I feel like I have been studying Joe McNally's work since I first picked up a camera, so this should be the easiest show post I have ever done. He is an absolute master of light, and I own his "The Language of Light" Volume One, I need to get Volume Two. I have watched classes through KelbyOne and CreativeLive, and twice I have sat at the end of his PhotoshopWorld Keynotes wishing it wasn't over. Yeah, this should be easy. But no, this is a tough one. Joe McNally is a legend, and most anyone you ask would agree that he's one of the top photographers working today, perhaps ever. He is in that very elite group of photographers know as Nikon Ambassadors, along with the likes of Moose Peterson (who has been on the show twice - for Wildlife & Wild Places & Aviation Photography), Deborah Sandidge (who was on the show for the episode on Better Travel Photography), Todd Owyoung and others. Joe is also a Capture One Ambassador, a Gitzo Ambassador, and is affiliated with Printique (an Adorama company), Synology, Lastolite, Tether Tools, and Powerex. Writing about someone I respect as much as Joe creates a flood of thoughts, and putting them in the right order matters. Let me start here... Joe McNally won the first Alfred Eisenstaedt Award for Journalistic Impact for a LIFE coverage titled, “The Panorama of War”. He has been honored numerous times by Communication Arts, PDN, Graphis, American Photo, POY, and The World Press Photo Foundation. His career has led to international acclaim, more awards than I could list here, and assignments that have taken him to 70 countries. With all of that said, we have only just begun to scratch the surface of Joe's career. Joe has shot numerous cover stories, and highly complex features, for legendary publications such as LIFE, National Geographic, and Sports Illustrated, along with cover stories for TIME, Newsweek, Fortune, New York, Entertainment Weekly, The New York Times Sunday Magazine, and Men's Journal. He has also managed to do something few people can... bridge the worlds of photojournalism and advertising. His client list includes FedEx, Sony, Nikon, Land's End, General Electric, MetLife, Adidas, American Ballet Theater, Epson, the Wildlife Conservation Society, ESPN, MAC Cosmetics, USAA, the New York Stock Exchange, and Lehman Brothers, and that's a short version. American Photo listed Joe as one of the 100 Most Important People in Photography, and described by the magazine as “perhaps the most versatile photojournalist working today", and in 2010 he was voted as one of the 30 most influential photographers of the decade in an industry wide Photo District News survey. As an educator, McNally is unequaled. He is an author, teacher, and highly sought after speaker. His newest book, "The Real Deal: Field Notes from the Life of a Working Photographer" - available through Rocky Nook or Amazon - was released on February 8, 2022. I pre-ordered it, and can't wait to read through it. In fact the photo we discuss on this show triggers a whole chapter in the book. His other titles include "Sketching Light", "The Hot Shoe Diaries", The Moment It Clicks", and "The Face of Ground Zero". The latter is based on Joe's "Faces of Ground Zero, Portraits of the Heroes of September 11, 2001 Collection", which consists of 246 Giant Polaroids - life-size photos (9' x 4') shot during a three-week period shortly after September 11, 2001, with additional images shot in 2002. I mentioned above my experience watching Joe give a Keynote at PhotoshopWorld a few years ago. Joe McNally is hands down the best I have ever seen. I don't know how to even begin to describe his speaking and teaching ability. All I can do is suggest that, given the opportunity, you don't miss him on stage. Be sure to check out his classes too, like The Language of Light class mentioned above, or through places like KelbyOne and CreativeLive. I can only imagine how great his live workshops are, and,

Right now I am pumping the greens and Pre-workout and loving them both… Heres a secret “I'm on them right now as I do my podcast”. Baskin Robbins has 33 flavors and counting… but why do you feel like vanilla. The problem with most men and many women for other reasons is loneliness. Men feel lonely because they do not feel like they have an ability to connect. Women feel lonely because they connect, but typically on only a surface level… as one friend called it “Window dressing dinners”. You get together over coffee, dinner or a function and you all just pretend you are good friends. And covid has only made things worse… BUT HERE IS THE REAL ISSUE… The problem is we know what a good friend is like, we know what best friends are supposed to be like, we even know the simple basic principles of friendship… the problem is we have forgotten how to make friends. Remember as a kid you could make friends with a total stranger at the park? So what are the building blocks of making friends? 1 These. 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. Encourage: Paraklete, come along side, actually invite their presence into your life. Want a friend? Be a friend. Invite them into your life… from activities to personal stories to honest dialogue about yourself. But come along side others and invite them into your life… no facade, no pretentious behavior, no posturing… just invite them into your life for who you are. Some will walk with you, others will not, some will pretend to for a while… You will get burned a few times, but you will also make some great friends by invitation. Build one another up: Build the foundation. Start with the basics in friendship. you know we used to have an easy time building friendships as kids because it was built around the basics like discovery. I like this, you like this… wow we both like this - and the friendship starts. I love the line in the movie stepbrothers… “did we just become best friends?” - Yep. They are figuring out what they all have in common… and yea, I won't go there, but they discovered a bond in commonality. I was in the Carlsbad caverns a mile down under ground listening to a guide talk about the bats and more interesting facts. Well the guy next to me was in awe, I was in awe and he said something funny about it, I responded and before you knew it we were both enjoying each others company discovering the story behind the cave. We ended up talking, laughing and becoming friends. I went to a gun class on defensive shooting… met a few other guys there and in the middle of this class while learning/discovering new things I connected with quite a few other men… just like when we were kids. Keep doing it, don't get a clique… I run from friends who want a clique. If you have a group of friends and they can only be friends with those in the group… you don't have friends, you have a membership club that costs you your freedom and friendship with others. Never stop making friends… some of you are a 2 degree shift away from losing all your friends. What do I mean? You only have a couple friends and if one moves or and one dies… you are back to zero. Never stop making friends. The word here for Continue doing it in the greek is Poy-eh-o. It is an interesting word that means keep making stuff out of anything. Keep making any friends… Yes even non Christian friends. I have a hobby… I love making friends with the odd duck. Let me give you some examples on my friends list: Ethiopian woman who is very strange and smells Inner city heavy set woman with a temper Gang banger Tattoo artists Hitman thug drug dealer (BTW he is white and 45 yrs old) Teenagers who are spoiled rotten, snide and insecure Old men who are transgender or gay Multi millionaires Scientists Hipster podcasters who are into DMT and shrooms People who share different faith or religious views… i.e. Muslim, Bahai, Occult and yes… I hate to say it… even Calvanists - ok, its a joke, but honestly some of us have a harder time making friends with other Christians than with the hardened sinners out there. The point is…maybe you can't make friends because you are looking for the perfect friend… he aint out there, she does not exist. But if you practice what 1 These. 5:11 says you will have more friends than you know what to do with…. trust me on this… I'm your friend!

Learn from our guest Poy T. Granati and how she has made the most of her time while building her paper flower business. Building a small business means wearing many different hats. How do you find time to advertise, bookkeep, communicate, network, and create? With time management. This isn't just a catchphrase. We're all busy. We have to make the most of the time that we do have so that our businesses can thrive. But we know that it's easier said than done. In our latest episode of Paper Talk, we talked with Poy T. Granati of Summer Space Studio about how she has built up her paper flower business in a relatively short period of time. When starting out, she was working a full-time job while teaching workshops and creating flowers at night. How did she manage it all? By making the most of her time. Our conversation covered a wide array of topics, ranging from how she uses her advertising background to appeal to customers, to how she goes about partnering with shops to promote her work. You'll want to listen to everything she had to say, but here's some of the tips we discussed about managing time that will help you get more done for your paper flower business. Break Tasks Down Have you ever felt overwhelmed by something you had to do? Maybe it was a series of blog posts, or a tutorial that needed to be written. Maybe you just don't know how you'll ever figure out that new flower for a commission. Break it down! Poy's educational background in design has helped her learn how to break down processes and take things one step at a time, but you can do it, too! Work out what steps you need to take to complete your task, then do just the first part. Write that first blog post. Jot down just the supplies needed for that tutorial. Look up pictures of that new flower. Don't worry about what comes next. Complete the first step before you think about the next, and before you know it, you'll be halfway through. Block Off Time In order to get things done, you need to block off time. Dedicate time just for paper flowers, and make it a realistic period of time that you can repeat every day. Poy told us about a course in her graduate program that encouraged students to dedicate a small amount of time to work on one skill for one hundred days. The idea was that we can't always block out eight hours to work on something new, but by giving yourself a little bit of time each day, you are continually practicing and growing. By the end, you've got a habit. That class was actually the beginning of Poy's paper flower journey, which you can hear more about in the episode. The details about the class and how it changed Poy's life are very interesting, and you won't want to miss them. Give Yourself Deadlines Without a deadline, you can push off tasks and goals for ages. No judgement here—we all do it. But in order to grow as a business, you do need to buckle down and get your work done at some point. Nothing motivates more than a deadline. Currently, Poy is giving herself a six month deadline for focusing solely on her paper flower business. She has milestones to reach, goals to achieve, and an end date to keep in mind so that she doesn't lose sight of what she should be doing. Of course, simply setting a deadline doesn't matter if you don't stick to it. If you've done commission work, you've probably noticed that you will stick to other people's deadlines more than your own personally imposed deadlines. It's hard to self-motivate! In the episode you can hear more about ways that we keep ourselves on track and hold ourselves to the deadlines we set. Here's what you'll hear when you listen to our conversation: More ways you can make the most of your time. How Poy first started making paper flowers. Why you should let go of perfectionism to become a better artist. How to choose collaborators, like stores that will host workshops or feature your work. How to target your ideal customer. Listen to our latest episode of Paper Talk to learn all of this and more. Remember to join our Facebook group, and please consider supporting us on Patreon for even more great content like this!
