    Ending Gun Violence: Punish The Criminals

    With the current emphasis being on it is all about the guns, this episode will add a strong pitch for tough gun crime penalties. That is the subject of today's short-form episode. It is always dangerous and wrong to ascribe responsibility 100% to any person or group; there is always shared responsibility. It is as true in ending gun violence as it is anywhere else. “It is all about the guns,” is just as wrong as, “It is all about the criminals. With the current emphasis being on it is all about the guns, this episode will add a strong pitch for tough gun crime penalties. The announced purpose of various levels of proposed additional gun control laws is to reduce gun crime. The ten of thousands of gun laws on the books are obviously not doing much to reduce gun crime, which is why we need more. And the proposed and recently enacted laws will also accomplish little. Here is a different approach: enact and enforce tough gun use laws.     The Candy Bomber Lives: Is It You?

    Post WWII in Berlin, Russia engaged in one of its many and continuing attempts to expand its land, power and influence by harming millions of others. The US responded with the heroic and surprisingly successful Berlin Airlift, saving Berlin from the vengeful grip of Joseph Stalin. At the same time, then US Army pilot https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gail_Halvorsen (Gary Halvorsen) became famnous for being the Candy Comber, delighting and encouraging the children, their parents and all of Berlin by “bombing” the hungry, deprived children of Berlin with tons of candy. This sequence of events had started with the Allied bombing of Berlin during the war, moved to the Soviet post war aggression, then onto the Airlift, next to the Candy Bombing, to, eventually, freedom for all Germans. Each step played a critical part. Recently the legend of the Candy Bomber was honored when a modern group brought in critical supplies to beleaguered Ukraine in the name of the Candy Bomber. Today, each of us, in our own way, can be a Candy Bomber, bringing delight and hope to anyone or any group in our lives. What is your way?     Enough Is Enough! Now For The Specifics About More Gun Laws

    "Enough is Enough" is an empty phrase, right up there with “Do Something!” We need implementable specifics, or it is all just posturing. That is the subject of today's short-form episode. An empty phrase, right up there with “Do Something!” Unless the people and groups shouting these sentiments are willing to: 1. Detail exactly what changes need to be made. 2. Work through how they would be implemented. 3. Outline how these changes would create the desired results. 4. Accurately define terms like assault weapons and be clear about what you want to ban or further restrict. 5. Stop using phrases like “We need gun control,” implying that we do not already have tens of thousands of laws on the books. And stop the accusatory, self-righteous cliche wars like, “Republicans want to save fetuses and kill children,” and, “Democrats are fascists who want to take your guns and  control your speech.” 6. Stop making “need” an argument against gun ownership.     Abortion Kills Humans: Is That Okay?

    The two critical questions in the abortion debate are: 1. When does human life begin? and 2. When is it permissible for the state to sanction the taking of that human life? My answer to question 1. At the time of conception. Regarding question 2. The state, government, sanctions, even encourages, the taking of life in wars, law enforcement and self defense. Some states allow for capital punishment. Is it okay for the state to sanction the taking of a human life to protect the life of the mother, when the conception results from rape, when the child is likely to grow up disadvantaged, or merely for convenience? I believe that many, and perhaps most, of those who support abortion know that all, or at least some, of those aborted are indeed human and duck the human issue question because they do not want to admit, out loud or to themselves, that at least is some cases they support abortion for convenience. Our feelings are a part of us that we feel cannot be challenged. “It feels cold outside,” and “This is how you make me feel,” are statements of absolute truth that we want others to respect, not challenge as either false or ill conceived. When our feelings are challenged or denied, we tend to double down in our own defense, and become further wedded to those feelings while rejecting both the feelings and reasoning of those contesting our feelings. And then rejecting them as well. That is why feelings based political thinking will forever preserve and deepen the disastrous divide here in our America. We need the opposite. Facts and logic can and often should be challenged, tested and revised. Divides narrow and can disappear this way. Both opinion- and agenda-driven politics are in exactly the same league as feelings-based politics. Only politics–any important thought for that matter–based on facts and logic is separate and better. Far better. That does not mean that you have to be a greasy grinder about your thinking. Just rational, thoughtful and open to better facts and logic. BTW, “greasy grinder” is a term that I heard in my freshman slide rule class. My teacher described himself as dedicated to his craft; immersed in his professions–a greasy grinder. Challenge our feelings, and things can easily fall apart. Challenge facts and logic, and things might get better. When our politics are feelings based, nothing will get better, and can only get worse. Challenge facts and logic, and things might very well get better. One of the core issues we deal with in everything from politics to finances to law enforcement is the substitution of feelings and opinion for facts and logic. This is the lazy approach, requiring little or no research, and no logic. Just state your position, and hold forth. And you never have to say things like, “You were right. I have changed my mind.” This lazy approach delivers terrible results. Describing the feelings based approach reminds me of the times, perhaps the many times, in high school when I had not done my homework, and still wanted to be given credit for participating in class. I did not know what I was talking about because I had not done the reading or the work, but I leapt in anyway. Full of passion–and feelings. But no facts. I was lazy–and loud. The students who had done the work knew I was full of it. The ones who had not might very well have thought I was onto something. Sound familiar? If we want better results, we need to be responsible citizens and careful voters. It is on us, not them. It is never on “them.” It is not us v. them, and it is not them v them. It's us. I am recruiting you into the ranks of citizens and voters who are careful to apply facts and logic before forming opinions, and, further, to be open to changing those opinions when new information is available. Continuing. Russia is governed by paranoid, autocratic rulers. It has been invaded three times, twice by the Germans, and once by France under Napoleon. Napoleon captured Moscow before retreating, and Germany under Hitler came within spitting distance. Partly as a consequence, Russia is hungry for huge amounts of “buffer” countries on its borders to help protect it. Russia has long been a bold, cruel aggressor notably in the last 90 or so years. 1. In 1932/3, Russia under Stalin induced a famine in Ukraine, killing upwards of 3M people. Stalin then replaced the dead population with Russians, helping to create today's minority Russian-leaning population in eastern Ukraine. 2. In 1939, Russia invaded Finland with 21 divisions totalling 450,000 men. 3. Also in 1939, Russia under Stalin sided with Hitler and Nazi Germany by signing the Molotov–Ribbentrop non-aggression pact, allying the two dictatorships. 4. In 1948, Russia under Stalin attempted to https://revolution2-0.org/kyiv-kiev-we-need-candy-bombers-not-city-bombers-will-you-volunteer-ep-390/ (starve and freeze out divided Berlin) in an attempt to have the entire city for himself. 5. More well known is the failed 1979 Russian invasion of Afghanistan. The US supplied the Afghans with the highly effective Stinger missiles, essentially creating a No-Fly zone over Afghanistan. 6. In 2008, Russia used force to occupy the 20% of the country of Georgia it declared to be leaning to Russia. Sound familiar? 7. Russia has twice attacked Chechnya, attempting to topple its anti-Russian government. In 1999, then-Prime Minister Vladimir Putin led the military response against Chechnya. https://www.history.com/topics/vladimir-putin (Putin), Boris Yeltsin's handpicked successor as President, said of the Chechen defenders, “We will rub them out, even in the toilet.” Again, does anything sound familiar? 8. In 2014, Russia invaded and annexed Crimea, then a part of Ukraine. And now Ukraine itself. What country is next? Does anyone believe that almost a century of Russian aggression will end with Ukraine? Does anyone believe any dictator when he says that he is finally satisfied, and does not want to gobble up more territory, power and people?  In 1938, British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, believed Hitler when the Nazi leader signed the Munich Agreement saying that he would finally be finished with his many territory grabs if he could just have Czechoslovakia. Even as Chamberlain was triumphantly waving the paper signed by “Herr Hitler,” claiming that, “We will have peace in our time,” Winston Churchill responded with, “He (Chamberlain), had a choice between war and dishonor. He chose dishonor.” Hitler attacked Poland in 1939, breaking the agreement and starting WWII. Churchill became Prime Minister the next year. Sanctions might be hurting Russia, but they are not stopping the invasion and the killing. We must do more now to help Ukraine, Eastern Europe, NATO, and ourselves. It's past time for a No-Fly Zone over Ukraine. In the mid-seventies, Fram oil filters became well-known due an ad campaign that featured the slogan, “You can pay me now, or pay me later.” The mechanic in the ad offered the viewer a simple proposition: Pay me now...

    KYIV (Kiev): We Need Candy Bombers, Not City Bombers: Will You Volunteer? (EP. 390)

    As Russian bombs rain down on Kyiv and other cities in Ukraine in Putin's effort to expand his rule, let's remember when another Russian President, Joseph Stalin, tried to freeze and starve out most of divided Berlin in 1948 in his attempt at expanding his rule. Perhaps more importantly, let's remember https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gail_Halvorsen (Gail Halvorsen), the justifiably famed “Candy Bomber,” an Air Force pilot who gave joy to the kids of Berlin, and hope to the adults, by parachuting–parachuting candy in enormous quantities to the children of bombed out post WWII Berlin. Children who had little or nothing, and were simply hoping to survive. Stalin failed in his effort. Let's work and pray that Putin also fails. And work and pray that future bombs are like candy, not explosives–nuclear or otherwise. And work to be one of the candy bombers. This was one of the major–and cruel–Russian moves in the First Cold War. Putin's invasion of Ukraine is the major–and  cruel–Russian moves in the Second Cold War. I hope and pray that it stays cold. Then Lieutenant Gail Halvorsen made history by being part of the heroic https://www.history.com/topics/cold-war/berlin-airlift (Berlin Airlift), a seemingly hopeless response to Stalin's attempt to steal Berlin from his Allied partners. The Allies, primarily the US under President Truman, made the decision to fly in everything the citizens of blockaded Berlin needed to survive: Coal, food, clothing, medicine–everything. A flight every 30 seconds for 18 months, totalling 300,000 flights in all. In cold, drafty propeller driven planes which were forced to fly in a narrowly defined air corridor. During a record cold winter. After a year and a half and against all odds, flying in 23 million tons of critically needed supplies, the Berlin Airlift succeeded, and Stalin was forced to lift his blockade. At the same time, C-54 Skymaster pilot Halvorsen made a different type of history by also becoming the Candy Bomber, giving joy, laughter and reasons to celebrate just being alive to tens of thousands of kids in devastated Berlin. And hope to all of Berlin. Halvorsen and the other pilots he recruited dropped candy from tiny, handmade handkerchief parachutes from their Airlift planes. We can all do the same in our own way today. Halvorsen noticed a need, and found a way to meet it. We can all–and should–do the same in our lives. His first encounter with the children came when he noticed a group of them standing behind the wire fence blocking entry to Tempelhof Airfield. When he approached them, he was disheartened to find that he had only two sticks of gum in his pocket; breaking each of them in two, he handed out four half sticks. The kids who got gum, handed the empty wrappers to other kids, who sniffed and licked the wrappers to get as much flavor as they could. “They came right up to me, speaking in English. Those kids were giving me a lecture, telling me, ‘Don't give up on us. If we lose our freedom, we'll never get it back.' American style freedom was

    Ukraine: Biden and Chamberlain, Churchill and ? (EP. 389)

    In our time together today, our “Take Ten” with Will Luden, we will compare Putin and Hitler, Biden and Chamberlain–and look for today's Churchill. I normally resist parallels to WWII Germany, but there are too many now to ignore. Russia is following Nazi Germany's path to expanding its territory, using the same lame excuses backed by significant military strength. In September of 1939, when Germany invaded Poland, France and Britain declared war on Germany. In May of 1940, Britain made Winston Churchil l its Prime Minister. Resisting the powerful appeasers in his own cabinet, Churchill rallied his nation to stand up to Hitler. Eventually, even strongly isolationist America was drawn into the war only by the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor in December, 1941. Had Britain either negotiated or surrendered, Germany would likely have won WWII.  And where do you think we’d be today? We need our own Winston Churchill, or we will lose, and lose big. Where is he? Go back with me to the point in history when Adolph Hitler started adding tens of millions of people and entire countries to Nazi Germany without firing a shot. Under the guise of uniting all German speaking peoples, Hitler added the Rhineland, Austria, and the Sudentland, the German speaking part of Czechoslovakia. Putin is adding parts of Ukraine under the guise of uniting all Russia loving people. 2. Hitler exclaimed long and loudly about how Germany needed to build military strength and increase its size and international prestige to assuage the undeserved embarrassment and humiliation of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Versailles (Treaty of Versailles). Putin is being equally loud and devious when he claims that Russia needs to avenge the underserved embarrassment of the breakup of the Soviet Union. 3. Just as Hitler invaded Poland after creating a false flag attack, Putin created an excuse to invade the rest of Ukraine, the vast bulk of that country's territory and population. 4. Prediction. When Germany invaded Poland, both Britain and France had had enough, and declared war. No country will find the courage to find a response that will drive Putin out of sovereign Ukraine. There is no Churchill to swim against the tide and stand against Putin. Sanctions will not deter Putin any more than the Treaty of Versailles post WWI, the ultimate in sanctions, kept Germany from rearming. Biden will be the modern version of Neville Chamberlain, the British Prime Minister who hande4d over Czechoslovakia to ol' Adoplh, believing Hitler's lie that Chamberlain could trade Czechoslovakia for peace. No other country has the strength to stand up to Russia, even if they could summon the courage to try. If anything is to change, we the voters in the US must force that change. We must take on that responsibility. We, the US, have the required military strength and other resources to take on Putin and his territorial and power and influence ambitions. We lack the desperately needed leadership.  And without America leading, the world lacks leadership on any issue of this magnitude. We need leaders who can see clearly what is unfolding, have the political courage to speak out, even if that means going against popular opinion, and, finally, summon the courage to act when danger looms.  From

    Trucker Protest: Does Might Make Right? (EP. 388)

The trucker protest in Ottawa crippled the capital city of Canada for over two weeks, and shut down the https://www.ambassadorbridge.com/ (Ambassador Bridge) that carries 30% of the annual trade between the US and Canada.  A 2004 Border Transportation Partnership study showed that 150,000 jobs in the Detroit–Windsor region and $13 billion in annual production depend on the Detroit–Windsor international border crossing. Many of the same people and groups who enthusiastically support the trucker protest get self-righteously irate and want to shut down other protests when they block an intersection for an hour or two. And these people and groups want to export the trucker protest to other cities and other countries. Now for more about separating the causes from the tactics: Truckers and others have every right to protest, but they have no right to cripple cities and major thoroughfares. We can either approve of or criticize the anti-mandate cause for the protests, but we cannot approve of the tactics.  Civil Rights protesters, including those supporting BLM and wanting change post the George Floyd murder, have every right to protest, but they have no right to block streets, burn and loot businesses, and invade police stations. Once again, we can debate the worthiness of the causes, but we cannot approve of the tactics. 3. Supporters of a failed presidential candidate have every right to protest, but they have no right to invade our nation's capitol. Debate their stolen election promise if you will, but do not support the tactic of invading the capitol. The intentional mistake that I see in all three areas, truckers, civil rights, Jan 6th, is that people who are in support of the cause focus on the cause, and gloss over the tactics. Phrases like, “Mostly peaceful,” and “Peaceful protest supporting democracy,” come to mind. People who are against the cause, focus on the worst of the tactics, and gloss over the cause. Phrases like, “Another night of violence, burning and looting,” and, “January 6th was the worst and most dangerous event in America since the Civil War,” come to mind. Separate the causes from the tactics, the fly poop from the pepper. Stop making people and events either all good or all bad. Either all black, or all white....

This raging ignorance has taken the form of warring cliches substituting for knowledge and reasoning. This, not the alleged election fraud from both sides, is indeed a threat to our democracy. Let's start with an example that is much in the news: CRT–Critical Race Theory. One side claims that if you don't teach CRT that you are distorting history. The other side says that if you do teach CRT, that you are distorting history. But very few on either side have sufficient knowledge of history to even begin having an intelligent discussion. Even fewer take the time to put the facts, should they have any, into a useful, coherent argument. Along with the 1619 Project, CRT loudly and often makes the claim that race and oppression, with whites being the oppressors and POCs being the oppressed, was a desired goal of the Founders, and played a vital part in the creation of wealth and power in America, and is still with us, preserved in our culture, legal, political and business systems, and that America must be torn down and radically reconstructed if we are to be rid of scourge of racism and oppression. Daley, held office in Illinois for 39 years, including 22 as the Mayor of Chicago. You don't create a dynasty like that without receiving and paying off many and large political debts. Guess who is on President Biden's short list for the nomination. Far beyond just the stench of a deal promising a nomination to SCOTUS in exchange for turning around a failing presidential campaign, is just how deeply wrong Biden is in citing race and gender as his initial and fundamental criteria. Why on earth would the President restrict the pool of candidates to the 7% of the population that is both black and female? Is that how you get the best qualified candidate? No, but that is not what Biden is looking for. He is paying off a political debt while appealing to blacks on the basis of race and not on the basis of making their lives better economically or in any real way. All while pandering to the Affirmative Action set. You know, the people who believe that two evils can make a right. And especially in the slave and Jim Crow states, that was done to create an unfair and undeserved advantage for the whites; they even had names indicating your fraction of offending blackness. Someone who was half black would have been called a mulatto. A quadroon was ¼ black, and an octoroon ⅛ black. I would have been a https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Like_Me (hexadecaroon). It was terrible, cruel and is a remaining stain on our nation. On the other hand if you had any portion of black blood but looked white, you were said to be able to “pass,” pass as being white–a huge advantage. Appearances were all. And for those many continuing to seek advantage today, still are. Today, if you have the slightest amount of non-white features, you can pass as a POC, a person of color. And today this is the advantage. This is just as unfair and wrong, and is done to give unfair advantage to people who look in any way non-white. Today's color preference flip is still wrong, unfair and needs to be stopped now. All we have done is flip the evil. Story: In 1969, a Star Trek episode showed the hatred and unfairness that existed between two differently colored peoples on the planet Cheron. Each group had half black and half white faces, with a vertical dividing line down the middle of their faces. The group whose faces were black on the right side felt justifiably and completely superior to the group whose faces were white on the right side. This developed into a race hatred that completely baffled the crew of the Starship Enterprise. As it should have. It made no sense at all. Insane and damaging. Flipping the colors side-to-side makes all the difference? Takes an evil and makes it into a good? And it's exactly what we are doing today. Black or POC used to be bad and white good, and now black is good and white is bad. Insane and damaging. This kind of insanity breeds absurdities that underscore the wrongness. For example, taking calculated advantage of the race flip, Rachel Dolezal, a white woman born to white parents, faked being black to the point where she became an NAACP chapter president. Senator Elizabeth Warren, D-MA, gained advantage in her work and in politics by pretending to be Native American. And stranger things yet fall out of this insanity. George Zimmerman, a man of mixed race, was accused–and acquitted–of murdering Treyvon Martin, a black youth. The identity politics crowd felt the need to invent a new term, “White Mexican,” to describe Zimmerman, who is clearly a POC. Lots of twisting and shouting needs to be done to make everything black and white–with the white at fault. President Biden said loud and clear that he was going to select a black female as his running mate in 2020. Seems that being half-black and all female helped qualify Ms. Harris to be our Vice President. Despite having paltry support even from her home state of California in her quickly failed presidential run....

Gratitude is the bedrock, the touchstone–cornerstone–for any effective philosophy, religious dogma, or simply a way to get through life or the day successfully. Ingratitude makes for a grim and unproductive outlook on life, love and politics. Perhaps the most pernicious form of ingratitude is encouraging others to refuse to be grateful. Many on the Left are clearly ungrateful for much of anything, and are encouraging others to join them in this harmful thinking. The 1619 Project and Critical Race Theory distortions of history encourage us to be angry at America instead of knowing how fortunate we are to be in the country that is the most successful of all time, and offers the most freedom and opportunity of any country in the history of history. With claims that everything from healthcare to housing are human rights, there is little to be grateful for here, either. But note the irony: These so-called rights are to be supplied by the very country, America, which is vilified by the same people who claim that America is so deeply flawed that it needs to be re-built. And the taxes in the main come from people the Left criticizes as privileged capitalists.  For their part, many on the Right seem to be demanding that people be grateful. Their position is that people must be grateful for what they get, especially for what they get from taxpayers. That's nonsense. You can't demand gratitude any more than you can demand love or respect. All three must be offered up voluntarily. We are surrounded 24/7 with things we can–and should–be openly grateful for. If you have access to running water in your home, be grateful. One in three people on the planet don't have access to a decent toilet, and one in nine don't have clean water close to home. How about electricity? We all get frustrated when the power goes out; when it returns, our response is likely to be, “Well, finally! What's with those people?” Over 1.2 billion–with a “B”–people don't have any electricity to lose in the first place. Their power is always out. Let's pause for an important distinction: Gratitude is not the same as contentment. The masthead of the Denver Post used to include the saying, “There is no hope for the satisfied man.” Being grateful for everything you have does not mean that you have to be content with everything you have. Some people confuse, “I'm grateful.” with, “I'm good with things the way they are.” Being grateful does not mean going limp. In fact, it takes more strength and discipline to be grateful than to complain. We all can–and should–strive for improvements. And setting new plans and striving, pushing is best done while resting on a firm foundation of gratitude. And being grateful just works. And I like things that work. OK, your turn. The dinner table is where we share values, skills, tips and tricks--anything that if passed along might make a difference. The dinner table includes where we eat, in or out, traveling in the car, watching TV, hanging out--anything we do with other members of our family. There is rich evidence in sports and politics about the value of the dinner table. The Mannings (football), Kennedys and Bushes come immediately to mind. Go as far back as the Adamses. The government cannot possibly be either our dinner table contributors or other participants. This is the only way to pass along our values as well as knowledge to our children and grandchildren. Passing along values and knowledge is far more valuable than money or possessions. The world is our dinner table. This podcast makes the case for the nurture side of the nature vs. nurture discussion. And let's take the vs. part out; both are powerful influencers, and should not at all be looked at as being in opposition one to the other. Nature and nurture. And we are also going to talk about the different roles and responsibilities we all have around the dinner table--part of the nurture element. The family dinner table is the metaphor we'll use, but the roles and responsibilities are transportable to other settings. Conversations at the dinner table can certainly be effective, as are doing activities together, conversations in the car, during exercise, and talking while just hanging out. I include all of this under “The Dinner Table.” For the dinner table to work, to start with someone has to know something worthwhile. No, I am not talking about biases or opinions based on preconceived notions. And I am not talking about lecturing anyone, or trying to be right simply because you know, by God, you're right. I am talking about things that will make the people around you better if they listen and take action on what you said or showed them by example. Making your case verbally with logic, making your case by example, making your case with care and with the other person's benefit in mind can open a path for you to be heard. Share what you believe if you can also share, calmly and logically, why you believe it. And for the dinner table to work, someone else has to be willing to listen. Not be willing to buy into everything that's said, but to be respectful enough to listen. Imagine that; a conversation where the speaker has something valuable to say, and the listener has enough intellectual curiosity and respect to actually listen.  The evidence of the power of the dinner table is all around us. I'll pass along some examples I have read about, and some from my own experience. And, my guess is, you have examples of your own.  In sports, one of the first examples that comes to mind is the Manning family. Archie, Dad, and sons, Peyton and Eli, were all starting NFL quarterbacks; the sons have two Super Bowl rings each. Had the eldest son, Cooper, not been diagnosed with spinal stenosis the summer before he was to play football at his Dad's alma mater, the University of Mississippi, he could easily have been the best of the three sons. How did that happen? Football, specifically quarterbacking, was discussed at the actual dinner table, and frequently practiced in the backyard and other settings. For many years.
