Passage: 13 And Moses said to the people, “Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.” 21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. 30 Thus the Lord saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. 31 Israel saw the great power that the Lord used against the Egyptians, so the people feared the Lord, and they believed in the Lord and in his servant Moses. (Exodus 14:13-14, 21-22, 30-31 ESV) Song: Red Sea Road by Christa Wells, Ellie Holcomb, and Nicole Witt Lyrics: We've buried dreams Laid them deep into the earth behind us Said our goodbyes At the grave but everything reminds us God knows we ache when He asks us to go on How do we go on We will (So we'll) (And we'll) sing to our souls We won't bury our hope Where He leads us to go there's a red sea road When we can't see the way He will part the waves And we'll never walk alone down a red sea road How can we trust When you say you will deliver us From all of this pain That threatens to take over us well Well this desert's dry but the ocean may consume And we're scared to follow you Oh help us believe You are faithful you're faithful When our hearts are breaking You are faithful you're faithful Oh grant us eyes to see You are faithful you're faithful Teach us to sing You are faithful you're faithful You're faithful No we'll never walk alone down a red sea road No we'll never walk alone down a red sea road Prayer: This is another day, O Lord. I know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently. And if I am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly. Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit of Jesus. Amen. -The Book of Common Prayer

Reinvention is one of the hallmarks of a long-term career as an artist. The ability and the desire, the capacity to take something that used to work a certain way during a certain season and do something new, something different with that same material with that same pattern with those same skills. One of the things I've admired about Christa Wells, in her career is her ability and her capacity to not just reinvent as a writer, a songwriter, a podcaster as a guide, but to do so in a way that paves the way and sets an example for other artists to do the same. I really enjoyed my conversation with her sitting down in Nashville. I think you will too.Check it out.

Opening Song:  Red Sea Road by Christa Wells, Ellie Holcomb, and Nicole Witt Lyrics: We've buried dreams Laid them deep into the earth behind us Said our goodbyes At the grave but everything reminds us God knows we ache when He asks us to go on How do we go on   We will sing to our souls We won't bury our hope Where He leads us to go there's a red sea road When we can't see the way He will part the waves And we'll never walk alone down a red sea road   How can we trust When you say you will deliver us From all of this pain That threatens to take over us well Well this desert's dry but the ocean may consume And we're scared to follow you   Oh help us believe You are faithful you're faithful When our hearts are breaking You are faithful you're faithful Oh grant us eyes to see You are faithful you're faithful Teach us to sing You are faithful you're faithful You're faithful   No we'll never walk alone down a red sea road No we'll never walk alone down a red sea road Passage:  4 On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters. 5 But to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the LORD had closed her womb. 6 And her rival used to provoke her grievously to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb. 7 So it went on year by year. As often as she went up to the house of the LORD, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. 8 And Elkanah, her husband, said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? And why do you not eat? And why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons?” 9 After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah rose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the LORD. 10 She was deeply distressed and prayed to the LORD and wept bitterly. 11 And she vowed a vow and said, “O LORD of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head.” 12 As she continued praying before the LORD, Eli observed her mouth. 13 Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli took her to be a drunken woman. 14 And Eli said to her, “How long will you go on being drunk? Put your wine away from you.” 15 But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the LORD. 16 Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.” 17 Then Eli answered, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition that you have made to him.” 18 And she said, “Let your servant find favor in your eyes.” Then the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad. 19 They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the LORD; then they went back to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her. 20 And in due time Hannah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Samuel, for she said, “I have asked for him from the LORD.” (1 Samuel 1:4–20 ESV) Musical Reflection: Bless the Lord, My Soul by Jacques Berthier Reflection Notes:  A contribution to the Taizé tradition, this tune by Berthier provides a reverent foundation for the text: “Bless the Lord, my soul, and bless God's holy name. Bless the Lord, my soul, who leads me into life.”  Prayer: This is another day, O Lord. Amen.

Through countless slings and arrows, and her own mainstream pop superstardom, Amy Grant has remained the defining face and voice of contemporary Christian music for over forty years. She was the first CCM artist to have a platinum record, (followed by five more platinum albums, three multi-platinum albums, and four gold albums.) She was also the first CCM artist to have a #1 pop single and has placed 17 hits on the Top 40 Adult Contemporary chart. She has earned 6 Grammy Awards and numerous Dove and other statues. With sales in excess of 30 million units, Amy Grant is the best-selling contemporary Christian singer of all time. But beyond all that, she crafted and delivered songs that spoke honestly, and vulnerably, to a generation. Amy Grant is currently marking the 30th anniversary of her breakthrough Heart In Motion album as well as a brand new collaborative worship album, Faithful that finds her working alongside a slew of talented young women, including True Tunes Podcast alums Taylor Leonhardt, Christa Wells, and Sandra McCracken. She graced the cover of the original True Tunes News in 1993 and is back with us for this very special episode of the True Tunes Podcast.   As the Christian subculture seems to have become defined by that to which it is opposed, its political meanderings, and any number of culture wars and distractions, Grant’s legacy as a person of warmth, generosity, grace, and hospitality only continues to grow. What might young artists, songwriters, and listeners have to learn from someone with such an unlikely story?   And on a special extended edition of the True Tunes Jukebox, we welcome two guest commentators to reflect on many of Grant’s most significant songs from very different perspectives. Industry veteran and radio expert Chris Hauser and singer-songwriter (and childhood Amy fan) Michelle Lynn Thompson join host John J. Thompson for a comprehensive dive into the deep cuts and musical watermarks of Grant’s amazing career. It’s our longest, fullest, episode yet. She shares her story with us, beginning with her polio diagnosis  Born in India to Christian parents Diagnosed with polio Moved to England and received 1st surgery at age 2 Moved to Canada Spent the majority her time living in the Shriner’s hospital 8:43 Vaneetha shares about her suffering theology after experiencing polio.  Then, she continues to share about multiple miscarriages and the loss of her 2 month old son, Paul. “I remember hanging up the phone and begging God. Just begging Him.  I will do anything if You would save my son.” “That day and I would say for a week after, through the funeral, God just carried me.  I had this sense that God was there even though I felt so devastated.  There was the supernatural sense that God was with me.” EP.36: Treva Kuyper | Hope and Healing After Unexpected Loss 14:09 Vaneetha shares how her relationship with Jesus changed in the months and years after the loss of Paul “I remember being in the car and saying, ‘Okay God, I can’t pull away from You. Show me Your listening. Draw near to me.’ I put myself out there in a way I had been afraid to.  I felt in some ways, how can I trust You God when I begged You to do something and You didn’t? I felt that I really opened my heart up to God when I asked that question….The next few moments, honestly Amber, were the most amazing moments of my life, even today.  The sense of God filled my car…There was this joy and it wasn’t in anything but God.” “It was the marker in my life that no matter what, God said, ‘I will give you this joy that you can’t explain, but it is rooted in Me and no one can take this from you’.” Markers or Joshua Stones: Joshua 4 17:38 Years later Vaneetha was diagnosed with post-polio syndrome and  her husband had an affair and left her to care for their 2 daughters alone. Vaneetha answers this question: As one blow after another came, did you cling to God, did you question him, did you shake your fists at Him, all of the above? “I had to pare down life to the bare minimum.” “I believe God is sovereign, so God could have stopped that. I felt so much like, ‘Why? Why are you doing this?’ It was the most personal of everything that had happened [her husband’s affair].” “I was crumbling. I remember yelling at God, crying to God, begging God, all of those things. I remember one night…saying, ‘God, help me. What are You doing? I can’t do this.’ I read John 11, the raising of Lazarus and reading the words if you believe you will see the glory of God.  I remember crying out to God, ‘I believe, help my unbelief. I want to see Your glory.’ It was another time God said, ‘I am going to hold you.  You can not see what I am doing right now.  You just can’t see it, but I am doing something that you need to trust’. Christa Wells, a friend of Vaneetha’s wrote a song about Paul titled Held, which ended up being sung by Natalie Grant. ” ‘Two months is too little, but they let him go. They had no sudden healing’….I see how God used that in that crushing time in my life.  The words of that song, ‘This is what it means to be HELD, how it feels when the sacred is torn from your life and you survive. This is what it is to be loved and to know that the promise was when everything fell you’d be HELD.’ That is the story of my life. The sacred has been torn from my life  over and over and over and yet God has HELD me. Remembering that song, remembering what God did through that song and through my life really gave me the courage to say, Okay, I am going to put a stake in the ground and trust You in the midst of this and trust that You love me even though I don’t feel loved.” 25:49 Vaneetha talks to the person who may be struggling with the belief that a good God wouldn’t allow all of this to happen.  SHOW NOTES continued Follow Vaneetha on IG, FB and Dance In The Rain -------------------------------------------  Follow Grace Enough Podcast on IG and FB ---------------------------------------------------------

One Day at a TimeI stumbled across a song by Christa Wells called “One Day” while I was traveling to an oncology appointment at Stanford where I was to find out whether or not I qualified for a clinical trial. I was feeling pretty anxious not knowing exactly what my future held.As I listened to this song for the 50th time, (I kid you not; I listened to this song on repeat the whole 3 hours there and 3 hours back home), my heart kept being drawn back to taking things one day at a time. You see, I am not a “one day at a time” person. I am very future-oriented. I want to know what exactly is going to happen, how it will happen, how long will it take to happen and what do I need to do to make it happen. God KnowsGod is so gracious to me and ever so patient. When I work myself up with the what-if’s and maybes, He pulls me back down to earth and tells me Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV):For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”God knows what my future holds so I can rest in him. I know this with every fiber of my being. So, when I am feeling lost and anxious about what my future holds, I can read onto Jeremiah 29:12-13 (NIV): Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.God promises that if we bring our fears and concerns about what troubles us to him, He will listen to us. Isn’t that beautiful? That the God of the entire universe and the maker of all things bends his ear to earth just so that he can have fellowship with us.So when life has you feeling overwhelmed and anxiety starts to settle in, take a deep breath and remember:One day at a time.

Sunday Morning Handouts This week at Lakeland we celebrated our 20/20 Impact Drive by having a concert Saturday evening with former Lakeland musicians and pastors in their own right; Tim Suttle of Redemption Church in Olathe, and Rustin Smith of Vox Dei Community in Raymore.  Headlining the event was Nashville recording artist and 2014 GMA Dove Award winner for New Artist of the Year Ellie Holcomb and her backing band members Christa Wells and Julie Melucci.  Christa just released her own solo album called Velveteen on April 10, 2018, and Julie is member of the band Trala.  The trio then honored us Sunday morning by contributing their talents to our Sunday morning worship services.  A video testimony was played which featured; Matt Turnbough talking about Eastland House, Dan Wilburn and his passion the underground persecuted church in China, Katie Schultz and her experiences with a redemptive group in Anapra, Mexico, and ending with Audrey George expressing her thankfulness for the impact that the Lakeland youth program campfire has had on her family. Dan and Marta shared with us to the “Welcome a Stranger” mission and discussed Lakeland’s experience with refugees in our own community.  Dan preached about the “cost” of being a Christian.

So much great stuff in this episode. I first heard about Christa because of he latest album which covers songs from Nirvana, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, Smashing Pumpkins and U2. All favorite bands from over the last 20 years of my life. I'd been listening to the album on repeat when I decided to reach out to her and see if she'd be interested in coming on the show. I'm so glad she said yes. Like my conversation with Donald Miller, we talked about the art itself, but so much more than just that. Christa is a deep thinker and I loved talking with her about art and artifice, business, the idea of the "tortured artist", and many so much more. Every artist in an entrepreneur and I loved getting Christa's take on these topics. As always, I had a great time talking to Christa. Enjoy the show! Howdy, folks. We have a little surprise for you this episode (#14). Earlier this week, our guest’s first full length album, As Sure as the Sun, was released and quickly scaled the iTunes charts – ultimately reaching #1 on Christian & Gospel charts and #8 on the overall albums charts. To reach that level as a Christian artist is remarkable, but to do so as an independent artist for one’s first major release is unheard of. So Tuesday afternoon, the very generous Ellie Holcomb took time out of release day craziness to talk to Joe…ellie_hi_fiveEllie demonstrates her humor, humility, and vulnerability in this candid conversation. Of course they talk about the record-setting Kickstarter campaign and the unexpected success of the album, but Ellie also shares her experience as a 8th-grade English teacher, her passion for sharing Christ with youth, how life’s valleys influence her songwriting, and (gasp!) the possibility of a sophomore album. We’re confident you’ll enjoy the interview, so get to it…Other NotesAs of this morning (Friday), Ellie’s album is still in the top ten of iTune’s overall album chart. Many thanks to Ellie’s manager, Sam Higinbotham, who coordinated the interview. Joe was apparently unable to pronounce her name when the episode was recorded. Sad…Ellie’s dad is legendary producer and songwriter, Brown Bannister. In a multi-decade career, Brown has one 25 Dove awards, 14 Grammy awards, and produced or engineered songs for just about every major Christian artist in CCM over the past 30 years.Ellie names some of the artists that are currently inspiring her.
