Cristina Allen is the cofounder of Volans Tequila and it's no lie to say that she rocks! Born and raised in Mexico, she brought her love of tequila to the US when she arrived to study sound engineering. She spent 5 years in LA working the boards at such legendary venues as the Roxy and the Troubador, and moved with her husband Chad to Boise where she took the reigns at the Knitting Factory. The pandemic caused her to shift gears and soon she & Chad were devoted to their other love - tequila! They now produce additive free and small batch tequilas, and yes, she still loves heavy metal and classic rock. I finished The Godfather, and give my final thoughts on the fucker. (You won't have to hear about it again. At least not for a long time. Probably.) I saw that movie “The Apprentice” about young Trump and Roy Cohn. I was lulled in by suggestions that it was “objective” and almost “sympathetic” to the man; spoiler alert: it wasn't. I talk about the Will Haven/Strife show at the Troubador.   *Editor's Note: The song I was referring to was “SAIL,” from AWOL Nation. Not “Air,” as I erroneously portended.

Fleetwood Mac's BILLY BURNETTE: One Helluva Rockabilly Musical Tale

A Breath of Fresh Air

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 6, 2024 52:00

Born in Memphis, singer/songwriter/guitarist, Billy Burnette spent most of his youth in the presence of father Dorsey and uncle Johnny (of the legendary Rock and Roll Trio).  The Trio made the Rockabilly name famous by combining the name Billy and his cousin Rocky for the 1953 “Rockabilly Boogie” – thus making the term Rockabilly a household name. The legendary trio influenced a diverse array of Rock icons including: the Elvis, Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Rod Stewart, Aerosmith, and Ricky Nelson. Elvis used to spend many evenings jamming with the band. It's not surprising then that Billy started making music at the age of 7. At 15 Billy picked up a guitar and began writing songs.  At 18, he was only a week out of high school when he recorded an album with famed Memphis hit-making producer Chips Moman (“Suspicious Minds” and “In the Ghetto” for Elvis). In his early 20's, Billy wrote songs for artists like Rod Stewart, Ray Charles, Roy Orbison, Tammy Wynette, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Everly Brothers, Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, Glen Campbell, and many more. In 1980, Billy met Mick Fleetwood (of Fleetwood Mac).  The two musicians became fast friends and formed the band Mick Fleetwood's Zoo Soon after Billy began his journey as a member of one of the greatest rock bands of all time.  Billy joined and toured with Fleetwood Mac between 1987-1995, appearing on many of their albums. In 2003, Billy co-wrote a tune for Bonnie Raitt and Ray Charles called “Do I Ever Cross Your Mind.” This tune appeared on the album Genius Loves Company, which was the last studio album that Ray Charles recorded and completed. The album garnered 10 Grammy nominations and won Album of the Year. In 2006, Billy Burnette returned to his roots and recorded one of the most revered Rockabilly albums of his career, Memphis in Manhattan.  He not only recorded several original tunes – but also payed tribute to his father and uncle, by recording “It's Late” and “Tear it Up.”   In addition, he recorded an Everly Brothers classic, “Bye, Bye Love,” and a song made popular by none other than his very own Memphis neighbour, Elvis: “Big Hunk of Love.” A collaboration with Shawn Camp and Dennis Morgan became the hit song “River of Love.” George Strait recorded the tune for his 2008 album Troubador, and “River of Love” went on to become Strait's 44th Number One hit single. In the last few years, Billy Burnette has contributed his talents as a guitar player and singer on tours with legendary musicians Bob Dylan and John Fogerty. Additionally, he also collaborates regularly with the Mick Fleetwood Band. Billy continues to write, record and perform today. He lives in Nashville and is still as passionate about making music as he has always been. I hope you enjoy the story of Billy Burnette's musical journey. If you'd like to learn more about him, check out his website http://billyburnette.net/ and if you'd like to suggest a guest you'd like to hear interviewed on A Breath of Fresh Air, reach out to me through my website https://www.abreathoffreshair.com.au

For the first time in the run of this podcast (though certainly not the last!) today we have a poem in translation. Marisa Galvez joins Close Readings to discuss "The Song of Nothing," a poem by the first attested troubadour, William IX. The poem is something like 900 years old, and Marisa helps us see both its strangeness and the sense in which it feels like it might have been written yesterday. You'll hear Marisa read the poem both in an English translation and in its original language, Old Occitan, where its musicality and verve really come through. This was a fascinating conversation about how poems are made—and why, and who and what for—with lessons to offer both about the medieval period and about the poems and songs we encounter today.Marisa Galvez is Professor of French and Italian (and, by courtesy, of German Studies and of Comparative Literature) at Stanford University, where she specializes in the literature of the Middle Ages in France and Western Europe, especially the poetry and narrative literature written in Occitan and Old French. She is the author of two books, both published by University of Chicago Press: Songbook: How Lyrics Became Poetry in Medieval Europe (2012) and The Subject of Crusade: Lyric, Romance, and Materials, 1150-1500 (2020). Her current book project concerns contemporary and modern translations of medieval lyric and how they propose new ways of "lyric knowing" the Global South.Remember to follow, rate, and review the podcast if you like what you hear. SynopsisOn today's date in 1853, Giuseppe Verdi's opera Il Trovatore (or The Troubador) had its premiere performance at the Teatro Apollo in Rome.It proved an immediate hit. True, some did complain at the time about its gloomy, complicated and downright confusing plot. But Verdi's music setting had such great tunes and such energetic verve that Il Trovatore quickly became the most popular of all his operas in the 19th century. Its tunes were soon heard emanating from street corner barrel-organs, and, as a true sign of popularity, there were even comic parodies of its melodramatic blood and thunder storyline.Reviewing a New York production in 1862, American composer and music critic William Fry had these observations: “Il Trovatore has a wonderful plot, beyond human comprehension. ... As to the music, there are some charming, popular, ingenious, artistic, great points; then, there are some others egregiously vulgar and rowdy. The ‘Anvil Chorus,' for example, is about equal to a scene of mending a sewer set to music.”And as for parodies, in the 1935 film A Night at the Opera, Il Trovatore — and opera, in general — receives a devastating sendup at the hands of the Marx Brothers.Music Played in Today's ProgramGiuseppe Verdi (1813-1902) [arr. He told showgoers that he'd been in love with the same woman for 37 years. Then he dedicated his beloved classic “Guinnevere” to his wife, Jan. Mr. Crosby, who died on Thursday, once told me that love was his main preoccupation as a songwriter. The Best in Mystery, Romance and Historicals

Martin Walker is one of the most listened to shows on Binge Reading of all times, so we are delighted to have him back discussing his latest book, To Kill a Troubadour. It's number 15 in the Bruno Perigord police chief series, highly popular all over the place, particularly in Germany. When a musician's new song hits a political nerve, he finds himself in the crosshairs of Spanish Nationalists' ire, and it's up to Bruno to track down the extremists who seem to be ready to take deadly measures. Another delightful installment of the internationally acclaimed series featuring Bruno, Chief of Police. But now, here's Martin. Jenny Wheeler: Welcome back, Martin. It's so good to have you on the show again. Martin Walker: It's good to be back with you, Jenny. Jenny Wheeler: We're talking about To Kill a Troubador, which is number 15 in your Perigord Bruno the Police Chief series. I particularly loved this one because you have such an interesting mix of things going on in the story. It's a combination of the French provincial life that's so popular with your readers, but there is also that edge of both history and contemporary politics in it. We've got Russian cyber-attacks, we've got some of the French medieval history coming into it, and I wondered with the cyber-attack part of it in particular, we know from your earlier podcast interview with us that you have had a very illustrious career as a diplomatic correspondent for top newspapers. Did those diplomatic contacts and the people you met over that period of your life help with your research on the cyber-attack aspects of this book? Martin Walker: Yes, very much so. I have various old contacts who are with offices like GCHQ in Britain and the NSA in America. I even gave a lecture at the NSA at one point on international politics, and so I keep in touch with old chums. I try and keep in touch with my old friends in Moscow, some of whom have now left because of opposition to the war in Ukraine. But yes, most of my life I was in journalism, and you meet an awful lot of interesting characters around the world through journalism. The other thing is the old Fleet Street motto holds good – expert knowledge is just a phone call away. Jenny Wheeler: That's great. The rise of right wing extremism is an inherent part of this story, but also there is the medieval aspect with the Occitan culture being promoted by various interest groups. One of the key characters in that right wing extremism is this woman, Africa, who appears right through the story, a mysterious figure. We've had a little bit of a conversation off camera because the edition I read of your book didn't have an author acknowledgement section, and I was very curious as to whether Africa was a real person or entirely made up. We have just had a little chat about that off air and you've explained that she is definitely a real person. Tell us about her role in the story and also what she actually achieved in real life. Martin Walker: Well, there was a woman called África de las Heras who was a Spanish communist during the Spanish Civil War, born to quite a wealthy, prosperous family. At the end of the war when the Republican left wing side was defeated and Franco took over, she was steered back to Moscow by the NKVD figure there, which is the modern KGB, if you like. She became a full-time KGB official and had an extraordinary career. She was used by the Red Army in World War II to coordinate partisan activity around the Blue Division, which was the Spanish division of volunteers that Franco sent to the Eastern front to fight on the side of the Nazis. She had a distinguished career with that. She got several medals for it. She then went off to South America where she was the person who warned the Russians that the Bay of Pigs invasion was to be launched in 1961. She was told to marry the head of the KGB in South America, based in Argentina. He was a Yugoslav,

Short Story called A Diwali Tale by Barbara Pearman Diwali is a five day festival of lights and one of the major festivals celebrated by Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Sikhs. Barbara was one of our winners in Hi2020 new writer's opportunity to shine. Here are a few words from Barbara Is it really that long! A lot has happened since then. You may remember I sent you a chapter of a novel I was writing. Well lockdown provided me with the perfect opportunity to really get stuck in in a big way and in February this year my novel Once Upon A Time In Kazimierz was published by Troubador Publishing. It was an enormous amount of work (well not work actually as I loved every minute of it!) and the book is now on sale with Troubador and online at WHSmith, Foyles, Waterstones, Amazon and many others too numerous to mention. I was recently interviewed on Wycombe Sound Radio and I'm hoping to promote the book in Poland. It was inspired by a visit to Krakow a few years ago but the idea had lain fermenting on my bookshelf since then. Some of the short pieces I wrote with my writing class were the catalyst for the story in the end and gradually the characters and a theme were born out of not very much. In fact it was a copy of a restaurant menu that started it all.I must say that winning the short story competition's romance section was a real boost to my confidence and no doubt I wouldn't have attempted to write longer if it hadn't been for that. Barbara began her story-telling adventure four years ago when she joined a creative writing class. She is a practising artist with a degree in Fine Art Practice, but having become somewhat 'hooked' on the writing bug, swapped her brush for a pen and began to paint with words. After becoming a winner with Happy London Press she was enthused to write bigger and in February this year her first novel, Once Upon a Time in Kazimierz was published. Painting has taken a bit of a back seat but her artwork can be viewed on her colourful website at www.barbarapearmanart.co.uk Come and read our blog https://happylondonpress.blogspot.com/

Singer, Songwriter, Saxophonist, Bandleader…Curtis Stigers does it all. His new album, This Life will be released on February 25, 2022. “Keep Me From The Cold” was originally released on Curtis' sophomore album on Arista Records, where he was discovered and signed by legendary producer Clive Davis. It was co-written with Glen Ballard (Grammy-winning writer/producer) and Curtis has said that this is one of the songs that he's most proud of writing.       It's been 30 years since Curtis released his eponymous debut album which took the charts by storm and generated the international hits “I Wonder Why”, “You're All that Matters To Me”, and “Never Saw A Miracle”. For This Life a seasoned Curtis Stigers has revisited these early successes (and a couple of later ones) and put a distinct jazz spin on them. The repertoire includes a new version of Nick Lowe's “(What's So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love, And Understanding”, which Stigers had recorded in 1992 for the smash hit film soundtrack of The Bodyguard. And there is, of course, also a fresh rendition of “This Life”, the marvelous Emmy-nominated theme song Curtis co-wrote and recorded in 2008 for the wildly popular TV show Sons Of Anarchy.       Fans of Sons of Anarchy know him well and The Times of London enthuse "Stigers remains one of the most thoughtful and uncategorizable of artists. Armed with a characterful croon, a chiseled jaw and a saxophone..”       Over the course of his career Curtis's music has been praised by many including The New York Times, The Times of London, The Guardian, The San Francisco Chronicle, Jazz Times, MOJO, and so many more. THE LAST TROUBADOUR by Eugene Scruggs After years of wandering across Europe, playing the fool, singing and strumming the lute for bishops and princes, as well as in the bawdiest of country taverns, I, Charles Coypeau Dassoucy, the last of the roving troubadours, have returned to Paris, my beloved native city. My once golden locks have turned to silver. I have four less teeth. My keen eyes now require the aid of Florentine spectacles. But on the plus side, I return with fifty rousing drinking songs, a collection of verses, and what's best, five hundred shiny gold pistols, which I managed to spirit out of the clutches of that murderous Duke of Mantua and his henchmen. C. Eugene Scruggs is professor emeritus of French literature and history with a specialty in the seventeenth-century period. Over the years, he has introduced more than three hundred university-level students to the culture of that France by way of summer study-tours. In recognition of this, in 2002 Scruggs was named Chevalier de l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques by decree of the French prime minister. Scruggs has also received distinguished achievement awards from college and high school alma maters and is president emeritus of the Florida Consortium for International Education. He is the author of six books, treating such diverse topics as French culture, the American Civil War, and life in the rural South. Dr. Scruggs currently lives in Lakeland, Florida. https://www.amazon.com/Last-Troubadour-Eugene-Scruggs-ebook/dp/B08R7Y6498/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=9781648952722&qid=1609169022&sr=8-1 www.Stratton-Press.com http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/chgenescruggssp.mp3

On today’s date in 1853, Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Il Trovatore” (or “The Troubador”) had its premiere performance at the Teatro Apollo in Rome. It proved an immediate hit. True, some did complain at the time about its gloomy, complicated and downright confusing plot. But Verdi’s music setting had such great tunes and such energetic verve that “Il Trovatore” quickly became the most popular of all his operas in the 19th century. Its tunes were soon heard emanating from street corner barrel-organs, and, as a true sign of popularity, there were even comic parodies of its melodramatic blood and thunder story-line. Reviewing a New York production in 1862, the American composer and music critic William Fry had these observations: “Il Trovatore has a wonderful plot, beyond human comprehension... As to the music, there are some charming, popular, ingenious, artistic, great points; then, there are some others egregiously vulgar and rowdy. The Anvil Chorus, for example, is about equal to a scene of mending a sewer set to music.” And as for parodies, in the 1935 film, “A Night at the Opera,” “Il Trovatore” – and opera in general – receive a devastating send-up at the hands of the Marx Brothers.

Born and raised in south London, Michelle O Faith is a young vocalist, songwriter, and producer making Alt-Pop music. Classically trained, Michelle has a Bachelor's degree in Music. Aged 10, she was awarded a scholarship for tuition in Classical Voice. By age 18, she was a concert-level Opera singer. This technique seeps into Michelle's vocal delivery, making for a distinct and striking sound that has earned her comparison to Kate Bush and Lana Del Rey, alike. When reviewing her debut single, Paul Bridgewater, Editor at Line of Best Fit, deemed Michelle: “the singer-songwriter with the most interesting vocal style we've heard, so far, this year.” Her music has also received support and praise from CLASH, Hunger Magazine, Earmilk, Record of The Day, The 405, amongst others. Michelle's last project, the 2017 EP Birthday Blues, was funded by PRS Foundation through their prestigious Women Make Music Award. Michelle promoted the set with a series of electrifying live shows at some of London's most renowned independent music venues - including The Bedford, Troubador, Tooting Tram & Social, Hoxton Underbelly, Dublin Castle, and BIRTHDAYS, (a sold-out gig where she served as support for IAmDDB). Currently, Michelle is rolling out her most ambitious project to date - a trilogy of EP's titled Lagoon. The set is funded by MOBO's through their MOBO Help Musicians Award. Volume I of the trilogy was released in June 2020; and preceded by singles Bloomsbury Hotel, Speaking in Tongues, and Lemonade (Pt. II). Volume II of Lagoon is slated for release at end of Jan 2021. Its lead single Black Lolita was released on 18th September. Beth makes a living touring the nation playing music and making folks feel good.  Join us as she explains why she always plays barefoot and as I convince her that her music extends to international waters…    Buddy Beth Wood is also the first non-Central Oregon resident guest on the show.  However, she has become so integrated into some of Central Oregon’s premier events, playing the Sisters Folk Festival, hosting the Sunday Community Celebration and staffing the Americana Song Academy, that she is practically family and therefore kicks off our Friends of Central Oregon category.     Beth has been blessed with the gift of song and story and shares with us her path, her struggles and her triumphs.  She also shares how she “wrote her own story” as she broke the mold by also becoming an athlete.   Check out her music at www.bethwoodmusic.com or come see her in September when she returns to the Sisters Folk Festival (www.sistersfolkfestival.org)

Natalie Gelman was a street performing NYC troubadour who won over hearts across the country with her music, soulful voice and dynamic songwriting. She literally moved up from the subway to Carnegie Hall and many venues in between. And along the way she found herself in national publications like the NY Times and Billboard Magazine because of it. Often compared to Sheryl Crow, Joni Mitchell and Jewel, Natalie is an artist in her own right - called “Simply Terrific” by the NY Post and named the “poster girl for the solo, storytelling singer/songwriter” by Music Connection Magazine.  Best of all, she joins us on Music FridayLive! this Friday. Alex Nester brings back the art of real,  live un-moduilated music-making with hot blues that makes you shake and shimmy and cool vocals that do a slow burn in your ears. A  bout with cancer as a teen has helped shape her unique sound filled with messages of love, faith, positivity, and healing while channeling the retro soul artists of the 60’s and 70’s. Her resume already includes 12 albums, countless jingles, and over 25 theatrical productions, as well as working with established musicians such as Carlos Santana, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, The Fifth Dimension, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Desi Arnaz, Jr., Alphonse Mouzon, Brandon Fields, and Eric Marienthal.. Plays hard and late and she joins us Friday.

Rooftop Revolutionaries are a modern hard rock band from Los Angeles fronted by opera-trained rocker Eleanor Goldfield.  They have stood out in the Southern California underground rock scene by  expressing political and social views in their songs, blending a message with a heavy rock sound similar to that of Alice in Chains. Rooftop Revolutionaries have played Los Angeles venues such as The House of Blues Sunset Strip, The Roxy, Viper Room and the Troubador. They released their debut album this summer, Resolute, to rave reviews. Best of all Eleanor joins us Friday. In an industry saturated with fly-by-night singles, auto-tune pop, and packaged artist-development, Alex Nester brings back the art of music-making in a collection of original music chronicling her trials and letdowns with the state of music business today and her bout with cancer as a teenager. A life of trial and triumph has  shaped her unique sound filled with messages of love, faith, positivity, and healing while channeling the retro soul artists of the 60’s and 70’s. Her resume includes 12 albums, countless jingles, and over 25 theatrical productions, as well as working with established musicians such as Carlos Santana, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, The Fifth Dimension, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. We are so looking forward to talking with Alex this Friday at 2:30 pm ET.

This Monday ACCENT ON's host ILONA EUROPA interviewed an amazing singer CHRISTALEE. We listened to her beautiful voice and her two songs. We learned about her life, the ups and the downs. Christalee was born and raised in Southern California. As she grew older she became the soloist for different choirs and played the lead in many stage musicals such as .... The Wizard of Oz, Oklahoma, The Mikado, Fiddler on the Roof and The Boyfriend. By the time Christalee graduated from High School she was touring with her own band all over the country as well as Australia. At the age of 23, she recorded her first title song for the Disney film, "The Small One" along with Disney's, "Pacific High". She has also done numerous recording projects with Nashville producer, Bruce Irvine, over the years and toured with her Christian trio called "The 3 of Us", which she says meant the most to her. Since then, Christalee has headlined shows at Carlos and Charlie's, The Troubador and The Coconut Grove, in Hollywood, with special guest artists from The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, along with greats, such as Linda Hopkins and Mabel King, (The Wiz's mean Evilene). She has also had the honor of opening for the incredible Lou Rawls, Mabel King, Joan Rivers and Barry Manilow. Learn more about CHRISTALEE on her website: www.Christalee.com/vocalist. ACCENT ON! host ILONA EUROPA interviewed our next guest - STEVIE RAY. We put an Accent ON! a very important topic - HOMELESS PEOPLE. https://www.facebook.com/theeurbantrekkerproject Thee Urban Trekker Project is a homeless ministry started by Stevie Ray back in March of this year in Huntington Beach, California. While living on the streets himself, Stevie Ray is writing a survival guide for the homeless and the soon to be homeless. There is no book available anywhere like it! While writing his survival guide for the homeless, Stevie also counsels, administers and ministers to the homeless as well as raises awareness to the ever growing problem of homelessness working to change the perception many have of those living on the streets. Stevie's friend Michelle Mc Kinley Ansdell joined us in the studio supporting the cause. ILona Europa played her song "Easy come Easy go" now charting at #24 on iDanceRadio's TOP 100 tracks.
