In January, 95% of the code Sean Barry's team wrote was written by hand. Six months later, that number is 2%. Sean isn't predicting what AI will do to your industry — he's living it, building it, and losing sleep over it.In this conversation with Dwayne Kerrigan, Sean Barry - the Chief Product Officer of LeanScaper - shares what the AI transformation actually looks like from the inside: the grief, the identity crisis, the compounding flywheel effect, and the window that's closing faster than most people realize. In this episode:Why most small to mid-sized businesses can't implement AI on their own — and what LeanScaper is doing about it for the landscape industryThe compounding flywheel effect: why companies that embrace AI now may be uncatchable by competitors who wait six monthsThe emotional journey Sean's team went through when AI fundamentally changed their jobs overnight — and what's on the other sideWhy the most powerful AI asset in your business might already be sitting in a drawer somewhereThe one thing Sean tells every business owner who doesn't know where to startWhy the resistance to AI — in boardrooms, on campuses, and inside teams — all traces back to the same root causeStart building your identity with Dwayne's Identity Framework created for the LeanScaper Conference: https://www.dwaynekerrigan.com/identity-framework/Episode Highlights:00:00 - AI Pace Shift00:27 - Podcast Intro00:59 - Meet Sean Barry03:33 - LeanScaper Explained04:33 - DIY AI Struggle08:28 - Jobs Fear vs Abundance14:46- Human Connection Premium17:08 - Mindset, Education, and Retraining25:57 - How to Start Using AI30:36 - SOPs as Superpower36:00 - Uncatchable Flywheel43:43 - Grief and Identity Shift53:26 - What Changed Since January58:14 - New Team Workflow Rebuilt01:00:51 - Wrap Up and Stay Tuned for Next EpisodeResources mentioned:LeanScaper — AI operating system for the landscape industryLMN (Landscape Management Network) — landscape industry business management softwareMark Bradley — Chairman and founder of LeanScaperLana — LeanScaper's AI agentChatGPT — referenced as starting point for AI adoptionClaude / Anthropic — cited as the inflection point in AI coding capability that changed everything in late 2024Claude Code — referenced as coding toolCodex — referenced as AI coding resourceGitHub Copilot / Microsoft Copilot — referenced in context of AI coding historyFigma — referenced as design tool being replaced by AI-assisted codingOpenClaw agents — referenced by Dwayne as agents running in his own setupQuotes:“ Your choice is not whether or not this happens, your choice is whether it happens with you or to you, and that's the choice you get to make.” - Sean Barry“ In January, ninety-five, ninety-eight percent of the code we would write was written by hand, and today, two percent. Yeah, that's six months.” - Sean Barry“ Take next week off and stop doing your day job, and then spend forty hours learning AI and diving into ChatGPT, Codex, Claude. Figure out what you want. Dive in, there's tons of education. You just ask AI how to use it. Then the next week, that time will pay back. You will have moved yourself so far in that forty hours that you will get that time back the next week.” - Sean Barry"You'll be uncatchable by people who don't." - Sean Barry“ I think 95% of small to mid-sized businesses don't have the time nor resources to go accomplish that. So I think we're at the exciting point in what we're trying to do is, is take all that power and then do all the heavy lifting for landscape contractors so they can just turn it on and use it and not need to go figure out how to put it all together.” - Sean BarryAbout Sean Barry:Sean Barry is the Chief Product Officer at LeanScaper, an AI operating system and business community built specifically for the landscape and snow contracting industry. He brings nearly two decades of product and digital leadership experience, including almost four years at LMN (Landscape Management Network) — the landscape industry's leading business management platform — where he rose from SVP of Product to Chief Product Officer. Before entering the green industry, Sean spent 14 years at Laughlin Constable, a Milwaukee-based agency, where he built his career from Lead Engineer to SVP of Digital, Account and Innovation. Harish, former lead engineer at MongoDB and current co-founder of Flaire, takes us on a journey through his unusual career path—one that didn't involve grinding LeetCode or chasing FAANG.Instead, he got deep into cybersecurity, built large-scale systems, and eventually started his own company that's redefining how small businesses use software. We talk about:What it's actually like to work on database internals and secure infrastructureWhy most engineers shouldn't become founders—and why he did anywayHow to use AI for real business workflows (not just ChatGPT hacks)The rise of “cybersecurity as product” and how ops teams still run on spreadsheets and WhatsAppWhy learning to code isn't just about DSA and bootcamps—it's about solving real problems“A lot of tools are built for enterprises, but most businesses are duct-taping together spreadsheets. We built for them.”“You need to understand how your workflows actually function before throwing AI at them.”“Don't overbuild. This conversation explores the impact of lighting on human health. Kevin Houser, Professor at Oregon State University and Lead Engineer at the Pacifica Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), discusses how circadian lighting and human-centric design influence well-being, the latest research on non-visual responses to light, and the industry's challenge in balancing scientific rigor with practical application. The conversation also addresses the risks of over-quantifying lighting metrics too soon and the need for continued research and adaptation. Two big takeaways: Human-centric lighting is more than a marketing term – It has real implications for well-being, but the industry must be careful not to over-promise or oversimplify its effects. We're still in the early stages of understanding circadian lighting – While there are provisional recommendations for lighting design, ongoing research and practical application will determine how effective these strategies really are. The Key topics are: The evolution of human-centric lighting and its ties to circadian rhythms The science behind non-visual responses to light and their effect on human health The role of the intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cell (ipRGC) in regulating circadian rhythms The challenge of applying lab-based research findings to real-world architectural lighting The fine line between scientific accuracy and marketing buzzwords in the lighting industry The future of human-centric lighting, including emerging standards and recommendations The need for continued refinement of provisional lighting guidelines This episode is brought to you by Nightingale Lighting, a brand that designs lighting solutions beyond expectations in healthcare environments. Retired NASA Astronaut Lieutenant General Susan Helms reflects on her 211 days in space and life onboard a young International Space Station. In this episode, Susan takes us through her groundbreaking journey as the first active-duty woman officer to become a NASA astronaut. She discusses attending the United States Air Force Academy, flight testing fighter jets, her five space missions, and a record-breaking spacewalk. This one is going to be cool!Key Takeaways:Susan's childhood dream was to attend the United States Air Force Academy. At the time, women were not permitted to learn at the USAFA, but in 1975 during her senior year of high school, President Ford signed a law allowing women to enroll. She applied and was accepted to the Academy, joining 157 other women in the first class of 1976.After graduating from the USAFA in 1980, Susan was assigned to Eglin Air Force Base as an F-16 Weapons Separation Engineer and then became the Lead Engineer for F-15 weapons separation. She then transferred to Edwards Air Force Base to be a Flight Test Engineer. While flight testing CF-18s in Canada, Susan was selected to become a NASA astronaut. She flew on STS-54, 64, 78, 101, and Expedition 2.Susan and crewmate Jim Voss trained and studied languages in Moscow with fellow Cosmonaut Yuri Usachov before their Expedition 2 flight. On a few of her missions, Susan operated the Remote Manipulator System on the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station. This robot arm is used to deploy satellites, capture objects, and assist astronauts during spacewalks. In 2001, Susan Helms and Jim Voss set a world record after spacewalking for 8 hours and 56 minutes. This record was held for 23 years before Chinese astronauts Cai Xuzhe and Song Lingdong broke it in 2024 by 10 minutes.Susan encourages listeners to do what they love and not to follow careers that others are pushing them towards.Resources:Susan Helms' Website Susan Helms' NASA Bio Susan Helms' Air Force Bio One of first female Air Force Academy graduates, Susan Helms, becomes first female military astronaut in space (Denver 7) Expedition 2 (NASA)(00:00) - Intro (01:00) - The First Space Tourist & Astronaut Roles (02:55) - Early Interest in Aviation (03:34) - USAFA Application (04:52) - The USAFA's First Class of Women (05:54) - Attending the USAFA (08:01) - F-15 & F-16 Weapons Testing (09:52) - The Flight Test Engineer Role (11:14) - Flight Testing in Canada (13:00) - Astronaut Selection & First Mission (14:45) - Flying at Mach 25 (15:32) - The Remote Manipulator System (RMS) (18:19) - Astronaut Training in Moscow (21:04) - A Record-Breaking Spacewalk (24:54) - Eating & Drinking During Spacewalks (26:17) - Living in Space (28:35) - Post Astronaut Career (30:22) - Space Exploration's Future (32:02) - Life Advice (32:45) - Outro

We're delighted to welcome a special guest to The Race IndyCar Podcast this week, as Indianapolis 500-winning engineer Angela Ashmore of Chip Ganassi Racing joins the show. From watching short-track racing as a child to engineering in NASCAR, Ashmore has a diverse resume that most recently led her to winning the 500 with Marcus Ericsson as his assistant engineer, before being promoted to lead engineer for Marcus Armstrong at the team in 2024.Ashmore discusses how well the job of assistant prepares you for the lead engineering role, and looks at some of the key areas where there's big gains to be made as an engineer. She also explains what she expects from IndyCar Rookie of the Year Marcus Armstrong and the team this year.Ashmore also speaks passionately about becoming (according to the series) only the fourth female lead engineer in IndyCar history, including being a visible role model for women wanting to get into motorsport, and what the IndyCar paddock is like to work in.Don't forget, if you have a question for our hosting team, you can email text and/or voice notes to be included on the podcast by sending them to podcasts@the-race.comFEBRUARY IS FREE! Saron chats with Ronesha Dennis, Founder and Lead Engineer at Bergeron-Woodley. Ronesha talks about growing up and how tech played a role in her childhood (her first website was a fan site for Lil Bow Wow). She talks about how she ended up in another career for 5 years until she sat down and thought about things she liked doing as a child without being paid for doing those things. This led her to want to get into tech. She decided to leave her job, move back with her parents, and do an 8-week program on Ruby on Rails. She then did a fellowship with Code for Progress. After graduating, she landed a job as a consultant then advanced to an Engineer, a Senior Engineer, and finally to managing other Engineers. She has authored coding books and she has her company building applications for nonprofits and other small businesses. Ronesha speaks on the mental health break she took after making the switch to tech and how important it is to give yourself space and time to take breaks after a career transition. In this episode, Dave and Jamison answer these questions: Morning! I will cut straight to the chase: I'm burned out and tired. At the same time, I'm aiming to get a promotion during the next cycle. My manager is aware of the latter, but not the former. Should I tell them? I suspect that I would get a lighter work load and less responsibilities, but it might also impact my chances at getting a promotion. The project I'm working is a “high stakes, tight deadlines” mess. I usually would just take a week or two of PTO, but the tight deadlines make it hard. Do I grin and bear it till promotion cycle (another 4-6 months) or just tell my manager and risk losing the rewards? I'm about to get promoted to L6, what my company calls Lead Engineer, but I have to move to another team for it to happen. The other team already has a few people who are applying for that same promotion, and they got skipped over for my promo. They've also been devs longer than me. (4 years for me) So, I'm worried about tension on that team when I join. On top of that, I'll be learning this role too! How can I make room for myself to have failures and make poor decisions, while also not undermining my expertise? How can I step into this lead role while not stepping on the toes of the engineers already on the team? Any tips for someone leading a team for the first time, while also joining that team?
