Today, we have the distinct honor of speaking with Dorothy Cochrane, a true pioneer in aviation history and one of the most highly regarded curators at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Since joining the Smithsonian in 1977, Dorothy has been a driving force behind the preservation, research, and exhibition of aviation's rich legacy. Her career has spanned decades of innovation and change in the aviation world, but what sets Dorothy apart is her ability to amplify the stories that have often gone unheard or underrepresented. Her leadership has helped shape some of the most influential exhibits at the museum, including the widely acclaimed "We All Fly" exhibit, which brings much-needed attention to the critical role general aviation plays in everyday life. Throughout her career, Dorothy has not only focused on the technological achievements that define aviation but also on the personal stories that bring those achievements to life. She's been instrumental in shining a spotlight on women in aviation, celebrating pioneers like Amelia Earhart, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, and countless other trailblazers whose legacies might otherwise have been overlooked. Her deep commitment to uncovering and showcasing these narratives has inspired generations, encouraging new talent and especially young women to reach for the skies, just as these early aviation icons did. Dorothy's contributions to the field have earned her numerous prestigious awards, including the Katharine Wright Trophy, which honors individuals whose work has significantly impacted aviation. Her accolades reflect not only her expertise in aviation history but also her tireless advocacy for diversity and inclusion in the industry. Through her work, she has brought forward the stories of those who broke barriers and overcame obstacles, reminding us of the importance of representation and the power of role models in aviation. In today's conversation, we will explore Dorothy's remarkable journey through the world of aviation, her passion for preserving these incredible stories, and the importance of making aviation history accessible to everyone. We'll also dive into the rich history of women in aviation, a topic Dorothy has championed for decades, and discuss how these narratives continue to inspire future generations to embrace the boundless possibilities of flight. Takeaways  A passion for history can lead to a meaningful career in aviation.  General aviation is a vital but often underappreciated part of the aviation industry.  The We All Fly exhibit showcases the diverse aspects of aviation and its impact on daily life.  Women in aviation have historically faced challenges, and understanding their specific struggles is key to increasing female representation.  Equal treatment and being taken seriously are critical for women advancing in aviation careers.  The Catherine Wright Trophy is an important recognition of contributions to the field.  Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Rosemary Mariner, and Peggy Chabrian are key figures in aviation history.  Normalizing women's involvement in aviation is essential for the industry's progress.  Women should embrace opportunities, promote their journey, and appreciate their contributions to the field.

PR House'dan Duygu Ersoy imzasıyla iletilen ‘basın bülteni' dikkatimizi hayli çekti: DE-CIX'in Türkiye'de yaptığı EURO 2024 izleme alışkanlıkları araştırmasının sonuçlarına göre; her 10 kişiden 8'i maçları kesinlikle izleyeceğini ifade ediyormuş.

This Day in Legal History: Bruno Hauptmann ExecutedOn this day in legal history, April 3, 1936, Bruno Richard Hauptmann faced the ultimate penalty under the law, execution by electric chair, for one of the most infamous crimes of the 20th century—the kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh Jr., the toddler son of famed aviator Charles Lindbergh and Anne Morrow Lindbergh. The case, often referred to as "The Crime of the Century," captivated the nation and the world, unfolding a saga of mystery, tragedy, and a controversial legal battle that raised numerous questions about evidence and the fairness of the trial. Hauptmann's conviction was primarily based on the discovery of ransom money in his possession and his insistence on his innocence till his final moments did little to quell public debate over his guilt. His execution marked a somber finale to a case that still intrigues historians, legal scholars, and the public, reflecting on the complexities of justice and the media's role in shaping public perception.Donald Trump has initiated a lawsuit against Andy Litinsky and Wes Moss, co-founders of Trump Media & Technology Group Corp., for allegedly improperly setting up the company, thereby disputing their entitlement to an 8.6% share currently worth $606 million. This legal action in Florida follows a suit by Litinsky and Moss against Trump in Delaware, concerning their promised shares in the social media entity. Amidst this legal tussle, Trump Media's stock experienced significant volatility, especially after revealing a substantial loss and minimal revenue for 2023, alongside a critical need for funding from a recent SPAC merger to continue operations. Trump accuses the co-founders of failing in their duties to properly establish corporate governance, launch the Truth Social platform, and secure a suitable merger partner, claiming their actions jeopardized the company. Despite these challenges, Trump's stake in the company, constituting 57% and valued at $4.02 billion, significantly boosts his net worth, potentially aiding in settling legal debts. The legal disputes extend to a Delaware court, where the judge expressed surprise at Trump's choice to sue in Florida rather than counterclaim in Delaware, hinting at possible sanctions against Trump for this strategy. The ongoing legal battles underscore the complex dynamics within Trump Media and the significant financial stakes involved.Trump Sues Truth Social Company Co-Founders to Zero Them Out (1)In New York, a proposal aiming to regulate the use of AI-generated deepfakes in election campaigns is in jeopardy of being excluded from the state's final budget, as leaders deliberate on more pressing issues like housing and healthcare. Governor Kathy Hochul's proposal requires campaigns to disclose any artificial intelligence use in campaign materials 60 days prior to an election, a regulation echoing laws in states such as Michigan. However, lawmakers argue the complexity of the issue merits a separate legislative process, despite the potential difficulty in passing it outside the budget. The proposal remains a topic of discussion, yet faces opposition, including concerns over broad definitions that might infringe on normal technology use and trigger extensive litigation. Critics, including the New York Civil Liberties Union, warn of potential First Amendment conflicts and advocate for a more thoughtful approach. The outcome of these budget negotiations could have significant national implications, especially with New York's role in determining the balance of power in the US House. The legislative session continues until June 6, leaving some time for debate, though the clock is ticking for addressing AI deepfake concerns before the 2024 election.AI Election Deepfake Measure at Risk in NY Budget NegotiationsCalifornia is at the forefront of considering legislation to protect privacy concerning brain-scanning technology, alongside similar initiatives in Colorado and Minnesota. These proposed laws aim to safeguard consumer data from neural devices, which range from sleep monitors to brain-computer interfaces like those developed by Elon Musk's Neuralink. The push for regulation is driven by concerns over the rapid advancement of neurotechnology without corresponding privacy protections, highlighting the potential for misuse of brain activity data. The California bill, if passed, would categorize neural data as "sensitive personal information," granting consumers rights to limit its use and disclosure. This legislative effort underscores a significant gap in current privacy laws, which do not fully address the nuances of neural data collected outside traditional medical settings. Advocates, including the Neurorights Foundation, stress the urgency of addressing these privacy issues, especially as AI advancements could amplify risks. The tech industry, with stakeholders like Meta Platforms Inc. and Apple Inc., is closely monitoring the legislation, advocating for clear definitions to avoid overly broad applications. California's move to protect neural data is part of a broader trend to expand the scope of "sensitive personal information," posing new compliance challenges for businesses navigating the evolving privacy landscape.Brain-Scanning Privacy Protections Get California Consideration Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

How do we find peace and purpose in our existence? How do we balance work, play, spirituality, social obligations and relationships? This book has resonated powerfully with people since it was first published in 1955. Written primarily for women, it has also been labeled as ‘one of the 30 most important books for men under 30'. Hi Friend, Last summer, the family was off doing their own thing, and I found myself at home alone with three hairy and very barky friends. I didn't feel obligated to participate in what they were doing. In truth, I wasn't invited. That allowed me to be alone without pressures, family responsibilities, email, calendars, or other distractions - all guilt-free.But I wasn't alone. I was in solitude. Glorious solitude. This solitude allowed me the space to think and do what I wanted needed. I chose a stack of books, a run or two, and no small amount of just sitting. “When one is connected to one's own core is when one is connected to others, I am beginning to discover. And for me, the core, the inner spring, can best be found through solitude." -Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Gift from the SeaThe idea of solitude is not novel. Anne Lindberg purposefully put herself in solitude when she wrote Gift From The Sea. Pablo Picasso also believed in solitude. He said it best, “Without great solitude, no serious work is possible” - Pablo PicassoAnd just yesterday, from sent me a clipping from a magazine with this from Lady Gaga,“I'm interested in living more of a life of solitude. It's nice to have time to be alone, and be expansive, and know you are enough. I wish I could tell my younger self that.” - Lady GagaThere is a privilege in this exercise. Lady Gaga has problems you and I don't (be thankful). Bill Gates is in rarified air with his quarterly trip to a cabin on the lake with a stack of books. Obviously, very few can do that. If we leave it at that, we would be making an excuse for inaction. There is no reason you can't find an hour alone without distractions and a notebook. It might mean you get up a little earlier, go to bed a little later, or have a conversation with your humans, telling them what you need. You and I have, if we are lucky, 30,000 sunrises. After we get our eight hours of sleep ;), we have 1,000 minutes every day. If we let it, all those minutes will fill up with a barrage of distractions. Once your eyes open, our phones, humans, and monkey minds start. We have to make space. Space for thought, deep work, and for ourselves. "In complete solitude, I stop objectifying myself. In the bush I don't think of myself on some social hierarchy. I don't define my value as a comparison with others. The birds and animals don't judge me. It's a kind of healing in which I become human again. In complete solitude, we are not a concept of ourselves; we are ourselves." -Boyd Varty, The Lion Tracker's Guide to LifeSolitude allows us time to reflect on what is important, gain perspective, and respond to the world. In solitude, you have space to consider how to respond while everyone else is busy reacting. I'll leave you with this, again from Anne Lindbergh. "I must find a balance somewhere, or an alternating rhythm between these two extremes; a swinging of the pendulum between solitude and communion, between retreat and return. In my periods of retreat, perhaps I can learn something to carry back into my worldly life." -Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Gift from the SeaYou might not be able to carve a week away at a lakeside cabin, but can you find an hour over the next week to spend with yourself in solitude? Nothing electronic. Just you, a notebook, and your thoughts (as scary as that might be). Be gentle with yourself. We are all a work in progress. People probably thought Marcus Aurelius was strange. The time he spent alone in his room. The long walks he took by himself. We know they thought it was strange that he was seen reading and writing in the Colosseum, ignoring the carnage of the games below.“The world today does not understand, in either man or woman,” Anne Morrow Lindbergh writes in Gift from the Sea, “the need to be alone.” Perhaps we ourselves don't understand it. We don't quite see the point. Or as much as we enjoy it, we don't see it as much of a priority. As we discussed over at Daily Dad in an email recently, parents will manage to make time for so many things…but quiet time by or for themselves is written off as an impossible indulgence.---And in today's Daily Stoic Journal reading, Ryan examines the importance of cultivating a safe and free place to retreat to inside of your own mind.✉️ Sign up for the Daily Stoic email: https://dailystoic.com/dailyemail

What a terrific kick-off to season five! This is a wonderful conversation with Mariah Fredericks about her latest novel, The Lindbergh Nanny. Here's a description from the publisher: When the most famous toddler in America, Charles Lindbergh, Jr., is kidnapped from his family home in New Jersey in 1932, the case makes international headlines. Already celebrated for his flight across the Atlantic, his father, Charles, Sr., is the country's golden boy, with his wealthy, lovely wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, by his side. But there's someone else in their household—Betty Gow, a formerly obscure young woman, now known around the world by another name: the Lindbergh Nanny.   A Scottish immigrant deciphering the rules of her new homeland and its East Coast elite, Betty finds Colonel Lindbergh eccentric and often odd, Mrs. Lindbergh kind yet nervous, and Charlie simply a darling. Far from home and bruised from a love affair gone horribly wrong, Betty finds comfort in caring for the child, and warms to the attentions of handsome sailor Henrik, sometimes known as Red. Then, Charlie disappears. Suddenly a suspect in the eyes of both the media and the public, Betty must find the truth about what really happened that night, in order to clear her own name—and to find justice for the child she loves. In this episode, Mariah and I discussed the person of Betty Gow, Charles Lindbergh, Sr.'s strange childrearing ideas, Mariah's own theory regarding the case, and how she began writing historical fiction. About this Episode   See the full show notes at: https://www.TheLindberghs.com/74   Hi friends, it's Lyn.   This summer of 2021 Erik's father, Jon Lindbergh passed away. Jon was the oldest surviving child of Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Anne was pregnant with Jon when they lost their first born, Charles Junior.   In this episode Erik and I sat down together in our studio and talked about Jon, what it was like for Erik to be his son, and how it informed who Erik is today. I'm proud of my hubby Erik for taking on this episode.   This is a special recording. Erik and I twice tried to record this episode over the past couple of months but the timing wasn't right, there was still much process and grieve. We once even sat in front of the microphones, took a deep breath, and then abandoned the recording. Erik understandably wasn't ready. This week, the timing was right and Erik was ready to share. At the end of the recording we added a couple of clips of Jon Lindbergh sharing his favorite childhood memories. It is difficult for us to hear Jon's voice with his loss still so new and raw, but we wanted to share these voice clips to help keep his memory alive.   I hope this episode brings you hope and healing among the parent-child relationships in your life.   Sincerely, Lyn     Our Favorite Quotes from this Episode   It was still bubbling and burbling and it comes and goes in waves. You feel great and then it hits you again. ~Erik   How to we navigate this stuff? It's painful no matter how you look at it. ~Erik   I'm a glass half full kind of guy. ~Erik   Keep talking to them [your children] because they may act like they are not listening, but they are. ~Erik   I have compassion for him [Jon Lindbergh] because he grew up in very different circumstances. He was always loving, but awkward. ~Erik   My dad, Larry Sanstrum, family was his life. Family was what he loved and thrived in. Family was his priority. Whenever I came home, Dad would stop everything he was doing and talk with me. ~Lyn   It was sort of a right of passage with my Dad when you could go on the high-hunt in the North Cascades. It was a bonding and empowering experience we had over the years. This is what we did. ~Erik   I feel somewhat lucky in that I forgave him for his inadequacies, and I feel empathy for him, and I feel like he did the best he could which was inadequate. I'm probably inadequate as a father to my son, but I try and I try to do better, and give more, and give better. In that way we are all part of a circle. To forgive him is to forgive myself because it gives you permission to be who you are. ~Erik   When you have compassion for yourself, you can have compassion for others around you. ~Erik   Sometimes we say good parents have good kids, but we all know kids raised in amazing circumstances who end up screwed up, and we know the opposite. ~Lyn   We need to be who we are, and that begins today. ~Erik   The house was not haunted when we lived there, it was probably us who haunted that house. ~Erik   Have empathy and love for the stuff that hurts and the stuff that doesn't make sense. ~Erik   Mentioned in this Episode Jon Lindbergh, Erik's Dad Charles A. In 1929, Anne Spencer Morrow, a 23-year-old introverted intellectual, married a man who was, at the time, arguably the most celebrated person in the world. He was Charles Lindbergh, and his incredible solo flight over the Atlantic in 1927 had catapulted him to a wild level of fame. It was Charles Lindbergh, decades before Jackie Kennedy and Princess Diana, whose fame first gave rise to packs of news photographers. They followed the Lindberghs everywhere. When the Lindberghs' infant son Charles Jr. was kidnapped in1932 , the press paid frenzied attention to the crime; the story remained in the headlines for months.Among the many heartbreaking artifacts that remain from the kidnapping is a front-page item in The New York Times from March 3, 1932: It's a brief notice, stating that the baby had been ill: "In the hope that whoever has taken the baby may see and understand the necessity for care, Mrs. Lindbergh...gave out the diet she had been following." It included -- underscoring a young mother's anguish in the most painful conceivable way -- "half a cup of orange juice on waking." * * *Anne became both an aviator and a writer, and her book, Gift From the Sea, has sold some 3 million copies since it was first published in 1955.Katie talks with Anne's youngest child, Reeve Lindbergh, also a writer. In her 2018 memoir, Two Lives, Reeve reflected on her own “Two Lives,” navigating her role as the public face of her family while, at the same time, leading a quiet existence in rural Vermont. Charles Lindbergh was a complicated man. Historians have documented his respect for the Nazis in prewar Germany. And in 2003, it was revealed that he had led a double life, having had a years-long affair with a woman in Germany with whom he had three children. But that isn't what Katie wanted to talk to Reeve Lindbergh about. In the blog post that accompanies this episode, Katie writes about her reasons for not asking Reeve about her father's other life. It can be found on the podcast's website.Artwork by PrismaMusic composed and performed by Andrea PerryProducer: Alice HudsonMother Word Cloud: Please contribute the one word that best describes your mother to the Mother Word Cloud.

Simplifying our lives can reduce our stress. Here are three suggestions:Donate stuff.Let go of draining relationships.Act as if you already have more than enough. This is a non-affiliate link to Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s book, Gift from the Sea.And here’s a longer passage (pages 17-18) from the 50th anniversary edition:“I want first of all . . . to be at peace with myself. I want a singleness of eye, a purity of intention, a central core to my life that will enable me to carry out these obligations and activities as well as I can. I want, in fact—to borrow from the language of the saints—to live "in grace" as much of the time as possible. I am not using this term in a strictly theological sense. By grace I mean an inner harmony, essentially spiritual, which can be translated into outward harmony. I am seeking perhaps what Socrates asked for in the prayer from the Phaedrus when he said, "May the outward and inward man be at one." I would like to achieve a state of inner spiritual grace from which I could function and give as I was meant to in the eye of God.”—Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Gift from the Sea

Bruno Richard Hauptmann (1899-1936) was convicted of the kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh Jr., the infant son of Charles Lindbergh and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, which was known as "The Crime of the Century." Hauptmann was born in Germany, fought in WWI, and emigrated to the United States in 1923.On the evening of March 1, 1932, someone kidnapped 20-month-old Charles Lindbergh, Jr. from his bedroom in Highfields, New Jersey. A ransom note demanded $50,000, which was delivered by Dr. John F. Condon, but the child was not returned, and his lifeless body was discovered in the woods 4 miles from his home on May 12, 1932.Hauptmann was identified and arrested after a bank teller traced the serial number on a $10 gold certificate to the Lindbergh ransom, and it was traced to Hauptmann's car. Among other things, $14,600 of the ransom money was found in Hauptmann's garage. He was convicted, sentenced to death, and executed on April 3, 1936. However, some people have argued that Hauptmann was innocent, and that he was framed for the crime.Bill Cox (1897-1968) was a guitarist, singer, and harmonica player from Kanawha County, Kentucky. He was also known as the "Dixie Songbird," and recorded many songs, primarily for Conqueror Records. This 78rpm record, titled "The Trial of Bruno Richard Hauptmann, Part I & II" was recorded on February 26, 1935, in New York City. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Disconnecting is counter-intuitive to how high achieving women typically operate.  We "white knuckle it" through things and applaud ourselves that we're sticking with it, when we're often making things worse.   What we need is a break, not as a luxury, as a necessity.    Self Care Rant around 8 minute mark!  Jen and I hate on bath bombs and rose'.  The intent of a personal retreat is rest and rejuvenation, what self care was supposed to mean. Being with yourself long enough to study your thoughts, to study your current behaviors and ask yourself what needs to change? What do I need to be a better version of myself.   This does not have to be expensive!  Jen has great trips to meet every situation! FREE PERSONAL RETREAT DOWNLOAD!!!!  WHAT!!!   It's so good she should have charged for it! - Hit this link and scroll to the bottom of the page, it's beautiful! As high achieving women, we don't use our strategic powers to ask  “what do I need right now?”    To turn all of our special powers inward.   Gift From the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Charles Lindbergh's wife would go to a little cottage on the beach by herself for months. Women need solitude to find the true essence of who they are and get to the core of who they are.     We have trapped ourselves by thinking we are the center our universe. However, we do not control our universe. In fact, that perspective is hurtful not only to ourselves but to others.  When we don't let the others in our lives step up and use all of their gifts and talents, we've robbed them.   Jen -  “I didn't realize how wound I was and how on edge”    We need this to remind ourselves, we're far more  BADASS than we give ourselves credit for. “I think so many of us have lost her way or maybe we never really knew who we were.” You don't always need dramatic changes, sometimes you need a quiet space to reflect on how you feel about your current life to gain appreciation and perspective. WOW, one year, thank you everyone for listening. It has been an amazing year, with special guests such as Hydark, Shawn and Tahlya combined with support from the Podfather Zane, all hail Zane. We had fun recording this episode, we were all together, with the Professor and Buck in the same room and DJ in another because he is so loud in real life, seriously we think he swallowed a megaphone or something. We also wish to apologise for not having Nerf guns with which to shoot the DJ, but as it was in a public place we might have gotten into trouble. But down to business, first up in this episode we look at new bandages that use electrical shocks to improve healing and shorten the time involved dramatically. These things are so cool they make Aquaman look normal. While it is early days yet this is something we can look forward to. Next up we look at the latest from Black Mesa and the issues with colour saturation making fans blue. Wait, what, haha, you will have to listen to find out more. Then we wander down History Avenue to take a look at an amazing comic from 1941 that was so far ahead of its time the American censors were threatened, which makes Buck furious. When the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory caught fire in 1911, it was the worst workplace fire in New York City’s history. In fact, if it weren’t for September 11th, it would still hold that horrible record. In just 18 minutes, the fire took 146 lives. It was devastating, but it was also preventable. The incident inspired activists and politicians. It also encouraged workers to join unions and fight for their right to a safe work environment. Then we discuss the most famous kidnapping in American history — that of baby Charles Lindbergh. Baby Lindbergh was taken from the second story of his family home. The kidnapper left behind a broken ladder and a poorly written ransom note. The nearly two year old boy was the son of aviation star Charles Lindbergh and his wife Anne Morrow Lindbergh. The distraught parents did everything they could to get their baby back. They paid the ransom and searched high and low for their child. But it was too late… And now for a note about our process. Aviator and writer Anne Morrow Lindbergh is born. Anne Morrow – born on June 22, 1906, in Englewood, New Jersey – met the famous aviator Charles Lindbergh while her father was ambassador to Mexico. They married in 1929, just two years after he’d flown his “Spirit of St. Louis” plane from New York to Paris, and one year after she’d graduated from college with two literary awards. Over the next two years, Lindbergh learned to fly, became the first American woman to get her glider’s license and earned her private pilot’s license. The couple spent their early years of marriage flying and charting routes all over the world. In 1934, Lindbergh became the first woman awarded the Hubbard Gold Medal from the National Geographic Society, for logging 40,000 miles over five continents with her husband. In her first book, North to the Orient, Lindbergh told of her single-engine flight from Canada to Japan and China, over uncharted routes. She went on to publish 12 books and five volumes of diaries and letters. Tragedy struck when one of the Lindberghs’ six children, a 20-month-old son, was kidnapped for ransom in 1932. Two months later, his body was found just two miles from the family home. Among Lindbergh’s many awards was being named into the National Aviation Hall of Fame and the National Women’s Hall of Fame. She died on February 7, 2001. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

America, I think, is not a place. If another people lived here, the geography would be the same but it would not be our nation. America, I think, is not a government. Our pendulum swings from one extreme to the other and our politics are not unique. America, I think, is not an economy. Free markets exist in other nations and we hold no patent on capitalism. America is a people, an outlook and a family. (A dysfunctional family, yes, but aren't they all?) Eighty-three years ago the American son was a swaggering youth with glinting eye, proud of his muscle and chin held high. Mark Twain wrote about his American strut in a 1926 letter from Europe to President Calvin Coolidge: “We, unfortunately, don't make a good impression collectively… There ought to be a law prohibiting over three Americans going anywhere abroad together.” Saul Bellow, in his Adventures of Augie March, gave our American boy a voice during the Great Depression: “I am an American, Chicago born – Chicago, that somber city – and go at things as I have taught myself, freestyle, and will make a record in my own way: first to knock, first admitted; sometimes an innocent knock, sometimes a not so innocent.” America. Land of Opportunity. A chicken in every pot and a car in every driveway. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps. Hard work never killed anybody. Cream rises to the top. Second place is the first loser. You can do it. And we did. “Leaders of the free world, liberators of the oppressed,” we're less than 5 percent of the world's population yet consume 26 percent of its energy and 30 percent of its resources. A few years later Anne Morrow Lindbergh, wife of that ocean-crossing hero, began to worry that things were getting out of balance: “America, which has the most glorious present still existing in the world today, hardly stops to enjoy it, in her insatiable appetite for the future.” John Steinbeck echoed Anne's words. “Then there is the kind of Christmas with presents piled high, the gifts of guilty parents as bribes because they have nothing else to give. The wrappings are ripped off and the presents are thrown down and at the end the child says – ‘Is that all?' Well it seems to me that America now is like that second kind of Christmas. Having too many THINGS they spend their hours and money on the couch searching for a soul. A strange species we are. We can stand anything God and Nature can throw at us save only plenty. If I wanted to destroy a nation, I would give it too much and I would have it on its knees, miserable, greedy and sick.” John Steinbeck was immediately accused of being a Communist sympathizer. America didn't listen to Anne or John but became more intense in the pursuit of whatever it was we were chasing. “Go to college. Get good grades. Go to college. Rise to the top. Go to college. Enjoy the good life.” Eighteen years ago Faith Popcorn wrote in her famous Popcorn Report, “The trouble in corporate America is that too many people with too much power live in a box (their home), then travel the same road every day to another box (their office).” Charles Osgood spotlighted this disconnection on CBS Sunday Morning, March 30, 2008, “The average urban dwelling American sees up to 5,000 advertising 'messages' –from T-shirts to billboards – every day. That compares with 2,000 thirty years ago.” [Source: Yankelovich, Inc.] Wow. No wonder we've become a nation of consumers. With 5,000 messages hammering us every day, we hardly have time to think about anything else. And now it's 2009. The whole planet waits to see whether America has the strength, the wit and the will to correct our mistakes. They wait because the economy of the world depends on whether we're able to buy the stuff they need to sell us. The solution appears to be that the world needs https://wizardacademy.org/scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=77 (better ad writers.) Roy H. Williams

I had the great good fortune to be raised by a single mother who was in extremely difficult circumstances: she had no education, no money, and received no monthly child support checks. And these were the June Cleaver/Leave It To Beaver years when it was socially unacceptable to be a “divorcée.” I say it was good fortune because it was by watching my mother that I learned it's always too soon to panic, life is what you make it, nothing worth having comes easy. You know the Winston Churchill speech, “Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never–in nothing, great or small, large or petty–never give in, except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.” I'm pretty sure Churchill got all that from my mom. Those who know me casually assume I'm a sexist pig because I say things like, “You hit like a girl.” But those who know me better will tell you the big decisions are usually made by Pennie, my wife and partner of 30+ years, and another woman, Corrine Taylor, manages the daily operation of all our enterprises. We men tend to be impatient and short-sighted. And we show it by what we write. The male voice in literature is hungry. Climb that mountain. Reach for those stars. Conquer. Subdue. Reproduce. Win. But the literary voice of a woman is quieter, as though she has eyes that see from a greater distance. “What is sure, predictable, inevitable – the one certain thing you know concerning your future, and mine?” “That we shall die.” “Yes, there's really only one question that can be answered, Genry, and we already know the answer… The only thing that makes life possible is permanent, intolerable uncertainty; not knowing what comes next.” – Ursula K. Le Guin, from chapter 5 of The Left Hand of Darkness     You might also recall the following passage from a memo I sent you in February: We had come home. We had discussed whether to go out for dinner or eat in. I said I would build a fire, we could eat in. I built the fire, I started dinner, I asked John if he wanted a drink. I got him a Scotch and gave it to him in the living room, where he was reading in the chair by the fire where he habitually sat…. I finished getting dinner, I set the table in the living room where, when we were home alone, we could eat within sight of the fire. I find myself stressing the fire because fires were important to us. I grew up in California, John and I lived there together for twenty-four years, in California we heated our houses by building fires. We built fires even on summer evenings, because the fog came in. Fires said we were home, we had drawn the circle, we were safe through the night. I lit the candles. John asked for a second drink before sitting down. I gave it to him. We sat down. My attention was on mixing the salad. John was talking, then he wasn't. –   excerpted from The Year of Magical Thinking (2005), Joan Didion's attempt to comprehend her husband's sudden death after 40 years of marriage. The challenge of a woman is that she's expected to take care of everybody. But who takes care of her? “Woman's life today is tending more and more toward the state William James describes so well in the German word, 'Zerrissenheit: torn-to-pieces-hood.' She cannot live perpetually in 'Zerrissenheit.' She will be shattered into a thousand pieces. On the contrary, she must consciously encourage those pursuits which oppose the centrifugal forces of today…. Solitude, says the moon shell. Center-down, say the Quaker saints. To the possession of the self the way is inward, says Plotinus. The cell of self-knowledge is the stall in which the pilgrim must be reborn, says St. Catherine of Siena.” – Anne Morrow Lindbergh, Gift from the Sea, (1955) It is in honor of women worldwide that Wizard Academy is...
