église AB Lausanne ; KJV Hebrews 11 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. ...

When we're busy with [waves hands around] life, we can miss out on things that are essential for us to see. Or not see, as the case may be.Who we are is reflected in how we show up (or don't) and what we choose to say (or not). Those things that aren't seen can send some of the most powerful messages. And we can learn a lot about other people by paying attention to those details.Links* The Gift* Looking Through Another's Eyes * The Emptiness of Indifference* The American Spirit: Who We Are and What We Stand For by David McCullough* The Ampersand GuildWe're currently booking sponsors for 2024. Curator Alice Wilke transports from Switzerland to sub-Saharan cities in Africa, tracing Carnival traditions across continents, via Carrie Mae Weems' 20th century wallpapers, ceramic plates, and photographs. In 1993, the North American artist Carrie Mae Weems undertook a ‘pilgrimage' to West Africa to discover her heritage. With photographs of historic architectures, former slave sites, and colonies, she seeks to retell histories about the origins of civilisation - but ones which also highlight her position as a contemporary artist practicing from a diaspora. As The Evidence of Things Not Seen - the final stop on Weems' current ‘world tour' of exhibitions - opens in Switzerland, curator Alice Wilke talks about how the show has changed from between the Barbican, in London, and Basel. Starting with the Missing Link series (2003), we consider the particular history of Carnival in Basel, a time of social and political critique, and tradition with unexpected connections to the Caribbean. We see how Weems relocates celebrated - and celebrity - Black women like Mary J. Blige in her practice, composing photographs like Baroque paintings to play on conventions of Western/European art, and keep stories alive through their retelling. Moving through Weems' wider work, we consider the racism, internalised shadism, and hyper-visibility of Black people in society, and what European institutions haven't yet seen, in their under-representation of POC artists. Carrie Mae Weems. The Evidence of Things Not Seen runs at the Kunstmuseum Basel in Switzerland until 7 April 2024. For more, you can read my article. Psalm 107:1-9. 1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. 2  Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story— those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, 3  those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south. 4  Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle. 5  They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away. 6  Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. 7  He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle. 8  Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, 9  for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.

Ruth taught herself to paint in oils while also studying for a BA in Music, and on graduating began painting full-time.   Since then, Ruth's paintings have gathered praise across the globe. Recent awards include a Purchase Award from the Art Renewal Center (2021) and 1st Place Young Artist award with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (2020). In 2022 Ruth was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.     “My work is almost always figurative; it is humanity, facial expression, and body language which spark my imagination. I want to communicate, and I always strive for a strong narrative element in my paintings. Inspirations include the work of pre-Raphaelite and naturalist painters, and post-impressionist painters (Waterhouse, Bastien-LePage, Friant, Bramley). I am passionate about painting from life – I'm drawn to the organic experience of capturing my immediate reality in paint. This passion is balanced by a keen curiosity regarding texture, layers, and edges. I constantly seek the most imaginative ways to make paint replicate the feel and character of what I see. Quick, immersive live studies are generally followed by extensive studio work.”     Ruth has exhibited at Sotheby's NYC, Arcadia Contemporary NYC, MEAM Barcelona, the Mall Galleries London, and is represented by Fine Art Commissions, London.   Ruth's painting “Things Not Seen” has been selected by the Art Renewal Center for the Lunar Codex cultural time-capsule project; in 2022 a copy of the painting will be sent to the Moon.

Greetings to all from my former home of Manhattan! Upon landing here a week ago, I was greeted by the news of the death of Ned Rorem, the man previously known as “America's Greatest Living Composer,” who just last month had celebrated his 99th birthday. Though he won the Pulitzer Prize in Music in 1976 for his orchestral work Air Music, Rorem was most celebrated for his vocal music, in particular his art songs. In this episode, I will delve into that aspect of his output, from his earliest published work to his extraordinary late masterpiece Evidence of Things Not Seen. The episode features singers who collaborated closely with the composer, including Phyllis Curtin, Donald Gramm, Beverly Wolff, Regina Sarfaty, Phyllis Bryn-Julson, Kurt Ollmann, and others. Many other singers were also drawn to Rorem's songs, including Leontyne Price, Jan DeGaetani, Martina Arroyo, and Laura Aikin, all of whom are represented here. As celebrated as a frank and forthright diarist and essayist as he was as a composer, Rorem (like his British counterpart Benjamin Britten) had extraordinary taste in the poetry and texts he chose to set. In this episode alone, we hear compositions set to words of Sylvia Plath, Paul Goodman, Walt Whitman, Paul Monette, Theodore Roethke, Frank O'Hara, and others. The episode concludes with a tribute to another musician who died earlier the same day, the American collaborative pianist David Triestram, who accompanies his dear colleague and friend Roberta Alexander in Leonard Bernstein's poignant and timely song “Some Other Time.” Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing.
