Lecture two of a series on the 'Doctrine of Atonement', delivered by Dr. Mildred Bangs Wynkoop during the fall of 1979 at Nazarene Theological Seminary. Dr. Wynkoop was a remarkable voice in the Church of the Nazarene—a writer, pastor, missionary, and theologian whose influence still resonates today. Her most celebrated works are Foundations of Wesleyan-Arminian Theology and A Theology of Love: The Dynamic of Wesleyanism, both of which continue to shape contemporary Wesleyan thought. Her ministry journey spanned the globe and the academy. She pastored churches in California and Oregon, taught at George Fox Evangelical Seminary, and served as the founding president of Japan Nazarene Theological Seminary. She also taught in Taiwan before returning to the United States to serve as Professor of Theology at Trevecca Nazarene College (1966–1976) and later at Nazarene Theological Seminary (1976–1979). Throughout her century-long life and ministry, Dr. Wynkoop met Phineas Bresee, studied under H. Orton Wiley and Olive Winchester, and left a profound impact on generations of students and colleagues across four Nazarene institutions—having studied at Point Loma Nazarene University and Northwest Nazarene University, and having taught at Trevecca Nazarene University and Nazarene Theological Seminary. *These recordings, captured initially in 1979, have been substantially restored. While Dr. Wynkoop's voice has been clarified, student questions during Q&A segments may be difficult to discern. Her responses, however, remain clear and impactful.* Lifelong Learning Code: 80890 Click here to learn about Lifelong Learning
This week, we welcome Dr. Dan Boone—respected pastor, author, and president of Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville—as he unpacks Lie #4 in our Fake News series: “You can pray away anxiety.”While prayer is a powerful part of our faith, the Bible shows us that peace doesn't come from praying away our problems, but from praying through them. Drawing on Philippians 4, Dr. Boone challenges us to go deeper than surface-level spirituality and cultivate a resilient joy, steady trust, and renewed thought life—especially in anxious times. If you've ever felt like you were doing all the “right things” but still couldn't shake the weight of worry, this message will meet you with both truth and hope.#FakeNews #CrossBridgeChurch #DanBoone #Trevecca #FaithOverFear #Philippians4 #PeaceInChrist

We had Dr. Tim Gaines on the podcast last fall, after I discovered him while speaking at a Salvation Army event. Tim is a professor of religion at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, where he teaches courses in theology and ethics and directs the graduate program in theology and biblical studies. He also serves as a pastor at Trevecca Community Church and as the director of The Center for Wesleyan-Holiness Formation, which serves the Church by advocating for scholarship in the Wesleyan tradition. Dr. Gaines has coauthored and co-edited multiple previous titles, including Walking the Theological Life, Kings & Presidents (a book on politics and the Kingdom of God), and a book simply called Christian Ethics. I knew when we talked last time that we'd want him back so this time we'll talk about moral formation, ethics, the reason for theology, and even get a second dose of secularity.
Addressing mental health in college is extremely important. Today we're talking to Chris Troutt, LMFT, a Christian family therapist who brings a unique background to her clients. She and her late husband, Burt, are parents to twelve children and have twenty-five grandchildren. Chris is a biological mother, an adoptive mother, a stepmother, and a foster mother; she brings both education and personal perspective into the therapy session. Chris believes strongly in systems theory and in the power of God working in a person's life. It is her desire to help others during their journey. Chris specializes in Prenatal Exposure to Alcohol and Drugs, Trauma and Attachment Disorders. Her work with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders is especially meaningful to her as a parent of a child diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Chris has a Master's Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Trevecca Nazarene University, Nashville, Tennessee. Chris is the co-founder and CEO of the Papillion Center for FASD with offices in Gallatin, Tennessee and Paducah, Kentucky. She speaks nationally and internationally on Understanding Children and Families from Hard Places, including Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. In episode 517 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out what are Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and why Chris is so passionate about it, what are the realities of neuro-biological outcomes for trauma in a child's life, what opportunities there are to heal after that trauma at a young age, common signs that a college student might need to seek help for their mental health, how students can manage the pressure of social media while maintaining a healthy self-image, how students can develop resilience and cope with rejection, advice on dealing with imposter syndrome, tips for managing test anxiety or performance stress, and how students learn to set boundaries with friends, family, and professors to protect their mental health. Enjoy!

This episode is about theology. Theology can be a big, intimidating topic for some people. Maybe you think theology doesn't really apply to you, that it's a topic for other people to think about and you'll just hear about it from your pastor or priest. Well what if we were to tell you that theology is truly, genuinely not scary but instead something so intimately associated with you and who you are that you can think about and exercise theology in your own life. So the question for today is how can I walk the theological life? In this episode host Jason Wieland is joined by Dr. Timothy Gaines, associate professor of religion at Trevecca Nazarene University and author of the new book, Walking the Theological Life. In this conversation, Tim and Jason talk about what theology is and why it's not as scary as it sounds, the difference between living theologically and living secularly, what we can learn about walking theologically through the lives of people in the Bible, and much more.Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland, Saddleback Church Content Development Pastor. Happy birthday My Seminary Life! In this year's birthday special, I sit down with Dr. Jonathan Roy of Trevecca Nazarene University to discuss his dissertation on the role shame has on counselors. It is understandable that those stepping into a counseling environment to receive help may feel some shame in their life, but what about those who are providing the help? What are the mental health professionals to do when they feel unqualified or inadequate to help a person? Dr. Roy walks us through his dissertation exploring those topics. He also gives us helpful definitions to understand the difference between shame, guilt, and humiliation, and why being self-aware is so crucial for a counselor. Stop and think about five people outside of your family who have impacted your life the most. Are they all in the same age range as you? My guess is that those people represent a wide range of ages. Intergenerational connections are vital to our growth as individuals and the health of our communities. In a world that is fractured and compartmentalized, we can uniquely grow through relationships with people in different phases of life. I asked my friend, Dr. Michael Johnson, to come and share with us about intergenerational connections. Michael has been serving at Trevecca Nazarene University for thirty-four years, and through his experience in higher education and deep investment in the Church, Michael has valued and prioritized intergenerational relationships. I met Michael and his wife, Sarah, when I was in college. They became cheerleaders for me and I know that they've done this for countless others. I couldn't think of a better person to help us lean into a conversation about the gift of intergenerational connections. —— I'd love to connect with you throughout the week on instagram @carlycommunicates. People who identify as Enneagram 1s are known to be ethical, responsible, and principled people. Enneagram 1s are often called “Perfectionists,” but a more wholistic name for these amazing individuals is the “Reformers.” Enneagram 1s see the potential in the world and commit themselves to seeing the good come to fruition in their own lives, their work, and in the world around them. One of the downsides that Enneagram 1s experience is the presence of their inner critic, who often dominates one's inner dialogue — reminding the Enneagram 1 what is wrong, where they have fallen short, and what they need to do to be better. Enneagram 1s find the inner critic to be deflating and exhausting. My friend, Trevor Lubiens is my guest on the podcast this week, and he will be chatting with us about: What it is like to be an Enneagram 1, How to utilize the voice of the inner critic in healthy ways, and How God has used the Enneagram to deepen his prayer life. Trevor and his wife Jamie have been friends of mine since I was in college and Trevor and I had a chance to work together for several years on the same church staff. Trevor is now the lead pastor of Midtown Church, a new church plant in Boise. Trevor is a lifelong student, avid reader, golf pro (in his dreams), and sushi enthusiast. More than anything, Trevor is passionate about seeing people grow into more engaged and loving followers of Jesus. Trevor graduated from Trevecca Nazarene University with a degree in Business and also worked as the university's Creative Director. Trevor has spent the last 15 years in church ministry and is currently working to reimagine church and what it looks like to be a follower of Jesus in the 21st century. Trevor and Jamie, have been married for over 15 years, and they have two kids, Kellom & Taiya. They moved back to Boise from Nashville 6 years ago and love serving in their respective fields to bring the love of Jesus to every person they meet. To hear more from Trevor, check out the Midtown Podcast: Conversations for Curious People.

Welcome to episode seventy-three of New Creation Conversations. It's a joy for me today to get to have a conversation with one of my favorite young scholars and ministers, Dr. Henry Spaulding III – better known to his family and friends as “Hank.” Hank is the Associate Campus Pastor and Assistant Professor of Theology at Mount Vernon Nazarene University. He's an alum of Trevecca Nazarene University, has Master's Degree in Theological Studies from Duke Divinity School, and has a PhD in Christian Ethics from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Hank and I talk about the unique challenges of campus ministry, but we also talk about his two writing projects – one out and one in process. The project that is out is The Just and Loving Gaze of God with Us: Paul's Apocalyptic Political Theology (published by Wipf and Stock). This book is an edited version of Hank's dissertation work and is an interesting look at the recent interest in the Apostle Paul by non-Christian political scholars and reflects on what they get right but also what they often misunderstand about Paul's political theology. The project that is forthcoming is Iconoclastic Sex – it is a quantitative and theological study of the problem of sex trafficking and Christian sexual ethics. Both are interesting works, and both are deeply connected to the vision of a new creation. It is always encouraging to me to get to connect with young scholars. I'm deeply thankful for those like Hank who have a passion for deep theological reflection and for church ministry. I'm thankful that people like him are picking up the baton and carrying it forward.
Welcome to episode seventy-one of New Creation Conversations. I apologize that we missed an episode last week, we were hosting a denominational conference at our church last week, and it took up all my extra space last week. The good news is that it gave me the opportunity to sit down with a couple of the guests at the conference and have face-to-face conversations with them about their writing and work. I get to share one of those conversations with you today. Rev. Caleb Cray Haynes is church planter and co-pastor with his wife, Emily, at Kalaeo Church in Nashville. He is also the co-founder of Nazarenes for Creation Care. Caleb grew up in the hills of rural Tennessee where the love of God's creation grew deep roots in his early life and experience. Tending to gardens and wandering in the woods are still part of Caleb's story. Following a call to ministry, he attended Trevecca Nazarene University and received a degree in Religion and Philosophy. Afterward, Caleb served as a volunteer Nazarene missionary through Mission Corp in Mainz, Germany, aiding in church planting with (one of our previous guests Philip Zimmerman) Church in Action. He is currently working on a Master's Degree in Theology and Ecology from Nazarene Theological College in Manchester, UK.We focus our conversation not only on his work with Nazarenes for Creation Care but also on his recently published book, Garbage Theology: The Unseen World of Waste and What It Means for the Salvation of Every Person, Every Place, and Every Thing. It's not only a thoughtful book but an important conversation that – as those created to be reflections of God's care and dominion of creation – the church desperately needs to have. I'm really thankful for young leaders like Caleb helping us have that conversation, and I'm glad you've joined us for this great conversation. Here is my New Creation Conversation with Pastor Caleb Cray Haynes.

Voices In My Head (The Rick Lee James Podcast) Episode 467 The Jesus Music with John J. Thompson On this episode I'm joined by John J Thompson, former Associate Dean of Trevecca Nazarene University's School of Music in Nashville, Tennessee. He's a speaker, producer, author, artist, and the founder of the podcast “True Tunes.” He is an expert on all things Contemporary Christian Music (CCM). As a consultant and historian he was interviewed for the new documentary “The Jesus Music Film”, which is now steaming on Hulu. “The Jesus Music” interviews some of Christian music's most recognizable stars, including Amy Grant, TobyMac, Kirk Franklin, Michael W. Smith, Michael Tait, Lauren Daigle and more. The film retells a nostalgic history of “Jesus music” — which would later be called contemporary Christian music. “The Jesus Music” offers an insight to the lives and careers of some of Christian music's most talented creators while legitimately criticizing churches for their lack of support and discussing the problem of racial segregation in Christian music. I invited John to have a visit on the podcast today to dive deeper into the conversation that Film initiates.
