Hear the eerie, arresting, co-composed electro-orchestral pop from Minneapolis electro band POLIÇA and Berlin new-music outfit stargaze, led by conductor André de Ridder. The two groups have worked together since the 2015-2016 season, in a “virtual residence,” commissioned by Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra's Liquid Music series. They have arranged and adapted Steve Reich's Music for Pieces of Wood as well as co-creating their latest, a long-form work inspired by ideas and themes in James Kunstler's book The Long Emergency. On their 2018 record Music For the Long Emergency, sweeps of strings, French horn, flute and oboe, along with synth bass, industrial electro-percussion, and jarring electronic textures are arrayed in support of often electronically-altered vocal lines. Hear some of this music, in-studio, which Poliça frontwoman Channy Leaneagh describes in National Sawdust Log as “not a pill to swallow that calms us down.” (From the Archives, 2018.) Poliça's Channy Leaneagh, Erika Dohi, Real Estate's Martin Courtney, Twin Shadow and Bessie Turner discuss the creative process during the pandemic, learning to not put too much pressure on themselves, and what dream concept album they would make if they had infinite time and resources Channy Leaneagh has played violin in folk-rock bands, played as part of 25-piece Minnesotan indie-rock group Gayngs, and collaborated with Bon Iver's Justin Vernon. In 2011 she founded the band Poliça, who fuse elements of RnB, experimental indie, dance music, and electronic sounds. Erika Dohi is a New York-based pianist originally from Osaka, Japan, with an eclectic musical background. She has worked on everything from traditional classical music to improvisation, and her debut album I, Castorpollux is as technical as it is emotional. Bessie Turner is a singer songwriter known for her stunning soulful voice, whose beautiful brand of alt-pop has received praise from DJs across Europe. Martin Courtney is from the indie-rock band Real Estate. The American singer and guitarist is known for his dreamy soundscapes and jangly guitar sounds that have dominated the genre during the last decade. Twin Shadow is a Dominican-American singer, songwriter and record producer whose energetic synth-pop sound takes inspiration from Dominican bachata and has achieved huge critical acclaim.

Poliça's previous album was written after frontwoman Channy Leaneagh almost gave up her career in music. That's until she fell off her roof trying to remove ice. Her doctor suggested she rewrite the story of her fall to make it seem less traumatic. The result was the album ‘When We Stay Alive.' It was released just weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic swept America. During the pandemic, Channy and the band worked day jobs to get by, but they kept making music together. They have just released a new record called ‘Madness'. On the album, Channy reflects on her pandemic day job working at a grocery store and reclaiming her sexuality after reflecting on her personal experiences with sexual abuse and assault.  Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Elly Jackson, also known as La Roux, is a bona fide alt-pop star and Grammy Award-winning singer, who is now back with her first album in five years, Supervision. Dana Gavanski is a folk singer-songwriter born in Vancouver, Canada, to a Serbian family. She’s a newcomer on the music scene, who has made waves with her debut album Yesterday Is Gone. And “protest singer” Elaha Soroor, from Afghanistan, born in Iran, found fame on the TV show Afghan Star – the Afghan equivalent of American Idol. She was forced to flee the country after singing songs critical of the Afghan culture and its oppression of women.

Leaneagh discusses the identities of her own character both before and after the event, the idea of mentally rewriting her own history as an act of coping, and using that same concept in all of our lives to process the larger cultural environment. In the eight-plus years Poliça has been a band, the synth-pop project has toured the world, released critically acclaimed albums that have been heard millions upon millions of times and further bolstered the already-sterling musical pedigree of their hometown of Minneapolis. Long before Poliça — an outfit Justin Vernon of Bon Iver once called "the best band [he's] ever heard" — was making incredible, innovative music and climbing the European charts, singer Channy Leaneagh was a young violinist who was agonizing over every mistake she made during recitals. Recently, before the band's headlining performance at Flannel Fest in Milwaukee (just her second show after recovering from a broken back she sustained last winter), Leaneagh invited My First Band host Tyler Maas to join her in a green room RV to discuss her unlikely path to fronting Poliça. After talking about the band's forthcoming full-length that's due out at the end of January, the singer talked about playing fiddle and singing in a bluegrass band while attending college in South Dakota, busking at farmer's markets in Minnesota, getting booked to play a birthday party and the circumstances that led to her winding up in Gayngs. Along the way, they talked about the camaraderie in the Minneapolis music scene, and Maas wondered why Poliça is so big in Belgium. My First Band is sponsored by Boulevard Brewing. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, and wherever else you get podcasts. Music used in this show comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Poliça ("Driving").

Live In Concert from NPR's All Songs Considered

Not many bands can boast two drummers and an uncluttered sound, but Polica made it work at NPR Music's SXSW day party, held Thursday at The Parish in Austin, Texas. At The Parish, the band toned down the heavily manipulated vocals of Channy Leaneagh — on the new Give You the Ghost, her voice slides lithely all over the place — to reveal her as a bold, even ferocious singer in her own right. Hear the band, recorded live from Austin on March 15, 2012.
