"The Space Race", a new film by directors Lisa Cortés and Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, profiles the pioneering Black pilots, scientists, and engineers who joined NASA to serve their country in space, even as their country failed to achieve equality for them back on Earth. From 1963, when the assassination of JFK thwarted Captain Ed Dwight's quest to reach the moon, to 2020, when the echoes of the civil unrest sparked by the killing of George Floyd reached the International Space Station. In today's discussion, Lisa and Diego share their paths to documentaries (1:40), their co-directing process (5:30), the injection of “Afro-Futurism” (12:00), the impact of George Floyd's death on the International Space Station (21:48), and the experience of screening the film with the astronauts themselves (35:30). Seth Porges and Chris Charles Scott's darkly comedic hit film “Class Action Park” skirts the trappings of 1980s nostalgia and chronicles the unbelievable rise and fall of the most insane – and possibly the most dangerous – amusement park that ever existed. In his discussion with Tiller, Seth reflects on the universality of doing idiotic, dangerous things as kids (2:08), the vital tonal shift in the film from hilarity to death (6:40), creating the film on their own dime (19:05), the editorial process (23:20), landing the film at HBO right at the onset of Max (26:15), how the first outline barely changed (31:30), and the choice to feature himself as an on-screen interview as well as incorporate voice-over narration (36:10). My special guest is David Domine who's here to discuss his book about a gay couple who used a sledge hammer to stuff the body of their lover in the basement. Get his book A Dark Room in Glitter Ball City on Amazon   This true crime saga - with an eccentric Southern backdrop - introduces the listener to the story of a murder in a crumbling Louisville mansion and the decades of secrets and corruption that live within the old house's walls. On June 18, 2010, police discover a body buried in the wine cellar of a Victorian mansion in Old Louisville. James Carroll, shot and stabbed the year before, has lain for seven months in a plastic storage bin - his temporary coffin. Homeowner Jeffrey Mundt and his boyfriend, Joseph Banis, point the finger at each other in what locals dub The Pink Triangle Murder. On the surface, this killing appears to be a crime of passion, a sordid love tryst gone wrong in a creepy old house. But as author David Domine sits in on the trials, a deeper story emerges: the struggle between hope for a better future on the one hand and the privilege and power of the status quo on the other. David draws on the confidences of neighbors, drag queens, and other acquaintances within the city's vibrant LGBTQ community to piece together the details of the case. While uncovering the many past lives of the mansion itself, he enters a murky underworld of gossip, neighborhood scandal, and intrigue.   It's super easy to access our archives!   Here's how:   iPhone Users: Access Mysterious Radio from Apple Podcasts and become a subscriber there or if you want access to even more exclusive content join us on Patreon.   Android Users: Enjoy over 800 exclusive member-only posts to include ad-free episodes, case files and more when you join us on Patreon.    Copy and Paste our link in a text message to all your family members and friends! Jeff Tremaine is the king of “Jackass”. As director, writer, and producer, he shepherded the hilarious daredevil phenomenon not only onto TV screens in 2000, but into 8 feature films, including the spinoff “Bad Grandpa” and 2022's “Jackass Forever”. Yet behind the pranks, stunts, and pure Jackass-ery, there is a mastery of documentary filmmaking. Perhaps better than anyone else, Jeff has embodied the phrase “a method to the madness”. In his discussion with Tiller, Jeff reflects on the skateboard origins of Jackass (4:30), his “development” and “preproduction” processes (8:30), getting the first movie greenlit with MTV (16:00), finding new cast members for “Jackass Forever” (24:10), the hidden art of editing Jackass movies (32:45), how certain stunts go from funny to “crazy town” (44:00), his stress level while shooting (49:07), and what's next in his post-Jackass career (54:40).  Produced by: Jacob Miller Executive Producers: Tiller & Fitz Music by: James Carroll & Zydepunk Distributed by: Jake Brennan & Brady Sadler, Double Elvis Productions

In Part 2 of his Holiday Gift Guide series, Dennis is joined via Zoom by four different creative entrepreneurs who have products that are perfect for holiday gift giving. First up is film professor Andy Scahill, the founder of Cinema for Sodomites, an interactive cult movie screening series and a merch line inspired by such gay favorites as Batman Returns, Death Becomes Her and Steel Magnolias. Andy talks about why he decided to launch the series and merch line, the Troop Beverly Hills screening where people got to design their own gay merit badges and confirms that yes, the Cinema for Sodomites logo does kind of look like a butthole. Next up is James Carroll the co-author/designer of The Showgirls Activity Book, which is a book of word searches, mazes and images for coloring inspired by the iconic film Showgirls. James recalls discovering the movie as a teen in South Africa, makes the case for why Nomi Malone is a feminist hero and reveals the plans he has for future books inspired by Clueless, Mean Girls and The Birdcage. Paul Ybarra AKA Paul Straightjacket is next and shares the origin story behind his creative brainchild, The Straightjacket Tarot, a deck of tarot cards featuring self-portraits of Paul wearing his favorite garment in the world; a straight jacket. Paul talks about the origins of his straightjacket fetish and explains why he decided to share it with the world in this unique way and he also recalls the time he got stuck in a straight jacket alone for eight hours and thought he might have to call 9-1-1 with his mouth. The episode's final guest is Andrew Harper, a visual artist and choreographer based in Georgia who, during the pandemic, launched Reissued, an online store that features original clothing designs, one-of-a-kind purses and a set of notecards featuring Andrew's original works of art. Andrew also talks about how he became “thrift store influencer” and sings the praises of the skimpy retro running shorts he rocks on Instagram. And all four guests talk about how creating their business and getting their stuff out in the world has enriched their lives in unexpected ways.  Andy Scahill's Cinema for Sodomites https://www.cinemaforsodomites.com/ James Carroll's The Showgirls Activity Book: https://www.amazon.com/Showgirls-Activity-Book-J-Carroll/dp/B08BDXM6FS Paul Ybarra's The Straightjacket Tarot: https://straitjackettarot.com/ Andrew Harper's Reissued Store: https://reissued.store/

We move along the surface of things...[but] there are times when we stop. We sit still. We lose ourselves in a pile of leaves or its memory. We listen and breezes from a whole other world begin to whisper.”  James Carroll, novelist.Question: What if you were to pause and summon up a good memory? Let's get this clear first: stop calling it red light therapy. We stand corrected. You may have heard of this hot new therapy that's been taking off across the globe, but in this episode, you'll discover that it's not a new therapy, and it's not “red light therapy”. It is, however, the medicine of the future - the very same medicine that you saw in Star Trek when someone went to the sick bay, was treated by a laser beam, and healed. In this episode, James Carroll, founder and CEO of Thor Photomedicine joined us to talk about photobiomodulation therapy, or PBMT. He's a world-renowned expert in PBMT - a walking, talking, breathing encyclopedia of information about the benefits of this powerful therapy that's backed by thousands of peer-reviewed scientific studies. James shares inspiring stories about how PBM has helped patients across the globe with everything from chronic pain to athletic recovery and even a specific disease that causes blindness. With more than 100 names for the therapy, it's hard to sort out the differences between devices and treatments, but James clarifies some of that as he describes what to look for and what benefits to expect if you're considering adding red light therapy, errrr, photobiomodulation therapy, to your center. Be sure to stop by the Thor Photomedicine booth at the Float Conference to try it out yourself!
