For the uninitiated, the High Hawks are a Bluegrass/Americana music supergroup featuring members of Leftover Salmon, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades, Hard Working Americans, Railroad Earth and Great American Taxi. Mother Nature's Show is actually the band's sophomore effort and demonstrates a lot of growth in this band's combined effort. I caught up with Vince Herman Leftover Salmon's frontman and one of the High Hawks vocalists and guitar players and Chad Staehly the High Hawks keyboard player to get a status check on the band's evolution, the song writing process and how Mother Nature's Show came together.    First song: Temperature Is Rising Second song: Top Shelf, Rock BottomSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

UnMind: Zen Moments With Great Cloud

ZEN AT WORK, AT HOME, AT PLAY This segment of UnMind is based on some questions raised by one of the members of ASZC. While she moved out of the Atlanta area, she stays in touch through weekly participation in my Online Dharma Dialog program. As an aside, if you think you may be interested in establishing a dialog about your practice, let me know via email — you can find my address on the ASZC web page. This person was not born in the USA, and so has the compound complications in her daily life of assimilating into a foreign culture, and communicating in a second language, much as Matsuoka Roshi had to do in bringing Zen to America back in 1940. Her questions are as insightful and revealing as Sensei's choice of areas of life in America to relate to Zen in his dharma talks. We will be publishing many of them in a new collection called “A Pioneer of American Zen: The Wisdom, Warmth and Wit of Soyu Matsuoka, Roshi.” Keep a sharp eye out for it in June of next year. Let us turn to her questions, addressing each of them from a perspective of Zen and Design Thinking. They are primarily about relationships with other people, and how they affect your relationship to yourself, if that is not too redundant. We will take them on in a slightly different order than submitted, beginning with those that have to do with the work environment, and the community of colleagues we find there. These work-related issues, taken together, come under the rubric of “Right Livelihood,” on the traditional Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism. 1. How does one practice being grounded, or doing the right thing, in a competitive world? The answer to any such question, from a Zen perspective, will necessarily include taking the issue to the cushion, in zazen, and then bringing any conclusions and recommendations from what transpires on the cushion back to the office, laboratory, or whatever context in which you find yourself working. Let's contextualize this issue a bit to begin with, looking at the bigger picture before boiling it down to any personally actionable items. I think it necessary and reasonable to suggest, and to take into account, that the very nature of the zeitgeist of right livelihood in our times adds to the stress load that we are carrying on our shoulders today. This is not your daddy's job market. And it certainly is not the one that Buddha confronted, nor any of the other Zen masters in the lineage from India, China, or Japan. The very scope of manifold options available today, choosing between jobs and side hustles that may seem to offer advantages in terms of flex-time or working from home, versus employer preferences for dragging you into the office — entailing social dimensions of in-person contact with associates and management — may simply add to the frustration of making the right choice of career, and its accompanying working modality, for each individual. Choices between careers that allow for remote employment and those that don't are becoming yet another factor in whether one chooses to train in various trades, or aspire to what used to be called “higher learning.” This so-called higher learning basically amounts to preparation for a professional trade, instead of one based on hands-on skills and hourly labor, quaintly referred to as “blue-collar” jobs, or the Hard Working Americans politicians love to talk about. As if they themselves are hard-working. Many are opting for the simplicity of the latter, where they may make a dependable living wage, in many cases higher than their counterparts, in what used to be called “white-collar” occupations. Naturally, time-of-life considerations come into play, as articulated by those who research these kinds of issues, such as part-time student employment, married with children, empty nester, the “sandwich generation,” and so forth. Daily life is so complicated these days that we may need to develop the “Sixteen Noble Truths,” and the “Fifty-four-fold Noble Path.” One dimension being paying off student debt. As testament to the scale of complexity of this question, if you search “being grounded in a competitive world,” you get: About 688,000,000 results (0.44 seconds) Somewhere in that virtual warehouse full of pages you may find the kind of advice that fits your situation, but it is entirely possible that you will not. Access to unlimited information is not necessarily a solution to this problem, or any other aspect of living a Zen life, in the midst of the chaos of modern society. More information just adds insult to injury. But from the perspective of Design Thinking and Zen, let's consider just the single aspect of what we mean by “competition.” Here, let's include a second, corollary question: 2. How to avoid harboring resentment when you are with the same people on a daily basis, and you have some history [of conflict]. I developed a couple of concepts for exhibits, working with some of the subcommittees and sponsoring corporations in the leadup to the 1996 Summer Olympics here in Atlanta, who were then marketing the event around the emergent issues of recycling, reusing, and repurposing of waste materials. The various Atlanta-based sponsors wanted to get credit for their efforts in this endeavor, for being “environmentally friendly,” touting its implications for the ecosystem, the “good citizenship” of corporations, and so on. In one of many meetings, it dawned on me, with startling clarity, that the seeming distinction between competition and cooperation is one without a real difference. That is, in team sports, such as basketball or soccer, the outcome is usually determined by which team manages to better cooperate amongst its members, beating those who are beset by individuals showing off, “hot-dogging,” “show-boating,” and often missing the play that another member might have made. Sports that are more dependent upon individual performance, such as skiing, speed skating, or swimming, are less dependent upon collaboration. That is, until one takes into consideration the training process that leads to elite performance. The athletes' collaboration with their coach or coaches, and their level of ability to take direction, as well as the wisdom of the coaching staff, become determinative factors in their success. For athletes already at or near the top of their game, the coach does not have to move their dial very much, raising the bar as high as humanly possible. Think Michael Jordan, or Katie Ledecky. However, as in Zen meditation training, if the athlete is not willing to do the work, no amount of coaching, however skillful, is going to help. Bringing it back down to earth, one thing to consider is a truism: the strongest competition is to be found in cooperation. Or, better, collaboration. And remember, the modern theory of collaboration is that it is only possible, or at least most doable, between two individuals. Think Lennon and McCartney. Or Lenin and Trotsky. If you are suffering from “bad boss syndrome,” or feeling excluded from the good-old-boy network at work, try homing in on each of your apparent competitors — or, worst-case, enemies — one at a time. Get them alone in a private setting, non-threatening and away from the fray, off-campus and out-of-office. Interview them as to their aspirations, beyond the obvious goals and objectives in the company. See if you cannot find some common ground on which to build a better, more collaborative relationship, while still keeping it professional. Try this with all your co-workers. Begin with the least competitive to yourself and work your way up the ladder. Remembering the old nostrum: Be kind to those you meet on your way up the ladder; they will be the same ones you meet on the way down. On the personal front, remember to foster the “halo effect” of Zen, in particular the three dispositions of zazen, when you find yourself stressing out at your work station or in the board room. Assume the posture. Follow the breath, counting if necessary. Expand your attention to include everything, without bias. As the ancient Ch'an poem encourages us: Move among and intermingle without distinction. Your body and mind will appreciate it — including your neuronal networks, heartbeat, and endocrine system. So will your fellow workers. They may begin wondering, and asking, how you can be so calm? when everyone else is freaking out, usually over trivia. Extensions of this approach include chanting on the commute, meditating while walking through the campus and buildings where you work, and treating the vicissitudes of the day as Dharma. Buddha's teaching, and the practice of Zen, is only one thing. But that “one thing” is all-inclusive. The Yogi welcomes adverse circumstance as grist to the mill. “Through change, consume change,” as the ancient admonition has it. And change, after all, is all there is. You will never run out of it. Next time we will look at other more personal aspects of relationships, expressed in other incisive questions from the same, sincere source. If you find such issues bubbling up in your everyday swim in the ocean of Samsara, please don't hesitate to send them to me — again, you may find my email on the ASZC web page. And check out my two available books on this timelier-than-ever subject: “The Original Frontier”; and “The Razorblade of Zen” (see links in the post). Meanwhile, keep on sitting. Someday you will find your zazen to be “still enough,” and for “long enough,” to overcome all obstacles at work, at home, and at play.

Dave has also played in a number of different bands including Stockholm Syndrome, Gov't Mule, J Mascis & The Fog, and Hard Working Americans, which Dave also produced.  Dave has also most recently worked with Andy Frasco, producing Andy's latest album.  Personally, Dave is a beacon of light, love and compassion, and his deep love of music and humankind comes across in everything he does. The Sound Podcast with Ira Haberman

Neal Casal was a brilliant musician, singer, songwriter, and music aficionado who we lost way to early back in 2019. Like everyone else who crossed his path, I was devastated to hear that Neal sadly took his own life, just days after performing at the Lockn' Festival. He was such a kind and gentle soul who was always ready to share his time talking about his own music, the music he collaborated on, and music more generally. I had the great pleasure of welcoming him to this show a couple of times and met him just a few months prior to his passing.  Gary Waldman, Neal's manager, wanted to extend his close friend's legacy and organized a benefit show just a month after Neal's death where various artists performed at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY. That show brought in a sizeable amount of money to the Neal Casal Music Foundation, which distributes instruments and lessons to students in the New Jersey and New York schools.  Realizing the impact of that show, and wanting to further Neal's legacy, Waldman decided he'd draw up plans for an ambitious recording project that would see artists contribute recordings of Casal's music. That project, Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal was co-produced by his old pal Dave Schools of Widespread Panic and Neal's band mate in Hard Working Americans and legendary rock producer Jim Scott. The five LP/3 CD box set was just recently released. The proceeds from the project will of course rest with the Neal Casal Music Foundation and a portion of which have already been earmarked for MusicCares and Backline a mental health organization for musicians.  To do our part, we sat down with the great Jim Scott to talk about this project, and of course Neal Casal whom Jim had worked with. To learn more about the Neal Casal Music Foundation visit:https://nealcasalmusicfoundation.org/To Purchase Highway Butterfly, The Songs of Neal Casal:https://nealcasalmusicfoundation.org/store/highway-butterflyAbout Neal Casal:Neal Casal was born in Denville, New Jersey in 1968. He was a songwriter, singer, guitarist, record producer, photographer, surfer and friend. When his parents divorced in the mid-70's, Neal moved with his mom from NJ to Georgia to California, before coming back to NJ and growing up in Rockaway, NJ. After graduating high school in 1987 and the end of his high school rock band, Exire, Neal started working at a guitar store called The Music Maker in Hackettstown, NJ. It was there he met a musician named Davis Jaynes, who would become Neal's mentor and a huge influence on his guitar style. They would play guitar together at the store all day and spent a year or so playing shows together around New Jersey, where Neal would develop the sound that would become the foundation of his solo career. Neal would go on to appear on multiple recordings as a member of bands like Circles Around the Sun, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Beachwood Sparks, The Skiffle Players and Hard Working Americans. He added his sublime musical touch to studio sessions and live performances by a long list of artists, including Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Sheryl Crow, Lucinda Williams, The Jayhawks, James Iha and Vetiver. His vast body of solo work was embraced by audiences worldwide and continues to be rediscovered in his passing. With the formation of the Neal Casal Music Foundation, the body of work Casal left behind, including an extensive archive of unreleased material, will be reimagined to further shine a light on his artistry, while providing resources to raise money for positive change. Neal Casal brought joy to so many and, in his absence, the foundation created in his name will further that purpose. It also hopes to reflect back to Casal the beauty he brought to this world in pursuit of a life dedicated to music and art.Neal Graeme CasalNovember 2, 1968 – August 26, 2019

Highway Butterfly: The Stories of Neal Casal

Billy Strings first saw Neal Casal perform with Hard Working Americans, then soon after heard Circles Around the Sun (CATS) and became inspired by Neal's tastefully restrained playing style. He had an opportunity to jam with Neal at a festival and discussed recording with CATS, which unfortunately would never transpire. But when Billy came to PLYRZ Studio to record "All The Luck in The World," from Neal's 1996 album Rain, Wind and Speed, as the first single from Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal, Circles Around the Sun was the backing band and something about it felt right. Dave Schools met Neal Casal the day they were set to go into Bob Weir's TRI Studio to record what would become the debut Hard Working Americans record. Bonding over Col. Bruce Hampton after a session, it didn't take too long for the two music lovers to become fast friends. Neal traded Dave his 2012 album Sweeten the Distance for a Hampton Grease Band album and Dave was blown away by Neal's capabilities as a singer and songwriter. Dave co-produced Highway Butterfly: The Songs of Neal Casal, and is an enthusiastic champion of the Neal Casal Music Foundation's mission. I first heard about the High Hawks, an all-star Americana outfit consisting of players from mostly the jamgrass scene from Chad Staehly of Hard Working Americans and Great American Taxi when I talked to him a few months back about the John Hartford tribute record, and the band’s contribution of Waugh Paugh.  The band includes, Vince Herman (Leftover Salmon), Tim Carbone (Railroad Earth), Chad Staehly (Hard Working Americans),  Adam Greuel (Horseshoes & Hand Grenades), Brian Adams (DeadPhish Orchestra), and Will Trask (Great American Taxi).   Together, the band blends the sounds each member is known for and offer up a fresh take with original tunes and one cover on their debut release due out June 11th on LoHi records. I caught up with Tim Carbone and Chad Staehly to talk about the release and the band. The conversation started when I mentioned to the guys that our studio is about 5 miles away from where Ronnie Hawkins and The Hawks used to play. That band, became “The Band”, who sort of invented Americana music. I suggested there were some similarities at least in sound between the band The Hawks became and the High Hawks which amused Tim Carbone… First Song: 00:14: Waugh Paugh Interview Begins: 04:48 Extro Song: 48:53: Heroes & Highways See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On Episode 114 of New Slang, I'm joined by country singer-songwriter Zephaniah OHora. The country crooning OHora is releasing Listening To The Music, his stellar follow-up to 2017 standout This Highway, this coming Friday, August 28. With the late great Neal Casal (The Cardinals, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Hard Working Americans) at the producing helm, OHora, Casal, and company create a distinct, elegant, and lush sonic palette. Taking cues from some of the greats of the '60s and '70s, OHora blends the gentle, light airiness of Countrypolitan with the hard rolling rhythms of trucker country. Ever the crooner, OHora's gleaming vocals are as beaming with power as they are delicate and nurturing. Throughout Listening To The Music, OHora pairs that iconic voice with nuanced and thoughtful lyrics about everyday life, tragic heartbreak, and late nights. Songs like lead single "All American Singer" is a modern-day common man anthem while the likes of "It's Not So Easy Today" and "We Planned To Have It All" are dejected tearjerker ballads. The rollicking "Living Too Long" fills in as a highway humming pedal stomper.During this interview, we talk about releasing an album as an independent artist in 2020, recording the album with Neal Casal (and other Casal stories), the background on this crop of songs, OHora's songwriting process, music (and life) philosophies, becoming a father, the unknown effects of Social Media, and several other topics. As an emerging female country artist in Nashville, history suggests that the quickest path to success is somehow aligning oneself with one of the major publishers, producers, songwriters, labels, or managers that are the heart of Music Row. So what do you do if you are an emerging female country artist in Nashville, and also happen to be the granddaughter of musical icon, Willie Nelson? You hook up with an independent producer and veteran of the rock/punk scene, write some songs that are part Loretta Lynn, part Cheap Trick, and form the Raelyn Nelson Band. Raelyn Nelson has been singing since she can remember. Having been raised on a steady diet of traditional country and gospel music, a gift from her grandpa in the form of a guitar during her teenage years was the inspiration she needed to begin writing her own country and folk songs. Looking for a place to record these songs, a mutual friend suggested JB (Jonathan Bright), a veteran of the underground rock scene and independent producer. After recording some of these early songs, they decided to try to write some things together and see what happened. The result? A completely fresh and original sound, a true hybrid referred to by some critics as “Country/Garage Rock.” When they aren’t recording their songs or making music videos, they are on the road taking their high energy live show to the people. Having shared the stage with such diverse musical acts as country superstar Tim McGraw, indie rock icons Drivin’ n Cryin’, and jam band supergroup Hard Working Americans, the RNB is proving that you don’t have to fit neatly into any particular “genre” to find success. “I don’t really have any desire to be a ‘solo-artist’. Everyone in my family who plays music has always placed a lot of importance on band chemistry, on stage, off stage, and in the studio. Our band can almost read each other’s minds. Why would I mess with that? We try to keep it simple: Write songs we like, record them, make a video, then go out and play them for people.”- Raelyn Nelson

Neal Casal is an accomplished guitarist whose interesting career has led him from Blackfoot in the late 80s to the singer/songwriter world in the 90s to Ryan Adams in “The Oughts” and then onto Phil Lesh to his current adventurous band Circles Around The Sun. Seth and Rob spoke with him before Circles took the stage at the Terminal West in Atlanta. The conversation starts with a discussion about the unique way this band came together and how the members push each other to continue to reinvent the music in the spontaneous nature it was initially created. We the jump in “the wayback machine” and learn about how this New Jersey kid ended up being the lead guitarist of what many say is the best incarnation of Ryan Adams and The Cardinals. He also elaborates on the organic genesis of the band, Brotherhood (with Chris Robinson) and the raw beauty of the Hard-Working Americans (with Dave Schools and the ever-enigmatic Todd Snider). The show opens with a brief phone conversation featuring Joel Cummins of Umphrey’s McGee. We learn about his new and wildly informative book, “The Realist’s Guide To a Successful Music Career” which he wrote with author/entrepreneur Matt DeCoursey. Joel and Rob walk through just some of the many pieces of music career strategy wisdom that this book offers. It is a “must-read” for anyone seriously contemplating a dive into the business of music. wTnS Sponsors: Polay + Clark 21st Century Accounting (Don't wait till April and get screwed, get Polayed) www.polayclark.com CBD Vermont: wTnS is sponsored by CBD Vermont, which partners with organic farms in Vermont to produce organically-grown hemp used in full spectrum extracts, available for sale at CBDVermont.com. Before Seth and Rob get into the Candler Park Festival Flash Chats with Allie Kral and Duane Trucks, they discuss the Brooklyn Bowl, Questlove, Terrapin Beer Company, Seth's festival work trip and Rob's Colorado trip. The first of two festival flash chats is with Duane Trucks where they discuss the growth of Hard-Working Americans, the influence of legendary musicians like his father-in-law Jimmy Herring, Col. Bruce Hampton, Yonrico Scott, Kevin Scott, Jeff Sipe and his brother Derek Trucks. The trio also discusses Duane's path to locking-in with bassist Dave Schools. Next up is Allie Kral as she talks about her work with Cornmeal, how to make an impromptu band work, "The Kral Space," Marilyn Monroe moments, teaching herself violin, jamming with Bela Fleck, moe. and others. She also addresses the gut-wrenching task of informing Cornmeal her intentions to leave them, how the behavior of a creepy photographer inspired her future stage attire and we hear the genesis of a new activity for the Strings and Sol Festival in Mexico. Have a listen and see if you can figure out what the point is. Let me know? (and yes, I realize that I could just listen to it myself, but I don’t want to!)
