Send us a textTo sign up for the November 16th virtual LYRIC WRITING WORKSHOP: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1070697919299?aff=oddtdtcreatorMy guest today is New England based singer/songwriter Jesse Terry. Before I introduce him I wanted to let you know that on Saturday Nov. 16th I am offering a virtual 3 hour songwriting workshop.  There are a few spaces left and you can sign up through the show notes or on my website at scarletvkeys.comThis workshop will be very process oriented focused on lyric writing. You will be doing a lot of small writing exercises to sharpen your lyric writing skills.  We will work on metaphor, avoiding cliche's and literary devices used by some of the best writers.Today we will talk about his writing process, crowd funding an album with your super fans and some of the reasons he writes such beautiful melodies.  He's going to play a few song off of his new record Arcadia, released Oct. 4. And this might just be his best record yet. It's rooted in rhythmic rock & roll and sharp songwriting, Arcadia marks a turning point in Jesse Terry's career. It's the seventh original album from an award-winning musician who's spent much of the past decade on the move, playing 150 shows annually, bouncing between solo performances and full-band gigs. Arcadia captures both sides of that musical personality, finding room for amplified anthems one moment and intimate moments the next, showcasing just how wide Terry's reach can be.  Arcadia is layered with dueling electric guitars, stacked vocal harmonies, and heartland hooks, all supplied by instrumentalists like Ethan Ballinger (Miranda Lambert, Lee Ann Womack), Ross McReynolds (Katie Pruitt, Becca Mancari), Sam Howard (Molly Tuttle, Joy Williams), Juan Solorzano (Ruston Kelly, Parker Millsap), and Danny Mitchell (Rodney Crowell, Anderson East). It's a big, bold sound — the sort of record that begs to be played in the car, windows rolled down, driving down the fast lane toward some new horizon. At the center of that sound is the craft Terry has been sharpening since his years in Nashville, back when he composed songs for others as a staff writer on Music Row. A grand-prize winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest, Terry established himself as a top-shelf.Jesse's new record: https://open.spotify.com/album/5lpXAMZDC4hqAU0t2AV29Z?si=SpFXPTHsSL-BidKeOtVbgghttps://www.jesseterrymusic.com/Become a podcast member:Join the "What's in a Song" membership community:https://buymeacoffee.com/scarlet.keysMixed by Peter Sykes: https://www.petersykesmusic.com/Otto Gross: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMnxx19QD-vxD4wnYGTn3JwScarlet's website:https://www.scarletkeys.comScarlet's instagram: https://www.instagram.com/scarletkeysofficial/To purchase Scarlet Keys' book "The Craft of Songwriting:https://www.amazon.com/Craft-Songwriting-Music-Meaning-Emotion/dp/0876391927/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2PPScarlet's website: https://www.scarletkeys.comScarlet's instagram: https://www.instagram.com/scarletkeysofficial/To purchase Scarlet Keys' book "The Craft of Songwriting:https://www.amazon.com/Craft-Songwriting-Music-Meaning-Emotion/dp/0876391927/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2PP55NU6E9ST6&keywords=the+craft+of+songwriting&qid=1659573139&sprefix=the+craft+of+songwritin%2Caps%2C153&sr=8-1

I speak with artist and multi-instrumentalist Robert Ellis, one of the best singer-songwriters of his generation. I'll tell you why: first, his songs do what great pop songs do - grab your attention with a hook as sticky as hot honey (check out “Bottle of Wine” for an example), but you get a sense there's always something held in reserve, something that won't be revealed until you come back for a second or third or fourth listen. That might have to do with Robert's respect for the mutable laws of music theory (we talk about the relationship of the V to I cadence as the backbone for all music since Bach), or his sense of play evident in a catalogue that already spans 6 albums across genres as diverse as bluegrass-inspired ripper (“Sing Along”) to 70s' Rock (“Nobody Smokes Anymore”), or the soft spun album “Yesterday's News” reminiscent of Willie Nelson's “Rainbow Connection”.Or it could have to do with the fact that while guitar is his primary instrument (he is a *very* good guitar player) his chops on piano are formidable enough that not only did he release an album on ivories (2019's Texas Piano Man), but he toured it heavily - in a white tux and top hat, often solo at the keys. The Morse Code is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Robert has played Tiny Desk, Mountain Stage, and more recently, Carnegie Hall and collaborated with countless musicians from Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes to Jamestown Revival to Tift Merritt.A few weeks ago he took time off his tour with Parker Millsap to talk with me about his free-spirited approach to songwriting, playing and creativity in general. In this wide-ranging conversation we talk about the narrative parallels between music and  literature, and how even chord progressions have a narrative arc. We talk about the importance of — when evaluating a prospective work of art — shifting the question from “Is it perfect”? to “Is it me?” We even venture into territory of a purely philosophical bent, discussing Free Will and its role in a empathic worldview. Robert is consistent with his meditative practice, and as a father of three, his kids often join in for the morning meditation. We hit on the importance in being absolutely present while both performing and producing, and how that ethos applies to acting. Robert recently acted in a short film, directed by his wife, filmmaker Erica Silverman. He talked a little about that experience which I found revealing and charming and hilarious. Finally, the Texas Troubadour sat down to play his original “On the Run” live in studio on solo guitar. Watch and listen below. There's a lot more in this conversation, one of my favorite ever on this podcast. Get full access to The Morse Code at korby.substack.com/subscribe

Sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnhttps://www.parkermillsap.com/Over the past few years, the world has undergone significant and far-reaching changes, although the perception of these changes may vary depending on one's perspective. When viewed through the lens of geological time, it becomes apparent that not much has changed at all. Parker Millsap, an acclaimed singer/songwriter, delves into this juxtaposition between the present moment and the grander scale of existence in his sixth album, "Wilderness Within You." Through his music, Millsap contemplates humanity's role on this planet, presenting a study in contrasts that encompasses both personal and cosmic themes. The album skillfully combines sparse acoustic compositions with lush psychedelic improvisations, resulting in a captivating exploration of darkness and an expression of profound gratitude for life itself.Raised in Purcell, OK, a small town with an expansive sky, Millsap developed a knack for conveying gratitude through song while playing gospel music in the church band. He drew inspiration from the heartfelt lyrics of Townes Van Zandt, the fingerpicking style of Mississippi John Hurt, and classic albums like "Graceland" and "Rumors." Millsap's earlier works, such as the critically acclaimed albums "Parker Millsap" (2014) and "The Very Last Day" (2016), showcased his influences through character-driven storytelling and minimalist instrumentation. In his 2021 release, "Be Here Instead," produced by John Agnello, Millsap hinted at the wildness that would unfold while exploring new and more personal songwriting styles. "Wilderness Within You" represents a natural progression in Parker's artistic evolution, skillfully interweaving elements from his musical past and diverse influences to create a captivating and beautiful sound.Comprising 13 tracks, "Wilderness Within You" unfolds as a slow-burning crescendo, commencing with the simple yet powerful song "Greetings and Thanks." This track sets to music "The Thanksgiving Address" of the indigenous peoples of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and all proceeds from its sales are donated to the Haudenosaunee Task Force. Millsap explains that this song holds significant meaning, as "The Thanksgiving Address" is traditionally known as "The Words that Come Before All Else." It represents an offering of gratitude to the Earth and all its inhabitants. Millsap's exposure to this concept, as described in Robin Wall-Kimmerer's "Braiding Sweetgrass," profoundly impacted him, and he aims to share this impact with others through his music. For the production of "Wilderness Within You," Millsap teamed up with new collaborator Ryan McFadden and assembled a backing band comprising talented musicians with whom he had minimal prior experience. Musicians such as Ross McReynolds on drums, Calvin Knowles on bass, Juan Solorzano and Mark Sloan on guitar and pedal steel, Ryan Connors and Will Honaker on keys, Jake Botts on saxophone, and Daniel Foulks on fiddle joined him in the recording process. In most cases, these musicians were only introduced to the songs moments before recording began. Millsap also experimented with field recording and tape loop-driven soundscapes, adding a new dimension to his music that had not been heard in his previous recordings. This unconventional recording approach reflects the wild and natural essence of the album, mirroring its title track. On a broader level, "Wilderness Within You" presents profound and weighty questions without providing easy answers. Millsap explains that many of the songs are rooted in his inquiries about the functionality of societal systems, who they benefit, and why, which he hadn't previouslyThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

Today on the show we have Parker Millsap, one of the most soulful and perceptive songwriters that Oklahoma has ever produced, and that's saying something! We hadn't seen Parker since he recorded in the studio in support of his 2018 LP release, Other Arrangements, so it was really great to reconnect to discuss his brand-new album, Be Here Instead. He said that this was the most fun that he's ever had while making a record, chasing unpredictable sounds and that special magic that's always a challenge to find. It's a strong record with honest messages to convey – you might even call it inspirational. We had a great time talking with Parker, learning about his creative process, and we're happy to share that talk with you right now. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Escuchar audio

The Show On The Road with Z. Lupetin

This week, we feature a conversation with one of the rising stars in our current roots music renaissance: a gifted Oklahoma-born singer-songwriter who grew up in the Pentecostal church and creates a fiery gospel backdrop behind his tender then window-rattling rock-n-roll voice: Parker Millsap. When you've been touring hundreds of days a year down southern backroads from Tulsa to Tallahassee since you were a teenager like Parker has, you know a thing or two about how to keep your head when things go off the rails. But it was the forced year-long break during the pandemic that really made him stop and accept how far he's come from his intense, anxious, folky debut Palisade in 2012 (he released it when he was 19), to his soulful self-assured new record Be Here Instead. What's clear is we see a relentlessly hard-working performer who no longer has to chase the next gig for gas money, or has to worry if the world will accept his work. Holed up outside of Nashville with his wife, Millsap let the songs do the talking.

Episode 160 - Garrett Owen. Dan Sterenchuk and Tommy Estlund are honored to have as our guest, Garrett Owen Instead of Little League and sleepovers, Texas-born Garrett Owen's earliest memories involve frequent trips across the Serengeti and backyard wildlife most of us only experience at our local zoos. The son of church-building missionaries, he grew up in Tanzania and Kenya, riding on the luggage rack of the family's Nissan Patrol, with vast clear skies above him and gazelles running beside. After leaving Africa, the family completed a stint in Ecuador before Owen's parents moved the family back to Texas. Life as he knew it became a difficult endeavor; rimmed with the sharp edges of reality in an unfamiliar place, his attempts to settle into a culture he didn't understand resulted in distress and a suicide attempt - a far cry from the idyllic landscape of his upbringing. “Getting to the point where songs could even come out of me at all again took some time,” he remembers. However, Owen's decision to step up to the mic at a songwriters' night in Fort Worth changed his trajectory and reminded him that the goal of pursuing music was no longer at home on the backburner. Now, the award-winning artist, who calls to mind legends like Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, Elliot Smith, and Jesse Winchester, is gearing up to release his second full-length album, Quiet Lives, on September 18th. Though he revisits familiar subject matter such as the push-pull of relationships, love, and loss, Quiet Lives is about growth, informed by the perspective gained from life experience. The diverse 10-track collection delves into more experimental musical territory, as Owen toyed with complex chord changes, melodic dissonance, and intriguing storylines. “At its core, all art is based on a ‘true story,' and by true, I mean the version we carry in our head and heart - the one that can lift or crush your spirit with equal capacity,” the golden-voiced troubadour, who has shared stages with artists like Parker Millsap, Charlie Sexton, and Marty Stuart, explains. “Some suggest that your upbringing explains quirks of personality like my shyness, a tendency for introspection, and streaks of perfectionism. Maybe. I'm not so fatalistic as to believe our earliest experiences necessarily determine the arc of adult life, but my slightly foreign childhood never leaves my music or me. Everybody's got a story to tell,” he adds. “I'm no different.” http://garrett-owen.com/ https://www.facebook.com/GarrettOwenTX http://instagram.com/garrettowentx https://twitter.com/garrettowenTX https://open.spotify.com/artist/7y2CyDlhMd1el8HDgyYuTD Note: Guests create their own bio description for each episode. Kevin Russell (Shinyribs) plays tracks from Okra Candy and talks about Gruene Hall, expanding his band, food porn, and his dangerous dance numbers. On this week’s episode, I have new music from the Waco Brothers, Mount Moriah, and R.B. Stone. Plus I have some blues from that new Lucinda Williams album, a sneak peek at the upcoming Parker Millsap album, and more from Phil Cook, Luther Dickinson, and Malcolm Holcombe.
