, 1957, head of MGM, Louis B. Mayer died of leukemia. He was seventy-three. The next day, Variety Magazine carried his obituary. Although Mayer was often disliked and even feared by many, director Clarence Brown said, “he made more stars than all the rest of the producers in Hollywood put together. “He knew how to handle talent; he knew that to be successful, he had to have the most successful people in the business working for him. He was like Hearst in the newspaper business. He made an empire out of this thing.” However, both movie studios and the entertainment industry were rapidly changing. As was America. But the only way passed is through. So, forward we go, in time that is, in the next episode of Breaking Walls.

On Tuesday the United Nations Security Council welcomed a very surprising speaker — comedian and political commentator Jimmy Dore! Jimmy explained about how the United States was behind the Nord Stream bombing and the western media all fell in line to push the lie that Russia or Ukraine or someone else was responsible. Guest host Craig “Pasta” Jardula and Americans' Comedian Kurt Metzger discuss Jimmy's UN appearance and journalist Seymour Hersh's startling revelation that the Nord Stream bombing wasn't actually about the Ukraine War at all. Plus a segment on the inexplicable standing ovation offered by the entire Canadian Parliament to a 98-year-old former Ukrainian Nazi soldier Also featuring Mike MacRae! And phone calls from Chuck Schumer and Jake Tapper!
TODAY: we cook up a new American vigilante to wipe these filthy streets clean; then, we peer into the Jordan B Peterson Classically Liberal Discussion Facebook Group for some Discussion and Ideas and do not come back disappointed. Also: Putin makes the Canadian Parliament give a standing ovation to a 98 year old Nazi, and we examine both the apologia and apology of the aftermath. Finally: Trump woke up this morning and got himself a gun. Well, he didnt. But you can f*cking imagine what it would be like if he did. Liberal head explosions in 3...2...1... President Biden and his campaign are working on a critical project for his re-election bid: Make sure he doesn't trip. You read that correctly. The most powerful man in the world and his campaign are focusing on making sure he can properly walk while remaining upright. Don't worry, they assure us old Joe can make it another four years. JPMorgan Chase agreed on Tuesday to pay the U.S. Virgin Islands $75 million to settle a lawsuit alleging the Wall Street behemoth enabled Jeffrey Epstein's sex trafficking ring by ignoring red flags related to Epstein's accounts at the investment bank. The reality is that someone knows exactly what happened on that island, and until we get the full story, anything else is simply a band-aid preventing us from getting true justice. Miss Universe Zimbabwe is causing quite the controversy because she's white. The winning contestant, Brooke Bruk-Jackson, received lots of backlash online because apparently only black people are allowed to win the Miss Universe Zimbabwe crown. Getting this mad about something so petty is why people no longer take any of these activists and people pushing racial equity seriously. The Canadian Parliament gave a standing ovation for a Ukrainian who fought against the Russians. Only problem is that he was fighting with the Nazis and was a member of the SS. The clowns at MSNBC are so utterly delusional, they're actually openly comparing Trump to, who else, but Hitler?!? And they're doing this at the very same time the Canadian Parliament gave a standing ovation to a freaking Nazi soldier! Highlights: “The actual honoring of a former Nazi soldier takes a back seat to the virtue signaling accusations against the soon-to-be 47th president of these United States!" “Steve Schmidt openly championed the indictments against Trump, declaring, in unison with the uniparty media, ‘no one is above the law'! Of course, I thought presumption of innocence was a fundamental American value, but apparently, not for the likes of Schmidt.” “We've actually had critical studies of far-leftists like Lobachevsky's come to the conclusion that these people are not merely mentally ill. He really believed these people were psychopaths!” Timestamps: [04:17] Steve Schmidt's unhinged rant comparing Trump to Hitler [05:49] Trump's promise to come after the corrupt NBC [08:10] The psychology behind MSNBC's latest rant Resources: Show your support for President Trump with his new cards HERE: https://www.physicaltrumpcards.com/trump-cards-collection-podcast Nature's Morphine? Liberty Dispatch ~ September 26, 2023WHO ARE THE REAL FASCISTS? In this episode, hosts Andrew and Matthew compare the MSM coverage of the 1 Million March 4 Children to reality. No surprise the media lies and obfuscates. Sadly, Canada's Conservative Party proves they are indeed cons. Finally, all 338 MPs serenade a nazi soldier with raucous applause during Volodymyr Zelensky's fundraising trip to parliament, an applause only dwarfed by the profanation of God's Law in passing Bill C-4. The indictment is a steaming pile of dog poop. And Klaus Schwab has penetrated Canadian parliament.
If it is true, as Richard Weaver famously put it, that “ideas have consequences,” it is also true that bad ideas have victims. On no other contemporary issue today is the connection between a bad idea and its victims clearer than assisted suicide. In no other nation today are the bad ideas and their victims more aggressively embraced than in Canada. In a lengthy and powerful essay at The Atlantic this month, David Brooks exposed just how monstrous Canada's so-called “medical aid in dying” regime has become since it was enacted in 2016. Originally, Canada only permitted the request for medical aid in dying to those with serious illness, in advanced or irreversible decline, unbearable physical or mental suffering, or whose death was “reasonably foreseeable.” The criteria are vague enough. Since the law went into effect, however, the number of Canadians killed annually has gone from 1,000 to over 10,000. In 2021, one in thirty Canadian deaths was by assisted suicide, and only 4% of those who applied to die were turned down. Were all these people terminally ill or suffering from serious and irreversible conditions? Hardly. In fact, Brooks tells the story of a man whose only physical condition was hearing loss yet who was “put to death” over the objections of his family. Another patient had fibromyalgia and leukemia yet wrote that “the suffering I experience is mental suffering, not physical. I think if more people cared about me, I might be able to handle the suffering caused by my physical illnesses alone.” One otherwise healthy 37-year-old who suffers from schizoaffective disorder and is unemployed said, “logistically, I really don't have a future. … I'm not going anywhere.” As of Brooks' writing, that man was awaiting approval for assisted suicide. Simply put, Canadians who need help are instead being helped to kill themselves because they're depressed, lonely, or mentally ill. And the slope keeps getting slipperier. Brooks described patients who have been pressured by doctors and hospital staff into killing themselves to avoid medical bills. Earlier this year, the Canadian Parliament's Special Committee on Medical Assistance in Death recommended extending the program to “mature minors” as young as twelve. Brooks observed, this is what happens “when a society takes individualism to its logical conclusion.” The core question “is no longer, ‘Should the state help those who are suffering at the end of life die?'” It is now whether any degree of suffering is worth living with. He concludes, “The lines between assisted suicide for medical reasons … and straight-up suicide are blurring.” Brooks clearly identified the bad idea behind these victims: what he calls “autonomy-based liberalism.” In its place, he proposed something called “gifts-based liberalism,” which acknowledges that each of us is a “receiver of gifts … including the gift of life itself.” That life, Brooks insists, is “sacred” because each of us is endowed with “dignity,” and society has a duty to say, “No, suicide is out of bounds. … You don't have the right to make a choice you will never be able to revisit. … We are responsible for one another.” At least, that is, in most cases, according to Brooks. He is so close to getting this one right and articulating the sanctity of life in the way Christianity does. That's why it's frustrating that Brooks seems to think it's possible to climb back up the slippery slope and re-establish assisted suicide only for “extreme” cases. He writes, “I don't have great moral qualms about assisted suicide for people who are suffering intensely in the face of imminent death.” But, David, the moment you begin setting criteria for when a life is no longer worth living, no longer sacred, and a person no longer deserving of love instead of lethal injection, you let the bad idea that led to all those victims right back in the cultural door! For all his admirable reporting on how bad it has gotten in Canada, Brooks never gets around to answering his core question: Why did Canada's “medical aid in dying” law–which supposedly limited victims to only those he agrees should have the right to die–become government-sponsored mass suicide in just seven years? The answer is simple: because the value of human life is not based on any extrinsic quality. Period. It's instead based on the fact that humans are made in God's image. We belong to Him, not to ourselves. This is ultimately why the slope from accepting some suicides to all suicides is so slippery. It's also why “gifts-based liberalism,” until it acknowledges the one who gave us life, will never be able to keep its footing or help those intent on throwing away the very gift.
