Send us Fan MailMUZYCZNE PODSUMOWANIE I KWARTAŁU 2026czyli… wybitne płyty i mocno niecodzienne historie muzyczne ostatnich miesięcy. The latest 95bFM Jazz Show with Def Jim features the work of a number of notable contemporary guitarists, including Miles Okazaki, Julian Lage, Kurt Rosenwinkel, John Scofield, Nels Cline and Terje Rypdal. Following the death of Country Joe McDonald in early March, tribute is paid in the form of a classic Country Joe & The Fish track from the late 60's which has Def Jim remembering that at one time there was a tradition of playing a not-jazz track almost every Jazz Show, a custom which has now lapsed. This Jazz Show finishes with a Michel Benebig Quartet piece recorded live at the ATO Jazz Club in New Lynn, Auckland - out now on Rattle Records.

In this episode, I sit down with mandolinist, composer, and bandleader Jacob Jolliff for a wide-ranging conversation about curiosity, discipline, and building a musical life that resists easy categorization. Jacob is one of those rare musicians who move fluently between bluegrass, jazz, classical, and experimental music without losing his voice in any of them. We begin by talking about his love of variety, why collaboration continues to drive his schedule, and how he follows genuine musical curiosity rather than a rigid career plan. Jacob reflects on touring, playing weekend runs versus more extended tours, and why he's motivated to say yes to projects while the travel still feels energizing.A significant focus of the conversation is Jacob's upcoming classical recording, a mandolin concerto explicitly written for him by composer Jesse Jones. Jacob walks through how the project came together, from a lifelong friendship that began when he was a child to a reunion nearly two decades later, after Jesse had become one of the most respected contemporary classical composers in the country. We talk about performing the concerto with an orchestra, recording the work, memorizing a demanding five-movement piece, and learning the nuanced skills required to follow a conductor while still maintaining musical agency. Jacob explains how the music successfully bridges contemporary classical language with bluegrass sensibilities without feeling like a caricature of either tradition. We also dive deep into Jacob's years at Berklee College of Music and the fertile Boston roots scene that shaped a generation of genre-bending acoustic musicians. Jacob reflects on studying with John McGann, the early days of what would later become Berklee's American Roots program, and coming up alongside players like Alex Hargreaves, Dominick Leslie, Sierra Hull, Julian Lage, Brittany Haas, and others. We talk about why conservatories embracing acoustic and roots instruments have changed the musical landscape and why this moment feels uniquely exciting for mandolin, fiddle, and banjo players.Jacob shares the origin story of his band, including how his time with Yonder Mountain String Band prepared him to lead a project of his own. We talk about the balance between being a sideman and a bandleader, why the best leaders often have deep experience in both roles, and how empathy grows when you've carried responsibility from both sides of the bandstand. Jacob walks through how his lineup evolved, why consistency eventually mattered more than flexibility, and how his current band came together organically around shared priorities and musical trust. We spend time talking about Jacob's jazz projects, including his standards recordings and the unusual instrumentation of mandolin, bass clarinet, snare drum, and bass. Jacob explains why learning jazz still feels like learning a second language, how making records can be part of the learning process rather than a final statement, and why exploring multiple genres keeps his playing honest. We also talk about his admiration for musicians who dedicate their lives to a single tradition, even as he continues to thrive as a musical generalist. We close with a thoughtful discussion about Jacob's practice routine, discipline, and mindset. He explains why he practices nearly every day, how consistency prevents stagnation, and why regularly confronting technical and musical walls is part of long-term growth. Jacob speaks candidly about the psychological challenges of being a driven musician, the tension between ambition and perspective, and why staying curious ultimately matters more than perfection. It's an honest, inspiring conversation about craft, patience, and the lifelong pursuit of musical depth. To learn more about Jacob, visit his website. Episode Summary: In this episode of Backstage Bay Area, we sit down with two-time Grammy Award-winning pianist and composer Taylor Eigsti. A Menlo Park native who released his debut album at age 14, Eigsti has evolved from a local prodigy into one of the most versatile and celebrated voices in modern jazz. Fresh off his 2025 Grammy win for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album (Plot Armor), Eigsti joins us to discuss his deep Bay Area roots, the emotional architecture of his latest compositions, and his upcoming homecoming performance at SFJAZZ.In This Episode:· From Prodigy to Peer: Eigsti reflects on his upbringing in a music-filled household, the profound influence of his late sister and father, and the pivotal mentorship he received from local legends like Dr. Herb Wong and Bud Spangler.· The Animation of "Sparky": We dive into the backstory of "Sparky" from the album Tree Falls. Eigsti reveals how the 1987 animated film Sparky's Magic Piano—a childhood favorite about humility and practice—inspired the track's structure and its complex, 130-track production.· Crowdsourcing a Symphony: Eigsti breaks down his massive 2022 commission for the Hewlett Foundation, "Imagine Our Future." He explains the Herculean task of weaving over 100 diverse submissions from Northern California youth—ranging from poetry to visual art—into a cohesive piece for a 12-person ensemble.· Turning Grief into Art: In a deeply personal segment, Eigsti opens up about "Fire Within" from his latest album, Plot Armor. He discusses the process of adapting his late mother's writings on dementia into lyrics, brought to life through a poignant collaboration with vocalist Lisa Fischer and guitarist Julian Lage.· SFJAZZ Preview: A look ahead to his January 17th double bill at Miner Auditorium with saxophonist Melissa Aldana. Eigsti introduces his band for the evening—Oscar Seton (drums), Charles Altera (guitar), and Jonathan Marin (bass)—and hints at the unique energy of this specific lineup.Featured Music:· "Sparky" – from Tree Falls (2021) · "Fire Within" – from Plot Armor (2024) Key Links:· Get Tickets for SFJAZZ show: Taylor Eigsti & Melissa Aldana at SFJAZZ (Jan 17)· Stream the Album: Listen to Plot Armor on Spotify· Watch: Sparky's Magic Piano (YouTube)· Artist Website: Taylor Eigsti Official Site

Today, we're putting The Tonearm's needle on guitarist Nels Cline. Most people know Nels Cline as Wilco's guitarist for the past two decades. But his range goes far beyond indie rock. He's spent forty-plus years moving between jazz clubs, punk venues, and studios where the rules get bent or thrown out entirely. Rolling Stone put him on their list of the top 100 guitarists of all time, but that tells you nothing about how he actually plays. His current project, Trio of Bloom, pairs him with keyboardist Craig Taborn and drummer Marcus Gilmore on Pyroclastic Records. The three had never played together before producer David Breskin brought them into the studio in November 2024. What came out sounds like a band that's been working together for years, full of ambient drift and barbed funk that explores the outer edges of dub.(The musical excerpts heard in the interview are from Trio of Bloom's self-titled album)–Dig DeeperArtist and AlbumVisit Nels Cline at nelscline.com and follow him on Instagram and FacebookVisit Craig Taborn at craigtaborn.com and follow him on InstagramVisit Marcus Gilmore at drummerslams.com and follow him on InstagramPurchase Trio of Bloom from Bandcamp or Qobuz and listen on your streaming platform of choiceTrio of Bloom on Pyroclastic RecordsCollaborators and ProducerDavid Breskin - producer, poet, and creative catalystKris Davis - founder of Pyroclastic RecordsPyroclastic Records - independent label supporting creative musicKey Groups and Projects MentionedWilco - Nels Cline has been guitarist since 2004The Nels Cline Singers - long-running experimental projectNels Cline 4 - featuring Julian Lage, Scott Colley, and Tom RaineyConsentrik Quartet - with Ingrid Laubrock, Chris Lightcap, and Tom Rainey on Blue Note RecordsCover Songs ReferencedTerje Rypdal - What Comes After (ECM, 1974) - source of "Bend It"Wayne Shorter & Milton Nascimento - Native Dancer (Columbia, 1975) - source of "Diana"Ronald Shannon Jackson & Decoding Society - Eye On You (About Time, 1980) - source of "Nightwhistlers"Original Compositions ReferencedInitiate by Nels Cline Singers (Cryptogramophone, 2010) - source of "Forge" and "King Queen" (which became "Queen King")Marcus Gilmore - "Breath"Craig Taborn - "Unreal Light" and "Why Canada"Nels Cline - "Eye Shadow Eye," "Gone Bust"Free improvisation - "Bloomers"Visual ArtSharon Core - painter whose flower series adorns the albumIrving Penn - photographer whose 1980 'Flowers' series inspired Core's paintingsYancey Richardson Gallery - representing Sharon CoreHistorical ReferencesPower Tools - Bill Frisell, Melvin Gibbs, Ronald Shannon Jackson trio produced by David Breskin (1987)John Zorn's Cobra - game piece and performance systemThe Knitting Factory (original NYC venue) - seminal downtown jazz and experimental music venueNYC Venues MentionedThe Stone - John Zorn's performance spaceRoulette - experimental music venue in BrooklynVillage Vanguard - legendary jazz clubLittlefield - Brooklyn venue (now closed)The Bellhouse - Brooklyn music venueiBeam Music Brooklyn - performance spaceGet MoreDig into this episode's complete show notes at podcast.thetonearm.com–• Did you enjoy this episode? Guitarist Ben Garnett has released a beautiful new album, Kite's Keep, and this episode features clips and insights from the project. The record includes collaborations with acoustic music greats familiar to listeners of this podcast, including Darol Anger and Brittany Haas. Ben's mentor, Chris Eldridge of the Punch Brothers, also appears, and Ben discusses the wisdom he's gained from other influential musicians in his life, among them his cousin, acclaimed rock guitarist Andy Timmons, the brilliant Julian Lage, and bandleader Missy Raines. He also talks about how playing tuba was helpful, and how he immersed himself in a range of musical styles—studying jazz in university before finding his way into Nashville's acoustic bluegrass scene.Like all my episodes, you can watch this on my YouTube channel or listen to the podcast on many podcast platforms, and I've also linked the transcript. While we're on a brief hiatus from making all-new episodes, we thought it would be fun to compile all the moments where Paul asks his guests "What Was The First Record You Ever Bought?" and put them in a couple of "clip shows." Last week was part one, so here's part two, featuring Shannon Shaw (from Shannon & The Clams), Joey Santiago (from Pixies), Julian Lage, Steve Perry, Slash, The Heavy Heavy, Ben Folds, John Densmore (The Doors), and bass ace Tony Levin (King Crimson, John Lennon and more). There's no disputing the influence B.B. King has had on the history of electric guitar music. With Lucille in hand—as well as other guitars—he carved out his sound by developing a signature one-of-a-kind vibrato and pick attack. His note choice, phrasing, and feel have basically become the fundamental vocabulary of electric blues. Even more than any other of his blues peers, his playing shaped blues and rock guitar. And that's not to mention his singing. So, on this episode of 100 Guitarists, we're celebrating the King. We're talking about his sound, his best records, his guitars, his showmanship, and his collabs, from an all-star jam at the 2010 Crossroads festival to, yes, even his 1988 U2 collab, “When Love Comes to Town.”In our current listening segment, we're talking about Brian John McBrearty's recent meditation-jazz release Remembering Repeating and Julian Lage's latest, Apple Music Nashville Sessions.Brought to you by Gibson Guitars: http://gibson.comFollow Nick: https://www.instagram.com/nickmillevoiFollow Jason: https://www.instagram.com/jasonshadrickGet at us: 100guitarists@premierguitar.comCall/Text: 319-423-9734Podcast powered by Sweetwater. We hope you like innovative jazz-based electric guitarists, because our first episode of 2025 focuses on two of 'em. Jeff Parker is here to talk about his recent jazz album for Nonesuch, The Way Out Of Easy, credited to Jeff Parker And The ETA IVtet. Parker talks about working with his L.A. based quartet, which features bassist Anna Butterss, drummer Jay Bellerose, and saxophone player, Josh Johnson, but we also look back at his highly musical time in the windy city of Chicago, where he first made a name for himself with groups such as Tortoise. This episode gives us an excuse to reprise our interview with prodigious jazz guitarist Julian Lage discussing his RSD Exclusive release, Live In Los Angeles, that first ran as part of our RSD Black Friday 2024 coverage. His dedication to his craft is palpable. We are treated to a live performance, where he flawlessly demonstrates his fingerpicking techniques, and for the first time we are graced with his vocal abilities as a solo artist. This hour of pure musical magic will leave you wanting more. Sit back, relax, and let the words and music of Noah Cole whisk you away on a journey of sound and emotion. This is not just an interview, it's an experience. Let's dive in and discover the depth of talent and passion within this rising star. See playlist below for the recorded music played in this episode

This episode of Across The Margin : The Podcast features an interview with acclaimed violinist and composer Jenny Scheinman. Scheinman has produced several critically acclaimed solo albums, including 12 Songs, named one of the Top Ten Albums of 2005 by The New York Times. She has played with Norah Jones, Nels Cline, Lou Reed, Ani Difranco, Aretha Franklin, Lucinda Williams, Bono, Bill Frisell, and Allison Miller. For years, Scheinman nursed the idea of a musical homage to Humboldt, in particular the area known as the Lost Coast, a remote, earthquake and mudslide-prone region of coastal northern California, where she was raised. She considered the project from many angles. That idea has come to fruition in the form of her latest album entitled All Species Parade, the focus of this episode. All Species Parade is an epic and sprawling double album with an A-list ensemble, featuring guitarists Bill Frisell, Julian Lage and Nels Cline, pianist Carmen Staaf, bassist Tony Scherr and drummer Kenny Wollesen. Though the album does evoke a sense of pastoral wonder, it also strives to capture in Jenny's words, “a charged relationship to nature, a feeling of being part of something bigger than ourselves, powerful, and fragile, and constantly changing. Something alive. With All Species Parade, I set out to musically reflect that experience of awe.” In this episode host Michael Shields and Jenny Scheinman discuss how nature, and a personal musical challenge of Jenny's regarding song length and breadth, inspired the soundscapes found on All Species Parade. They talk about the outstanding grouping of players on the album, how Jenny paid tribute to the Wiyot Tribe with the song “Jaroujiji,” what the true meaning of the song “Shutdown Stomp” actually is, and so much more. Margaret Glaspy joins me on the show this week. Her album from last year “Echo The DIamond” was one of my favorite records of the year. Margaret started out as a fiddle player, and played pretty seriously around California as a youngster before dedicating herself to the guitar and eventually going to Berklee for a short time to study. She played around Boston and then moved to New York where she found her way into the creative music scene in Brooklyn in the mid 2000's. She started making EP's and then full-legth albums in around 2016. I first heard her “Emotions and Math” LP and was really intrigued by her approach to writing, and especially how she seemed to build intricate, angular guitar parts that would weave through her songs. “Devotion” came next in 2020, and then “Echo The Diamond” in 2023. On “Echo”, her songwriting is incredible, her guitar playing is intense and jagged, the band is stellar (she's working with Chris Morrissey who has played with Andrew Bird and Ben Kweller, and David King, the drummer for The Bad Plus). Welcome back to Aquarium Drunkard Transmissions, our weekly series of illuminating interviews and contextual conversations. This week on the show, guitarist and composer Julian Lage. A child prodigy in his youth, Lage has commanded attention for decades for his guitar prowess—he performed at the GRAMMYs at the tender age of 12—and he's accompanied a truly staggering roster of artists over the years, including John Zorn, Nels Cline, Bill Frisell, Yoko Ono, Gary Burton, and more. But on his latest album, the Blue Note release Speak To Me, Lage often presents himself as something of a singer/songwriter—minus the singing, that is. Joined by a five-piece band and producer Joe Henry, Lage careens from jittery free jazz to classic West Coast pop, maintaining a careful flow that feels generous but considered, diverse but not haphazard. This week on Transmissions, he discusses connecting to his musical center, cutting himself some slack, and how Henry helped him know when songs were "done enough." Jeff Tweedy of Wilco joins us for a wide ranging conversation about Solid Sound, his books, and his Jim O'Rourke side project Loose Fur.
Incoming transmission. On this episode of our weekly podcast, singer/songwriter Leyla McCalla joins us to discuss the new sonic terrain of her latest album, Sun Without The Heat. Though her earlier work with groups like the Carolina Chocolate Drops and on her own was often classified as Americana, this album finds her shifting into a blurrier, more dynamic zone, where Afrobeat, Tropicalismo, post-rock, and sleek funk all share space. Inspired by Afrofuturistic ecological writings, the natural world, and her own experiences, it's a record that showcases an artist stepping into a new position, that of an interpreter of alternate sonic histories, an art-pop imagineer casting brand new shapes.
