You know the look: the blank stare, the shrugged shoulders, the quiet "I don't care" that shows up no matter how engaging the lesson or activity is. When students feel apathetic, it can be one of the most discouraging challenges in the elementary classroom. But apathy isn't a lack of ability; it's a disconnect. In today's episode, I take a deeper look at why this is happening and share practical, simple strategies you can start using with your apathetic students right away. There's a moment every elementary teacher experiences - the one where a behavior repeats, a parent asks a question, or an administrator says, "Can you tell me when this started?". Suddenly, you're replaying weeks of memories in your head, wishing you had written it down. Documentation may not feel like teaching, but it's one of the most powerful tools you have to protect your time, your students, and yourself. In today's episode, I'm sharing clear guidelines for documentation, along with practical ideas for creating a system that's manageable and sustainable throughout the year. Voices in My Head Podcast – Episode 606: Steele Croswhite Captured By Grace: 20 Years of Songs, Grief, and Gospel In this episode of Voices In My Head, I talk with Steele Croswhite—founder of the worship collective The Rock Music and pastor at The Rock Church in Salt Lake City, Utah—about the 20-year deluxe edition of their seminal debut, Captured By Grace. Recorded originally in a humble garage studio as a brand-new church of 30 people was learning what it means to be “interested in God, but not religion,” these songs have now been reimagined and newly recorded two decades later. Captured By Grace (20 Year Deluxe Edition) Steele shares his story of moving from a secular rock career—touring with big-name artists—to having his life upended by the grace of Jesus in a small local church. We talk about what it's like to do ministry and make worship music in Utah, where less than 3% of the population is evangelical, and how The Rock Church relates to its largely Latter-day Saint neighbors with clarity about Jesus and grace, but without contempt. Steele walks us through the creative and spiritual process of re-recording the album with a seasoned team, updated production, and the freedom to ask, “What does this song want to be now?”—all while staying faithful to the original heartbeat: proclaiming the transforming grace of Jesus in one of the most religious, but often least grace-filled, places in the country. A Journey Through the Clouds: Reflections on Humanity's PathIn a world where the skyline meets the clouds, two souls find themselves pondering the mysteries of existence. As they ascend to the 86th floor, the view of New York City sprawls beneath them, a testament to human achievement and the complexities of life. But what happens when the streets below are empty, and the world seems to have paused? The View from Above: Michael and Eve's journey to the observation deck is more than just a physical ascent; it's a metaphorical rise above the chaos of everyday life. From this vantage point, the city is a tapestry of stories, each building a chapter in the book of humanity. Yet, as they gaze upon the vastness, a sense of solitude creeps in, prompting questions about the nature of existence and the fate of mankind.A World Paused: The narrative takes a turn as the couple realizes the streets are eerily silent. The absence of people and the stillness of the cityscape evoke a sense of unease. Is this a temporary pause, or has something more profound occurred? The silence becomes a canvas for introspection, as they contemplate the possibility of being the last remnants of humanity.Reflections on Creation and Destruction: Eve's musings on the creation of life and the potential for its end are both haunting and thought-provoking. Her reflections challenge the reader to consider the delicate balance between creation and destruction, and the role of a higher power in the grand scheme of things. Could it be that the world has been reset, leaving only a few to start anew? As the sun sets and darkness envelops the city, Michael and Eve are left with more questions than answers. Their journey is a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing each moment. In a world where the future is uncertain, their story serves as a beacon of hope and a call to action for humanity to strive for a better tomorrow.Subscribe Now: Join us on this journey of discovery and reflection. Voices in My Head Podcast – Episode 605: Christmas Cards - A Christmas Sermon by Rick Lee James Voices in My Head (The Rick Lee James Podcast) Episode 605: The God Who Lets Us Carry Him In this special Advent/Christmas episode, chaplain, songwriter, and host Rick Lee James shares a chapel message from Springfield Regional Medical Center titled “The God Who Lets Us Carry Him.” Drawing from Jeremiah 10:5 and Matthew 2:13–18, Rick explores the tension between: Idols that must be carried because they are lifeless And Jesus, God in the flesh, who chooses to be carried as a vulnerable baby Rather than the soft, sentimental scenes we see on many Christmas cards, Rick invites us into the real world Jesus was born into—a world of: A small, ordinary village (Bethlehem) Roman occupation and political fear Herod's brutality and the Massacre of the Innocents Refugee families fleeing in the night Grieving mothers and real human sorrow From there, he proclaims the hope of Christmas: that God does not wait for a perfect world to show up, but enters the world as it actually is—vulnerable, dependent, “carry-able” in human arms. This is a God who walks at three miles an hour, slowing down to move at human speed, to stop, to touch, to weep, to heal, and even to entrust Himself to us. Along the way, Rick reflects on: Jeremiah's image of idols as “scarecrows in a cucumber field” How idols only gain “power” when we give them our imagination Historical background on Herod the Great and Bethlehem's likely size The courage and defiant hope of a God who lets Himself be carried by Mary and Joseph The contrast between Hallmark-style Christmas and the raw honesty of the Gospel The episode concludes with Rick's original song “Christmas Cards,” a musical meditation on the parts of the story we don't usually see on our mantels—the fear, the flight, the soldiers in the streets—and the deeper hope that God is greater than the version of Christmas our cards describe. Scriptures referenced in this episode: Jeremiah 10:5 – “Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field; they cannot speak; they have to be carried because they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.” Matthew 2:13–18 – The flight into Egypt and the Massacre of the Innocents Highlights: Why a God who chooses to be carried is the opposite of a powerless idol How the first Christmas speaks hope into fear, grief, and injustice “A God small enough to be carried is a God big enough to save the world.” Closing performance of Rick's original song “Christmas Cards” Connect with Rick Lee James: Website: RickLeeJames.com Music & merch: search “Rick Lee James” on your favorite music platform Subscribe, rate, and review Voices in My Head wherever you listen to podcasts. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.”* Matthew 2:13–18 – The flight into Egypt and the Massacre of the InnocentsHighlights:* Why a God who chooses to be carried is the opposite of a powerless idol* How the first Christmas speaks hope into fear, grief, and injustice* “A God small enough to be carried is a God big enough to save the world.”* Closing performance of Rick's original song “Christmas Cards”Connect with Rick Lee James:* Website: RickLeeJames.com* Music & merch: search “Rick Lee James” on your favorite music platform* Subscribe, rate, and review Voices in My Head wherever you listen to podcasts.Get the Audiobook, Out of the Depths: A Songwriter's Journey Through the Psalms by your host, Rick Lee James, on Audible: https://www.audible.com/pd/B0F45G6KWH?qid=1744142727&sr=1-1&ref_pageloadid=not_applicable&pf_rd_p=83218cca-c308-412f-bfcf-90198b687a2f&pf_rd_r=KEDVV78ASDMS52WQFD7W&plink=3YmaWg4y0HJ0Cjfc&pageLoadId=IaamycyuJR519uYD&creativeId=0d6f6720-f41c-457e-a42b-8c8dceb62f2c&ref=a_search_c3_lProduct_1_1%20----more----Don't forget about our music sale on Bandcamp.Use the code “10off” on RickLeeJames.Bandcamp.com to get 10% off your purchase.Blessings,Rick Lee JamesEmail: Rick@RickLeeJames.comDon't forget about our music sale on Bandcamp.Use the code “10off” on RickLeeJames.Bandcamp.com to get 10% off your purchase.Blessings,Rick Lee JamesEmail: Rick@RickLeeJames.comBlessings,Rick Lee JamesGet the new song - Whatever You DoVINYL SALETHUNDER by Rick Lee JamesONLY $9.99. "It is never too late to start something new and to put your energy into something that you've loved your whole life, but you've never had time to focus on." Our hosts, Stephanie McCullough and Kevin Gaines, explore the strategic path to entrepreneurship in midlife with the Corporate Escape Sherpa herself, Tabatha Jones! After 30 years in corporate tech leadership, Tabatha made her leap at age 50 and now guides women through building profitable businesses before they leave their steady paychecks behind. "If it's not on your calendar, if it's not something you are focused on doing, it just becomes a someday, which becomes a never, which becomes regret." Tabatha's approach challenges the typical entrepreneurial narrative. Rather than dramatic leaps of faith, she advocates for methodical preparation while your corporate job finances your dream. She saved three years of expenses before leaving, far beyond the typical 6-12 months, and systematically eliminated debt, paid off her house, and even installed solar panels to reduce future living costs. Her "Freedom Framework" starts with the crucial question of "why", and she insists on going at least five layers deep. "When you stay at that surface level why... it's not enough to keep you going," Tabatha explains. From there, entrepreneurs identify their "what" (skills and gifts), "who" (ideal clients), and finally "how" (the business model). In that order! Chances are, you need a financial reality check as a prerequisite to creating your freedom plan. Tabatha has clients highlight every expense on their credit card statements, hunting for "money leaks" like forgotten subscriptions. One client discovered three gym memberships she'd forgotten about. Another realized her pricing meant she'd need 100 clients monthly just to break even! Most powerfully, Tabatha reminds us that midlife career changes require different strategies than younger transitions. While thirty-somethings can "dip their toe" in entrepreneurship and return to corporate easily, the job search for midlifers now takes 8-12 months. Building your business foundation while employed isn't just smart. It's essential! Exploring the cultural history of surveillance practices of the Securitate, Romania's secret police during its communist period, the book blends biographical details in a historical inquiry to establish the concepts of psuchegraphy, dossierveillance, and banalization of evil in the study of Securitate Archives. In the context of communist Romania under the reign of Nicolae Ceauşescu (1965-89), dossierveillance was a type of surveillance that stresses the miasmic effect of Securitate dossiers in the daily life of Romanians. Centered around the analysis of this concept, Dossierveillance, Collaboration, and Fear in Society: The Saga of a Journey Through the Securitate Archives and Beyond (Routledge, 2025) presents a unique account of the surveillance practices of totalitarian and authoritarian regimes, expanding its relevance to fear in the current neo-liberal societies. There comes a moment when even the most passionate teachers whisper to themselves, “I don't know if I can do this anymore". The exhaustion, the negative interactions, and the weight of it all can feel overwhelming. And while it's easy to dwell on the negative (trust me, I have!), since that noise is often louder and takes up more space in your mind, I want you to do the opposite. In this episode, I share how shifting your mindset and focusing on the positive can help you regain control of your emotions - and why it's so important to surround yourself with amazing people. Alex Zakaras, author of FREEDOM FOR ALL - Episode 601 - Voices in my Head (the Rick Lee James Podcast) Today on Voices in My Head, we're diving into some big questions about freedom, democracy, and the future of liberal society. My guest is Alex Zakaras, professor of political science at the University of Vermont and author of several works on American political thought, including his brand-new book, Freedom for All: What a Liberal Society Could Be, releasing on October 28th from Yale University Press, is both a defense and a reimagining of liberalism—what Zakaras calls a “radical liberalism.” In this work, he argues that the idea of freedom, once central to the liberal tradition, has been co-opted and corrupted, turned into something that benefits the powerful at the expense of working families. He challenges us to see how profound inequalities in wealth, power, and status have broken America's social contract, fueling division and resentment. But he also offers a bold vision of renewal: building countervailing power, revitalizing unions, reimagining corporations, and even rethinking how we approach climate change and media in a truly democratic society. When parents question your decisions as a teacher, it can feel like your professionalism is on trial, but it's actually an opportunity. Instead of bracing for conflict, what if you leaned in with clarity, calm, and confidence? As the excitement of a new school year wears off, new and challenging situations often arise. That's why I created the September Survival Series; to give you practical tips, strategies, and encouragement to remind you that everything will work out. In the first two episodes, I shared how to reset your routines and procedures and how to manage stress during those first hectic weeks. In this final episode, I'm focusing on what to do when parents question you, and how to handle those situations with confidence and professionalism. Every September, teachers get swept into the “stress spiral” - the endless to-do lists, stacks of papers to grade, and the constant feeling of barely keeping your head above water. But what if this season didn't have to drain you? In last week's episode, I kicked off the September Survival Series, which highlights how teachers can regain control and re-establish routines and procedures with confidence once the realities of the school year set in. The challenge is that the stress spiral often takes hold before most teachers even realize they're in it. That's why, in episode two of this series, I define what the September stress spiral is and share practical ideas and mindset shifts you can use before it takes over your classroom. Episode 5 - Fr. Gallagher helps us to understand the Dark Night as described by St. John of the Cross and how it differs from the experience of Spiritual Desolation. He also addresses the Dark Night metaphor and how it is used to describe some spiritual experiences that are not necessarily the same in meaning as that set forth by St. John of the Cross and how that can be confusing for some.
