August saw major reversal of fortunes for the markets after July's bounce back. A larger majority of investors now believe the global economy is likely to tip into recession within 12 months, according to the latest Bank of America global fund managers' survey. A net 58% of respondents believe recession is likely, up from a net 47% a month earlier. The net figure, which represents positive answers less negative ones, is the highest reading since May 2020. The JSE all share index logging its biggest one-day gain in three weeks on Friday after investors reacted favourably to the closely watched US nonfarm payrolls report. The world's largest economy created 315,000 jobs in August, versus 290,000 jobs that the economists had forecast. Global equities markets had been jittery in the days leading up to the release of the jobs report, which is seen as one of the more reliable gauges for the outlook on inflation that is hovering at a 40-year high in the US. The sustainability of near-term gains will, however, be tested as we edge closer towards the Fed's rates decision later this month. Sadly US market faded late on Friday and that soured sentiment heading into the new week with European futures down and the euro taking a fresh spill this morning after Russia shut a major gas pipeline to Europe, leading some governments there to announce emergency measures to ease the pain of soaring energy prices. U.S. markets are closed for the Labor Day holiday so liquidity will be lighter than normal, while The impact of Europe's energy crisis on global financial markets cannot be ignored. OPEC+ is meeting today and is likely to keep oil output quotas unchanged for October, although some sources would not rule out a small production cut to bolster prices that have slid due to fears of an economic slowdown. In the US the Dow added 6.7% for the month, the S&P 9.1% and the Nasdaq, 12.3%. The market has been fuelled by some better than expected big tech earnings, which came after a 75 basis point interest rate hike from the Federal Reserve on Wednesday, as widely expected. However, the Fed's tone was less hawkish, with chair Jerome Powell indicating that the central bank could slow the pace of its rate hikes, saying its future moves will be data-dependent. Asian shares were sluggish this morning as we kick off the new month though, as disappointing Chinese economic data fed doubts Wall Street's rally could be sustained, while the dollar continued its retreat on the yen as speculators were forced out of suddenly unprofitable short positions. China's official measure of factory activity contracted in July as fresh virus flare-ups weighed on demand, and the Caixin PMI also missed forecasts This doesn't bode well for the raft of other PMIs due this week, including the influential U.S. ISM survey, while the July payrolls report on Friday should also show a further slowdown. Markets will be on tenterhooks for the U.S. consumer price report on Friday, especially after EU inflation shocked many with a record high last week. Forecasts are for a steep rise of 0.7% in May, though the annual pace is seen holding at 8.3% while core inflation is seen slowing a little to 5.9%. A high number would only add to expectations of aggressive tightening by the Federal Reserve with markets already priced for half-point hikes in June and July and almost 200 basis points by the end of the year. Some analysts thought Friday's upbeat payrolls report suggested the Fed was on track for a soft landing though. The European Central Bank meets on Thursday and President Christine Lagarde is considered certain to confirm an end to bond buying this month and a first rate hike in July, though the jury is out on whether that will be 25 or 50 basis points. Money markets are priced for 125 bps of hikes by year-end, and 100 bps as soon as October. We've got first quarter GDP out tomorrow and in commodity markets, wheat futures jumped 4% after Russia struck Ukraine's capital Kyiv with missiles, dampening hopes for progress in peace talks. Oil prices got an added lift after Saudi Arabia set higher prices for shipments to Asia, while investors are wagering supply increases planned by OPEC will not be enough to meet demand especially as China is easing its lockdowns. Brent adding 97 cents on Monday to reach $120.69 a barrel. Let's find out what the animal spirits are telling us with Chris Holdsworth, chief investment strategist at Investec Wealth and Investment.

The South African (SA) stock market fell for only the third time in the past 18 months in April, as risk appetite soured globally. There were few places to hide on the local bourse, though coal exporter, Thungela, continued to benefit from surging global energy prices, with the stock up 48% MoM and 222% higher YTD, having risen elevenfold since listing less than a year ago. Sasol, the other local beneficiary of higher energy prices, was up 11% MoM. We've started May with most global markets giving in to the bears, bonds rising, the dollar strengthening and central banks eating lots of humble pie. The diary is full of Fed speakers this week, which will give them plenty of opportunity to keep up the hawkish chorus. Let's find out what the animal spirits are telling us with Chris Holdsworth, chief investment strategist at Investec Wealth and Investment

Last month we started the animal spirits by saying that the standoff over Ukraine remains a thorn in the market's side, with concerns a Russian invasion would also cut vital gas supplies to western Europe. Well those concerns and worst fears were realised and have dominated moves in asset prices for the last week especially with oil and gas prices spiking along with gold and PGMs and other agricultural commodities. The ruble crashed harder than a Russian tank outside Kiev and so did the Russian stock market as the scale of unprecedent western sanctions start to bite. And today we see Putin bombing civilian targets as the nluclear threat he issued on Sunday looms horrifically over this entire sorry mess. Let's find out what the animal spirits are telling us with Chris Holdsworth, chief investment strategist at Investec Wealth and Investment.
