Lindbergh undertook one of the most remarkable flights in history. John Grierson takes us through every step of the epic flight which led Lindbergh to become the first man to fly the Atlantic single-handed. Grierson, an old friend of Lindbergh's, also paints a portrait of the man, both before and after his epic flight, exploring his reluctance for the USA to enter the war, his polar flights and his interest in wildlife conservation. The recording includes a second tribute to Lindbergh, this time from Sir Peter Masefield, who argues that Lindbergh's achievement was a turning point for aviation. John Grierson gave the Inaugural Lindbergh Memorial Lecture on 21 May 1975. The recording was digitised thanks to a grant from the RAeS Foundation and the podcast was edited by Eur Ing Mike Stanberry FRAeS.

Synopsis It was on this day in 1929 that the first performance was given of a radio cantata – not on the radio, oddly enough, but in a concert hall in Baden-Baden, Germany. It was entitled “Lindbergh's Flight,” with a text by Bertolt Brecht, and music by both Kurt Weill AND Paul Hindemith. This cantata was intended for a later radio broadcast and meant to illustrate both the literal and philosophical aspects of Charles A. Lindbergh's first-ever solo flight across the Atlantic two years earlier in 1927. Today, when planes whiz back and forth across the Atlantic every day, carrying hundreds of thousands of passengers, we have to remember that in 1927, the number of people flying to Europe nonstop was just ONE, namely Lindbergh, and the feat made headline news around the world. Three decades after Lindbergh's flight, composer Franz Waxman would write the film score for “The Spirit of St. Louis,” a 1957 Hollywood version of the Atlantic crossing starring Jimmy Stewart. And speaking of Atlantic crossings, Waxman, Weill and Hindemith – all German-born composers – would emigrate to the U.S. in the 1930s, their flight a result of the racial laws and artistic repression that followed the rise of Nazi ideology in Europe. Music Played in Today's Program Kurt Weill (1900-1950) – Lindbergh's Flight (Cologne Radio Orchestra; Hermann Scherchen, cond.) "In an astonishing feat of narrative invention, our most ambitious novelist imagines an alternate version of American history. In 1940 Charles A. Lindbergh, heroic aviator and rabid isolationist, is elected President. Shortly thereafter, he negotiates a cordial "understanding" with Adolf Hitler, while the new government embarks on a program of folksy anti-Semitism.For one boy growing up in Newark, Lindbergh's election is the first in a series of ruptures that threatens to destroy his small, safe corner of America - and with it, his mother, his father, and his older brother."

Synopsis The name Charles A. Lindbergh will forever be associated with two dramatic events: the first, Lindbergh's historic nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic in the airplane named “The Spirit of St. Louis”; the second, the kidnapping and murder of Lindbergh's infant son. On today's date in the year 2002, marking the centennial of Lindbergh's birth and the 75th anniversary of Lindbergh's Atlantic crossing, the Opera Theatre of St. Louis premiered a new opera entitled “Loss of Eden,” a musical reflection on Lindbergh's public triumph and personal tragedy. The opera's composer, Cary John Franklin, reworked themes from his opera into a chamber piece for oboe and guitar, entitled “Falls Flyer.” The title refers to both Lindbergh, who was born in Little Falls, Minnesota, and to the line of speedboats marketed under that name from the 1930s to the 1950s, whose sleek lines were modeled after the open cockpit of Lindbergh's first plane. Franklin wrote, “‘Falls Flyer,' is derived from music that accompanies the major dramatic moments of the opera – the plane departing for Paris, the kidnapping, and the execution of the man convicted of the crime. The more lyrical sections suggest the serenity and solitude found floating through clouds – or drifting on the water.” Music Played in Today's Program Cary John Franklin (b. 1956): Falls Flyer (Klemp-Kachian Duo) Schubert Club/Ten Thousand Lakes 115

“Through discipline comes freedom.” (Aristotle) Today’s title is not about simply doing your homework early so that you have the freedom to play video games. Or obeying traffic laws so that you can continue to enjoy the freedom of the roads. It is about weaving discipline and obedience into the fabric of your life--living a life of freedom. Not just at certain times when pressed. Duc’s (“Duke”), my large, 9-year-old Standard Poodle has earned countless hours of leashless freedom on the mountainous trails adjacent to our home because of his obedience. He learned to come and stand by me regardless of the distraction; horses, runners, cyclists--or even other dogs. Along with his knowing not to get out of my sight. These disciplines have earned him the joyful freedom of being in the hills, chasing butterflies and deer, running this way and that for the sheer sake of running--joyfully leashless. I feel for the other dogs and and their humans as they both wrestle with leashes out there. Both obedience and discipline can be--should be--lifelong decisions. Not moment-to-moment choices that we have to sweat out repeatedly. Charles A. Lindbergh, of first solo air crossing of the Atlantic fame, had no money and no prospects when he made the decision to be the first. The power of his decision saw him through seemingly impossible odds. My stepmother’s Mother, “Auntoy” was my oasis of sanity, love and encouragement when I was first growing up. One of her quotes, “A coward dies a thousand deaths, a hero dies but once” stays with my today. Obedience and discipline are two sides of the same coin, using many of the same mental muscles. Obedience does not mean being obsequious or being a today. Freedom is neither anarchy not simply rebellion; both are traps which are the opposite of freedom. And discipline does not mean, say, doing 150 sit-ups  each day just to be disciplined. We all know where we need to be obedient and where we need to be disciplined. And those areas are likely different for each of us. And while freedom may be defined differently for all of us, it will feel much the same; glorious and satisfying. Let’s help each other to lead comfortable, sure and steady, lives of discipline and obedience. Please do contact me. Respond in my Revolution 2.0 blog, email me at will@revolution2-0.org.
