The last few weeks we've been listening to classic songwriters. Most of these toiled for many years in relative obscurity until their popularity grew, and their music became part of our zeitgeist. This week we begin a two-part feature focusing on singers and instrumentalists who are less well-known ... but with a bit of luck and hard work their music, too, might just achieve the status of classic folk. We'll hear from Michael McDermott, Christopher Elliot, VickiKristinaBarcelona, Cahalen Morrison & Country Hammer, Vivian Leve and many more. Looking for the classics of tomorrow … this week on The Sing Out! Radio Magazine. Quarantined in Seattle, Cahalan Morrison of Western Centuries is still pretty positive considering that their tour dates are canceled or rescheduled, and they have their new record Call The Captain releasing on April 3rd. With the state of the world, Western Centuries is still pushing forward with sharing their music and thoughts in songs like "Space Force," "Dynamite Kid," and "Long Dreadful Journey". Working from an egalitarian mindset and sharing the weight of creativity and business, Western Centuries was able to produce a record that feels established but with enough room to grow for future projects while making satirical, thought-provoking music. We take a look at what it's like taking a "left" stance on ideals while a genre is still conservative. Then the challenges where there can be an audience that has a lack of empathy for different views. http://www.westerncenturies.com @western_centuries
(from supplied release) HANCOCK, Mass.—Blend a country band with early R&B, throw in a hefty amount of vocal harmonies and witty one-liners, and rock out like The Band. That’s what you’ll get Thursday, July 13, when roots music maverick Western Centuries takes the 1910 hayloft stage at Hancock Shaker Village. With upbeat, bar room dance numbers, lilting, soulful tunes of heartbreak, and everything in between, the band is as tight they come. Comprised of Seattle-based country musician Cahalen Morrison, jam band veteran Jim Miller (co-founder of Donna the Buffalo), R&B and bluegrass-by-the-way-of-punk rock songwriter Ethan Lawton, pedal steel player Rusty Blake, and bassist Dan Lowinger, Western Centuries is clearly a diverse bunch.… The post Will Call Episode #57: Western Centuries appeared first on The Greylock Glass.
