In this episode, Jesse and Lindsey talk through how Type 2s tend to relate to God. Then they interview musician Joy Ike. Joy talks about how she has often viewed service to be transactional and how that has carried over into her work as a musician. In this episode, Stephen Roach and Ned Bustard talk with singer/songwriter Joy Ike about Chapter 2: Inspiration. This conversation covers how we may posture our lives to receive inspiration and how we respond when inspiration seems absent. Joy Ike is a full-time singer-songwriter and artist coach based out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Born to Nigerian immigrants, the singer/songwriter's music, voice, and writing have drawn comparisons to female musicians such as Nina Simone, Laura Nyro, and Regina Spektor. But her percussive piano-playing and soaring vocals give homage to her African upbringing. As a singer/songwriter/storyteller, artist and public speaker, Joy believes that music and art have the power to transform hearts and connect people who would otherwise be strangers at best and enemies at worst. As an artist coach and former publicist, she teaches workshops on branding, marketing, and using your authentic story to engage your audience. Joy is passionate about art as a vehicle for change, empowerment and empathy and sees art as a way to openly and thoughtfully wrestle with the uncertainty of life. We're excited to share this breakout session led by Joy Ike, recorded at Forefront Festival '22: Making New. It's called The Birds & The Bees: Pollination in an Age of Politicization. In an era of political correctness, identity politics, and fear-based messaging, dealing in hope can feel daunting. What does cultural transformation look like in the middle of so much deterioration? If the Gospel is real and true, then surely there is a light at the end of this very long tunnel, right? Join Joy Ike as she shares reflections on how we can plant good seeds and watch them grow…how we can spread those wild (kingdom) oats and witness the abundant goodness of our God in the land of the living.

Wear is the Love, Episode 8 This week's episode is chill (pun intended, which will make sense when you listen to the episode) because Michael just got back from a lot of travel. We enjoyed discussing The Atlantic article featured below about parenting and perfectionism. Episode notes: Get your tickets to the That Sounds Fun Tour here. February 17th in Philadelphia, 730pm As always, if you like this podcast, like this newsletter, you should consider supporting us! The Top 5 articles for your week: “Let Your Kids Be Bad at Things” (The Atlantic) Because this essay is a bit more nuanced than its title, and it's pretty hilarious, but it asks the question: do we ever stop caring about what other people think? “Dear Sweethearts: Don't tell me I ‘GOT THIS'” (Washington Post) Because Christine Emba tells it like it is: toxic positivity from the makers of sweethearts and M&Ms won't solve our societal ills. “The search for lost slave ships led this diver on an extraordinary journey” (National Geographic) Because some estimate around 1,000 ships sunk during the mid-Atlantic slave trade, and one diving group is helping to preserve artifacts [and history] from these ships. “Grow Deep, Not Wide” (Comment Magazine) Because the entire new issue of Comment Magazine is beautiful and ruminates on the idea of “gift logic,” but my favorite essay in the bunch is from Joy Ike on what it was like to open up free painting on her porch in her Philadelphia neighborhood. “How to Make a Deal With Putin” (Foreign Affairs) Because Michael McFaul, a former ambassador to Russia proposes this bold solution to the current Ukraine crisis because it could de-escalate tensions and provide a door for the energizing of many other US-Russia agreements: “Biden should seize the diplomatic offensive and counter with a comprehensive, grand bargain for enhancing European security. Call it “Helsinki 2.0.” This agreement could refresh and modernize the Helsinki Accords signed during the Cold War, which stabilized the continent even as U.S.-Soviet competition grew in other parts of the world. It could resuscitate and amend defunct arms control agreements and provide a bigger framework for European security, and in the process help solve the issues surrounding Ukraine.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/wear-we-are/support

Create, cultivate and connect are words that carry special meaning for Joy Ike. They are the basis for a music coaching and mentoring program she calls Cultivators. Her professional background in PR and marketing enables Joy to offer unique perspective to the emerging artists with whom she works. She's also a freelance writer, which includes articles and blog posts for Bandzoogle. We recorded this conversation in late December of last year 2020, at which time I was on the cusp of releasing my first single ‘On Top Of The World.' It was the perfect time to ask what she sees in artists who are better at getting their work out into the world. Her response to this line of questioning wasn't exactly what I expected, yet it was enlightening. Also in this conversation, I attempt to understand what got her from publishing and PR to music artist and ultimately to artist consultant. We also discuss her strict childhood, house concerts, zoom concerts, her single Wearing Love (new at the time of our conversation), her percussive musicality and more. Joy is herself a very talented singer musician. I love her voice in fact. Check out her work at JoyIke.com. Please visit UnstarvingMusician.com for related links and episode transcript. We talk in this episode with musician and songwriter Joy Ike. Currently based in Philadelphia (after moving from Pittsburgh), Joy’s latest album, “Bigger Than Your Box”, released in 2018, is a wonderful record. Joy talks about the Nigerian praise music that was the soundtrack to her childhood and how its percussive sounds influence her songwriting, her interesting on and off relationship with the piano, and ideas she has for her next project, which may turn out to be a spoken word album. We hear about the making of the delightful video for her interpretation of “Won’t You Be My Neighbor”, the Mr. Rogers theme. Joy is also generous enough to share her thoughts on current events shaking the United States, the Black Lives Matter movement and the George Floyd killing.

On today’s episode…I interview Joy Ike. Joy is a renowned singer-songwriter based in Philadelphia, PA. Joy began writing and playing songs in college when music was merely a hobby. Eventually, hobby turned into passion. In 2008, she left her day job to pursue a full-time career in music. Since then, Joy has toured all over the country. Her music has also been featured on radio stations, such as NPR. Suffice it to say, leaving her 9-5 paid off very well. Hang with us as we chat about her recent single, “All The Time In The World” highlighting the importance of community in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. We also discuss adjusting to new norms, staying creative, and processing America’s racial tensions as musicians.Support the show (https://ko-fi.com/jordanchavous)
