James was born in Bridgeport Connecticut on March 28, 1975 to Donald & Elaine Norkawich and from there the story begins. From the age of 3, James had shown interest in the chord organ, so his grandfather Albert Kaufman ( who played organ by ear and formed the first amatuer society in Connecticut CVTOS - The Connecticut Valley Theatre Organ Society.) James at the age of 5, started studying with Verelli Music Studios in Bridgeport Connecticut. After studying a few years on the piano he then began intensive studies in organ with Frank Markham from Westport Music located in Westport Connecticut. Throughout grammar school and grammar school James became proficient in both piano and organ. From the age of 9-14, James had won numerous awards such as the coveted WICC 600 am talent contest, was featured in many newspapers and local events that featured up and coming artists. When James attended high school he was accepted in a program in the arts which in addition to your high school day it was comprised of going to The University of Bridgeport and studying Jazz Theory & Composition and Midi Studies with industry professionals in the field. The program was called Regional Center For The Arts. Regional Center For The Arts went from a small program consisting of 40 students to over 100 currently and is now part of CES in Trumbull Connecticut. In the summer of 1993, James was awarded a full 4 year scholarship in music to the University of Bridgeport and earned a BA in Music Performance and then was then awarded a scholarship for his Masters (MA in Music Education) Even though James was accepted to 5 of the 6 colleges in music he felt that The University Of Bridgeport offered the best skill set based on the schools history. Post college, James had worked in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut in radio on air an off as well as streaming on a platform online from 2006-2011 reaching a world audience of 6 million listeners in one single year. Kenny Loggins Asked Eugene Ruffolo Same Question I Did. How Come I Don't Know You?

The Debbie Nigro Show

If You Don't Know About Eugene Ruffolo I'm Hoping You Willl Now.  He's not just any talent.  Eugene is a prolific and deeply personal songwriter.  The world could use more of him. His music calms people down. A mutual friend who went to school with him in NY back when, had no clue about his talent until a zoom decades later during Covid. He then became addicted to his music and kept insisting I needed to listen. So, I did. I swear I could feel his music in my veins. I was taken aback by the beauty of his vocal gift and the genius of his songwriting. As good as any famous musical artist I've ever enjoyed. I honestly was shocked I had not heard about him. Apparently even Kenny Loggins was shocked he didn't know about him after both collaborated on a segment of someone else's record.   In addition to his own songwriting, Eugene has shared studios and stages with many famous artists, drawn to his unique vocal talents. People like Garth Brooks and Tony Bennett and Kenny Loggins, Run-DMC, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Livingston Taylor, Spyro Gyra, just to name a few.  He covers themes like forgiveness, the precious bonds of friendship, the search for existential truth. Among his many worldwide accolades his music has been referred to as “the jewel of folk pop' .You'll hear for yourself if you take a few minutes to listen to this podcast of our live in-studio bonding session. Eugene even took a little musical departure recently to write and record a collection of Italian songs celebrating his Italian heritage and his love of Mediterranean and pop music, folk music. And he wrote a classy little book to along with it, on food, music, and Italian culture, which I thought was very cool.  Eugene Ruffolo also has a great sense of humor as evidenced by how he handled my ridiculous opening of my live show. En route to the studio, I reached in blindly to my purse while driving and accidentally sprayed ‘Band Aid Antiseptic Cleansing to Go Spray' in my mouth instead of the ‘Listerine Cool Mint' which comes in the exact same pump packaging. Needless to say I was an idiot.  Panicking that I might have poisoned myself but knowing that Eugene was coming into the radio studio, I decided to risk not going to the emergency room and instead spent a few hyper minutes on the phone minutes before the show started with the nurse from Band Aids 800 # who sweetly read off the chemical ingredients I sprayed on my tongue and suggested I contact poison control. Had no time for that. Instead I played a few of Eugene's songs to calm myself down LOL and give my audience a taste of his extraordinary talent including new songs he's just released. In order we sampled: Late Bloomer (My personal favorite as the words were just so good!) Bella Maria   Closer To You   Poor Lonesome Me     Like many who were just about to launch 'something' right when the pandemic hit, Eugene's best laid plans got put on hold. “Embarrassed to say it was actually because that little pandemic that pesky little pandemic got in the way because I finished the record in 2019 and I was just about to go on a tour to Europe, literally in April 1st of 2020, and then you know what happened there. So yeah, and I was about to release the record and then that happened and then I sort of just sat down." "It felt like a strange time to do it and I couldn't figure out what the right time was and all this time went by and then I thought, well, I need to get this, I need to get this record out. I have more music to make.” As far as Eugene Ruffalo's Italian songs go…his are quite beautiful. His Italian album is called ‘Canto per Mangiare'.  “I've always embraced my Italian heritage, and I always had a sort of love of Italian music, because I started going to Italy when I was a child, and I went a lot during my twenties. I spent a lot of time there during my 20s. I had all these friends, and I didn't speak any Italian when I first started going. One of the ways that I learned how to speak Italian was through the music. I listened to a lot of music, and I would ask my friends, what does this mean and what does that mean.” Eugene wanted to get to the roots of real Italian music not the stereotypical Italian songs. “That's one of the impetuses behind this record was the fact that I think in America, people only know Italian music in two ways. They know it as classical, right? Let's just use Pavarotti. Bocelli is more of a pop guy, but he has sort of a classical, he has a classical aesthetic right? Or the Italian American Dean Martin singing Volare and that kind of thing. So, I wanted to get to more because there are a lot of other aspects of Italian music. So, my record really has a few elements to it. One of them is traditional Neapolitan folk music, which is really beautiful. And then the other is just singer-songwriters from the 70s, like the equivalents of the James Taylor, Cat Stevens that we have here, but that existed in the 70s in Italy. So, I covered some of their songs, and then I wrote a bunch of tunes myself.” Eugene's about to take his first trip in 4 years to perform. He's going overseas to Ireland. He's never been there. Then on to the Netherlands. But I told him he had to come do my show first because I needed to know more about him and wanted more people to hear him so they wouldn't have to say… How come I don't know you? You'll thank me for introducing you to Eugene Ruffolo on this podcast of our live conversation on The Debbie Nigro Show.

What the Riff?!?

Their eighteenth studio album found The Kinks moving in a different direction than many previous albums.  Low Budget would address many contemporary issues in song, rather than the subtle pieces and nostalgia found on earlier albums.  The Kinks also recorded much of the album in New York rather than London.  The result charted well in the United States, reaching number 11 on the Billboard 200.  It did not do well in their native Britain. The band members of The Kinks for this album were Ray Davies on guitar, keyboards, and vocals, Dave Davies on guitar and background vocals, Jim Rodford on bass and background vocals, and Mick Avory on drums.  They are joined in the studio by Nick Newall on saxophone and Gordon Edwards (briefly a member of the group) playing piano on the title track.  Ray Davies wrote all the tracks on this album. The album was more heavily produced than other albums and took a harder edge, which was appropriate for their arena rock phase for the group.  There were a lot of diverse songs as well, led by the disco-infused lead single, "(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman."   Catch Me Now I'm FallingThe second track from the album uses Captain America as a surrogate for the United States, and criticizes the U.S. as a country fallen on hard times, and its allies as not coming the the need of America despite earlier times when the allies were help by America during and after World War II.  The song was released as a single, but only in the U.S.PressureA high speed deeper cut, this song looks at pressure as a contagious disease, one that can be spread from one person to another, but which also can take over when you're alone.  This song has a decidedly punk flavor.  The call and response sound in the vocals gives it a more manic feel as well.(Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman The lead and biggest single from the album reached number 41 on U.S. charts.  Ray Davies was inspired to write the lyrics by the release of "Superman:  The Movie" in the previous year.  The disco feel was difficult for the band to achieve.  The song itself tells of a desire to take on modern problems like Superman, though the protagonist is nothing like the invincible super hero.Low BudgetThe title track leads off the second side of the album.  It describes a man learning to live much more frugally due to hard economic times.  The song was in line with the recessionary malaise of the times, though people could identify with it when living through any recession. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Main Theme to the motion picture The Amityville HorrorThis popular horror show convinced us all to stay away from houses that say, "Get Out!" STAFF PICKS:You Can't Change That by RaydioBruce leads off the staff picks with an American R&B and Funk band. Raydio is Arnell Carmichael and Darren Carmichael on vocals, Charles Fearing on guitars, Larry Tolbert on percussion, and Ray Parker, Jr. on vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards, and primary songwriter.  This song went to number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and features Arnell Carmichael on high vocals and Ray Parker, Jr. on low vocals.Goodbye (Astrid, Goodbye)  by Cold ChiselRob's staff pick may not be well known in the U.S., but is a hit from Australia.  In fact, Cold Chisel has been listed as the number 3 favorite Australian band as rated by Australian musicians, behind AC/DC and INXS, but ahead of Midnight Oil and Crowded House.  This rocking song with a boogie beat is about a guy who is hitting the road, and was designed as a set finisher.I Don't Like Mondays by the Boomtown RatsWayne brings us a cult hit that was inspired by a school shooting in California.  The piano-driven piece didn't chart in the U.S. but has had staying power over time.  Front man Bob Geldof heard the original story of the shooting while doing an interview at WRAS radio out of Georgia State.  Geldof regretted doing the song because it made the shooter famous.Heart of the Night by PocoBrian  wraps up the staff picks on a mellow note.  This is from the album "The Legend."   Writer Paul Cotton said this song was inspired by his "love and lust for New Orleans,"  and that the song practically wrote itself.  Phil Kinsey, who performed on saxophone on Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat" is featured on alto sax on this song.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Morning Dance by Spyro GyraThis jazz fusion piece was on the charts in the summer of 1979 and closes out of podcast this week.
