A bit on the history of Texas Hold'em Texas Hold'em poker, one of the most popular and widely played variants of the game, has a fascinating history that intertwines with the development of modern poker itself. With its roots traced back to the early 20th century, this game has evolved from a regional curiosity to a global phenomenon. The origins of Texas Hold'em can be traced to Robstown, a small town in Texas, United States, in the early 1900s. It is said that a group of Texans, including legendary figures like Crandell Addington and Amarillo Slim, introduced the game to Las Vegas casinos in the 1960s. However, it wasn't until the 1970s, with the establishment of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) tournament, that Texas Hold'em gained widespread attention. The WSOP, initially held at Binion's Horseshoe Casino, played a pivotal role in popularizing Texas Hold'em. The game's simplicity and strategic depth drew players from different corners of the world. In the early years of the WSOP, the Main Event, featuring a no-limit Texas Hold'em format, became the highlight of the tournament. The legendary "Moneymaker Effect" further catapulted the game's popularity in 2003 when amateur player Chris Moneymaker won the Main Event after qualifying through an online satellite tournament. This victory fueled the online poker boom and solidified Texas Hold'em as the go-to poker variant. The rules of Texas Hold'em are straightforward, adding to its widespread appeal. Each player is dealt two private cards ("hole cards"), and five community cards are placed face-up on the table. Players use a combination of their hole cards and the community cards to create the best possible five-card hand. The strategic element lies in deciding when to bet, fold, or raise based on the evolving situation at the table. Texas Hold'em's rise to global prominence can be attributed to various factors. The advent of televised poker, particularly with the hole cards being revealed to the audience, allowed viewers to witness the psychological and strategic aspects of the game. This led to a surge in interest among both casual players and aspiring professionals. The establishment of online poker platforms further democratized the game, enabling players of all skill levels to participate in real-money games and tournaments from the comfort of their homes. Over the years, Texas Hold'em strategy has evolved significantly. Players have developed different styles, from tight and aggressive to loose and passive, leading to an ever-changing meta-game. Numerous books, articles, and resources have been dedicated to dissecting the intricacies of Texas Hold'em strategy, making it a subject of intense study among serious players. Texas Hold'em's influence extends beyond casinos and online platforms. It has become a cultural touchstone, referenced in movies, television shows, and literature. The game's terminology, like "bluffing," "all-in," and "flop," has seeped into everyday language. In conclusion, the history of Texas Hold'em poker is a journey that began in the heart of Texas and spread to casinos, living rooms, and digital screens worldwide. Its evolution from a local curiosity to a global phenomenon is a testament to the game's accessibility, strategic depth, and cultural resonance. As long as there are players intrigued by the interplay of skill, luck, and psychology, Texas Hold'em's legacy is sure to endure.

A good discussion on the Battle Born Podcast (with Adam) https://vimeo.com/776379960     1996 US Senate election in Massachusetts The odious Bill Weld (R) ran against the evil John Forbes Kerry (D).   The California 12 district election from 1948 O'Leary mentioned that Richard Milhous Nixon garnered the nomination from both the Republican Party (of which he was a member and sitting congressman) and the Democratic Party. It is unclear if this is true—we took a cursory revisionist historical glance at the evidence. What is true is that the Democrats did not run a candidate against Nixon. Nixon was quite popular within the district—eastern Los Angeles area including Pasadena, Pomona, and Whittier—even with Democrats. The future president won 87.8% of the vote in 1948 compared to the 12.2% won by the Progressive Party candidate, Una W. Rice. Fair to say that most Democrats voted for Nixon. Ironically, the 12th congressional district is no longer a GOP stronghold. It is no longer in Southern California, either. Now it exists within the tony Democratic refuge of San Francisco. The district is also the bastion of one “Cruella Demented,” known to her constituents and those throughout the nation as (former?) Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Occasionally my hero, Dennis Miller, has been known to rant and once noted that Pelosi, looks like “a Muppet washed on hot.” I cannot disagree. Does the name Sam Farha mean anything to you? If it does, you're probably a fan of poker. Farha is a rather famous professional poker player. He is most know, however, for a hand he lost. In 2003 Farha was on the verge of elimination from the World Series of Poker Texas Hold ‘Em Main Event … the one you typically see on ESPN. In fact the 2003 tournament, and Sam Farha's role in it, helped make televised Texas Hold ‘Em tournaments a ratings boon for the network. Farha found himself down early after losing a big hand and almost dropped out voluntarily. Friends encouraged him to keep playing. He was a fairly accomplished player, mind you. And he did. And he won hand after hand. Farha reached the final table and meticulously worked his hands until only one man stood between him and his first-ever World Series of Poker title. That one man was a newcomer to the sport. The odds were certainly stacked in Farha's favor. But that one man was observant. He watched Farha for hours on that final table, looking for a tell. That is what poker players call some action a player takes or a reaction they have that indicates they either have a great hand. Or they have crap.  A poker tell is normally subconscious. The player “telling” as it were, doesn't even perceive they're giving away a hint as to what's in their hand. And to be more precise, it's not that they give away what's in their hand, but how good their hand is.  You see, the art of playing poker is the art of keeping your opponents guessing. Do you have a good hand when you place a big bet, so they should fold? Or are you bluffing, so they should call or raise to put the pressure back on you to stay in and not lose any money.  The newcomer standing between Farha and his first World Series of Poker bracelet was Chris Moneymaker. Hell of a name for a poker player, right? Well, it was a hell of a case of foreshadowing, too. Moneymaker studied Farha for hours playing at that final table and noticed he did something different when he was bluffing versus when he had a strong hand. He tapped his cigarette on the table.  At a crucial point in the match, Farha went all-in with a pair of jacks. While that sounds like a strong hand, this is Texas Hold ‘Em, which uses the best five-card hand of seven cards. And going all-in means you're so confident you're going to win the hand, you're going all or nothing. If someone calls and you lose, you're out of the tournament.  Farha was bluffing to intimidate the rookie Moneymaker and chip away at the wagers he'd already bet in that hand. If Moneymaker folded, Farha would be that much closer to winning. But he tapped his cigarette. Moneymaker called. He had two pair. And they survived the final turn of the card to make the unknown accountant from Tennessee, the 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion.  The prize that Farha saw fly away because Moneymaker spotted his tell? $2.5 million dollars. Did you know that influencers and content creators have tells too? I shared them in a LinkedIn Post a couple of weeks ago, but the ideas were so useful to many, I wanted to make sure you heard them too. Today on Winfluence, I'll share the five tells that reveal insights about an influencer that throw up red flags and often make me choose someone different.  This episode of Winfluence is presented by Tagger, a complete influencer marketing management solution. Dan Zack was perhaps the youngest player to get bit by the poker bug when Chris Moneymaker won the 2003 World Series of Poker main event. The Princeton, New Jersey native was just 10 years old at the time, but he was hooked, even going on to read the Harrington on Hold'em strategy series by age 13. The gaming standout had the skills to build up big bankrolls online, but lacked the discipline to hold onto it.  After having to rebuild a few times, Zack finally plugged his leaks and it wasn't long before he established himself as a threat in any game he entered. He won his first WSOP bracelet in 2019, taking down the $2,500 Mixed Triple Draw event. The next year, he bubbled the final table of the $10,000 online main event.  This summer, the 29-year-old was the runaway winner of the WSOP Player of the Year race, having racked up 16 cashes, four final tables and just over $1.45 million in earnings. He also managed to nab his second and third career bracelets, winning both the $10,000 Omaha eight-or-better championship and the $10,000 stud eight-or-better championship.  Highlights from this interview include winning the jar of pennies at the family reunion game, reading Harrington on Hold'em at age 13, losing $20,000 on a church retreat, why children shouldn't learn poker, quitting poker and finding it again in Germany, turning $1,000 into $100,000 in one summer, a crucial PLO pot in the Bahamas, eight 62-hour poker sessions, setting his sights on the series, battling a barker, getting staked for a high roller by a stranger, live stream stakes, losing a $200,000 pot to Garrett Adelstein, getting owned at $2k-$4k by Ray D, betting big on the election, Dustin Diamond, and never having a real job.

Tony is originally from Fort Wayne Indiana but moved to Central Florida when he was six. After college, he had a variety of jobs and began dealing poker in a bar league for fun. In 2003 his dad took him to the WSOP in Las Vegas, which just happened to be the year that Chris Moneymaker won the Main Event. The rest, as they say, is history. On this episode, we'll get to know Tony better.
