The murders of 18-year-old Haile Kifer and her 17-year-old cousin Nicholas Brady occurred on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 2012, when the two teenagers broke into the home of 64-year-old Byron David Smith in Little Falls, Minnesota. Once inside the home, Smith shot the teens separately, 10 minutes apart, as they each walked down the stairs to the basement. The case sparked debate over the "Castle Doctrine", which allows homeowners to defend their homes with lethal force. Join The Investigators as they examine whether or not the Castle Doctrine was a viable defense for Byron Smith and how his career as a Security Engineer for the State Department might help explain his mental state leading up to this tragic and fateful day.

Leading up to Thanksgiving 2012, Byron David Smith claimed that his home had been broken into at least half a dozen times over the course of a few months, only one of which he reported to the police. On Thanksgiving Day, 2012, Byron was home, reading a book in his favorite reading chair when he heard glass break and decided to take matters into his own hands. The next moments were captured on an audio recorder, as Byron shot Haile Kifer and Nicholas Brady, two teens from his neighborhood. It would be up to a jury to decide, was it self defense or murder? But his one-man war on Greater Manchester Police will truly shock, brought to grim life in a cold-blooded ambush in a quiet Peak District village. This is a remastered re-release of a bonus episode from October of 2018 entitled The Tale of the Castle Doctrine. I was asked to take the episode down. It was one that was suggested to me by a listener. But someone closely related to the story took issue with the episode, so I pulled the version where I thanked the listener who recommended this to me and I am re-recording it renaming it the Tale of Brandon Ketsdever and the Castle Doctrine. I feel these cases are important lessons, especially for young people who might be getting into mischief or pranking. It is a cautionary tale and serves as a reminder that our kids and young people need to think about the things they do, make good choices, use better judgement, and that they are not immortal. Don West and Steve Moses join Shawn Vincent to take a fresh look at the Byron David Smith case, discussing themes of right and wrong versus legal and illegal and weighing the myths of “prairie justice” against the realities of the American criminal justice system.
In today's murder and true crime documentary, we're covering the case of Byron David Smith. Leading up to Thanksgiving of 2012, Vietnam veteran Byron David Smith was plagued by thieves who kept sneaking into his home and stealing his sentimental belongings, including his military medals, ribbons, and countless other items that were important to him. Eventually, Byron David Smith grew incredibly paranoid as more items began going missing inside his home. It wasn't long before he started to lose sleep, and one day when the thieves decided to hit his house once more, he snapped. This true crime case has been widely debated around the internet, as some argue that this was a senseless murder while others believe Bryon was simply acting in self defense. Regardless, Byron David Smith was convicted of premeditated murder and sits in prison to this day. Join us for a true crime storytime covering the case of Byron David Smith. In this freaky fast Friday episode, we discuss the details surrounding the double murder of Haile Kifer and Nicholas Brady by Minnesota homeowner Byron David Smith. Smith was apparently terrorized by previous burglaries and took the law into his own hands on Thanksgiving Day 2012 when he lured Kifer and Brady into his home, hid in his basement, shot them as they came downstairs and then executed them after they fell to the ground. This case was a big issue on whether or not the castle doctrine would protect Smith under "self defense". The jury said "no" after Smith's own home security system caught some incriminating audio and video. Thanks for listening! This week we talk about Sarah Foxwell, Oscar Pistorius, and Byron David Smith.
The day is Thanksgiving day, 2012 when 18 year old Haile Kifer, and her cousin, 17 year old, Nicholas Brady, broke into the home of 65 year old Byron David Smith, in Little Falls, Minnesota. Byron was armed and with a lightweight semi automatic rifle and shot the teens to death. This case caused several debates over the “castle doctrine”, this is the story of the killings of Byron David Smith.
Byron David Smith was in his basement on Thanksgiving Day, minding his own business when he heard a window break upstairs. Then he heard someone enter his home. Byron grabbed his gun and waited quietly as the intruder roamed the house. When the intruder came down the stairs, Byron fired his gun three times. The intruder, 17-year-old Nicholas Brady, died. Ten minutes later, another intruder entered Byron’s home. It was 18-year-old Haile Kifer. Byron killed her, too -- shooting her six times. On the surface, it seemed that Byron had acted within his legal rights. In Minnesota, a person may use deadly force to prevent a felony from taking place in their home or dwelling. But as investigators soon discovered, this case wasn’t clear cut, and Byron wasn’t as innocent as he seemed. Then Brandi tells us about a “normal, middle class family,” but we all know where this story is headed. Chris and Tina Lunney were living what appeared to be a pretty comfortable life in New Jersey. They had two children, and had asked Tina’s mother to come live with them. From the outside looking in, it seemed that everything was going well. But then one day, Tina called Chris in a panic. Her mother, Marie Zoppi, had died by suicide. She hadn’t seemed unhappy, but she’d taken her life. Or had she? And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “12 minutes on Elm street” episode of Dateline “Court to announce jury’s verdict in Byron Smith murder trial,” by Ashli Overlund for WJON News “MN Supreme Court upholds Byron Smith conviction,” by Allen Costantini for KARE 11 “Graphic audio released by courts of Byron Smith as he guns down two teens in his Minnesota basement,” Associated Press “Little Falls man found guilty on all four counts of murder,” Associated Press “Castle Doctrine,” entry on Wikipedia “Byron David Smith killings,” entry on Wikipedia “Byron David Smith,” entry on Murderpedia In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Tina Lunney” episode Snapped “State of New Jersey v. Tina Lunney”http://law.justia.com “Prosecutor: Fairfield woman killed mother, 81, staged it to look like a suicide” by Julia Terruso, The Star-Ledger “Husband reads letter to jurors where wife confesses to murdering her mother” by Julia Terruso, The Star-Ledger “Fairfield woman told police she strangled mother with necktie” by Julia Terruso, The Star-Ledger “Jury convicts Fairfield woman of strangling her mother” by Julia Terruso, The Star-Ledger

On Thanksgiving Day, 2012, Byron Smith shot and killed two teenagers who broke into his house. He was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam war and a retired US State Dept employee with a spotless record. But Smith was paranoid after his house had been burglarized a number of times. Because of this, he had an audio recorder that captured the shootings. Join Mike and Gibby as they discuss the killings of 18-year-old Hailee Kifer and 17-year-old Nicholas Brady at the hands of Byron Smith. This case became a lightening rod for the debate about where the line was between defending yourself and your property and murder. Smith's own audio recordings and his subsequent interviews with police became the centerpiece of the State's case against him.You can help support the show by going to patreon.com/truecrimeallthetimeVisit the show's website at truecrimeallthetime.com for contact, merchandise, and donation informationPlease help support our Sponsors:Simplisafe - Go to simplisafe.com/tcatt to get a special holiday offer on fantastic home securityBuffy - Get $20 off the best comforter you'll ever sleep with at buffy.co using our promo code tcatttBetter Help - Get 10% off your first month of online counseling at betterhelp.com/tcatt using our promo code tcatt

Mike Boudet joins hosts Stefanie Wilder-Taylor and Lynette Carolla to discuss the cases of Peter Keller and Byron David Smith.
A deliberate murder that took 8 years of planning and plenty of hard work to accomplish. It involved a man, his truck, and an underground bunker in the Washington mountains. Peter Keller was described as a survivalist with a distrust of authority by his family and friends, but none of them had any idea he would ever resort to what he did. Now they're left wondering how they could have missed the clues and whether there was anything they could have done to prevent the murder of his wife and daughter. We'll also cover the castle doctrine case of Byron David Smith, in which all of the condemning audio was recorded by the home owner’s own security system. Even if you strongly feel in the second amendment and the right for homeowners to protect themselves and their property, you'll find this particular case absolutely chilling. The pure evil in Smith's voice is nakedly obvious on tape, stirring memories of Norman Bates in Psycho.
