POPULARITY
21st century electro-futurism, Helsinki style. Sometime around a decade ago, electro started to surge onto dance floors again. A new generation of DJs, from Helena Hauff and DJ Stingray, brought the sci-fi, cyborg funk to new audiences, as a modern retool of the style began enjoying the ubiquity of its four-to-the-floor cousins. And few embody its future for our current decade like Sunny Seppä, AKA Sansibar. Cutting his teeth in Helsinki's underground with residencies at Kaiku and Post Bar, Seppä's sound draws from a broad range of influences far from the Finnish capital. His first releases channeled the high-definition Motor City school of electro, but he has since evolved. Not one to be confined by the narrow confines of any genre, the Finnish producer and DJ's discography has steadily begun to encompass a wider palette of influences, including releases with fellow new-gen electro artist Reptant. It's no wonder Seppä has found a home on Kalahari Oyster Cult. Sans Musique was released by Rey Colino's label, and both are united by a love for an amalgamation of gritty and ecstatic sounds of the '90s. As Colino put it himself, the Cult espouses "nostalgia with a modern sound design." You can hear that peppered throughout Seppä's RA Podcast. From Simulant's stone-cold classic "Wav.Form" to shades of tech house from the late '90s and early '00s (as well as some of his own unreleased material), the full vision of his broad sound world comes alive on RA.976. You won't technically hear too much electro in this mix—but underscoring many of the selections is the retro-futurism that electro elicits, that bleary-eyed optimism of dance music's halcyon era. @sunnysibar @sin-sistema-sin Find the interview and tracklist at ra.co/podcast/976

Bill Kouligas is the mind behind one of modern electronic music's greatest and most innovative labels, PAN. His remarkable ear for music meant that he released some of the earliest records from luminaries like Yves Tumor, Helena Hauff and Eartheater, helping to jumpstart several remarkable careers. And each PAN release is lovingly and lavishly packaged like an art object in itself, an approach you can read more about in this month's feature-length cover story. The Berlin artist's RA Podcast is an audio companion to that cover story, and it underlines not only Kouligas's range as a label A&R but also as a DJ. Reflecting the label's evolution from straight-up noise to musique concréte to leftfield dance music and then avant-pop, the mix cycles through stages of strange, staggered beats, almost celestial ambient music, passages of overwhelming noise and sound that sublimate into floating clouds before solidifying back into club music, and a couple engaging spoken word passages and endless manipulations of the human voice. In other words, it sounds a lot like PAN. @pan_hq Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/880

Anuraag is a second generation settler based on Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country. Their practice as a DJ is layered and improvisational, favouring hi-def, glossy textures, organic percussion and fluid polyrhythms, drawing connections between traditional and hypermodern instrumentation. It is an inimitable style that has led them to play for global institutions including RA, Bossa Nova, NTS, and Boiler Room, and support legendary artists including Helena Hauff, DJ Sprinkles, and u-Ziq. ""This mix is a live recording from a show at Sideway, a gorgeous little club situated on Ngunnawal/Ngambri Country. I played the middle slot between two DJs with a very different style to me, and each other. I wanted to bridge the gap between the two by matching the energy of the opening DJ then trying to disorient the crowd through a lot of tempo and groove switchups, so that when the closer began the 120ish stuff they planned to play would feel like a relief and draw the crowd together. I had a pretty challenging time playing - I've been very used to local crowds that I know and trust to stick with me through my constant shifts in direction. I had a bonkers week in the lead-up and only had about 30 minutes to prep in the club. But I was surprised how happy I was with the recording on listening back, and think it gives a fairly accurate slice of what I tend to play out lately in a functional, club, party context." pic by ohgeeiz

RXmode – Degraded (w1b0's Violation in G Minor) Bass Agenda Recordings began in 2013, with its debut release, the compilation entitled ‘The Fight Against the Mundane'. That CD and digital release featured many of the guests that had appeared on the Bass Agenda Radio show in its first year, such as w1b0, The Exaltics, Sync24, Scape One, The Hidden Persuader, and Alavux. Since 2013 the label has put out over 100 releases on digital, vinyl, CD, and USB formats spanning the various nuanced styles in the Electro genre, and Techno too. Just like the radio show, the focus of the Bass Agenda label is on exploring the wide range of sounds out there and doing so by releasing music by brand new talents, established artists doing new things, and some of the Electro genre's biggest names. The label has been championed since its inception by Dave Clarke and has grown over the years to become a regular source of tracks for home DJs, podcasters, magazines, and some the world's biggest names, including Juan Atkins, DJ Stingray, Helena Hauff, UMEK, Alienata, and many more. In 2020 Bass Agenda Recordings curated and released CAREBOT$, a massive 100+ tracks compilation raising money for NHS Charities Together and Médecins Sans Frontières Covid-19 initiatives. So far, the CAREBOT$ has raised over £10,000. After this project Andy Barton, who runs all things Bass Agenda, decided the label would take a break. The label will return, but no specific date or plans have been made as yet. The Bass Agenda Radio Show continues and broadcasts on www.deepspaceradio.com in Detroit. Guest on the show have included Anthony Rother, The Hacker, Juan Atkins, Detroit in Effect, Dez Williams, Jensen Interceptor, Helena Hauff, CYRK, DJ Godfather, Radioactive Man and over 150 more. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Follow Bass Agenda Recordings : Bandcamp : www.bassagendarecordings.bandcamp.com Facebook : www.facebook.com/BassAgendaRecordings Instagram : www.instagram.com/bassagenda SoundCloud : @bassagenda Triple Vision : www.triplevision.nl/label/Bass+Agenda+Recordings

Since the mid 90's, Vincent Koreman a.k.a. Drvg Cvltvre has been working on his own blend of dystopian acid, no wave and experimental house. Respected in the international underground for his groundbreaking work in experimental techno and electro as RA-X in the 90′s on labels like Bunker and KK Records, Koreman comes from a DIY punk background, opting for hard work and political stance rather than hollow pose. Drvg Cvltvre's music takes the speed down a notch to emphasis on the heaviness of sound and using the space left between the pounding kicks to build melancholic melodies that seem to grow out of thin air. A blend of dark techno and deep house with lots of experiment, influenced in equal parts by Suicide, Sun Ra and Terrence Dixon. His discography is a staggering collection of releases on labels like Warp, Permanent Vacation, Viewlexx, Pinkman, Omnidisc, the legendary Nervous Records and his own imprint New York Haunted, that has been gaining momentum as a bastion of cool, experimental house & techno in an increasingly stale and bland music scene. Drvg Cvltvre is a sought after live act and dj that has been playing everywhere from Shanghai to New York and from Sydney to Helsinki, leaving crowds in awe of his hardware live sets and stellar dj selections. Drvg Cvltvre's tracks are staples in several well known Djs sets. His cuts get played by Nina Kraviz, Speedy J, I-F, John Talabot, DJ Stingray, Juan Atkins, Jackmaster, Marcel Dettmann, Helena Hauff and many others. He's been featured and interviewed by Djmag, Mixmag, Resident Advisor and The Wire. -- 081: Drvg Cvltvre from Tilburg, Netherlands https://soundcloud.com/drvgcvltvre https://www.facebook.com/drvgcvltvreofficial

RUBEN RODRIGO brings us an unprecedented set, as he is, free and floating, the cabin being an extension of his body. Its adaptation to SYNTAX brings works by Pronoise, Fleck ESC, Helena Hauff, Filmmaker, Sound Synthesis or UHF, and labels such as Frigio, Radio Mars, Noise To Meet You, Nebulae or HC Records. He went on Hiatus and returned to DJin in 2014 plays mostly hard, dark sound - often paired with carrying, sometimes epic melodies that send the guests on a journey. Today you'll catch him playing at venues like Tresor, Griessmuehle, Kitkat Club, Suicide Circus and others in Berlin, Tanzhaus West and Nachtleben in Frankfurt as well as Villa Nachttanz and halle02 in Heidelberg. Always true to the underground as a DJ, and as a raver, he founded the event series "Schwarz" in Mannheim's "Disco Zwei", where Headless Horseman and Helena Hauff have been guests so far. Click here for the feeder sound II OPEN CALL voting poll, available between 12th of May – 12th of June: www.feeder.ro/2020/05/09/vote-feeder-sound-open-call/ WINNERS announcement - 15th of June --- Lexia Majora - An Exploration of Self-Kindness Set description: This mix is an exploration of boundaries and overlaps between genres, between mainstream and underground, feelings of comfort, novelty and change. It's something I created in a time which is challenging an and it curates moods, rhythms or speeds that I encounter in daily life in lockdown mode. I also see my mixing as an act of political statement making, resistance and performance of discourses which I find important, problematic or influential in meaningful ways to me and to society in general. At the same time, I see mixing as an encouragement to be more in touch with myself, with my instinct and in the same way, I hope to inspire those who listen to this to do the same. About Lexia Majora Artist biography: I am techno DJ based in Exeter. I am resident and manager of Sister Sounds (https://www.facebook.com/sistersoundscollective/), an all-womxn collective for DJs in Exeter. I have played sets for Sister Sounds events featuring Sherelle, Breakwave and Mor Elian, and Room 303 nights showcasing UMFANG and Afrodeutsche, supporting the local musical community consistently. I have played guest mixes on Noods Radio and Love Summer Radio and plan to contribute more. I am also a PhD researcher doing an anthropological study of ro-minimal and the ways in which this genre is important to identity and community building. I am also a poet and spoken word artist.
Australia’s foremost purveyor of weaponized electro, Jensen Interceptor. One of the brightest lights on the booming electro scene that’s seen a renaissance in the recent years, he first piqued the interest of DJs from Helena Hauff to Maceo Plex through releases on Boysnoize Records, Motorik! and Sheffield’s Central Processing Unit in recent years with his devastating brand of floor-focused electro, which ranged from mechanical electro-funk to mutant ghettotech. 2018 has since been a particularly prolific year for him as a producer. Real name Mikey Melas, he’s dropped no less than seven EPs, on labels including E-Beamz, Cultivated Electronics and Power Station, with productions built on a maturing of his distinctive sound. The end of the year also sees Melas put out his debut album on Maceo Plex’s Lone Romantic. Featuring collaborations with DeFekT, The Hacker and long-term collaborator Assembler Code, the ten-track LP is an ode to his mum, titled ‘Mother’. Read the full feature on djmag.com

The quirky sounds of their previous two releases – Zabawa Trwa and Trans i Bas – have garnered support from music lovers and heavyweight selectors alike (with Helena Hauff, Veronica Vasicka and Marco Passarani among them). The duo continue to weave their sonic story upping the tempo on the breakbeat-driven roller Kiepska Forma. The track comes with a more contained techno mix as well, entitled Forma Świetna. The b-side carries Jakże Srogo – a firm crowd favorite from the Seltron live show, and a nod of sorts to the sound and times of electroclash, even though we won't argue that the tune is anything but pure Seltron 400. Pre-order the limited vinyl - https://bassagendarecordings.bandcamp.com/album/degraded-the-transhumanism-remixes Fans of Electro's big hitter DJs such as Helena Hauff, Dave Clarke, UMEK, Maceo Plex, Alienata, and UMWELT won't have escaped the sonic assaults of Dutch artist RXmode and his fellow Transhumanism collective members; w1b0, Slaves of Sinus, and TFHats. RXmode's 2017 EP 'Cerberus' was very much the EP he'd been building up to since his debut on Bass Agenda Recordings back in 2015; dark, sinister, heavy, and distinctive. One of the tracks from that EP, 'Degraded', gets the remix treatment from the other Transhumanism members on this, the third vinyl release the collective has put out. The original track kicks things off in style before the three very individual remixes take things to new territories. TFHats takes the track, remoulds it and adds his own lyrics and vocals to great effect. W1b0 brings what will certainly be looked back on as one of the heaviest tracks of 2018; his 'Violation in G Minor' mix is a brutal sonic assault with a bassline that will surely wake the dead. Last and by no means least Slaves of Sinus brings an abstract acid tinged version; laced with his own brand of sinister vibes and darkness. Review by Thomas H. Happy Birthday, Track17. INTERVIEW > inverted-audio.com/mix/december With a new EP just out via Helena Hauff's Return To Disorder, we caught up with French producer @tomasmore to discuss his roots in electronic music production, first loves, favourite hang-out spots in Paris and studio modus operandi.
Over the last ten years Huntleys & Palmers has developed a level of consistency which is difficult to contest. The record label, run by Andrew Thomson, has been responsible for excursions by some of the most influential forces in dance and electronic music in the present. Helena Hauff, Sophie, Hi & Saberhagen and Mehmet Aslan all owe a due of gratitude in some capacity to Andrew as a tastemaker and a believer. The label has acted as an incubator for up and coming talent and has remained a powerful foce amidst the community. As a disc jockey Andrew has been lucky to ride prominently upon the coat-tails of the label and is widely travelled. Appearances across Europe and beyond have allowed him to develop an innovative presence behind the wheels of steel with each mix forming a deeply singular path from which came before. A dj's, dj if you will.

We discover some spectacular music this week, starting with Oregon duo Sea Moss, who bring what we might term industrial funk to this week's podcast. We're not great with genre descriptions clearly, which is just as well because our selection is from across the spectrum. We have new music from Caribou's Daphni, Lithuanian producer Brokenchord, Helena Hauff, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, The Breeders and more. Tracklisting Sea Moss - Diurnal Enuresis (Crash Symbols, USA) Daphni - Face to Face
Originating from Hong Kong Mr. Ho has amassed a serious reputation as a selector and label boss through his imprint Klasse Wrecks alongside Luca Lozano. The label has carved a niche for itself through it's visual identity associated with early rave culture and nostalgic days spent dancing. However, the releases themselves have been strong and singular in their sound. Dj Fett Burger, Cardopusher, Helena Hauff, Marco Bernardi, Dj Normal 4 and many others have all released records with the label which was only formed in 2015. Fast paced and assertive Klasse Wrecks is hot property. Mr. Ho is sought after as a disc jockey, his sets tastefully curated and diverse in style. We are delighted to have him contribute to our Ransom Note mix series...

We are happy to share with you this exclusive podcast by LOR. ‘LOR will be DJing at Corsica Studios in London on Saturday 25th March' so if you're around be sure not to miss this one! LOR brings together elements of techno, electronica and house to create his individual sound. The Belfast producer announced his arrival at the start of 2016 with remixes of classics by Arthur Russell and Kraftwerk, which were supported by the likes of Âme, Gerd Janson, Bicep, John Talabot and many more. Roman Flügel featured LOR in his last Boiler Room set and LOR tracks were featured in BBC Radio 1 Essential Mixes from both Roman Flugel and Dixon & Âme, raising yet more interest in an artist Data Transmission named ‘one of 2016's ones to watch'. LOR turned heads with his original productions, releasing on respected labels, NVH, Cin Cin (Fort Romeau and Ali Tillett's influential imprint) and Berlin's, Exit Strategy. Key support for his new material came from Dixon, Âme, Mano Le Tough, Roman Flügel, Eagles & Butterflies and Helena Hauff to name a few. His first official remix, of Sau Poler's ‘Esperits' was released on leading Dutch label, Atomnation and was Joris Voorn's opening track at ADE. 2017 has continued where 2016 left off, with LOR's ‘Versions II' release, his reworks of two classic Larry Heard tracks, winning heavy support from Âme, Roman Flügel, Ian Pooley, Marcus Worgull, Sandrino, Eagles & Butterflies, Fort Romeau and more. His rework of ‘Guidance' was also included by Adriatique in their BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix. As a DJ, LOR is rapidly on the rise, moving from Belfast Underground Radio, to various festivals last summer including AVA in Belfast, Celtronic in Derry and Tramlines in Sheffield, supporting Skream. 2017 has seen demand rise again, with international dates confirmed as well as London's respoected venue, Corsica Studios. His exclusive DJ mixes have been featured in such influential outlets as Data Transmission, When We Dip, Muting The Noise and DJ Mag. With more new tracks signed and remixes underway for 2017, LOR continues to gain serious momentum as a new artist to watch. https://soundcloud.com/LOR_belfast www.facebook.com/LOR.Belfast www.twitter.com/LOR_Belfast
It is with great pleasure that we present to you our 100th podcast. Over the course of the series we like to think we have mixed up big names with the stars of tomorrow; have shined a light on lesser known DJs who deserve the limelight and given pride of place to people with their own distinctive sounds. One such artist is Helena Hauff, the DJ turned producer who cut her teeth at the legendary Golden Pudel in Hamburg. Though she is a DJ first and foremost, her recorded material on labels like Werk Discs and Handmade Birds has never been less than arresting thanks to its dystopian blend of electro and techno moods and grooves. This mix she has done for us is just the same: it is ninety minutes of elastic electro, popping techno and slithering electronics that are shiny and metallic, crisp and futuristic. It will push and pull you in many different directions but is all tied together by an infectious sense of slick robo-funk. Right up there with electro greats like Drexcyia and I-F, Helena Hauff is a suitably singular artist to helm this landmark podcast.
On this episode of the Ninja Tune podcast we invited Helena Hauff and Illum Sphere along to have a chat with each other and play a few pieces of music. We would like to think we have served up plenty of special treats in our podcast series so far, but this latest one is certainly one that many people will get very excited about. It is not often that Detroit key-figures step out and offer us a window into their current musical world, but that is what we have here from Sherard Ingram aka DJ Stingray. Famed for many reasons—not least for always DJing in a black balaclava—he is founder of the Urban Tribe super group with KDJ, C2 and Shake, was DJ for the legendary electro outfit Drexcyia and is also a fierce DJ and producer in his own right. He came up playing tough techno and electro in hardcore motorcycle clubs in the D, but is now a regular in the world’s finest underground spaces, where he pushes a dark, intense sound that is socially and politically charged. Shades of Miami bass and ghetto tech also characterise his work on labels like Shipwreck, Bleep43, [NakedLunch] and Unknown to the Unknown, and in 2016 he is as busy and prolific as he has ever been. This summer he plays a rather exclusive back to back set with Helena Hauff at our festival in Amsterdam. The mix he serves up is a great snapshot of what Stingray does - forces you to dance to his high tempo, high impact sounds. He mixes them quickly and slickly and there is a real sense of urban paranoia and future menace in every tune he reaches for. Sit back, then, and bask in the glory of a real master.
Acid and electro from the docks of Hamburg.
