A couple of weeks ago, I could not have predicted that I would come upon another way of crafting a Southern Songs and Stories podcast in this fashion. Regular or even casual listeners will be familiar with the go-to format of documentary style profiles of and interviews with music artists in this series; those of you who listen a lot will probably be familiar with some of the less traveled paths we have taken here as well, which include a remembrance for a friend and colleague who passed away unexpectedly, a survey of how western NC folks in the music business were coping in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Helene, as well as an old school, comedic Christmas radio drama, among others. Add to that list this episode, which is a live podcast, at least for part of it. And we are talking about a subject that is incredibly deep and wide, a subject which could easily fill a year's worth of episodes. It is a subject that I will revisit again in more depth in coming months — perhaps not here, but at least in person. More on that in the podcast itself, which I hope you enjoy hearing as much as I did in making it. Album art for the compilation Gastonia Gallop on Old Hat Records Here, we excerpt two parts of a presentation I gave at Queens University in Charlotte as part of their Senior Scholars series on January 17th, 2025. This episode adds to that original talk with additional commentary, music, and new avenues of exploration for the topic, which is essentially the impact from music born of social movements, especially as it relates to radio. At Queens, I gave an overview of 13 songs associated with four social movements: Labor, Civil Rights, Feminism and Environmentalism. Here, we focus on the portions of my talk on Labor and Civil Rights, with example songs ranging from hillbilly music from a 1930s cotton mill man (“Cotton Mill Colic”) to the most controversial and simultaneously most successful song in Billie Holiday's career (“Strange Fruit”), and more. TRINI LOPEZ (May 15, 1937 – August 11, 2020) ‘THE LOST INTERVIEWS' WITH RAY SHASHO EPISODE 12 Interviewed November 28th 2014 Trini Lopez is an international music legend best known for recording classic covers and converting them into danceable songs by adding his own special spin and flavor. Lopez not only makes those notable tunes danceable, but he usually outsells all other artists who have also covered those songs including the recordings by the original songwriters. Born in Dallas, Texas, his Father Trinidad Lopez II was a singer, dancer, actor, and musician in Mexico. Trini's parents moved to Dallas when his dad was eighteen seeking a better life. Trini learned to play guitar from his father and played for money on street corners. He eventually began performing in clubs around the affluent parts of Dallas. Lopez even performed at a club owned by the notorious Jack Ruby. A true rock and roll visionary … Lopez uncannily wrote and recorded a song called “The Right to Rock” released on a small label called Volk Records in 1958. After hearing the single, King Records offered Trini a three-year contract. The only chart hit for Lopez on the King Records label was a Skyliners cover called “Since I Don't Have You,” Trini's rendition reached #10 on the Cashbox and Billboard charts. After one of Trini's performances Lopez met with another Texan, rock and roll pioneer Buddy Holly. Holly tried to help Trini by inviting him to meet with his record producer in Clovis, New Mexico. Lopez became great friends with Buddy Holly and The Crickets. Holly was killed in a plane crash along with Richie Valens and The Big Bopper on February 3rd 1959. Several months after the crash, Lopez received a phone call to come out to Hollywood, California to become the new lead singer of The Crickets. The Crickets plans never materialized and Lopez took a job at the Ye Little Club in Beverly Hills. The one-year run led to a historic engagement at the famous PJ'S nightclub. It was at PJ'S where Lopez landed his big break. Frank Sinatra took notice of Trini's one-man act and had Don Costaoffer him an eight-year recording contract on Sinatra's label Reprise Records. Trini's first two albums were recorded live at PJ'S and successfully launched an incredible music and acting career for the impending international superstar. Trini's most recognizable Hit Singles … “If I Had a Hammer” (#3 Billboard U.S. Hit-1963 -Reached #1 in 36 countries), “I'm Coming Home Cindy” (#39 Billboard Hit-1966), “Michael, (#42 Billboard Hit-1964), “Lemon Tree” (#20 Billboard Hit-1965) “Kansas City” (#23 Billboard Hit-1963), “America,” “La Bamba”(1966) “Gonna Get Along With Out Ya' Now” (1967), and The Bramble Bush (1967) to name just a few. Rachel Withers, The Politics Columnist and Contributing Editor of The Monthly speaks about the latest developments on the Indigenous Voice to Parliament. Former Leader of the Australian Greens, environmentalist, and giant of the conservation movement Bob Brown speaks in-depth with host Amy Mullins. In a wide-ranging and deep conversation, Bob reflects on his life of activism, protest, and deep personal connection with nature including the giant native trees of Tasmania, as depicted in an inspiring documentary, THE GIANTS (in cinemas April 20, co-directed by Rachel Antony and Laurence Billiet). The film interweaves Bob's story with the life cycle of the ancient trees he is fighting for. In this conversation, Bob shares his wisdom to those who care for and want to protect the environment, and gives us his take on a range of environmental and conservation issues today. Bob heads up the Bob Brown Foundation. Hugh White, contributor to The Monthly, Emeritus Professor of Strategic Studies at ANU, and author of The China Choice, chats with Amy about his latest piece for The Monthly, ‘Penny Wong's next big fight'. Hugh looks at whether Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong can stop Australia going to war and examines how her foreign policy positions have evolved as shadow and foreign affairs minister. Does Penny Wong believe AUKUS now positions Australia for an inevitable Pacific war, or does she still think we needn't choose between the US and China? Note: The two songs Bob Brown mentions from the 1960s, as aired on the show – If I Had A Hammer by Peter, Paul, and Mary AND Little Boxes by Peter Seeger.

“Jazz: Now & Then” Noel Paul Stookey became a household name as the Paul part of the Peter Paul and Mary equation. The landmark folk trio formed in New York in the '60s and went on to lead the American folk music revival with massive hits like If I Had A Hammer, Puff The Magic Dragon, and Leaving On A Jet Plane. Hammer, of course was written by Pete Seeger and Jet Plane John Denver, but that was the thing about Peter Paul and Mary—they were incredible interpreters of American song. Their readings of Dylan tracks like Blowin' in the Wind, and the Times They Are A Changin' are further evidence that they could not only interpret but in many ways make those songs their own in the process. Peter Paul and Mary put out nearly twenty albums in their career, including 2003's In These Times and the band ceased to be when Mary Travers passed away in 2009. As for Stookey, he remains a pretty active guy both in and out of music. From founding the non-profit Music To Life with his daughter to producing artists like Dave Mallet and Gordon Bok to playing at Dartmouth in honor of Martin Luther King Day, Stookey is still out there, doing the work. And speaking of work, his new album has just hit shelves. Titled Fazz: Now & Then, the staggering 20-track collection mixes new compositions with folk, jazz, gospel, classical, and world music. It's been germinating in Stookey's head for almost 25 years and it was well worth the wait. Filled with folky precision, poetic finesse and clever wordplay, Fazz: Now & Then is a refreshing blast of musical fusion commandeered by one of the greatest songwriters in American Music. A singer, a father, a husband, an artist and and an activist, Stookey is the real deal. www.noelpaulstookey.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers: Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: Email: Editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

Juneteenth commemorates the day (June 19, 1865) when Union General Gordon Grainger announced General Order No.3 proclaiming freedom from slavery in Texas. Celebrations of the date happened at the time, but eventually took a back seat to the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. With the advent of Black Lives Matter, new emphasis has been placed on the holiday … and we’ll be celebrating this week as well. I love the shore. Especially in the Autumn. I've spent many vacation hours on Nantucket and in Stonington, Connecticut. After Columbus Day, the rates are lower, and most of the tee shirt shops and the fancy restaurants are closed for the season. You feel you have the town to yourself. For this week’s show, we'll hear some of my favorite music with a nautical theme. Included are songs from Stan Rogers, Louis Killen, The Boarding Party, Lankum, Finest Kind and many more. This week we conclude our two-part feature “It Don't Mean a Thing ...” with a focus on western swing. These were needed to fill these massive dance halls with music for dancing. We’ll hear classics from The Light Crust Doughboys, Milton Brown and his Musical Brownies and Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. On this week’s show we’re featuring songs about labor organizing. Recently the US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that labor union membership has risen to 12.4% of the working population. This figure is a slight increase over 12.1% in 2007, but significantly lower than the 20.1% in 1983. There are many reasons for this decrease including decline in popularity during financial crises and the general reaction to the collective bargaining concept. Vancouver singer-songwriter and actor Adrian Glynn has just released his third solo recording, "Ghostlight Sessions" and it's an album with a difference - it was recorded on an empty theatre stage in Kamloops BC at the start of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. An introspective, acoustic folk record, the songs on the new album move from a talkin' blues about suicidal depression, to a modern satirical take on "If I Had A Hammer", to an ode to slide-guitar guru Kelly Joe Phelps. Ghostlight Sessions is only available as a digital download from Bandcamp. A portion of the proceeds (25%) will go to the NAACP and BIPOC-Covid related organizations. For more information about Adrian Glynn, visit https;//adrianglynn.com. Music: Adrian Glynn "Acting My Age", "Hammer", "Kelly Joe, I Heard You Sold Your Last Guitar" and "Talkin’ Suicidal Depression Blues" from "Ghostlight Sessions" (2020, Self) CDN.

The evolution of modern folk music in one song. Start with a good song built around a big message and end up with some of the greatest American vocal talents ever. If I Had A Hammer, originally by The Weavers, covered by Peter, Paul and Mary, and by Sam Cooke. Outro music is Tennessee Waltz, also by Sam Cooke (which he manages to sing as a non-waltz but it still works.)
Beautiful voices, old white people, after-school TV reruns, and just how much difference the right room makes. Dream a Little Dream of Me, originally by Ozzie Nelson and his orchestra, covered by Doris Day, and by The Mamas and The Papas. Outro music is If I Had A Hammer by Peter, Paul, and Mary.
In the seventh episode of the ALL NEW Anhedonic Headphones podcast, Kevin welcomes his former co-worker Sara to the program; she previously worked at the co-op for roughly three years before departing at the beginning of 2018. As you'll discover once you begin listening, Sara came prepared, complete with seven songs to discuss, handwritten talking points for almost all of them, and even a passage from Braiding Sweetgrass to read. For more information about the AWARD WINNING music blog Anhedonic Headphones, click here! Episode 7 credits: The intro to the episode featured an instrumental version of "Labels," performed by GZA/Genius, taken from the 2012 Get On Down/Geffen/Universal Music Special Markets release Liquid Swords - The Chess Box (Instrumentals.) The song originally appears on the 1995 Geffen Records release Liquid Swords. The theme music is a YouTube rip of the intro to BET's "Rap City: The Bassment," airing from 1999 to 2005. In today's episode, we discussed: "If I Had A Hammer,"written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hayes; performed by Peter, Paul, and Mary, taken from the self-titled 1962 album released on Warner Brothers Records. "Deadwood, South Dakota," written by Eric Taylor, and performed by Nanci Griffith, taken from One Fair Summer Evening, released in 1988 by MCA. "Woodstock," by Joni Mitchell, taken from the album Ladies of The Canyon, released in 1970 by Reprise Records. "You'll Have to Swing it (Mr. Paganini)," written by Sam Coslow and performed by Ella Fitzgerald. The first recording dates back to 1936. "Didn't it Rain," performed by Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Originally a spiritual, an arrangement was written down in 1919 by Henry Thacker Burleigh. "Avant Gardener," performed by Courtney Barnett, taken from the album The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas, released in 2013 by Mom + Pop Music. "Winter's Come and Gone" by Gillian Welch, taken from the album Hell Among The Yearlings, released in 1998 by Acony. Please note the music played on the Anhedonic Headphones is used with the intent for discussion and promotional purposes only. Please do not sue me because someone wanted to talk about your song on the show. Thank you for understanding.

Ever wonder what happens to the furniture you carelessly left on the curb because you were too lazy to call a charity to collect it? (Sidenote: yeah, that’s a thing you can do.) If that garbage is LUCKY, it gets salvaged by today’s guest, REY NALDO, and ‘Reypurposed’ (@reypurposed) into dope, one-of-kind functional art pieces. In this episode of Jammerz, Megan is strapped onto Stephen, baby-bjorn style, and the trio hits the streets of NYC with Rey for a crash course in the underground world of Garbage Picking!! (Literally. That’s not a euphemism for Wendi’s dating habits.) Rey also gives great advice for people that want to try their hand at garbage-inspired DIY projects! (Still not a dating euphemism.) It’s their first outdoor mission, and the Jammerz have a lot to prove. Will they find their dream garbage? Does Megan (@handsomepartybutt) get her wish of being hit by a car? Can Wendi (@wendibird82)avoid wandering into a bar? Can I think of a suspenseful question involving Stephen (@thepenta) that ends with a word that rhymes with ‘bar’?!? Mike Jones joins That Old Pod to discuss technology as it relates to quality of life. Starting our discussion off as it relates to the book The Unsettling of America: Culture and Agriculture by Wendell Berry, we discuss how farming and industrialization have impacted our quality of life. You’ll notice that the pod ends abruptly on a cliff hanger. In a charming encapsulation of the failings of technology, about an hour of our conversation got cut off through a technical error on Lucio’s part. Fortunately, we have noted the course of the missing conversation, and we were getting tired and really had much more to say anyway, so we will be recording part II of this topic in the near future.
